I took my ladyfriend here as I'd heard that they grill the burgers over charcoal. Service was fast and friendly, and the restaurant was clean. We got our food, she took a bite, then said, "Oh, this is excellent!" Sure enough, this is one of the best burgers I've had since moving to Texas, and I eat a lot of 'em. It may not be for everyone but a real burger aficionado will be transported back to their parents' backyard Weber grill or their local state fair when taking a bite. We will be back, this is an excellent example of a longtime chain that's been around forever...and for a damn good reason! From the point of walking in and being waited on my Leah on 12/30/2025, I felt very welcomed at Frontier. I had never been here and had questions of which Leah did not make me feel dumb but explained my questions. The staff who brought the food to the table was also quite cordial. And the place was well kept. The burger was tasty. And the onion rings are some of the best I have had in a long time. It is not fast, each burger is made to your specific likings, but well worth it. I remember Frontier Burgers back in the day 60-70s. I then joined the Navy and did not return home for nearly 20 years. Sure glad we found this location. Awful. I used to live very close to the Jim's on Hildebrand and San Pedro and would eat there frequently. The food was always delicious, particularly the Frontier Burger and onion rings. I visited this Frontier Burger when they first opened years ago and it was as good--if not better--than the aforementioned Jim's. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. The Frontier Burger and chicken tenders (rubbery) were inedibly bad. The crinkle-cut fries and the onion rings were ok, but the rings were overly greasy. There appears to be a reason why there were no cars in the parking lot. To top it off, the food was grossly overpriced for the vastly diminished quality. I will not return. read more

Jim's just don't hit anymore, but they succeed here. The last three times I ordered a signature burger from Jim's the bun was over toasted and lettuce was wilted. I gave up! The food is fresher and the smiles are bigger over here. Classic Jim's Chicken Strips. Big Burgers, Crispy Fries, Hot Tortilla Soup and Cold Thick Ranch are the gold standard at Frontier Burger. The food is amazing here. This truly is a burger joint from back in the day. They are simple...menu isn't over complicated...and they do it well. The Bacon Cheeseburger is a must. It's seasoned just right that bacon is the thick cut and it's cooked throughout and not burnt. The fried and onion rings are a classic from back in the day...with that being said don't expect them to blow your mind just bring you back to childhood before the 2000s and provide a solid side for your burger. The lemonade though was amazing. I don't know what they do but it beats PTerrys lemonade and to be honest is a better balance then Chick-fil-A. I ain't mad at this burger spot at all. You want a mea where you will be satisfied and fueled up for a decent amount of cash. Not being overcharged. Then come here. I would even say they taste better than SA local Chester's and are cheaper. Burger a bit smaller but you still fill up. The customer service was good as well. I used to go to Frontier Burger all the time, and it was my favorite burger spot in the city, but it seems that they've had a significant drop in quality. I went through their drive thru yesterday and the first thing I noticed was a complete lack of service; no smile, no enthusiasm, the girl at the window just looked like she was completely over her job. When I got my food she practically threw me the bag and immediately shut the window as fast as possible. I get that food service isn't for everyone, but I was the only person in line and I'm not expecting some sort of 5 star experience, just a smile would have been nice. Maybe she was just having a bad day, but it definitely impacted my perception of the restaurant. Then comes the food- oh how the mighty have fallen. I got a double frontier burger meal with onion rings and a Dr. Pepper. For starters, the soda was carbonated but it tasted like there was barely any syrup in the bag they dispensed it from, I couldn't drink it. The onion rings were undercooked and had no seasoning on them whatsoever, I had to actually put salt on them when I got home. The burger was dry, had a soggy bun, and fell apart as soon as I took a bite. The patties were clearly overcooked and felt like beef jerky when I bit them. The only good takeaway that I had was that they still charbroil them, which I could taste, and tells me they at least kept doing that. Overall, I was extremely disappointed with my visit. It really sucks to see your favorite burger spot nosedive into the ground, and I've come to the realization that I'm going to have to find a new place to go to. I can only cross my fingers and hope that I caught Frontier Burger on a bad day, that this is just a hiccup, but I can't see myself coming back in the near future. read more

This place brings back memories of my childhood. The burgers are not cooked on a steel grill like most places, but are "charcoal" grilled. This means with that wonderful charcoal smell and taste. And the onion rings, they are just like they have made them as I remember them from over 40 years ago. Very -very thin, and crispy, plus a big serving. but, they were a bit too greasy. I left SA for Dallas in 1982...having to leave behind Jim's and Frontier Burger (in Central Park mall, lower floor by Sears). How I missed the chili burger and cheeseburgers....and the onion strings that no one could top. When son took a medical job at Methodist SA this month I had to come here. You took me back 40 years to wonderful memories of growing up in SA during the 70's. I wanted a T Shirt to show Dallas how to cook great burgers but the store was out. Ate here for lunch and had a couple of issues - most of which were resolved by the restaurant quickly. Wife and I ordered chili cheeseburgers. They were brought to the table and when I took a bite, there was NO hamburger patty on the burger - chili, cheese, and onions. Turns out, my wife's burger was the same. Brought it to the attention of the manager and they resolved it quickly and gave us two chocolate chip cookies for the trouble. My only thought was that I would have been highly irritated if it had been a to-go order. They were completely out of both sweet and unsweet tea for the time that we were seated for lunch. You know you're there when you see the smoke coming out the top of that beautiful building where they're cooking your delicious charbroiled patties. so let's start with their customer service top-notch they are friendly and when they speak to you, they're speaking to you not at you really truly asking how your day is going. It's a really nice feeling when you come across great customer service, in the window of the drive-through you can see them breading the chicken tenders so they're breaded to order I had never had any. I always go through and get a chili cheeseburger because they are great or a bacon cheeseburger onion rings are so delicious. One of the best I have had in quite a while when you go and get a combo try the rings, you will thank me later!These rings are thin, crispy and are always piping hot and they are such a beautiful color. You can tell that they clean the oil every day on a daily they're crispy but not oily. They have great flavor and not over salted and they're delicious. Their burgers are very good. The chili I believe is made in house. SARAH the manager hats off to you hats off to you for running such an amazing crew and hiring people like BRANDI to work for you so nice so welcoming didn't make me feel pressured or rushed gave me a beautiful white bag filled with piping hot food for me to devour and when I rolled up to the window and told you that I wanted to know how much your chicken tenders were just so I could try them you Sarah manager gave me two on the house and I think that's a great way to make a long lasting customer. I've been to Frontier when they first came to San Antonio and loved the fresh charbroiled burger. It had been a while since I had been there and I will never return again! First the lady who took my order was nice, but once I got my order and drove off I started eating my burger and noticed the meat was cold! I returned and instead of going back through the drive through I went into the restaurant. It took five minutes for someone to wait on me. Then I assume it was a manager asked how can he help and I stated the meat in my burger was cold. He said he'd make me a fresh one and did. I was not aware until after I paid, that I was charged an additional $.79 for a slice of tomato, an additional $.79 for a small amount of shredded lettuce, an additional $.79 for a slice of onion, and the server asked if I wanted fries or onion rings and charged me an additional $1.99 to substitute onion rings. I'd say that Frontier has a solid burger. They do offer a variety of options like a mushroom Swiss burger. Chili, they have chili. Chili cheese fries anyone? Chili cheeseburger anyone? Crinkle cut fries are always good. And they offer the option of onion rings, or doing a half and half order of fries and rings. That's a pretty nifty option I'd say. Shakes, malts, cold soft drinks. I hate doing it myself but guess that's the only option now. thinly slice the onions, soak in milk put the flour and maybe panko in a bag and shake shake shake. after this fry away.
