Pork Pozole with Radishes, Cabbage, Onion, Lemon and Tortilla Chips

As someone who was a UCSB student for four years and working here as a staff member for three after that....you have to appreciate the little things like De La Guerra Dining Commons. One of my favorite places to grab a quick bite to eat on campus, you have to time it just right. If you hit DLG at 12pm be prepared to wait an eternity to get inside. You have to take note that class times are gonna be the deciding factor on whether you wait in line or zip on in. Try aiming for that 11:50am or 12:45pm instead for a sure way in! What I appreciate about DLG is it's options for folks to eat. One side is a taqueria with different types of Mexican food to enjoy, a soup and salad bar to craft your goodies, a stir fry bar with different types of bowls to try out, a pizza counter, a grill for sandwiches and burgers during the day and the main dish of the day at the blue plate location inside. As a student I definitely tool places like the dining commons for granted so I am happy I get to work here and try all the dishes! I often connect with the staff to see what they are thinking of trying next and they always take that feedback from students too so please let them know what you want to see! My favorite thing to eat is Pozole here as it reminds me of home when I am a little homesick and although it doesn't hit as much as my abuela's pozole...it is still fantastic and cooked with love. If you have a meal plan as a student you can eat here whenever it is open, but for those without one you have to pay via credit card at the entrance of the dining commons itself. It's around $12 for all you can eat and I highly recommend eating here if you are visiting campus to get a feel for what meals look like during the year. Thanks DLG and see you this week!

At that point. I ordered an eggplant sandwich and sat down. I waited close to 20 minutes for the sandwich, which I felt was too long, considering there was only one person ahead of me, and the place looked adequately staffed. The cook making the food was terribly slow. Maybe a newbie? Didn't seem to know how to handle knives, cut avocados, etc. Slow. I had time to look around the restaurant, which has several signs posted about acceptable behavior in the restaurant. "Don't ask for a to-go container. We will provide you with one if you haven't finished your food. We try to cut down on waste." Now, when I ordered, I was asked, "For here or to go?" Hum? Another sign by the pickle bar read, "Please do not use for pickles. Put your pickles in your red basket." OK. But what are we not supposed to use for pickles? That wasn't clear. I found such signage strange, particularly since the eatery is at the base of office buildings, where I assume, adults are employed. We aren't preschoolers. Why the strict code just to grab a sandwich? I am delighted to say, my eggplant was very good. But due to the wait, I will have lunch elsewhere.

The space had plenty of seating. We ordered the Korean Nashville chicken sandwich, Chicken Parmesan sandwich, Mac and cheese, Cole slaw, baked beans, and banana pudding (not pictured). The Korean Nashville chicken sandwich was super tasty and had a good amount of spice. The chicken was perfectly fried and loved that it had a little asian fusion to it. Was a little thrown off by only one slice of bread being toasted, but it didn't change the overall taste. The chicken parmesan sandwich was on the specials menu, and it did not disappoint! Loved the bread roll it was on, and it was nice that they gave an extra side of marinara to dip. Out of the sides the baked beans were my favorite! Super tasty with bits of bacon. Mac and cheese and cole slaw were both solid. The banana pudding was also amazing! Super fresh and was a generous portion. Will be back!

Very warm, welcoming and professional staff. It was busy and the cashier/waitress handled taking orders, delivering food to tables and kept the customers informed that she would be with them soon and all with a smile. The chicken tenders are tasty, tender and a nice size. Good sauces too. Biscuits are mini biscuits, tasty but expensive for what you get. I would prefer to just pay for a regular size biscuit instead of $10 for 6 mini one-bite biscuits. My main gripe were with the wings. They are a nice size, but not tender and cooked with too much batter. You have to cut into them to take the batter off or else you get a mouthful of batter. Also, the meat itself is not seasoned. If they could improve the wings it would be a much better product. So for now, we'll stick to the tenders.

I had seen its various locations (Isla Vista, Santa Barbara's Mesa and Goleta) and always wanted to check it out; yet leave it to my sister from out of town to introduce me to it. Twice she has ordered take-out sandwiches at lunch time for us. Their sandwich menu is nutso with 36 creations to choose from, including several that are vegetarian. Of course, the options are endless if you choose to build you own! I went with the #14 (a turkey BLT) and #2 (turkey and cheese) which are simply basic yet tasty. I have no idea what they do to their bread but is addicting. Slight crunch on the outside, yet soft to the squeeze and full of gummy flour flavor! All of the ingredients appear fresh and nothing special--which I appreciate when I want a deli sandwich. I love the fact that you can purchase your sandwich in a variety of sizes including a "mini" for if you need a snack to hold you over and not a full meal. I also think of children, those who are on a lower carb diet, who have had bariatric surgery, or are limiting portion sizes. I personally go for a "small" sandwich. However, if you want to go all out, choose the "medium" or "family" size. Even better, if you're hosting a party, order a three to ten foot long sandwich (requires a day's notice). I will be back to check out the actual place--third time's a charm they say. I've heard both their chicken salad and tuna salad are both delicious. That's next up! P/S: According to Yelpers, they do not accept the Check-In Offer for a free soda with a sandwich purchase. They should really remove this from their Yelp page... Note: Only the Milpas location offers chicken sandwiches, burgers, french fries and chicken nuggets. Note squared: They charge more for credit card payments. Note cubed: If you want free entertainment, check out their Milpas website menus with adorable, phonetically spelled items. (gient vs giant, meetball vs meatball, and phylly vs philly).
