The quality of this coffee is unreal. Honestly it's probably in my top five best cups of coffee I've had anywhere in the world. I was visiting Pittsburgh from out of town and the latte blew me away so much, I had to come back for a second one before I left. We also got breakfast here. I got the breakfast sandwich and it was a unique variety of flavors and really good. The menu had some really unique options. Overall, this was a top notch experience. What an amazing coffee shop in the Strip District! The atmosphere was incredible and the staff was super friendly. You can instantly tell that they loved working there through the enthusiasm in which they explained their vast selection of coffee. My friend and I shared a 20 oz Chemex of their Chami coffee. Chami is their light roast from Colombia that has a sweeter and fruitier flavor, and it was absolutely fantastic! I will definitely be coming back here when I'm in the strip district! read more

AH. MAZE. ING. We had Sunday brunch delivered; paninis, frittata and dirty chai lattes. The Gorgonzola and Prosciutto Panini, I wanted two more of. Everything about it was perfect. Crunchy, good salty balance. The bread they use for the paninis was so good. Because we have no self control, we also ordered two grilled cheeses, and a sweet potato frittata. My grilled cheese, I got with roasted peppers, and Matt got his with 'njduja, a pepper and pork spread, and Pittsburgh Pickles. The pickles were a little chunky for the sandwich, it could have used slices instead of big pieces. Still delish though! The sweet potato frittata will be saved for later. It looks yummy though. Their Dirty Chai Lattes were good, too. Getting coffee delivered is so hit or miss, but when it arrived it was perfect sipping temperature. I'm still enjoying it while writing this review. Order it! The barista was talking to a friend at the counter as if no customers could hear saying "I'd rather serve you than any of these f******" then proceeds to give friend a free coffee while we waited for another 10+ minutes to get a small hot latte even after asking them to check on the order. They proceeded to act unbusy "cleaning things" asking if their friend needed anything else besides their free coffee that they didn't have to wait for. However, De Fer is guilty of violating the most sacred ethical duty as a coffee shop, to caffeinated its community if and when needed. A coffee shop that opens at 8am is like a ski resort that doesn't open until March or a drive in theater thats closed down at 4pm. This was my first visit to De Fer Coffee and Tea in the Strip district. The place offers a wide variety of beverages including kombucha, espressos, lattes, teas, and specialty drinks. They have their own roastery on the premises and usually brew two types of coffee per day. They work with a group of importers who specialize in bringing sustainable coffees to the guests. In addition to coffee, tea and other beverages they sell paninis, waffles, quiches, toasts, meats, cheeses and frittatas. You can also purchase wine and cocktails here as well. On this particular visit I decided to go with the sweet potato frittata. For $5.00 it was very good. You can either order in or take out. Merchandise from local vendors are also available for sale along the back wall including their own coffee. You can if you wish order coffee bags online and will delivery if you live in a reasonable distance. I had the "light up night" seasonal coffee as my beverage and was impressed with its robust flavor yet not overly strong as to be overwhelming. The business with its traditional rooster painting is of French origin along with their name De Fer meaning "iron". They have all over very unique and interesting artwork from a man in W Va. I like the fact that they give back to the community by supporting local businesses and ending up purchasing a small print to take home. De Fer coffee and tea caters to the working and has free WiFi. Passcode available upon request. They have two gender neutral restrooms but as always noticed my "pet peeve"-no place to hang or put your purse down. I spoke to the man who helped me behind the counter who apologized for that fact that their hanging hook was broken and missing. He said he would look into it. The pastries come from La Gourmandine in Lawrenceville which I know is of exceptional quality. On Fridays they get pastries from Gluten free goat bakery also from Lawrenceville for anyone who has special dietary needs. Vegan options here are very limited but they do offer alternative dairy based products if you would like cream for your coffee. They are also participants in the coffee passport if you have one of those cards and makes a great stop along the way. The downstairs seating area is small but this place gets packed during the day. Am looking forward to trying one of their smoothies or hot chocolate on a future visit. Can I just say how nice they always are in here and how they're always ready to let me know what I can eat as a vegan....This place makes me feel all warm and giddy and hungry and happy with their selection of drinks and food. When I first came here it was for morning coffee and a breakfast sandwich which were both delicious. Recently I learned that they also do cocktails and other snacks in the evenings as well as live music. They have a house jazz band that plays at least once a month. This review is purely of the coffee as we didn't try any food...and the coffee shop atmosphere is tough to measure these days...though it was very nice. This coffee is nothing short of EXTRAORDINARY. For the next two days the flavor of my drink was, to use a term I heard on Chopped, "unfolding" in my mind. This was a very nice single origin, the Bella Vista, which indeed was like coffee fruit punch, but not in an over the top way. It was certainly one of the most balanced natural processed coffees I've ever had. I felt similarly about their blend they use for iced coffee, Eliza Furnace. It was an exceedingly interesting coffee, with a very curious cinnamon note. Despite being a little darker roast than I typically like, it was still delicious. This is my favorite coffee spot in all of pittsburgh. It's clearly a lot of other peoples favorite too because it's always busy when I go! But even if it's busy you don't wait a ridiculous amount of time for your drinks or food. They have my favorite cappuccino. Smooth, foamy and delicious. I'm unsure but believe their food menu changes with the season because in the spring I got a delicious Brie and I believe it was prosciutto Sammie and this time I got a yummy meat and red pepper Sammie. My 12 oz latte was ~ 7 dollars (swapped for oat milk but still...) and when I was done, I found some paper particles at the bottom of my drinks. The Breakfast English Muffin was tasty filled with Fresh Cracked Eggs Baked with Parmesan, Topped with Crispy Pancetta, Shelburne Farms Cheddar, Garlic Chili Oil on a Homemade Buttermilk Chive English Muffin. Everything was fresh and the garlic chili oil really made this sandwich special. The coffee - we ordered two iced vanilla lattes with oat milk.
