12/14/2024 This place screwed up my orders so much in the past I stopped going. A sign said it was under new ownership so I thought I'd give them another shot. I ordered the chicken fried steak with two scrambled eggs, hash browns, and toast. What I got was chicken fried steak, two over easy eggs, and no hash browns. Every good review has to be friends and family as I have never had anything right here. Even with the new ownership, they still screw it up. I should've just went with the new Northridge breakfast (same meal is a dollar cheaper) than give this dive another chance at not screwing up. read more

The waitress staff was nice attentive to our needs, but holy poop, that was the worst canned food I've ever had corn beef and hash was definitely Homel out of a can my friend had limpy pale gray French toast, undercooked and probably not even an egg batter but I think the eggs were real that I had over easy they need a new cook and better quality ingredients. I was just passing through on the way to Truckee and by the time I passed through grass Valley so was that morning breakfast passing through me I found a roadside turnout and had a major blowout and I didn't have to reupholster my car.. Horrible! My wife and I stopped in for breakfast. I had eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast. My wife had an omelet, hash browns and toast. My bacon was nothing special, the hash browns seemed to be store bought frozen and the waitress forgot our toast. My wife's breakfast was made with rancid oil, including the eggs. Everything tasted like old oil, kind of fishy. The odor came out of her body for days. Still, two weeks later, anything made with oil makes her cringe. When we asked for our toast, they slathered on some sort of "butter" (greasy slime) and toasted the bread for about 10 seconds. It was gross. For a Sunday morning hardly anyone was in there. My friends and I were unable to go to our original restaurant and ended up here. The service was ok. It seemed like they weren't used to business as the cafe across the street that's normally open was not. There was only one waitress for the whole place and so service was mediocre as she was swamped. She did her best, I will give her that and that's why I gave a 2. My main qualm was the food. Definitely not quality. I ordered the grilled chicken and bacon sandwich. It didn't come with anything on it so I ordered some tomatoes. The best part was the fries that came with it. The chicken was not real chicken. It was very obvious it came out of a can. It's like they just sliced a big piece of "chicken" off. No flavor and it's texture left much to be desired. My friend got breakfast and the pancakes were "not good." The food was very sub par. The ambiance was ok and it was kid/toddler friendly. I didn't give it a one as it wasn't the absolute worst I've had but I don't think I will be returning. read more

I'm giving this place 2 stars because it's really one of the only places to get breakfast in the area. So it's a matter of convenience. I don't recommend venturing off the simple breakfast dishes. My husband and I made that mistake the last time we visited. I ordered the Chicken Noodle Soup with Cornbread because I love cornbread mostly. The soup was pretty bland, but after adding a lot of salt it was tolerable. The cornbread sadly was dry, flavorless and reminiscent of pancake batter. I went to the grocery store after to get a can of soup and granola bar to satisfy my hunger. My husband ordered the BLT and Chef's Salad. He's been on a mission to eat healthier. Unfortunately he didn't realize that the Salad would come out with so much cheese and diced ham on top. It was maybe a quarter head of lettuce, A slice of red onion, A tiny piece of broccoli, A baby carrot, A mushroom crumbled and maybe a half of a small tomato diced. read more

This was an absolute mess. My BLT had bacon so tough I couldn't chew through it. So much mayo that it slopped all over the plate. My partner had the burger and it was a saucy mess. So much that it made the bun fall apart. I hear this is a new owner and I wonder why she got into the restaurant biz. read more

The reviews here aren't very deserving of this place! We went here the first week we moved and we loved the small town vibe! The food was great and we sat in and ate and they were quick and attentive to us! It was great to meet the locals and meet some people in our new town! Their prices are great as well! Yes! This is a nice small place. I love it, it is small so at busy hours there can be a wait. The food is home style cooking; great people; Delicious Food. I've been a few times now; the atmosphere is family like; so don't expect your typical chain restaurant; expect family friendly service even in its busiest times; expect that it maybe slower than others but they make up for it in all categories. Sorry, I always forget to take pictures but I had the tench toast and the chicken fried steak is awesome, huge. Everything is priced competitively, enjoy the coffee! I hadn't been in the Daybreak in 17+ yrs because of the terrible service we recieved, but since their window said "under new ownership" I decided to give the little place a try. At first sight I thought I had made a very bad choice because the ceiling is in terrible disrepair and the paint is dirty and don't get me started on the floors! Despite the red flags we ended up staying and ordering. Our waitress was very friendly and kind, the other people working their were eager to help. We ordered breakfast. The food was EXCELLENT! Much to my surprise my hashbrowns were perfectly cooked, my eggs were done the way they should be and the food was delivered hot and fast! Will I go back? Yes! I'm very torn about this place now. For the last thirty years, it used to be one of my and my wife's favorite places to come for breakfast. But now it has a new owner, and maybe they are still trying to get it figured out. I always judge a breakfast place by how it's biscuits and gravy are. And as it turned out, they were actually pretty good. They needed a little more pepper and the gravy was just a touch thick, but all in all pretty good. But the pancakes!! My god were absolutely HORRIBLE! They were burnt and crunchy on one side and raw on the other. The lard like margarine that they use and offered for the pancakes and toast would be barely suitable to use as frying oil. The waitress was scattered all over the place with no organization and treated us like crap and gave us nothing but attitude. The Bacon could be in the Guinness book of world records as the thinnest undercooked bacon ever successfully cooked and stayed in one piece. All of our eggs we're ordered as over medium and came with broken yolks. The really fun part was the next day all three of us had diarrhea, and one was throwing up, from what was either bad bacon or bad eggs. I am so sad over this. Because this means that if they don't figure it out and get their food fixed and improved, they will not be in business much longer. read more

Did not look anything like the pictures on yelp. Looked old and run down. We were served water in styrofoam cups that had black specs in them. The server was nice but she said it was coffee grounds? My daughter asked for chocolate milk and they said they didn't get their shipment until Thursday. The food was mediocre. Not worth the price. $15.99 for a breakfast burrito is insane. It had maybe 1 piece of bacon in it and a lot of potatoes. I would probably suggest you go somewhere else. read more

Discovered this spot while searching for restaurants in the Penn Valley area. I was on a mission to find Eggs Benedict for the wifey. We ended up eating there everyday...four days in a row. I was looking for an old fashioned local spot with good grub. This place did not disappoint. Martha (the waitress) is a hoot...congenial and attentive. The cook (Chris) was spot on each day on making the Eggs Benedict perfect. There is definitely a "home like" feel to this spot. Don't miss it! read more

I'll start out by saying, I'm not from the area and this was my first time here but my boyfriend is from the area and took me because he knows I love little-old breakfast spots..buuut I'm not a morning person. Soo we went about 1pm, working in the service industry I know those late arrivals can sometimes be tricky and take up a ton of time that we'd usually like to have cleaning up and prepping for the next day (Note to people who obviously never worked in the service industry and had to do closing shifts) It was packed! It had every essence of what I grew up going to - small, loud, people laughing and those adorable old couples drinking a coffee on their weekly dates. I won't lie, i kinda even miss the cigarette smoke i used to smell in the old diners.. So nostalgic! Luckily a small table just opened up in the corner, and we got seated within a minute of walking in. It did take a few minutes to get our drinks, I didn't know what I wanted so asked for them to come back, yes it did take a while for them to come back. Was I upset at the wait? No. Before our server left she apologized for the wait, and I completely understood, it was packed and the times are different, small staffed/family run places are the ones most susceptible to rude and unkind people, these people are trying to keep their business afloat, especially during a pandemic! When our server came back - yes a short wait, but I did make eye contact once it took a few minutes and she nodded and came right over (after taking the other tables order) and apologized again. I ordered my two favorite breakfast items, eggs Benedict and hash browns. Boyfriend got the big breakfast with pancakes or something, I was more concerned with looking at all the old stuff on the walls. It did not take long for our food to get to us but I wasn't really timing it in anyway cause i was just people watching and enjoying the environment, and let me say, I'm a snob on my eggs Benny and hash browns, if I don't like it, I won't eat it and just order something else. Reading other comments about the food being too greasy..well This was not in my case at all! I literally ate all my hash browns in like a minute (okay exaggerating a tad bit) after tossing some extra salt on them..they were cooked perfectly, crispy golden brown on one side and throughly cooked and not soggy on the other! Now, the eggs Benedict was great as well, I loved the Hollandaise soooo much, I wish there was more! Egg perfectly poached, English muffin toasted perfect, ham cooked perfectly, now the only thing I would say is they need to put more sauce on them, but now I know to ask for extra. I was very satisfied with my meal. The bill came after some time, yes it was more expensive than I grew up with paying...but HELLLO people, there's a reason costs are rising for everything and if you wanna complain about paying a little extra, then go to Dennys, which i do like usually, but truly if it's my only option..and I went up to pay, reading more stuff on the walls, I realized our server was actually the owner Sherri! She was so nice when I realized and I thanked her for being open during these times and the food was amazing. Don't ask me about the boyfriends food, he ate it all with no complaints. Left a good tip and left full, albeit no leftovers with is not typical for me, so maybe portions might be on smaller side or I was super hungry. Over all - great job y'all! I got enough dirty looks from the cook, that before I even ordered, I felt way too uncomfortable to let him cook my food!!! I let the waitress know, and I left! This is not my first encounter with this cook being rude within the last half an hour of closing. When the owners are there it's a great place. If the guy cooking doesn't have grey hair.
