He came the day after I contacted him, measured, cut and installed a piece of wood which he secured to joists in the ceiling with a brand new light box. He explained what was happening and possible resolutions I could try, but ultimately the drywall was breaking and I didn't want to risk further damage. The work itself took over an hour to complete and it cost less than $200. I won't ever have to worry about the stability of my light box should I choose to change it in the future.
