I had a recent service visit for a ceiling fan that stopped working. The technician inspected my circuit breaker panel and removed the plate on the wall switch. After that inspection he refused to continue diagnosing the problem unless I paid either for an annual membership (over $300) or a one‑time diagnostic fee (over $200). I declined, the technician called his manager, and the manager instructed him not to proceed. No fees were charged. The technician apologized that this policy was not disclosed when I scheduled the appointment. This was unprofessional and felt like a bait‑and‑switch. A diagnostic visit should not turn into a hard sell on the doorstep without clear disclosure up front. I will not use Chesapeake Electric again and I would not recommend them. We hired Chesapeake Electric to come to our home and do an overall 'safety inspection/evaluation' and update and/or fix any repairs that needed to be done. They ended up cleaning up the electric and putting in new junction boxes and a new panel for which we paid about $15k for. Today, when my husband went into the crawl space for an unrelated issue, he found a LIVE, uncapped wire directly next to a water pipe. This is a HUGE fire hazard. The electricians did do work in the crawl space so it is not as though they have the excuse that they did not go in (as they should have). I have reached out to Chesapeake Electric about the situation and they have yet to call back nor fix the issue. We have young children - this could have been devastating. read more

BLUF: Easy to schedule, friendly and communicative electrician and work performed as expected. I loathe hiring anyone to do anything because people are so unreliable. But frankly, I am a former DIYer who has gotten really lazy so when it came time to install a junction box and ceiling fan in a guest bedroom I called Chesapeake Electric. Phew, much to my relief, Chesapeake Electric was great to work with - scheduling the job was easy, the electrician showed up on time, he was very communicative, the work performed was great and it was easy to pay. Also, the electrician did a great job cleaning up and hauling away the trash from the ceiling fan. It feels good to finally have a ceiling fan in our guest bedroom and to have a reliable electrician in our contacts. read more

Scheduled a service visit with Chesapeake Electric for issues with an under cabinet light and outside pole light, but got a whole lot more than that with the estimate(s). After an inspection of the lights and the breaker box in the basement, the electrician went to his vehicle to draw up a work plan. As noted in other reviews, we ended up with a series of five estimates that ranged from about $500 to $6,100 for the light fixes, various other "problems" that he found, and also included a series of increasingly costly service plans the company offers, up to the premium plan. To his credit, the electrician took a good amount of time with his inspection and was thorough in his explanations, but it was pretty overwhelming. Not his fault. It seems obvious that the upsell is a company strategy that their electricians are tasked with performing face to face with the customer. Blame the company for that. We contacted a different company and resolved things to our satisfaction for about $400. read more

Do not call these people. I called Chesapeake because they had good online reviews on their website, but my experience was the completely negative. I needed an electrician beca there was a short in the garage. Half the garage's outlets worked and half didn't. The first thing the Chesapeake technician tried to do was to scare me about my "non-compliant" breaker box and telling me it needed to be changed! I told him even though it may not be according to "today's" code, it passed code when the house was built and the breaker box was not the cause of the outlets not working! He then said he needed to count the number of outlets in the house in order to give me a quote for repair! He counted the outlets, sat in his car for 30 minute, came back in the house and said he couldn't give me a quote unless he ran a diagnostic for $350! He had no idea what to do or what was wrong. I paid him his $50 and sent him on his way. Then I called a real electrician who fixed the problem in 10 minutes. Didn't snoop through my house, and didn't try to upsell me on nonsense. read more

I contacted Chesapeake for a simple estimate on light electrical work in my newly purchased home. What I expected was a quick walkthrough and a written estimate. What I experienced instead felt more like a high-pressure sales presentation. Luckily I was able to identify the high pressure sales coming within minutes of tech coming in door ("Is your wife home, can we talk with her also?"). While their electrical work might be good, their sales is hack. The technician arrived, inspected the items, and then presented six "package" options on a tablet -- all bundled and far beyond the scope of what I had requested. He repeatedly pushed me to select from a mind-boggling array of packaged "today" and even asked several times if I could set up a video call with my wife so we could "go over the results together." When I declined to make an immediate decision, he called a manager anyway to try to close the deal. These are all scripted techniques right out of Grant Cardone or Dan Lok. I never received a written, itemized estimate, despite multiple requests. The company later refunded a small visit fee, but the overall approach left me concerned about how sales scripts and quotas are replacing genuine tradesmanship in home services. Consumers should know to ask upfront whether they're getting a licensed electrician or a sales presentation in disguise. I did not select them, a local licensed contractor got me a written estimate within a day and as an informed consumer that is where I will go. read more

DO NOT USE THEM. They visited my rental because there was a loose wire that was sparking . As soon as I got on the phone I realized the guy was upselling.. he had a whole script with asking me how much I would think the service costs!! What!! Is this a game!? Just tell me what's going on.. then he realized my tenant and I are friends and he proceeded to write the most expensive package he was offering (12k) as the tenants care package. What a scam. He wrote up "all the things that are wrong" with my unit, fear monger with "your unit might ignite at any moment". So he was holding me hostage in front of my tenant and posing the situation in a way that made it seem like I didn't care about my tenant unless I got the 12k package. Very manipulative. His quote had no detail, just the package price,, what am I even paying for!? So I got him to break down one of the options and looked online and saw it was 3 times cheaper. Once posing that to him and asking him to explain why he was overcharging me, he got angry. Btw, he only changed 6 outlets but was charging me for 12 without offering an explanation why. Just kept getting angry .. then my tenant just paid him and so I was on the hook for the 2k. Two thousand dollars for a service GOOGLE was telling me that the max. Would cost $800. Now they keep calling and texting to get back in there and do who knows what "for free". I'm not falling for that.. read more

i needed two lights installed in a small bathroom. One was partially installed already. They spent an hour in my home trying to sell me upgrades I didnt want all the way up to 10,000 dollars. Two instal the two lights they said it would cost me 852 dollars ridiculous. We settled on one light because I had to pay them for the visit and it was over 300 dollars and took the guy 5-10 minutes. We had a dishwasher that the electricity stopped working. We called Chesapeake and the electrician came out and it honestly came across as a total scam. He s tarted going on about how we needed to replace all the electrical in the house and then pulled out a glossy brochure about which plan for total redo of the house we could pick. It was literally something like the "peace of mind plan" and 2 others. The house is not old and it was a ridiculous proposal which we politely declined. He then charged a few hundred dollars for the honor of the sales pitch and never fixed the dishwasher. We called another electrician who fixed a component in the dishwasher panel and all works perfectly. He also looked at the rest of the electrical and said it looked great. The person from Chesapeake was like some used car salesperson trying to convince us our house was a risk because of what turned out to be a component in a dishwasher he either was too inexperienced to know how to fix or this is just how they operate to gin up business. Scheduled an estimate to run an electrical line on the exterior of my house about 40 feet high. Paid about $80 and got an estimate for about $4,000. They definitely have all the bells and whistles of a larger company but it comes at a steep markup. Needless to say, I went with a much smaller electrical company that charged me about $2800 for the exact same job and it was completed perfectly. Unless you've got money to burn, I recommend getting several quotes before signing. There are lots of great electricians out there who don't drive fancy branded vans but know their stuff read more

On Saturday the 11th, I discovered an issue in my basement where five outlets had ceased working. I tried the normal troubleshooting and realized it was likely an issue with a breaker, but I did not want to get into that. I can change a switch, or an outlet, but getting into the main panel. Nope, that I leave to the professionals. So, I contacted Chesapeake through email, and they responded with a text, and then I spoke with Ryan, the owner. He was on his way home from a Mother's Day celebration with his family. Ryan listened to my problem, explained what some of the issues might be, and then set me up for an appointment the following day in the afternoon. I got a call the morning of the appointment and was offered an earlier appointment because they had a cancellation. In about 20 minutes, Kevin, my electrician, arrived. He went through all the possibilities, tested everything, then started taking apart the outlets that weren't working. He discovered that when they wired my basement, it was not how it should be done. Kevin explained all the issues, changed out 5 outlets and one switch, and upgraded the breaker. Yes, the price seemed a little high, but it was better than me getting electrocuted, which was a distinct possibility had I tried to repair the issue myself. Kevin was awesome, he had no problem with me standing over him, watching and asking questions. Kevin explained EVERYTHING he was doing. He was professional and extremely pleasant. I believe in local, small businesses, Chesapeake is that. They had amazing customer service, and I would have no problem calling them again for service. Stay away from these guys. I needed an outlet moved for my pool pump. Dispatcher told me $89 dollar dispatch charge and said they would provide the repair cost prior to any work. So far so good. Tech arrived, very courteous and professional and tells me there will be a $279 troubleshooting charge. That's fine. Next they leave for a lunch break and when they return they say they have to leave for an emergency call and someone else will pick up where they left off. I'm still good with that. New guy comes, jumps right into the work without giving me an estimate. He's courteous and professional. Job completed as needed. However the bill is way out of line. 1. Was charged the $89 dispatch fee twice. 2. Troubleshooting fee was $330 , not $279 as quoted 3. I was charged $864 to move an outlet 2 feet. Seems very high 4. They connected a pool heater I told them to ignore 5. Was sent a survey link that doesn't work. Granted they moved the outlet I feel like I could have done better somewhere else for a much more reasonable price. UPDATE Ryan from Chesapeake Electric called me to discuss my service call, and courteously adjusted the charges to my satisfaction. Highly recommend Chesapeake Electric !! We had an issue with the electrical panel. It has been a nightmare. The pros: -Service provided the same day -Electrician was professional The cons: -The cost. I showed the Chesapeake Electric invoice to 3 different master electricians who shared that the total cost should have been between $3500-$4000. We were charged $8500! Double what others in the industry thought we should have been charged. -Poor customer service. I called 4 times and left a message with customer service that I had concerns with price gouging and never received a response. I only received a response when I repeatedly asked to escalate my concerns. -Duplicate charges. When I brought my concerns to the COO, she shared that upon further review of my charges, I was double charged for the electrical permit application & coordination but that everything else was fair in their opinion. I have not received a credit yet for the duplicate charge. -Incomplete work. I have a cut cable with a contractor bag sticking out from the side of my house. I usually write positive reviews and refrain from writing negative posts but I know I would want to know this information if I was considering Chesapeake Electric. I would look elsewhere, there are too many other options out there! read more

Later I received a text that I would need to reschedule. I said no thank you, I will find someone else. He not only replaced the problem switch and pointed out how the previous switch may have been installed better which he corrected. He also took the time to check the wiring on the porch light and yard light - finding them In good order but making suggestions going forward. MAJOR UPSELLING. Their estimate was more than 6x what I ended up paying a master electrician from another company. I needed 3 minor electrical repairs completed prior to selling a home. Chesapeake's electrician wanted to do an entire home assessment. My realtor (present) told him the buyer only required the 3 items HIS inspector found. The electrician immediately stated the home needed 6-7 carbon monoxide detectors (no gas to home at all) and the electrical meter in the basement (that no one need has needed access to for years) be moved to the outside. $$$$ Without getting on a ladder and taking off the cover he stated my smoke detectors didn't have batteries and needed replaced. They have battery back up, are hardwired, and were just installed 2 years ago. Again, we questioned why he wasn't just keeping to the requested 3 items. One item on our list was a light socket up high we needed checked to see if bulb was just burned out or not. He stated he needed to run a diagnostic ($210) to diagnose it first. The final estimate included 3 separate diagnostics totaling $630. and a total estimate for the 3 minor repairs in excess of $3000. The master electrician I had from another company repaired everything on our list for less than 1/6 of Chesapeake Electric's quote. I also only needed 3 GFCI receptacles not 7 as they quoted. Additional outlets just need to be connected to a GFCI, but every outlet is not required to be GFCI. The owner did reach out to me on Yelp and several other employees have left messages everyday since my initial review. I did not reply because I felt if their electrician couldn't troubleshoot minor issues on his own without a diagnostic tool telling him the answer he lacked experience and I needed to move on. read more

Tony and Cristian did an awesome job at my house. I just bought a 30 year old townhome, and it was missing recess lights in the bedrooms / had a litany of miscellaneous electrical issues. They installed 3 ceiling fans at my place without causing any drywall damage, and fixed every problem on my home inspection list. I can't recommend these guys more. If I could rate Mario's professionalism and performance, I would give him 5 stars and highly recommend him. Now to the fun part. My appointment was for 9am. At 910, no one had showed up to my house. So I decided to call Chesapeake Electric just to confirm I had the correct date. They confirmed and told me the electrician was going to be running late, and should be there between 11am to noon. Oh really! I understand that things happen and people run behind, but a courtesy call from the company would have been nice. Instead I had to reach out to them in order to get an update. This is unacceptable, especially from such a reputable company. My time is valuable, as I'm sure is yours. So going forward, I would highly suggest better communication with your consumer base as to any delays for appointments. read more

Power went out in one of our rooms. Reached out to several companies over the weekend and they were the first to respond Monday morning. Lucky they had availability to come out the same day. Electrician came and didn't leave until he found the root of the problem - an outlet that was wired / installed incorrectly (photos of old outlet attached). Promptly replaced and we're back in business. Lifesaver! Also very professional with shoe covers the whole time and vacuum in hand to clean up afterwards. Highly highly recommend! Chesapeake Electric sent a worker, Logan W, to my home in Columbia MD to check old smoke alarm detectors . This was on or about Sept. 27, 2023. They set me up for service on the same day. The worker, Logan W arrived promptly, was very courteous, patient with me (an old lady) , and communicated very well, responding to all my questions and volunteering information. He replaced my two existing smoke detectors and advised me of code requirements for additional devices. So far I have no complaints. Logan told me I would receive email summarizing the work done, prices recommendations and estimates for additional work. I have not yet received the email but I don't know whether he was at fault or not for that. Price for work was $540.00, expensive, but I lack information to compare with other companies.
