He didn't offer a follow-up appointment. I had the best week ever because the inflammatory condition was paused completely. BUT. NO. TAPER. !!! I thought I was going to die from the prednisone withdrawal effects. Felt like the worst flu ever. Every muscle, every inch of my body hurt. When I tried to get in touch, no call back. From the very first appointment he had me...his warmth was genuine and his determination was strong. I'm only 25 and look relatively healthy which means that most doctors I have been referred to treated me like a pain pill addict. Dr. Chang is the first pain management doctor who took the time to see beyond my looks and into how my life has dramatically changed while dealing with excruciating, chronic pain. Dr. Chang gave me something that I had lost a long time ago and that was hope. He showed me my scans and not only explained what we were looking at but then pointed and pressed on the corresponding areas of my body to teach me why I'm having the pain in these areas. Dr. Chang understands the effects that long term, chronic pain can have not only on a persons body but their mental state as well. He attacks the issue of chronic pain from all sides instead of just writing more prescriptions for the physical symptoms. I don't normally write these reviews but after seeing over 25 doctors in the last 3 years for this issue and not gaining much ground against the problem I have to applaud Dr. Chang. He takes the time to let you know all the different ways chronic pain can effect your life and explain in understandable detail the different coping mechanisms that we can use to fight this. He helped me get through recovering from Prostrate cancer and the after effects (which by the way we're intense over a 5-6 year period) like my skin sensitivity being so acute after radiation treatments that my own (very salty) sweat caused my skin to sting from head to toe. I went so far as to use Dawn dish soap to shower with and it worked, amazingly...! My feet hurting, i bought shoes that were so wide, the Navy almost recruited me back in..! We were in town for World Superbike races at Leguna Seca (July 8). We were staying just a block…read moredown the street from this Urgent Care. Soon after our arrival in town my boyfriend was having excruciating jaw pain. It must've been bad for him to want to see a doctor so I Yelped an urgent care. This place was open, close by and most important had good reviews. It was closing in 30 minutes tho, but if we didn't go, bf would be miserable all weekend to see these races. We walked in, place was empty lucky for us, no appointment. Couple of waivers filled out, insurance given and Doctor took us in. Dr. Gilliam is by far the kind of doctor I wish I had as my PCP. He's funny, caring, gentle and educational. After asking my bf some questions and a little exam, it was concluded he had a little infection that needed antibiotics. Dr. Gilliam took care of ALL of it, sent the scripts to Safeway right next door (we needed to get snacks anyway) filled out the claim and sent it to insurance. I mentioned I was a medical coder. He does all of his own coding using software. But if Dr. Gilliam ever wants to hire a certified outpatient coder/biller with Urgent Care experience, we could always use an excuse to relocate to Monterey (hint hint) We were treated like humans, even laughed a little bit at some funny stories. Warm, kind Doctor. I hope we'd never have to be patients again but if we're in Monterey and need an Urgent Care, we're going here. He's the way all Doctors should be.
