Former patient. Dr. Ohlsen does not have a good nor a warm bedside manner. I found her to be very standoffish and pretty rude when I asked questions. I made the mistake of asking her once if I should increase my potassium intake to help lower my blood pressure. She was very snippy when replying to me. She noted later that my C Reactive Protein was elevated, but didn't do any further testing. I've now been diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis after my new internist at Stanford did a battery of tests (after noting my elevated CRP.) I'm sure Dr. Ohlsen knows her stuff, but I was a patient for years, and I found her manner very off-putting. read more

I have been to see Dr. Ohlsen a number of times and she has always been pleasant. I would say that she has a decent bedside manner. However, recently I have run into some issues with the way in which, I as a patient, have been handled. I am big on customer service and I have felt a huge lack of patient service. I recently needed to have a prescriptions refilled and the pharmacy faxed it over to the Doctors office four times in three days. Never once did I receive a phone call or a follow up to say that it was not to be refilled. Rather I had to continue to call. It was the day that my prescriptions ran out that I finally received the answer that I needed to have more tests before I would be able to get my prescriptions. Now please keep in mind, this is a prescriptions for a thyroid not pain meds. So basically not an abusive drug. When I explained that I had just had the test done two months prior and that it is usually once a year, they told me that I needed to do it anyway. When I questioned I was told that is just what they need to do. Now also keep in mind, whenever I have these tests they come out to be about $400. I then asked to speak with the Doctor because I felt like I was not being heard as the patient and was told multiple times that they would talk with her and call me back. I did not and had to call again. This time I went round and round with another woman and asked to speak with the Doctor and was told she had left for the day! Long story short...I as the patient am doing the work that they, as the Doctor should be doing...so why am I paying? I have requested my records and will be seeking a Doctors care that actually CARES! read more

This is a disgusting Practice. We took my Mother to her scheduled appointment which was difficult to get. Anyways my Mother is paralyzed and needs help getting around her Nurse took her in and Liz then told my Mother that She had canceled the appointment. Mixed feelings here. Dr. Ohlsen is friendly enough and seems to know her stuff. Generally I'd say that I'd recommend her. I've had multiple positive visits. However, I've found her to be a little old school when it comes to things like birth control, and has been a tad bit condescending at times. Additionally, on one visit I found myself being treated as a guinea pig and was given a shot by from the sounds of the conversation, someone who'd never really given shots before! And nobody asked me if this was okay! Another time I got a bill from them threatening to send me to collections for not paying - the funny thing was they'd never sent me a bill before that! Believe me, I'm really OCD about such things! And because I'm OCD about such things I wanted to get it taken care of RIGHT away, but guess what, the billing lady suddenly was out of town for two weeks after I got the letter. Grrr. And finally, the receptionist is not friendly at all. I'm on edge every time I interact with her because it seems one wrong word or question will be returned with a frown and a lecture. Sigh. The only good thing about this is that they're usually not running late at all because she sends away anybody who shows up a minute past their appointment time telling them they need to reschedule! read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Ohlsen's for many years. I am sad to say that my husband and I are moving to Arizona, and am so sorry to have to leave her care. Dr. Ohlsen was instrumental in discovering that I have an auto-immune disease. I did not have the traditional symptoms of the condition, so this was no easy task. I think she spent part of her weekend to research everything. I know that we all see things through a different perspective. I have recommended Dr. Ohlsen to friends and have never had one of them tell me that they had other than a positive experience. In Lizs' defense: that phone seldom stops ringing, and Liz has to toss many balls into the air and KEEP them in the air. I think she does a great job. read more

Dr. Ohlsen has been my doctor for over 12 years and is amazing. I have always been able to make an appointment in a timely manner & the staff have always been helpful. There is never more then a few minutes wait to see the doctor when I arrive for my appointment. That being said since she is so punctual you really shouldn't be late. Dr. Ohlsen herself is very efficient, direct and personal. As an example, I was asked to have something rechecked the following year. I had forgotten about it. Without me even asking her or going in she had already ordered the recheck & had the imaging office call me to schedule. I have had multiple situations like this where she is on top of things. Very organized office. I have recommended this office to many people who have told me how happy they are with her. I am thankful to have been able to have her for a doctor for myself and my family & feel we are all in good hands. read more

I was referred to Dr. Ohlsen by a very satisfied patient, and I am sure Dr. Ohlsen is an excellent doctor. What I didn't find excellent, however, was the way in which her insurance biller dealt with me. When I called in last year they told me they weren't taking new patients, and to call back in the New Year. I called a few weeks ago and was told by their receptionist that Dr. Ohlsen was taking one new patient a month, but not Medicare patients as she didn't want to fill out all the paperwork. So, I sent her a nice card of introduction and asked if she could possibly consider taking me on as a patient, as I don't own a car and have been hiring someone to drive me all the way to Santa Cruz. \ When I called to follow-up, I was next transferred to Dr. Ohlsen's medical biller, Marnie. Marnie proceeded to explain to me that she was the one who chose new patients and that they couldn't take any new Medicare patients as the "pairs" of insurance didn't match up. When I asked her to explain what she meant?, Marnie further detailed that there were more pairs of Medicare patients than other insurance-covered patients, and that they needed to "balance out" before taking any new Medicare patients. She also added that most of the doctor's patients were also reaching 65, and would then be added to that pool. In frustration I asked, "so, you mean you'll never, ever take on any more Medicare patients?".. and Marnie replied, "right." "Never, ever, ever??".. I asked again? "Yep," she answered. "Wow!" During these several years under Dr. Ohlsen's care, I feel that I have someone who really cares about my health and well-being. She listens attentively and follows through always, referring me for tests, labs, and to specialists where indicated. When I e-mail her, she always replies. I've been seeing Dr. Ohlsen for almost a decade and I have always had good experiences. She has great bedside manner and always listens and takes time with me. I feel extremely comfortable with her and feel like she is truly invested in my health. I have recommended her to tons of friends. She is especially knowledgeable for patients who are runners/triathletes and who are vegan. My husband and I have been patients of Dr. Ohlsens for years. Her receptionist Liz is an absolute nightmare to deal with. She NEVER calls you back and I ALWAYS have to keep calling to get answers. She is the typical gatekeeper. We have NEVER been able to get an appt. when either of us is sick...and the final straw for me was being turned away for being 5 min. late for my flu shot appt. that took me 2 weeks to get in for! UNBELIEVABLE! Thought I was being punked! Walked next door to my gyno and they gave me a shot immediately and agreed that I was treated poorly. Her office tried to reconcile with a call but since then we have had 2 more terrible experiences with interactions with that office. We are officially done with her and that office. read more

For an office that penalizes a patient so harshly for being a minute late, you might think they would own their own mistakes and make it right when they make an error. Not so. When I arrived (15 minutes early) I was told they weren't aware I was a new patient and would not see me. I let them know I worked in San Jose and had taken a day off to take care of all my appointments. No compromise. No, well, it will have to be a short appointment, or can you come back in an hour. I agree with the previous writer. Unfortunately the only other review so far. Dr. Ohlsen is hard to get in to see, even if you are sick. You may have to wait a day or two. Also, she almost always refers me to somebody else when I come to her with a problem. Which is fine, but why did I come in if she won't be able to help? The receptionist forces me to explain why I am coming in to see the doctor, so you would think the doctor could stem this whole process and send me somewhere at that point. Dr. Ohlsen is very disciplined (usually) about getting patients in and out quickly. I have waited for a really long time, but usually in-and-out. It's because if you are a minute late you will be sent away, and because they don't take any you-know-what from anybody. This discipline doesn't extend into getting things done for the patient, however. If you need something done today (so that you can see one of the doctors she sends you to), forget it. And yes, I get the same lecturing and weird attitude from the receptionist. It seems these days that doctors have figured out how to keep patients from bothering them with their silly little diseases. They have the receptionist do it! When I first went to Dr. Ohlsen as a new patient about 6-7 years ago (after waiting FIVE years to get in) for a yearly pap and typical girl stuff, I thought she was so helpful. She identified my problems and sent me on my way.She referred me to a wonderful counselor and even a maid to help with the overwhelming exhaustion and anxiety I was feeling at the time. I was so grateful. Over the past few years I even referred several friends to her practice. Then a car accident changed my life forever. I didn't know what was wrong but I started having debilitating migraines and couldn't walk straight and was dizzy and would sometimes fall down. In that time, I was pretty sick and daily life as an elementary school teacher became impossible to navigate. I had no choice but to explore disability. In that process, I needed a doctor to sign a document stating that the symptoms I was experiencing were real. After submitting over 200 pages of documentation from doctors at Stanford that clearly showed something was wrong, Dr. Ohlsen refused to get involved. I was on a deadline to submit the disability paperwork and needed a doctor to sign off that my symptoms were real. In one week, school was starting and I was too dizzy to drive and too nauseous to even try to set up my classroom. I went back to my former doctor who was aware of my issues from the very beginning because he just happened to be the doctor on duty when I went to Doctors on Duty. He compassionately signed the paper. The disability counselor who handled my case felt bad and rushed the paperwork through because he and the folks that determine who gets disability believed that it was serious and true enough to award me disability. Fast forward to yesterday. I tried for over one year to get an appointment to get back on track with my female health. After waiting a long time past my actual appointment time, I was soon told by Dr. Ohlsen that she would not accept me as a patient because I had been to another doctor. Her demeanor was curt and unsympathetic. This was odd because she referred me to another doctor a few years ago when I had to find out what exactly was wrong because she was unable to help. After that, I saw many doctors until finally, with no help or concern from Dr. Ohlsen, I was diagnosed with vestibular migraines and irregular veins on the right side of my brain that were adding to my imbalance. My experience yesterday prompted me to write this review. I have never done such a thing but felt it necessary because the experience was inappropriate. I cannot recommend Dr. Ohlsen. Hitler at it's finest! Never thought a person, no less a physician, could be so cold and ruthless. Dr Ohlsen has no bedside manners or compassion for the very industry she works in. With a doctor and their office it should first and foremost be all about the "patient experience". This is not the case at this office. I arrived for my appointment 9 minutes late, due to my 9-5 professional working career job that pays for my medical bills, and was informed that my appointment was cancelled. Mind you it took me over 6 weeks just to get the appointment. Cancelled because I was late and was told to reschedule. I asked when that could be and the equally rude receptionist responded with a date that was another 6 weeks out. I said that this was not acceptable and that I had lab work done that caused me some concern and needed to be seen earlier. NOPE! Again they said that the next appointment I could get was 6 weeks out. Needless to say that the receptionist, office manager, AND the physician herself all stuck to their rules of the schedule. Did not hear "we'd be happy to work something out" or "if you can wait for after the next patient we can see about working you in"! I am applaud at this lack of customer service. Healthcare organizations and practices are heavily measured by their patient satisfaction scoring which does not seem to be of any great importance to Dr Ohlsen's practice. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRACTICE TO ANYONE! I work for a healthcare organization who makes recommendations to specialists in the area of Internal Medicine and Primary Care Physicians. I appreciate that she listens with care, hears my concerns, answers my questions with relevant, up to date information, and, when appropriate, suggests specific life style changes rather than drugs. If you want a collaborative relationship with your doctor, one who listens to how YOU feel, one respects YOUR thoughts about medication, treatment etc., DO NOT SEE HER. She refused to change an antibiotic for me when I asked to change because I didn't like how I was feeling on it. I was told to go to Urgent Care over the weekend if I didn't feel better​ since it was going to be a Friday (they aren't open on Fridays) and then the w/e. Ended up having a horrible reaction and took me off it. Also disagreed​ with another medication she prescribed. She terminated me as a patient "as I wasn't a good fit". Gave me 2 weeks when she is ethically supposed to give 30 days. Could file a complaint with the medical boards. Read that she did the same with someone else when they asked something from her that she disagreed with. Hmmmm...doctor knows best, eh? Well, one of the most rigid, authoritarian​ and treats with "harm" doctor I have encountered. BE AWARE!! read more

I had made an appointment two months in advance as a new patient. I arrived for my appointment ten minutes early and still waited thirty minutes PAST my appointment time. When I finally met Dr. Ohlsen she referred me to recommended doctor - no problem with that. My main gripe was having to pay $100 for an initial consult and then being billed an additional $200 two weeks later! Terrible service. I called her staff I told them that I started my period and asked to see if I am still able to see the doctor for my annual check up. I was told that the doctor doesn't want to see me if I had period. They have to reschedule me and then billed me for the cancellation fee of $25. So rediculus. read more

I spend half of the year in Carmel, but I wanted to have a physician in case I needed one while here. I found Dr. Ohlsen and I saw her on several occasions for at least 6 years. However, later on, in one of my visits to Carmel, when I needed to see her because of a terrible chest cold, I was told that since she hasn't seen me for "a long time" I had to wait at least for a week, or go to the emergency room, which I had to do since I was running a temperature. On my second attempt to see her, probably 6 months later, I was flat denied todo so. I was told by an extremely unpleasant receptionist, that I was out of Dr. Ohlsen's practice, and that she will only take me if any of her patients will leave. No apologies, no explanations! How about something called loyalty to patients? Right! Ironic thing: I'm back in Carmel and I need to find a physician, and going through some reviews I came across the ones for Dr. Ohlsen's. It gives an explanation of having some trouble because unfriendly personnel at her office, which it has been resolved... Really? A good professional makes sure everything works in an office before complaints, not after patients, thanks to the magic of the Internet, find out the way she/ he runs a practice. Happy to be "expelled" from her practice for not seeing her often enough! read more

I agree with other reviewers, in that Dr. Ohlsen, herself seems competent and is friendly. However, the office staff has been very unprofessional. Frist strike: Once I was scheduled for a breast exam and pap smear, rather than a complete physical which I intentionally scheduled, since my insurance company covers the full physical and I needed one. Second strike: About a year later, I called and requested a H1N1 Vaccine which I was told that they had, but the receptionist said she was not certain I would be able to receive one because it was for patients with compromised immune systems. It did not matter to her that I have had a stem cell transplant, chemotherapy and a splenectomy... She never called me back and I did not end up getting the H1N1 vaccine from my doctor's office. Third strike: I had a cough, and had come in contact with rodent droppings and dust and needed an appointment to rule out hantavirus. I was scheduled for the next day. As I am a professional and had a meeting that ran late, I called the office to notify them that I would be running between 10 and 15 minutes late, they responded that it would be cancelled. I could not make the appointment the next day that they offered me. I have now been charged $35 for a cancellation fee, that they cancelled! I've had it. I am taking my business elsewhere. Again, my interaction with Dr. Ohlsen was always positive, it is just a nightmare getting services. read more

Beware. This office doesn't know anything about HIPPA or accurate record keeping. I had to go into the ER and when the ER called to speak with Dr. Ohlsen regarding my history. I was a patient for over 6 years. Her associate Dr. Saito was on call. Apparently their records according to the ER doctor who spoke with Dr. Saito had no record of my medical condition or medication in my records. You can imagine my shock!!! I called to inquire and expressed my deep concern with the lack of accurate info, seeing as I personal fill out the medical history and know I list my chronic life threating condition, as I have had to be pro active regarding this condition since 1998. I scheduled an appointment and told the front desk "I want it noted that I have very serious concerns about my records and will be discussing this with Dr. Ohlsen when I come in next week". Yesterday the office called to cancel my appt stating that Dr. Ohlsen is referring me to a specialist. Today I open my mail to a letter of Notice of withdrawal from care. REALLY!!! all because I complained that the records regarding my very serious medical condition were not noted in my medical records and expressed how upset and shocked I was that my records were not up to date or accurate. I would think twice about this office if you care about your LIFE!!!!! read more
