Super simple restaurant, not really anywhere to sit besides the two little fold up tables, but ALWAYS pleasant staff and just WOW tacos...NO burritos, NO other food, just straight up AMAZING tacos... Been going to daves forever and I have never had them be rude, but today was the day. The guy taking our order missed one of our tacos and full on blew me off when I was trying to ask him about it. He shushed me as I was trying to reorder the taco that he missed. He was extremely short and rude the entier interaction and just absolutely treated me like i wasnt even a customer. Thats all on top of him charging us 17 bucks for 5 tacos and an extra dollor for a spoon full of onion and cilantro. What the hell happened to daves tacos. Never coming back again! Horrrible service. To begin my review, I have never taken the time to write a review for any restaurant even for the best of the best. If you are looking for an authentic Hispanic taco please go ELSEWHERE. I guess you can call me a taco connoisseur my family and I go to different trucks and spots to find the best tacos because tacos are a comfort food for lazy days and we simply like trying different places. To start I felt the lady at the front was hmmm how would you say very stale (I know that's probably not the right way to say it but I couldn't find the right word) wasn't welcoming or anything (that's fine no biggie I worked fast food and understand sometimes it's not your day). I get my food GUYS what in the world! Not to forget I got charged 3.00 for one taco and .50 for one more cup of salsa(I got 4 in total). With the economy right now obvi everything is expensive. But if you are only selling one thing on the menu they better be fire especially for 3.00. The salsa def 0/10 didn't have flavor wasn't spicy I added salt and lemon to fix it somewhat since I was on break AND STARVING. The tortilla was raw and cold. As in when picking the taco up the tortilla was breaking. The "pork" (stated on the menu) or sirloin as the lady said had a very gross teriyaki flavor I wasn't sure what I was eating almost tasted like chicken again I don't know but gross. The meat was chopped up in pieces like cat food. I've been to some places where it's finely chopped not a biggie again but I couldn't tell what meat was what meat. I used to eat here so much, then the sauce changed so we stopped coming. Started eating here again recently and they have been great every time. Small quaint place to grab a quick bite to eat for lunch. Menu has limited options, but that's perfect for this small venue. There is only seating available outside on tables/chairs; nice for a sunny day. I ordered a beef taco and a chicken taco; they came out in small bite sizes; very quick to finish it up. The meat was cut up in tiny cubes and tossed in there with some cilantro and radishes (and lathered w/ hot sauce). Each taco is $1.75 each; pretty pricey! You're in a crappy location, with crappy customer service, and have all of your employees geared with crappy attitudes. The service we received was close to what the other reviews said. They weren't very friendly but not rude. Short conversation and straight to the point. The tacos were not my cup of tea at all. I'm not sure if I was expecting something that I shouldn't have being that it was a little restaurant type place. But I was expecting street tacos. The carne asada meat was sweet and had the texture of some other type of meat. The sauce (not salsa) they use is king of sweet too. I wouldn't go back but glad we tried it out because we've heard nothing but good things about this place, but just wasn't for us. read more

The most unpleasant dining experience I've ever had was today at Dave's tacos. To start off, the woman taking the orders was extremely unpleasant. She was unattentive enough to get my order wrong which I requested to be corrected (she gave me beef tongue instead of beef). After I politely asked for a replacement from a guy with a mustache who (Dave himself?) refused to replace EVEN ONE of the tacos with the rationale of "you've already paid for them." I'll remind everyone that at Dave's Tacos, like many other restaurants, you pay for your food BEFORE you get it, so unless I was psychic, I would have no way of knowing if my order was wrong. After trying to explain all I wanted was to trade the beef tongue tacos for beef, he rudely insisted the only way I could get a replacement was to pay full price for it... I work in customer service, and to be honest, I'm not a fan of over the top customer service or fake politeness, but I at LEAST expect common courtesy at an establishment that is trying to compete for my business, which it will no longer get. Not only are the tacos average and overpriced, but if I wanted to be treated like a second-rate citizen by jerks who hate their jobs I would have gone to the DMV. Outside sitting is old fashioned but in winter it is great and not so comfortable in our hot summer days . These guys have never heard of customer service. Spent $50 on an order and they forgot a soda because its too loud inside for them to hear. When he added the soda charged me extra because the order was under $10. When I asked about the fee he said he couldn't hear me and shut the window. Perfect tacos, but you will be eating them in a busy parking lot with bums approaching you for money and a porta potty in the parking lot. We eat them in the back of our pickup so we can sit in the shade. That said, it's my family's favorite restaurant just because we all love the tacos and sauce so much. You won't get a grisly piece of beef. It ends up being fairly pricey if you have to feed teenagers; my son can eat 8 but it's healthy, good quality food so I don't complain. We could be spending the same amount at McD's feeding him and it wouldn't be as healthy. Don't be a baby - go for the hot! Dave's kids are now running it and they now take atm cards. Unfortunately, the quality has suffered slightly since Dave left - sometimes the sauce is cold, meat cut differently (all small things), but the new tables, chairs, and atm ability compensate for the changes. Went about a year ago it was horrible. Had an appointment at Kaiser and wanted to give it another shot since this place used to be so well known. It was horrible. The food looked great however had no flavor the salsa was bland as well. I had to add aloe of salt. I found it odd they had a big salt shaker full but then I realized why. The food literally has no flavor. I gave it two stars because my son actually liked it. And the presentation was fresh and pretty. The meat had no flavor just cooked meat and the salad just tasted like tomato soup with something sweet in it. Or favorite place is Ben Paca in the East side and I'd make the drive any day over this most now. I really don't know how you can mess up a street taco but it was done for me today. I love Dave's Tacos! From looking at the other reviews, I sense that this is not the widespread opinion, but I really don't care. I love them, and that's all there is to it. Either they are an acquired taste or maybe they are just one of those things you either love or you hate. Let's be honest, it doesn't look like much from the outside. It's a tiny ancient looking building in a parking lot just off of Garces Circle on Chester. There are chairs and tables set up in the parking lot and if you feel the need for a restroom it's a port-a-potty. Hey, they're actually moving up in the world since the "adult bookstore" next door was torn down! The port-a-potty used to be located on the side wall of the "adult" building; you couldn't have PAID me to use it then! They have wasted no time nor energy creating ambiance. You're definitely coming here for the food, not the atmosphere, so skip this as a first date spot if you're trying to impress her with your sophistication. To start with, the menu is very focused. That's a nice way to say it is extremely limited. Your options are tacos... or tacos... or tacos. Well, okay, you can get them made with beef tri-tip, beef tongue, or chicken, for $1.60 each. You can get them with everything (onion and cilantro) or with just meat if you're a purist. You can order them mild, medium or hot. Either way you get the exact same sauce, just more or less of it. They come out looking like a "street taco" but wrapped in a double layer of corn tortillas so they don't fall apart. I always order them spicy so they arrive very messy, and I spill sauce everywhere (though the corn tortillas do protect my fingers somewhat! My brother gets them medium. With less sauce on each one, he manages not to make a complete mess. They also arrive with a lime quarter to squeeze over everything. They have drinks on the menu ("Pepsi not Coke" is one of the listed items, LOL) and I believe churros are on there too. They serve the drinks with crushed ice, my FAVORITE kind. I am convinced it keeps the drinks cooler and makes my soda taste better. Please don't shatter my illusions by telling me something different. It's really fun to live in my world - I don't need a reality check! My brother became excited when he discovered the ice, so it's not just me! Anyway, I view eating in a parking lot as part of the adventure. Although now that the "bookstore" has been torn down, there is a lot less "interesting" people-watching to be had. I've never been approached by a "bum" so that's never been an issue for me. P.S. They do take credit cards now, though if your purchase is less than $10 they will add on a $.50 surcharge for credit card purchases (ID required). read more

I had moved away and just recently moved back to Bakersfield and today I was driving by Dave's and I thought, "i should get some tacos there, they were amazing back in the day." SO I DID. A buddy and I stopped and each ordered two steak, and two chicken tacos with a coke. TOTAL PRICE $9.50!!! Holy Cow! For 4 tacos and a coke????? Thats a $5 meal at any other taco truck in town. Long story, I paid it because of how amazing I remember them. I tried to make some small talk and joke around with the high school girl taking my order (being that there was NO ONE else around and it was 5:30pm) and she wasnt having it, not even a smile or a thanks for ordering. Tacos took 10min to get after ordering......remember I said that we were the only ones there.....why? because they are amazing? NOT The steak tacos were okay. Tough (im guessing they were tri-tip) and not enough heat in the small amount sauce they had on them. The chicken were worse. They were dry as if they were cut up breast pieces. Long story short, I was less than impressed. Conclusions: Go somewhere else where the tacos are $1 each, and the customer service is amazing. Location: Meh, it's a beige colored stand across the street from the SJV hospital and pretty easy to miss. Lawn chair seating in front of the stand serves as the dining area. Tacos: Chicken, beef, or beef tongue on double six inch corn tortillas topped with onions, cilantro, and sauce. That's it. The meat could have been marinated a bit longer - it tasted bland and dry. The sauce didn't taste fresh - I keep picturing a bottle of a orange colored sauce with a picture of a smiling guy wearing a sombrero on the white label. It tasted like that sauce. Cash only. If you plan to brown paper bag it and BYOB, the business next door kindly requests "don't bang alcohol in the lot". read more

Ok... so I pull up to Dave's Tacos for my first time ever. I see 2 people waiting for food. No other customers are there. I smiled and greeted the girl behind the counter. She didnt even crack a smile. I ordered 2 chicken and 2 beef tacos. It took about 5 minutes and the food came out. The tacos were small. Most mexican tacos are, so that's fine. They are less than 2 bucks each. I ate 4 tacos and I'm still hungry. I could eat at least 2 more. Now for the most important part- Taste: In all honesty... I have no clue how some of you guys can vote 5 stars. That means "As good as it gets." REALLY? Woooow! If you really think that Dave's Tacos are as good as it gets, then it tells me you havent had many other tacos. Here's what I tasted- I took a bite of the chicken first. I couldn't even tell it was chicken by the taste. It was very bland. Even with the "famous" sauce. Then I took a bite of the beef taco. It tasted exactly the same as the chicken. The only way I could tell a difference between the two was from the texture of the beef, and by looking at it of course. The sauce was super weak. No heat at all.. almost has a sweet taste... Bottom Line is this, Dave's Tacos are nothing to write home about. I'd eat there again, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get there. read more

I love tacos and I have eaten tacos all over. Dave's didn't do it for me. The portions are small and the prices are high and the quality is on the lower end. We were in the neighborhood and tried this place out of curiosity and it was disappointing. The salsa is similar to Tapatio/Tabasco sauce, the meat was dry and the place is a complete dump. The service was not friendly and really for an overpriced set of tacos I would at least like some courtesy. You may just be better off going to a run down taco truck. Tacos are pretty good the beef taco had a little sweet taste but tasty. The customer service could be a little better. She could have been a little more welcoming. After the little Itty bitty tacos were ready she slid them to me and closed the window and didnt look up at all. Been fan and patron since 87 and of course I've had a few bad experiences with the quality of the meat in the past. Not a big deal, it's Dave's and I always went back and found it great again. Taco portions are extremely small. I ordered my hot sauce on the side because I happened to see someone else there eating. They make a soup of the tacos with hot sauce, so beware. The meats all tasted the same and were cut identical. I don't think I will come back, every other Mexican place I have tried in Bakersfield has been better. read more
