Oh boy. Where to even start. I came in starving for some steak or some type of beef. Since I work out regularly, I asked for the highest protein and tastiest item that is available on the menu. I was promptly guided to the steak fajitas. I asked for double steak, and asked if it would be an issue, since some restaurants won't offer it, or just do "extra". EJ said, for the extra charge, I'll make it happen. No hassle, simply offered exactly what I requested. Then I asked for spicy salsa. The kind mom or grandma makes that is spicy enough to leave that tingly feeling on your tongue right before burning it off. They actually have arbol red salsa. This spot is in the next town over and it's always on our list to go for weekend breakfast. These guys make some of the best Pozole and Menudo around. The broth is flavorful, the meat cuts are consistent and reasonable, and the portions are big. They also kill it on chilaquiles. Nice spicy Chile sauce, crunchy housemade chips, and crispy chorizo on top. One of the best around. The other day we had seafood and we're not disappointed. The Caldo de Siete Mares had a great chipotle flavor and lots of seafood. My wife's mojarra frita was also well done. Definitely don't hesitate to go for a drive and check these guys out. read more

We were in Shafter this afternoon and had to stop by for lunch. As previously, we were greeted at the door with welcoming hello's and stepped into what is now our favorite booth. Immediately EJ came over with menus and water. After pouring over the specials and the menu, hubby decided on the Chile Colorado Burrito, wet and I chose the Sizzling Enchiladas al Pastor special. While we waited for our meals, we chowed down on warm, seasoned chips and chunky, spicy salsa. (Woo-wee, that salsa is spicy) Lunch arrived and hubby's burrito was huge, covered in red sauce with a dollop of fresh sour cream. My lunch consisted of three sizzling enchiladas on a very hot skillet with cotija cheese, sour cream, and a side plate of beans and rice, mmm, yum. If you're looking for a little kick, be sure to ask for their homemade red sauce (they also have a green sauce). We left there satisfied and with leftovers for dinner. read more

This was the best Mexican food I have ever tasted. I've visited many Mexican restaurants over the years and El Michoacano is worth the drive to Shafter. The food was so flavorful. I had a cheese enchilada, ground beef taco, rice, and beans. Every bite was perfection. Even the refried beans were so delicious, well I was pleasantly surprised. Our waitress was so nice and made some suggestions to us about their sauces. She hit the mark! If I could give this restaurant 10 stars, I would. Please make the drive to Shafter. I've had catering and delivery from here on several occasions. The food was always flavorful and filling. My go to's included burritos tacos, and combo plates of veggies, shrimp, or fish. I'm in town looking for lunch and decide to stop in. It's a good crowd and service doesn't miss a beat. I'm immediately greeted and seated. The waiter asks for my drink order as I'm seated--efficiency! I take my seat, look at the menu. Camarones a la Puerto Vallarta calls to me and place my order. Immediately afterwards chips and salsa arrive at my table. The chips are fresh and a bit thicker (like it this way as thinner chips get burnt easily and can get greasy). The salsa has a hint of heat. Awesome. Food arrives and it's hot and fresh. The flour tortillas are rolled up and warm. The shrimp is in a comfort food like sauce, with bell peppers and garlic. Mix it with the beans, rice, and tortilla, it's a medley that truly comforts you. It's a sizable potion, so I didn't quite eat everything. As they cleared my plate, the table next to me had their fajitas arrive on a sizzling skillet. It smelled wonderful! Next time! Overall, great food and service. What a treat! Some of the best Mexican food I have had in this area! I had only been to Shafter a handful of times and had seen this restaurant before in passing. One of the nicer looking ones on the main drag. What took me so long to eat here? We were with a large group and this had been someone else's suggestion that lived in town. Love trying new places, especially family owned where much of the food is homemade. There were 9 of us for 530pm on a Sunday night. The menu is large and varied. I always choose enchiladas. I knew I wanted very spicy and that I wanted shrimp. The owner stated the shrimp are fresh, Perfect. 3 enchiladas shrimp a la diabla with all rice (I was able to sub more rice and leave off the beans) The sauce you will never forget! Whooo, hot! Yes! (I paid for it a bit later but allll worth it!) I really liked the rice too. I knew this place was legit when the comped chips and homemade salsa had come out. The salsa has a kick. Mmmm. Fresh onion, cilantro, I loved it. I had some food to take home for later and people had fun trying the hot sauce on my plate without trying to turn beet red. I would say it was a 9/10 on the heat scale while remaining very tasty. There is 1 steak item on the menu I was told that is THE hottest thing they have. Maybe next time. Staff tried to get all of our food out at once and we had no complaints. Everyone got something different and liked their meal. Hubby had a steak platter and he said the meat could have been a bit more tender but hey, for $13.50, we know filet will not be the meat served, right? Tasty tortillas came with that. My enchiladas were $11.50, good deal and my Corona was served nice and cold. Minor things: I did not drink from the plastic cup of water as it did not taste filtered. And, there was a 76 cent charge added to our bill for using a credit card that we were not expecting. Not a big deal, I just do not like surprises. Great service. We never felt rushed out, we had been asked how everything was and we were provided to-go boxes. Hubby purchased a small piece of flan for later (homemade) and he really liked it. Parking available in the rear. Cute place. I liked the owner, it was clean enough and the food is authentically GOOD! Will surely return. read more

Horrible service we sat there for over an hour with no chips or salsa nor guacamole that we had ordered when we first sat down. We ended up asking for it to go and our fajitas looked dry. They said that the fajitas had just came out but they weren't sizzling. A couple that sat behind us got their food and finished before our food was even done. 1 hour to be exact I wouldn't recommend it. For those of you that miss Teresa's chili verde from Wasco this is a good substitute. It's very similar. Not as hot but still spicy. We had the micheleda and it was pretty good. The tortillas were a little over cooked for my liking. Have to pay $1.50 for chips and salsa which ill pass on next time. Pet peeve rant. We were told to sit where we like and picked a table that appeared to be clean. After sitting we noticed it hadn't been wiped clean. That's gross!! Stopped in on our way home because of the rave reviews. It did not disappoint! A little warm inside, it was a very warm May day. Friendly Staff and the food was delicious! Granddaughter had the Strawberry Agua Fresca and raved about it!! We will make the extra trek to enjoy again. Tried this place a couple of times and found it to be mediocre at best. I had the chile verde and found it to be lacking in flavor and no heat in relation too spice level. Tried the carne asada torta and found the amount of meat to be small compared to the bread and veggies ratio. Flavor was decent. I did try the micheladas and found them to be good but not my best.
