I fell for the aesthetic toasts like everyone else but didn't leave as wholly disappointed as many others here. I am often teased (lovingly, I should say) by friends for being overzealous and reading up on everything about an eatery before I visit. There is something to be said for that and expectation setting because I knew that the prices for some dishes (like the uni spaghetti at $24, slices of toast for $12, and lattes for $7) were a tad steep, and that it's difficult on most days to find an available seat. I planned accordingly. It was actually perfect to visit during a dreary rainstorm, because I easily found a couple of counter seats. Davelle also has a gloomy vibe pulled straight out of a Miyazaki film, complete with no interior windows and gray walls made to look very lived in. Cozying up with a hojicha latte and a curry dish was my idea of a great afternoon. The food was pretty good, with the black sesame & cream cheese toast being a standout. The uni spaghetti was buttery and the uni had nice flavor to it but you pay quite the pretty penny for the uni on this small dish. I was still hungry by the end of my meal so I ordered another toast, this time the red bean one. It was not even a fraction as good as the black sesame one and $12 a pop for these toasts definitely feels like a lot to spend, but I enjoy the novelty of it. Sometimes it's just nice to be around adorable things, and the food at this cafe is almost too pretty to eat. For that I'd consider Davelle great place for a casual afternoon hang with some tasty bites. Take my tip about visiting when it's rainy and revel in the ultimate hygge experience. read more

The Matcha Latte and Mentai Spagetti, however, were worth it! One of my favorite cafes in the city and I would only go out of my way for this cafe! My top favorite meal is always the berry cream cheese toast with the hojicha latte! Berry & cream cheese toast; 5/5; the fluffy toast just complements the berry and cream cheese itself. With the soft, sweet and a bit salty taste just satisfies the cravings. The jam and cream cheese has the perfect balance and it doesn't overpower the toast. Hojicha latte; 5/5; their hojicha latte is amazing! I love how they sifted the powder and they weren't lazy about it unlike most cafe shops. I also love how they don't make it overwhelmingly sweet and it's a enjoyable dark roasted green tea latte. Davelle is a cozy and comforting Japanese food place known for their aesthetic toasts and I enjoyed the toasts a lot. They're quite pricey for what they are, but everything for the camera! haha The toasts itself was quite yummy and I was a fan of both the black sesame and lemon toast we ordered. The ambience was quite cozy, but there were few tables so I imagine it can get quite loud and crowded during lunchtime. The mentai toast was disappointingky mundane--the milk bread was fluffy, but rather thin and evaporated in a few bites. The flavor was there, but not complex nor creative in any way. Definitely not worth the $11 I paid for it. The sesame kinako latte ($6.5) was heartwarming and struck a delicate balance between sweet and sesame; however, it wasn't extraordinary and got quite grainy towards the bottom. Not sure whether it's worth another visit to try the curry katsu and pastas ($15-20), to be honest. The food is as amazing as they look. The people there are so kind and the service is good. The location is very small and bit tight, but we make due. Loved it! Very solid. I need to update this review once I try their toasts/brunch items because that's what they're known for but I was hungry so we tried the Chicken Katsu Curry and the Karaage. Very good! I had no complaints at all, the chicken was soft, juicy, well flavored. Curry was great. Portion was decent. I also really liked the black sesame latte (decaf btw). My friend and I went for a weekend brunch, and every table was full across the bar, indoor and outdoor seating, but they were able to accommodate us quickly. My friend had the chicken katsu with pork curry, and we shared the honey lemon toast, sesame and berry toast, and chicken karaage. The karaage with mustard was delicious and so crispy, while the sesame and berry toast was rich, sweet and so satisfying that reminded me of an elevated PB&J! My friend liked her katsu curry as well. The honey and lemon toast was beautiful, but honestly did not have much flavor. Our main issue was unfortunately the service, which while friendly was not very attentive. We ordered the black sesame kinako latte and hoji-cha latte, which we waited for for over 20 minutes before going inside and asking them. Then they forgot about the drinks again for another 20 minutes so we reminded them again and had to ask them a third time. We gave up on the drinks and we were inclined to get the check and just ask them to axe the drinks we didn't receive when they finally arrived at the tail end along with the checks. The drinks were okay in that they were good, but the sesame flavor was lacking and given the wait it was not worth it. Davelle's has been on my go-to list for a long time after discovering it on Instagram, but unlike most of the social media hyped places, this one lived up to most of the expectations. This quaint Japanese coffee shop next to the Williamsburg bridge has been on my list for a while. I was hoping to bring back memories of eating thick Texas toast at a similar old cafe next to the Okubo Chuo Line station in Tokyo. The toast was indeed very good. I had it with the Instagrammable black sesame-cream cheese topping that seems to be the most popular. It was a nice balance of sweet and savory, and paired well with a flat white on a rainy day. I was told the (unfortunately non-vegetarian) katsu curry was good too. Speaking of which, I wish they had a few more veg options. It's a really small place with mainly stools inside for the seating. There is outdoor seating. I was seated literally to the right of the entrance and it wasn't a table and in front of a mirror. When the food arrived, it was hard to place several dishes to share since most of the plates couldn't fit. We had to eat one plate at a time. Also, there wasn't anyone who came to check up on us and gave us water when we sat down. Overall, I feel like this place is a bit overpriced and not really worth it. Knocked off a star for their service. They rushed us so much when we haven't been there for that long. I get the place is small and there's a wait, but if there's still food on my plate don't start removing it. Food-wise, the Katsu curry was the star of the show. A cute place to enjoy food with minimal company. There isn't a lot of space so ideally you'd come here for more 1:1 or small group meetings. The seating is very tight and there wasn't enough space for our 3 plates and required a bit of shuffling. Additionally outdoor seating beware of wasps flying around trying to get a taste of your food. There is a variety of options where you can get toast, curries, or noodles. The curry is a lot and drowns the rice, and just a touch of cheese. The flavors are a bit unbalanced and on the lighter side, which isn't my personal preference. In addition, I ordered a side of karage ($6), crispy fried chicken with a yummy sweet and savory sauce. Of the two, the karage was definitely the more delicious and helped me fill up. However, the order came with exactly six small pieces of chicken, which I thought was a bit paltry for the price. While the food was good, my biggest gripe with this establishment is the prices. Davelle is one of those places that you'll likely find on Instagram with the aesthetic food pictures. You'll come in with high expectations of how amazing your food will taste, to then be disappointed by how average the food is. Arriving at 3pm on Saturday there was a 45 minute waiting list with no host in sight. My boyfriend and I put our names down and came back to be seated. The host was a little disorganized acting as both a host and a server and seated us at the coffee bar area. The space was small and the seating tight but it was manageable. What I didn't appreciate was the lack of attention to detail when we were seated. The party next to us was inconsiderate enough to have their half completed drink in front of my seat and never moved it even after they left. The baristas work right behind the table and should have realized/asked to have the drink disposed. I eventually brought it to their attention and they immediately disposed of the drink. We ordered the berry and cream cheese toast, the chicken katsu curry with mozzarella cheese and onsen tomago, and the napolitan spaghetti. To wash it down we had a hot hojicha latte and matcha au lait with coffee jelly. The berry and cream cheese toast was decent taste wise but I felt like the bread is allowed to sit too long because the bread isn't very warm and the inside of the bread hardened where it should be soft. The chicken katsu curry with mozzarella and onsen tomago was disappointing. The curry was not hot enough, they give you 5 strands of mozzarella for 2 dollars extra, and they don't give nearly enough curry. The only saving graces were the crispy chicken katsu and the velvety soft and runny onsen egg. I wouldn't recommend this dish. My partner had the napolitan spaghetti which was pretty good but not amazing. The real stars of the visit were the drinks. The hot hojicha latte was perfectly frothy, silky, smoky, and just amazing. The matcha au lait with coffee jelly was sweet without being overwhelming and balanced by the bittersweet coffee jelly. I really wanted to like this place but the inconsistent service and the lackluster food didn't justify the long wait. If you can come in for a quick matcha fix, great. The place was already full when we got there - it's pretty small, just 3 tables and some space at the bar - so understandably we had to put our names down on the wait list. After walking around for about an hour and getting coffee nearby, we got seated (they told us it would be an hour wait and it ended up being so!) Of the toasts we tried, the honey lemon was my favorite, since it was both sweet and sour, and the bread was super buttery. No wait on a Saturday afternoon around 2-3pm. We enjoyed the matcha and sesame lattes. I really liked the uni pasta and my partner liked the curry (it was a bit too sweet for my taste) but wished he had ordered the katsu instead of the karaage. The toast breads felt a little stale and plain. I'm not sure if the bread was toasted and buttered but it would be better if it were (or had more butter..?)
