I've been holding onto a vintage datsun key blank looking for someone I could trust with it and Dave was the man. He cut it beautifully and fulfilled an aesthetic request of mine to only cut one side of the key. In addition he dug up an old OEM nissan key which he cut and gave to me as a gift, what a guy! This is my first Yelp review and I finally decided to write one, secondary to my excellent experience with Dave the Key Man. My day started finding out that our front door deadbolt... dead. It's super stuck solid shut from the inside, and when the key's inserted outside, it just turns but does nothing. We're locked from the inside. Well, not really, we can still use the garage door. And looking at the glass half full, that's still better than being locked from the outside. I digress... I searched the all-knowing Youtube on how I could possibly McGyver my way out of my current conundrum. I decided against it as the state of the lever covered a screw, and forcing it would kill the thread on the head. Plus I had to landspeeder my way through traffic soon in order to bring my younglings to school. Next logical thing was to search the great holocron of knowledge - seek help from Yelp! I don't have any locksmith on speed dial on my comlink and was my first time having to need the services of one. Not fun. Found a good number of 'em, and quickly checked on criteria that mattered to me at the time -- a. Can take my call (early in the morning) b. Proximity to my house c. Rating d. Total number of reviews e. Reading samples of +/- reviews. d. Ability to service within the day I found one that checked all my boxes. A young-ish man answered, after I explained my situation, he started asking me questions. My name, my phone number. I felt things were being rushed. I asked for the my criteria -- how much credits do I need to shell out. After I was given a range, he then proceeded to ask me my address. At that point I wan uninterested, I told him to just call me after an hour. It was a very mechanical conversation and I how could I entrust access to my house to somebody whom I'm not even comfortable talking on the phone? Then I found Dave. Checked all the boxes. Very pleasant on the phone, good listener, gave me a reasonable quote (based on the range I've been reading). He told me he's booked for the day (another good sign for me), but told me he'd shoot for an afternoon swing-by. Oh, and he never even asked for my address at all, just my general location. Almost two hours passed his ETA, I called him again, he advised me he's still on the job in the Pen, and on to another one and asked if I'm cool at an early evening visit instead. I'm cool. When he was ready to head over, that was the only time he asked for the address. Eventually he arrived as promised. Very respectful of the place (asked if it's a shoes-or-no-shoes house), went inside and straight to the door. One thing I noticed was he never scoped the interior of the house at all. From the garage access, he just went straight to the job. I was impressed. As he worked on the door, he talked and walked me through what could have happened, what he's currently doing, and the remedy he'd take, and then some. Length of service was approrpriately prompt but didn't feel like he lightspeeded you through it. Payment was as quoted, and as I've said, very reasonable. I believe in whenever you pay peanuts, be prepared to get monkeys. He fairly charges what his work is worth. He even guaranteed his work for as long as 5 years. Wanted to pay through check, but decided to pay cash instead, he issued a receipt. He's a good communicator, a sincere one too. In the course of us discussing home security, of me possibly needing a re-keying service and him suggesting his most cost-efficient ideas, we also got to talk about hobbies, projects, of keeping sharp, the value of giving back, and about a recent local community event we apparently both attended as volunteers. He articulated his pride for his craft and the importance of trustworthiness. These are values that I subscribe to and I'm glad to hear them from Dave. Highly recommended. I will tell the Emperor that if ever a door needs opening on that grand space station in the sky, I've found the official Imperial keymaster. I honestly wish my family, friends, or every Trooper, Ewok, Jedi, or alien I know get locked-out so I can refer Dave to them. Dave is great, accommodating, really nice, and very knowledgeable. He's been working on cars for almost 4 decades! He gave me an accurate quote of what it would take and would it would cost. It also helped that actually knew about older cars like mine (30+ year old Oldsmobile) so he knew what it would take to open the trunk, where I left my keys, without causing any damage. He was quick and professional. We waited for about half an hour for him, and he got our door open in two minutes. Made us two extra copies free of charge in his van. I would give him 6 stars if I could! After a long weekend of moving my finance lost his car key. We called a locksmith, but they don't create cars keys so they referred us to Dave the key man. We called Dave on a Sunday at 7:30 and he said he'd be over in about 15 minutes or gave us a slightly cheaper option for Monday morning. We opted for Sunday so my fiance could make it to work on time the next day. Once he arrived Dave was able to get into the car without causing damage, while in the process of pulling of the door panel to get the code to create the key my fiance found the "lost" key. He made a couple copies of the car key. While he was there I had him change the locks to the outside garage door to match the front door so I only need 1 key instead of 3! He also repaired the key I had created at a local home improvement store that didn't open on my front door like it should have. Dave was knowledgeable, polite, and gave us a fair price. I also really enjoyed our conversation about locks, which I started since I've always been curious about how locks work. I'm a pretty successful small business owner (with great reviews) and I drive like an slow turtle but does that make me mentally challenge or incapable of running my business? There's no point of writing a negative review on Dave's driving if this has NOTHING to do with his work ethics. In fact, his work is quite impressive. I have just recently moved and needed Dave to help re-key all the main locks. He was very knowledgeable with what I needed since I needed to change some of the faces of the locks. He even went above and beyond to repair my main door so that I am able to open and close the door smoothly without having to tug at/from it. I was house and pet sitting for my mom when somehow in my zealousness to separate yowling felines, I locked a bedroom door. With an 18 pound angry cat behind it.
