I love Hibachi cooking. And I have tried everyone one of the Columbus area "Japanese" steakhouses (usually owned by Koreans or Vietnamese, not Japanese). My favorite of all is Daruma in Hilliard. Very clean, great shrimp (pawns)! Loved the way they cooked lobster too. I dislike bean sprouts, but Daruma uses noodles instead. While some Hibachi places use small shrimp, Daruma uses larger prawns which were EXCELLENT. I strongly recommend Daruma in Hilliard. read more

Yummy! The food is great so are the chefs! Saw one throw a piece of chicken across the room into a kids mouth at another table. It is by far the best Japanese steakhouse we've been to in the Columbus area. It's a large restaurant but has a pretty common feel for a japanese steakhouse. I got the tofu, which came out before the other food, but was sill delicious. If you are a fan of soft shell crab i definitely recommend it as well. You also get noodles with your entree, it's usually extra at other places. DO NOT make your reservation online (opentable), they don't check it! We had to wait a lot longer than expected due to this, but luckily the food made up for the poor management of their reservations. read more

We had a party of 14 people, and we showed up 30mjn before closing time. They served us with great attitudes and never once rushed us to leave. Food, presentation, service, all amazing. Hands down the best hibachi I have ever had. I also ordered sushi and it was very high quality. Chef came out to our table and made sure we were happy. Hibachi is hibachi , a great chef/entertainer makes the difference. Unfortunately we got the chef that wanted to cook the food as fast as possible and get away from the table. The only cooking setting he knew was max temperature. The noodles he prepared barely had any taste what so ever. I believe the flavor was burnt noodle with a hint of brown mystery flavor sauce . As soon as they hit the table top , i was like awww shit there goes the noodles.... Pretty much everything he prepared had a burnt flavor to an extent. The chef didn't mess up the chicken or steak but again could've used some more flavor. The one high point was the sushi, I got the Hawaii roll and that was pretty damn tasty. The $2 up charge for fried rice i thought was bullshit too. Who doesn't get fried rice at hibachi? And to go along with the semi disappointing meal, the table next to us had 3 damn birthdays. Sounded like the Indians were taking back their land beating a drum for 5 minutes straight . Again I'm just a normal guy who likes his food to taste good. read more

Please don't give this restaurant your business, as I was treated pretty poorly and have ordered from this place many times. The last three times, they have gotten my order wrong. The last time, was the worst and that is what finally prompted me to want to warn others. Don't order through their website, especially for a delivery. I received the wrong meals last night, packaged wrong (they packed the bag with the wrong food, put my ticket on it). When I contacted them, they first tried to blame DoorDash and don't seem to understand their own delivery system and that a customer can order delivery THROUGH THEIR WEBSITE. They then contracted out DoorDash drivers to deliver the food, not in-house delivery drivers. So, that means when there's an issue, they can't deliver your order or correct it. First, I was passed around to 4 different people because apparently no one understand what "You messed up my order, please fix it, I can't eat this." means. I don't eat red meat, and that was all that was delivered. They said if I wanted my correct order, I would have to drive there and pick it up from them (and forfeit my delivery fee). When I said I couldn't leave my wife who just had surgery, they said all they could do was a refund. BUT even that couldn't be handled until "today or tomorrow" when a manager would "call me about this issue". Today, I find out that they charged my card TWICE for this dinner. One accurate amount and one inaccurate one. Both are charged to me. So, they charged me twice, delivered someone else's dinner, and didn't refund me. Please don't order from this place. They treated and talked to me like I didn't matter and I was charged over $150 for a dinner that I have not received. I will be getting a refund or calling my credit card company to dispute all charges. Likely the latter, because I don't want to deal with this place and their disrespect and mishandling of the simplest of customer service issues. read more

Called ahead and reserved for 12 people. They said it would be ok to put 12 at a table but their max is 11. As a result our group was split in 2. This was a slight inconvenience, but they were very budy and accomodated for us as best they could. Our chef was a homie and he made dinner gery enjoyable. Had a wonderful time with me and my friends. Would definitely return, but perhaps not during peak hours or with a group this big. read more

My family and I went to Daruma on the recommendation of my brother. Upon entering the space, we noticed it was not a busy day in their establishment. The Space seemed warm although , not 100% authentic. We were somewhat impressed by the Hibachi dishes, however, the sushi was a bit of a letdown. If you want fresh sushi, I would instead make the trip up to Akai Hana. The wait staff was very welcoming, and very accommodating at the table. My two children are vegetarian, and were initially served a soup with chicken broth, but the server quickly noticed this fact, and replaced their soup with a veggie miso version. I heard that one of the pros of this restaurant is that they serve an extra noodle with the hibachi orders, but both my wife and I found the noodles to be both lacking flavor and unnecessary. Overall, we had a good experience. Daruma is a solid choice for a hibachi experience, but if your looking for impressive sushi and flavorful Asian dishes, I would choose elsewhere. read more

Welp I definitely must say my fellow Yelpers did not steer us wrong with this one! I work in the area and have had Daruma on my list for quite a while but hubby and I are not usually in Hilliard together. We finally stopped in last Monday and I must shamefully admit I considered leaving just based off of the exterior - side note, if you've read some of my previous reviews you'll note this seems to be a common theme, when will I ever learn?! In any case, my wise husband, who never knocks anything until he tries it, convinced me to stay and we were both so glad we did! Every single review was on point about everything so I will not harp on some of the common themes, such as the delicious broth and salad dressing. However, I will reiterate that Daruma has THE best and most talented hibachi chefs in the Columbus area - and we've left no stone unturned in our quest to make this determination! This wasn't just your average "fire volcano & done" show but rather elaborate, even including flying eggs (both whole and cooked). But the food, you guys, oh the food! The fattie - er, I mean the foodie - in me is drooling just thinking about it. Again, I urge you please do not take this statement lightly: this is THE best fried rice we've had in Columbus across all domains, including hibachi, sit-down restaurants, and delivery or carry out. It's also probably top 3 fried rice I've had anywhere, which includes both big city markets, like NYC and Miami, as well as small towns, like Tallahassee and Jacksonville. I had the chicken and shrimp and they were both also better than at any other hibachi restaurant we've been to in Columbus. I am salivating thinking about the taste and already planning my return - perhaps I'll even sneak out on my lunch break to satisfy my obsession! P.S: The secret ingredient is the garlic butter that they generously lather on everything and is life itself. Overall, I was disappointed. The parking lot was littered with broken glass, almost like someone had broken a car window. The first thing you see when you enter the restaurant is a poorly kept koi pond. We were promptly seated--but one of our chairs was broken so we had to switch it out. Everything was sticky...the plates, the silverware, the soy sauce container. One of our dishes was dirty, which the waiter noticed and brought us a new one. You can order hibachi at a regular table, which is what we did. We ordered the chicken hibachi which came with chicken, noodles, fried rice (+ $2.00, which we weren't told about), an array of vegetables, and two pieces of shrimp. The two shrimp just felt silly and unnecessary (I honestly thought they showed up by accident). In addition, it came with two miso mushroom soups (which were good) and two house salads. It also came with two different sauces on the side. That was all for one order of chicken hibachi. It was a lot of food, but unfortunately none of it was very good. I'm not a huge fan of zucchini and carrots, but that's just a personal preference. The chicken was overcooked, so it was very dry. The noodles just tasted like oil. My partner enjoyed the fried rice; it truly as fried rice with lots of little egg bits. To me, everything just tasted very charred. There's a good, subtle char that I appreciate, but this food just tasted like someone hadn't cleaned the cook surface in a while. The chicken hibachi was the only hibachi option that wasn't over $20. While it was a TON of food (even for two people), I still left feeling disappointed in what my money purchased. I think the restaurant would greatly benefit by stripping the dish of all of its frivolous accompaniments (random two shrimp, soup, salad) and just focus on great, flavorful hibachi at a lower price point. I think you're also paying for the experience of watching the hibachi chef work, which we chose to forgo. We also ordered the aged dashi tofu, which was a nice and simple palate cleanser. We also ordered the spider roll and eel avocado roll. Overwhelmingly disappointing. Everything was saucy and wet. The soft shell crab was soggy without any hint of crunch. Yeah. I don't know what all the rage is about this place. Got here on a Sunday 2 hours before they close. I was with 3 other adults. We ordered some sushi, dumplings and edamame as an appetizer. All of which were mediocre. The sushi was just okay. Really nothing to write home about. Dumplings were flavorful, but small. Really small. The edamame was, you guessed it, just okay. As for the hibachi part of the meal things were typical. Same show no matter where you go. All the same jokes and onion volcano. And of course, let me flip food into your mouth you silly American. Typical hibachi choice of chicken, meat or fish and steamed or fried rice which was decent. Let's move on to the waitress. One of the worst experiences I've ever had with a waiter/waitress. Her timing was just awful. Would ask if I needed a refill just as a forkful of food entered my mouth. She would also clear off plates as a forkful of food was being raised to someone else's. She then brought the check out to us, some were still eating and said "No rush. Whenever you guys are ready." After about 3 minutes she came back and looked at the bill for a minute and saw that it didn't move from the spot she put it in. Hahaha We all felt rushed after she did it a second time and a little uncomfortable too. Not a good overall experience. For this place being given 4 out of 5 stars, I was disappointed. I didn't seen the bill so I could not get the waitresses name, but if you see a female who is tall-ish with glasses, big manly hands and fake blonde then run away. In fact, just don't eat here. There are plenty of other hibachi places around with the same typical food options and basic show at the same or slightly better pricing. Well, at least I tried it. read more

Visited for dinner a while back and searched through Yelp to discover this place initially. More of a 3.5 to me - compared with many of the hibachi/Japanese steakhouse that I have tried. Service was quite slow. Food-wise, main entree was good. I had filet mignon and scallop. My companion had salmon. Delicious and fresh ingredients. Scallop was bouncy. Shrimp was really well done (and fresh as well). Nicely prepared and cooked. Yum yum sauce was always a great option and made the food tastier. But everything else was somehow weak to my standard - the noodles, veggies, and the fried cheesecake dessert that we ordered. We didn't get fried rice, I believe it's not included. Noodles was just really plain and got soggy quickly. Fried cheesecake was really sugary to me personally. It may be good for the first few bites but definitely not much more than that. Pricing point is higher for dinner as always but I heard lunch is otherwise so maybe try lunch first if you can. For around Ohio area, I recommend Wasabi Japanese Steakhouse instead - although it's at Beachwood near Cleveland so may not be the closest... read more

The first thing you notice outside is that it looks abandoned. There are weeds, trash etc. The inside does not look much better. They apparently were very short staffed. of our party ordered his steak very rare. The cook apparently didn't understand. When I pointed it out to him, the cook took the well done steak off the grill, served it to him and said I am sure this will be fine. Then there was confusion about the bill. They kept thinking that one of us had not paid. Three times we had to explain to them that we had paid and how we did it (cash). Also the food was not very good. Strange that they serve noodles AND rice. They don't have been sprouts. The soup was good though. I would not go here again. read more

my friend and i brought our other friend to dinner here tonight because we rave about this place all the time because it is so so good, but we unfortunately had the most disappointing experience here tonight. our rice was beyond undercooked(it was very crunchy and getting stuck in our teeth)our veggies were burnt, our noodles(which are usually our favorite) had no flavor and were dry, and my steak that I ordered medium rare had zero pink in it, and even the people at our table we weren't there with agreed that these were all common issues with everyone's meal. I (as kindly as it possibly is to tell someone their food isn't great) expressed to the waitress the issues were having and she was awesome by the way! the owner of the restaurant came out shortly after and was honestly so rude I was almost speechless. She persisted that the food was fine and just kept vouching that the chef had been there for 10 years and he was their best one. We weren't trying to take any credit away from the capabilities of our chef as I'm sure he is usually great, simply that tonight, our $30 meals tasted awful to be blunt. She did give us a discount which was very much appreciated but I honestly just wanted to enjoy my meal. This is a place we would love to continue to eat but am just so disappointed to discover that the ownership was so quick to be rude and defensive. even said word for word "I'm doing you a favor" when she discounted half of my meal that I took 3 bites of and was already half the normal size it usually is. I have gone here occassionaly since I was young. The preparation is cool and the food is legitimately a good deal, especially for lunch prices. It seems to be going a bit downhill, apparently there is a duck excrement in the walkway and one of the door handles are gone, but otherwise it is a great place to eat with family. read more

For the price and expected experience, I was disappointed. The staff were all very friendly and prompt, but the food was less than excellent. We sat at a hibachi grill & ordered chicken & salmon with fried rice. The chicken hibachi was overloaded with soy sauce & was over cooked to the point of some pieces being burned. The fried rice was also overloaded with soy sauce and was therefore very salty. The salmon was not overdone, but was actually slightly undercooked. For the price, I would certainly pass this place up and pay the same price for a nice meal elsewhere. 3 stars for staff, 2 for food. I will say if you're coming for the experience of hibachi, just be prepared to spend more $ than you should for mediocre food. read more

We've been numerous times, have never left a review but figured I would. This is exactly what you would expect a hibachi restaurant to be. Portions have been great every time I have been there, we always order double meat plates. I don't eat rice so I alway order double veggie. The chefs are great and their sushi is good too. If you're looking for hibachi how it should be, I always want to eat here when we're on this side of town. It's not Amazing but it's decent! We will be back again and again. read more

We felt it was our duty to warn everyone about what we experienced tonight at Daruma Japanese Steakhouse. It's my oldest sons 24th birthday and he wanted to get his favorite, hibachi. We normally always go to the House of Japan at Tuttle but my middle son suggested a place closer by that he and his dad have enjoyed in the past, Daruma at Mill Run. We were "greeted" by a not very happy, or friendly young girl after standing at the front door for what felt like too long seeing how they weren't busy at all. She abruptly ushered us to our hibachi table and as we were about to sit, 3 out of the 5 of us immediately noticed the COCKROACH just chillin on the perfectly folded napkin at one of the place settings!!! We all stood there in shock as I quickly pointed it out to her. She looks at it, grabs it up and swiftly walked away. No words of apology, no explanation (not that there is any) no shock whatsoever, as if this wasn't the first time she's dealt with this! We actually stood there for several minutes before leaving totally dumbfounded. Never did they say a word to us and as we were walking out we saw the hostess talking to a chef in the far corner and looking at us as we walked out. Still no words of apology! So let's get one thing straight: this is hibachi, and every stereotype holds true here. And call me white trash, but I love hibachi places. Not every day--but a couple times of year is perfect. Daruma is the highest rated Japanese steakhouse in Columbus, and I can't disagree with that. For the most part, I've been pretty disappointed with these places so far in Cbus, but not anymore! The front of house--in particular, the hostesses and reservations--is a bit of a hot mess. I may be wrong, but I think they're the owner's kids. They're very sweet, and no disrespect to these young ladies--but this was definitely the standout for an otherwise great experience. I've read about similar snafus here, so I don't think it was just me. Do yourself a favor, and if you don't care about the chef's show, then ask to sit on the other side of the restaurant. I definitely felt like we got more personalized attention, and we might have even gotten our meals quicker than normal. Our server was incredibly cute, and although he seemed a bit new, he did a fantastic job. He was kind, attentive, and quickly got anything we needed. We ordered hibachi and a couple of sushi rolls. The rolls were bright and fresh, and the hibachi was a home run too. The filet was especially delicious--cooked perfectly and smooth as butter. The yum yum was the best I've had in the city. We both ordered cocktails to drink, and they were made well and were strong... a Manhattan for the Mister, and a G&T for me. Prices were on point with similar spots, so nothing noteworthy there. If you're like me and haven't quite found a Japanese steakhouse that you love, then give Daruma a try. I think you love it too. read more

Best habachi place I've tried in the Columbus area in the last three years! (Only a handful that I haven't made it to yet...) Service was amazing. Our chef was talented and funny. He had some tricks up his sleeve that we'd never seen before and even tried to show the kids how to do some of them. You know how some habachi spots are not on the same quality page with their sushi? NOT the case here - they are on point with fresh, tasty sushi options! The food was delish - I wouldn't mind making the trek from Gahanna to Hilliard again for it! read more

My husband and I decided to come here for our anniversary. He loves hibachi and I love sushi so it was a win for both of us. We arrived as soon as they opened for dinner hours on a Thursday. There was no wait and they actually started dinner before the table was full. The interior of the restaurant was very nice. I would have liked to sit on the other side if we weren't getting hibachi. I will probably do that next time since they have some pretty good happy hour specials. I wanted to try both hibachi and sushi so I went with the hibachi vegetable special with fried tofu and a spicy tuna roll. Everything was great! The spicy tuna was not too dry and had a decent amount of spice. The tofu and hibachi tasted pretty typical. Maybe a little more flavor than some of the other hibachi places I've been too. The portions were pretty big as well. I had tons of leftovers. Since we had a great time here I will definitely be back. I look forward to trying different items on the menu. read more

In my homwtown of Jacksonville, there is a great Japanese steak house named Daruma. It is the place by which I set the standard for all other Japanese steak houses. Sadly, in Columbus, all have fallen very, very short of my expectations. Until Daruma in Hillard. My party of two came here on Christmas Eve, after we were ditched by friends for dinner. When we arrived, we found the place filled with people waiting for a seat at the hibatchi tables. They were crowded around the walls while the dining room (the space sans hibatchi grills) sat completely empty. We immediately asked if we could sit at one of these tables - not because we thought we'd get our food any faster but because we didn't relish the idea of being forced to make new friends around the table as we watched a chef fling his cutlery for our entertainment. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy that too... but sometimes, I just want to eat and chat - not watch walls of flames as I eat. I love that Daruma has this open. Our server, Jimmy, was a delight and very friendly. We found the drink menu overloaded with sweet cocktails, so we ordered two off-menu items, a gin & tonic and a manhattan. Both were well put together and delish. We ordered 2 sushi rolls, a tempura shrimp roll & creamy california roll. The creamy california didn't have a description, so we didn't know what to expect. When they arrived, we did find that it had masago (caviar) on top - something neither of us were pleased about. I'll not that for the future. I ordered steak and shrimp from the hibatchi. The salad that comes with it was good, but I prefer ginger dressing. The steak was cooked to perfection... tasty and tender. The shrimp likewise was perfect. The veggies were good, not enough "meaty" veggies for my taste (more zucchini and mushrooms). The sauces are often a feature of a Japanese restaurant and they can ruin a good meal with a sauce that is just not good. This has been my struggle in Ohio. Well, at Daruma I found a hit. While the ginger sauce was pretty good (would have been better on my salad) the yum yum sauce was the best I've had. All in all, Daruma was a great place to spend Christmas Eve! If you want the "show", go and sit and enjoy. If you don't... hit the tables and have a nice intimate dinner where you can still enjoy great food. I'll be back! read more

I've been to Daruma twice, I have also been to other Japenese Steakhouses in the CBus area. But, this thing is something else. First thing - I am vegetarian, been so the whole life. These folks are always accommodating. I try to go with a group of others like me so we get the whole table. Contrary to the word Steak - they are very accommodating. They give us a special table, give us a tofu on the grill, no eggs, and make it with Jalepenos, sarachi. Make it spicy enough for us Indians. KUDOS to our chef for two times Chao awesome artist. BTW - the service is so good that I felt like I owe it to them to write a review. For years and years I've been troller. I thank you Daruma for breaking my silence to write a review! Definitely a fan. Honestly, if you've been to one Japanese hibachi steakhouse you've been to most of them. But there are little things that can make or break the experience. The evening started on a sour note--I made our reservation through the Yelp website and received both email and IM confirmations and reminders. However, when we showed up at the restaurant they did not have our reservation. One of the hostesses commented that ours was not the first Yelp reservation that was lost in the ether of the internet. Perhaps some fine tuning of the Yelp Reservations system is in order. As it happened, the restaurant was not that busy at the time we arrived so we were seated with minimal wait. Although my wife and I were left waiting for a couple of minutes at the hostess station smiling awkwardly at one of the hostesses. After staring at each other for a good 90 seconds, I asked, "What is happening now?" And the hostess replied, "We're seating you." Not really rude, but just a strange interaction. From that point on, our experience was top notch. Our waitress and servers were all attentive and courteous. Our drinks were very good. My wife had some sort of raspberry, vodka thing. I had a chocolate martini for no apparent reason. Perhaps I thought it was the year 2000 and I was trying to relive my midtwenties. Mildly embarrassing in retrospect, but seven years and two kids into my life as a middle aged married guy I really have nobody to try to impress. Plus, if you can't have a ridiculous cocktail in front of your wife and 6 other strangers, where can you have one? Our chef, definitely the most important part of the Japanese steakhouse experience, clearly had skills. Our orders were prepared perfectly (filet and scallops for me and filet and chicken for my wife), though it is always alarming to see how much butter is involved in making your dinner. And, of course, the Yum Yum Sauce continues its roll as the crack of the Japanese steakhouse dinner. I'll be darned if I didn't eat an entire serving of that stuff with my dinner. Yum Yum Sauce all of the things! So despite an initial off note (that can easily be fixed), I think we'll be coming back again. We'll just call ahead (like in the days of my midtwenties) to make our reservation. read more

The food here is pretty solid (really good hibachi for Columbus, although more of a 3.5 star if you really think about it), but I'm rounding up my rating because I was thoroughly impressed with their service. Our waitress was a bit slow and ditzy, but our interactions with the manager (unrelated to our server or the food quality) left a great impression on me. Backstory - we'd originally made a reservation to come in on a Tuesday night for dinner, but when we arrived, we found a sign that said the restaurant was closed due to a busted pipe. We were pretty miffed that we hadn't received any notification, but I'd bought a Groupon for this place and was intent on actually using it, so we made another reservation for Thursday night. For the price you pay, you do get a good amount of food (I ended up splitting the Filet Mignon, Scallop, and Shrimp special with my friend), and let me say that they really do know how to put on a show while cooking everything! That entertainment alone made me pretty happy that I decided to still give this place a chance, but I was completely sold when the manager came over and asked me if I'd originally made a reservation on Tuesday. When I confirmed that we had, she profusely apologized for the unexpected cancellation and closing of the restaurant, and promptly offered us free drinks/dessert on the house. That moment really stood out to me because not only did she offer, unsolicited, to compensate for an unfortunate incident that was out of her control, but she even took the time to actually look back at whose dinner plans were disturbed and seek us out to try to make it up to us. Speaking of dessert - shameless plug for their tempura cheesecake! Normally, I automatically zero in on the tempura ice cream, but I'd never heard of someone applying the same idea to cheesecake (and I do love cheesecake...) so I figured "hey, it's free - might as well!" BEST IDEA OF THE NIGHT. I'm not even sure how it turned out so good, but the cheesecake just melts in your mouth and the tempura perfectly compliments that nice, soft, creamy texture. Furthermore, you get the added benefit of not having it melting on you after 3 minutes, which tends to happen with the ice cream. Highly recommend, it's a fun experience whether you go with a date, family, or friends, and their service is amazing. Be sure to make a reservation, because you'll probably not get seating otherwise, and you will have to wait a bit after you get there even with the reservation, but they have tables and a bar waiting area where you can sit, relax, and have a drink to prepare yourself for an exciting performance. read more
