If you love your MG do not take it to Darrin. From the get-go his rebuild of my '68 B engine was a disaster. The leaking thermostat housing stud (who doesn't know they intrude into the water jacket and need sealant on the threads?). The globs of hard Permatex sealant around the inside of the core plugs, now disappeared into the small passages of my aluminum radiator, I suppose. The leaking head gasket after 500 miles. Darrin's solution, add K-Seal. The knocking after 2000 miles? Darrin told me he did not want my car in his shop, no room or time. Then stopped answering my calls and emails. After I sicced the BAR on him he first offered a complete rebuild but then reneged. Then offered a fraction of what I had paid. I took it. Okay! This review is one year long overdue I don't own an MG, but do own a Triumph GT6 which is a British car. My car starting acting up as I would drive it for 10 minutes to only stop and behave as it didn't have any fuel and would not re-start. After trying to fix it myself, and looking around for experts that work on Triumph's cars and not having much luck I found Darrin. Although his shop was closed on weekends, Darrin worked with me and had somebody meet me at his shop. 5 Days later my car was ready and working like a new! It turned out to a clogged fuel line that was replaced. Not only did Darrin fixed the Fuel line, but he also timed and adjusted the carbs. Since I don't drive my car as much I have not needed any work done to it, but you can bet that when the car needs service again Darrin will be first call. If you own a Triumph, give Darrin a call. I have been to Darrin's garage twice now. First when I purchased (over the internet, w/ a paid inspection) my '69 MG. I wanted to be sure everything was on the up and up with lubricants and fluids and such. He serviced it, told me that I should be happy with my purchase because it really was in great shape. Over this past weekend, it spewed coolant after parking it. I couldn't figure out where or why it was happening. After inspection, it turned out to be the connection tube to the water pump. After a few clamps, new tube, and labor I was out less than $100. In my eyes, both of these were opportunities to tell an obviously "wet behind the ears" new owner of a classic anything he wanted to. After Mike Goodman closed his shop I went looking for a new mechanic for my 1973 B. My overdrive had gone out. I found Darrin, who did the clutch and sent the overdrive off to some guy he knows who can reline the friction material. It has worked fine since. When I was in high school my sister's boyfriend had an old MG that he used to work on in our driveway every weekend. It was old, I wasn't sure of the year but it had a crank to start it in the back. He was a real car geek and used to go to MG shows in Hershey PA where they had swap meets where you could buy MG parts from fellow enthusiasts. As the guy lost interest in the car and my sister and he broke up, he left the MG in my Dad's garage and it sat there for nearly 30 years!! A couple of years ago I decided to move to California and I thought it would be great with the weather being so nice here to take the car from my Dad's house in NJ and ship it with all of my stuff to CA. You can drive an old car out here easily because there's no rain or snow, the weather is always great. I knew in LA it was easy to find people to work on all sorts of exotic cars so I Google searched MG specialist and MG fix and tons of results came back for Darrin's MG in Chatsworth. I called and got Darrin himself on the phone and after telling him what I thought I had, he said I probably had an MG TC and he made me feel super comfortable from the start with all his knowledge. I had the car flat beaded to him and he called me shortly after receiving it. He was super excited; he said it was a very old model and it was in great condition but it would take some real TLC and $$ to get it going after sitting for so many years. It turned out to be a 1950 MG TC. Darrin is truly an MG savant, he knows everything about MGs and can restore or repair any of them from any year or model. Time for the SMOG test ( after the car was in storage for 3 months...) , and per Darrin's suggestion I drove the little Midget from Palm Springs to Chatsworth ( was not sure how I felt about freeway driving but it was fun!). The diagnosis from a shop in Palm Springs was " Do these things for $1450 and no guarantee it will pass smog test". Darrin said " drive it to me, I will adjust the carburetor , take it to smog center , and have you back on the road by 2 pm for half the price you were quoted in Palm Springs". True to his word - passed smog test, had a mini tune up, paid less than half the original Palm Springs quote....definitely worth the drive! read more
