Final Thoughts: 4.20/5.0 Asian fusion brunch spots seem hard to come by around the San Jose area. There's more within the larger Bay Area space that I never really go to. My sister and I decided to divert from our original plans today and just go on a brunch date elsewhere. This is also a spot that's been on my list for the longest time and I'm only now just getting to it. Relaxing Saturday brunch day. Thinking it will be a 4 stars for me for this experience. Food: Darla's Benedict: 4.0/5 This is the classic eggs benedict. It comes with two medium poached eggs on rustic Millstone bread. On top, it will include candied bacon, tomatoes, yuzu hollandaise sauce with the side of crispy kale. The poached egg was done nicely. You can see in the video that the yolk is super runny and cooked perfectly. The bread is quite thick and does have that crispy edge on the crust. Personally, I hate tomatoes. They do put a few thin slices on it, so it wasn't enough to fully affect the taste. I did give those pieces of tomatoes away to my sister though. The yuzu hollandaise sauce is very thick and umami. The yuzu is a little overpowering for me with the acidity, but overall, there is this nice freshness to it. The candied bacon is super crispy and I really like the saltiness and sweetness to it. For the vegetable component, they provide crispy kale. Personally, I would have preferred a side of fries/potatoes/hash, fresh fruit, or something more fresh even like a side salad. The kale is nice and crispy, but it's so oily and I feel that took away more from the dish than contributed. Loco Moco No.1: 4.0/5 This is their steak river farm wagyu beef patty, grilled asparagus, picked cherry peppers, a fried egg, pomegranate, rice, parmesan mushroom, and ginger gravy. The beef patty was super tender and juicy. I wish there were more of the gravy or even if the gravy were poured over the beef. I feel like it just soaks all of it in. The gravy was super thick and umami. The ginger is very light and virtually not there almost, so I didn't realize it was there. Not a concern for me as that flavor can be overpowering. Rice leans on the dryer side for me. Definitely a preference as I'm sure others would be fine with that. For the vegetable component, I would prefer an alternative. Perhaps a fresh vegetable or side salad would work better or more mushrooms for that umami, or even a pickled veggie for that crunch. The asparagus looks nice and leans more on fine dining, but it's not significant enough to give that light and freshness to it. The flavor of it works well though. Egg was nicely cooked and had a beautiful yolk color. --------- Quality: Made to order Food was freshly made and everything came out hot to order. The kale was super crispy and like it was just fried in that oil. The loco moco was also super juicy and piping hot like it was made to order. Our plates were all nicely completed and brought out quickly it seems. Price: $$$ Their prices do lean on the higher side for a brunch. Usual prices will be around $17 to $26 with a few outliers. The Loco Moco was one of the outliers pricing at $33 for a plate. This is likely related to the beef patty. I can't say I would pay $33 for that plate. Given the form of the meat patty, I really couldn't tell the cut of the beef. Perhaps it is Wagyu, but its difficult for me to tell. Very juicy overall though. Of note, the portion sizes are smaller. They are plated on larger plates and gives more fine dining vibes, so matches the pricing. Service: Nice experience For being outside, there was still enough waiters/waitresses working, so it was fairly simple to get someone's attention to help us. They were very nice and checked in on us, which is always a plus. Very simple process and good experience with them overall. Ambiance: Shaded Outdoors and Indoors We decided to sit outdoors today given their shaded area. This was one of the highlights for me. Initially, I preferred indoor given the weather, but my sister asked if it was a shaded outdoors. It is and that's what makes it. The air felt really nice. There are pockets of sun that peak through the trees and shade, but that wasn't really a concern. Would definitely go here on another brunch date. Location/Parking: Public Parking Available This location is within downtown Saratoga area. I will say that getting in a out of here isn't the most idea, especially on a weekend where everyone wasn't to go out and spend the most of their day off. Do not sit outside here unless you want bugs falling from the trees onto your food. A nasty tree maggot, big ants, and leaves kept falling from the trees onto our food and table. It does not help that the outdoor seating is under a tree with no sort of ceiling. We went here to celebrate a friend's birthday and didn't realize there was a car show on the block that day. Upon arrival, it was pretty empty inside, but they still placed us outside. At first, they said the table in the shade was reserved and was going to sit us under the direct sun. I asked if we could be seated inside on a 4-top and just bring an extra chair because there was so much empty tables. They did not reply but then we asked again to sit in the shade at the "already reserved" table and they ended up saying yes. It was a bad start already but then our food took 40 mins to come. Found this lovely place on Yelp when I was searching for a breakfast place near Hakone Gardens. We were welcomed in as the first customers of the morning, server was very friendly and accommodating. The menu is American Asian fusion, and their duck confit and waffle breakfast was absolutely delicious! For a group of eight, we ordered all different breakfast plates, and we finished them without anything leftover. Food was so flavorful and I loved the unique fusion of menu items. With so many interesting options on the menu, our party shared a couple plates: Loco Moco 1: Wagyu beef patty was nice and tender Loco Moco 2: I preferred this version with the Karaage Ricotta Pancakes: initially drawn to this because of the Yuzu glaze! First time at Darla and I have mixed feelings. The food was great, which is what originally drew me in -- the menu is pretty creative. My favorite dish was the duck confit curry: crispy skin, tender meat, and a perfectly spiced sauce. The Khao Soi was also really good and beautifully plated, though the ribs in it were a bit chewy. We also had the tom yum paella, which everyone at the table enjoyed. I tried the lychee cocktail, but it was missing the signature cotton candy topping -- apparently, they had run out. I had originally wanted the lamb shank curry, but they were out of that too. As for ambiance and service -- that's where things were less smooth. Service was slow across the board. Our server kept disappearing, and everything from ordering to paying took long. The restaurant wasn't busy, and we were not in any rush, but the delays were confusing. After reading other reviews, it sounds like this is the norm We were first seated outside, but a large (and beautiful) tree in the center of the patio kept dropping twigs on us, so we asked to move inside. The indoor space was freezing with the AC blasting -- a bit uncomfortable for me. They also offer live jazz shows, which cost about $20 extra per person if you want to sit on the performance side. The blueberry syrup was good but the matcha itself was lacking. Definitely tasted grassier than matcha usually is and bitter. Darla Cafe, an about to be 3 years old international food spot with lots of American and Asian sprinkles that is from 3 San Francisco friends, is located on Saratoga's Big Basin and 5th. Of course, elementary me would so think of "The Little Rascals", but I'll stop there. One of my sisters brought the place up, and we took our mom and the dog after having a debate on what food place we should hit up for brunch. At least this spot is closer to the house than the other spot she brought up. With the simple look, adorable and hospitable staff members and a noteworthy tree outside along with a bigger list of choices than the other spot, I figured that this would be a solid choice. Well, it is. Kind of. The parts the place did right? It has a lot countries covered, and the place is so creative as a result. I was hoping to try the yuzu pancakes, but them being out tells me the dish is really popular. So, I got the berries and cream cheese pancakes instead. What other parts do I remember? The place has a strong Thai presence, as besides the iced tea, there are the coffee, the yoklor, and the porridge, jok. I also remember their version of the espresso martini and other drinks having soju as their base instead of gin or their usual base. Though I find the idea interesting, I'm a food and traditionalist at the end of the day, especially since Martinez is over an hour away. Since it felt weird having lychee Italian soda or any other flavor for a clockwork day for me, I just got an iced match latte instead. The parts the place got wrong? Right off the bat, one star needs to be deducted because the place does the rest of the Japanese elements absolutely wrong by making their karaage dishes spicy. For people like me that have known Japanese food long enough to the point that it's my favorite type of food after Bay Area style (local style) and Filipino, the statement is absolutely horrible. Future restaurants that want to add Japanese food to your menu, stop making your Japanese food spicy because that's the quickest way to prevent yourself from getting a perfect score from me! Besides that? While we're on the subject of hot sauces and spicy foods, I recall seeing Tabasco's and I believe some Mexican hot sauce (Tapa probably), but not a coordinated sauce or hot source like bottles or containers of Japanese or Thai peppers. People bring up the issue of the service being slow. While this is true, whether or not they also work on orders for food delivery services at a high volume, I don't know. Oh, and I can't forget how I wish the place would allow me to order just 1 egg like at the various Nation spots. Darla's a mixed bag. While the place is slick like Alfalfa's hair quirk because of traits such as the hospitable staff and the amount of nations covered, the place doesn't elevate itself enough due to being flat out bad for Japanese food and coordination issues. Whether or not the place will complete a 4th year, I don't know, but now's the time for the restaurant to solidify itself. This the second time we've been here and it really hits the spot. While some of the menu items aren't your typical brunch place, either way, the food is all really good. The chicken karage was really good - chicken was juicy and well breaded. I felt the outside of the waffle could have been a little crispier, but it went well with the sryup, I loved their homemade marmelade. I brought half of the waffle home and it toasted up quite nicely. Darla's burger was so delicious, but so hard to eat. I could barely get a whole bite in my mouth. It was also a bit juicy runny, so the bun integrity got lost rather quickly, but it was still very satisfying. We at first thought we could survive off the side salad, but opted to order a side of fries too. Nicely crisp and well seasoned, you just can't eat a burger without fries. Service was pleasant enough, but they didn't come by to check on us too often. But any time we flagged down someone for some hot water or extra sauce, they were quick to come by and bring it back as well. read more

A friend recommended this brunch spot to me. We came the day before 4th of July and surprisingly it was not busy since they just opened. The weather was nice so we sat outside. The patio is built around a huge tree which was so cool. I wasn't too hungry so I only ordered 2 sunny side up eggs and the yok lor ice coffee. Eggs was basic, can't complain. The yok lor ice coffee was a bit sweet even though I asked for less sweet and was too milky. My boyfriend ordered the Darla's burger (available after 11am but they nicely accommodated us 15 mins before 11). Burger was actually really good and juicy. He also ordered a Michelada which we do not recommend because it does not taste like a Michelada at all. He asked for modelo but they gave with Stella beer and it was so watered down. A really sad excuse for a Michelada. They did however not charge us for it since we ordered another beer instead. Overall, I'd say for the price of the dishes it's just okay. This is one of my favorite brunch places! They offer dishes that not a lot of other places do and I love that they have a seasonal menu. I didn't have any trouble getting a table for brunch but I'm not sure how busy it gets for dinner. I got the shakshouka was much more filling than I thought it was going to be. It was delicious nonetheless. Everything tasted great and came out beautifully. I would love to come for dinner when they do their live jazz music. Located in Downtown Saratoga, parking is plentiful and easy to find. The interior is well recorded and there's a good selection of seating. Noise level is quiet but can get quite noisy presumably during peak hours. Darla's scramble (4/5): so yummy. The egg texture was soft and fluffy. The candied bacon was so delicious. The flavor really pulled the scramble flavor together. The cheese added a weird taste though so not sure what was up with that. The flavor could use some more too, but nothing a little ketchup and hot sauce couldn't fix. Overall, Darla Cafe is a great breakfast restaurant. The food is yummy but a bit pricey. I came here on a Tuesday in July for brunch, 40 minutes before closing. People were leaving so I almost had the place all to myself which meant great service: my raspberry lemonade and karaage loco moco came out fast and the waitress was very attentive. The bees also came out fast when my food arrived despite the electric fan so I moved from the patio to inside to enjoy my food. It's a cute cafe with good Asian fusion brunch food. I'd come back. Darla cafe was a charming dinner spot with great service and delicious food and drinks. Our server was sweet and smiling, the food was excellent quality with unique flavor-profiles and good vegan/vegetarian options for the two of us. The spring rolls were beautiful and fresh and came with a tasty dipping sauce. The cocktails were so good we each had two and I would have bought a pint of the coconut pineapple panna cotta to go if I could! I understand why some people rated lower due to service. Came here on a weekend and it seemed like they were under staffed. We did have to wait a while before we got seated but I think it is because we came at a busy time. Once we sat down we did not have to wait too long. The staff here are quite nice and friendly! Got the star scramble and the sunrise scramble with truffle potato's and wow it was delicious! The potato's were crispy but light. The omelets were fluffy and hearty. And the bread the comes with the dish was absolutely delicious! Different taste than I imagined in a good way! Did not expect that. Also orders side of fries and wow, really good fries. Very crunchy and very light. I also love the decor here. It is clean, simple and modern. Despite the long wait, I would come back again! read more

Had to do another review of their dinner. The first one I did covered their Brunch - in which I've been here several times for brunch with friends - so I'll add some review on those occasions as well. But for the dinner! We celebrated my bday here and I'm SO GLAD we did - Darla Cafe is truly a HIDDEN GEM! I don't think people realize how good the food is and it's so unassuming and quaint - very different than what's across the street (which I have been to as well). First we started with the crispy calamari - and they did NOT disappoint!! Crispy and with two dipping sauces and plenty of it! Sometimes the appetizer is just a few bits but this was a great starter for the four of us!! We also got the Lots of Crab Spaghetti and they KID NOT! There is a TON of fresh crab chunks! And overall servings are pretty large - was a huge hit!! If you like crab and pasta - this is the go to!! The other dish that was a hit was the Lobster Pad Thai - not only do you get a good size lobster tail but the pad thai had huge prawns on top. AND the flavor bomb. SO MUCH FLAVOR! This was a huge hit with my kid. We fought for the last bite which I got cause.... it's my bday!! Whoo hoo! :) There's SO MUCH on the menu we wanted to order but we ended up settling on the Pineapple Boat - which had the most AMAZING fish with crunchy cashews and veggies! Again - everything here is a flavor bomb and I think this one was MY favorite... I love tamarind so it totally hit the spot. We decided we needed our veggies and got the pumpkin salad. My oldest loved this one - if you like Kobacha - you would love this salad - so much texture and flavors - with a nice truffle glaze on top. And of course we had to end with the Lava cake for my bday. A nice way to end our very filling, flavor bomb, innovative, delicious, and memorable bday meal!! Really quick - I did say I also went with friends for brunch - and we got the salmon benedict, florentine benedict, pancakes, sunrise scramble and loco moco 2 (with karaage chicken) and I will say - they did NOT disappoint and my friends now have a new favorite place to come to as well!! You HAVE to come for both breakfast/lunch/dinner... each time - there's so much to choose from and it'll never disappoint. Service is always friendly and I have to say - with my friends - we sat there for hours and they kept filling our water and coffee... never felt rushed. And they played nice background music. After seeing many positive reviews, I decided to come here for the lunch experience. It was a bit disappointing and I do not plan to return here. The menu was very limited in options compared to the dinner menu. Food / Drink Karaage + Waffles Jok Koong (rice porridge) with Chinese Donuts Pumpkin Spice Latte The chicken karaage pieces were lightly coated and battered. The waffle wasn't crispy and was soft with every bite. The spicy yuzu mayo and syrup were perfect additions to the dish. The Jok Koong (rice porridge) with Chinese Donuts had slices of ginger, earwood mushrooms, shrimp, and soy sauce. It wasn't even piping hot when it was served - it felt as though the dish was sitting around for a while. Based on other Yelp photos, it was not as thick as I expected it would be. The Chinese donuts were light and crispy. For the price point, you can definitely find this dish much cheaper in San Jose. The pumpkin spice latte was served warm and had a very light and subtle hint of pumpkin. Service It was very lackluster customer service from the beginning to the end of the dining experience. Minus 3 stars for customer service. Upon being seated, the host didn't bother to provide menus for my party or inform us that our server would be would be over shortly for our dining experience. I had to ask for menus to be provided and repeatedly ask for utensils, napkins, and a water refill. This is something I would expect from a hole in the wall Asian restaurant, not in Los Gatos. I asked the server if the restaurant did anything special for birthday celebrations and was advised that a candle and ice cream would be provided. The server didn't even bother to bring it out or follow up. The server said that I should order now since there was a big party arriving and would take quite some time for the food to come out if my party waited. Interestingly, there wasn't a big party. There were plenty of empty indoor and outdoor tables. Ambiance Modern wooden tables and matching chairs. There were small artificial floral vase arrangements and mini pumpkin pails on the table. The bar wall was mirrored and seemed a bit outdated. Parking / Location It is right across the street from the Flowers Saratoga restaurant. We've been here 3-4 times. The food is always very good which is why we have been back. Tonight was our first time here for dinner (brunch the other times) and unfortunately it was Mother's Day dinner. Again, the food was good, and we were really here for the band which was also good. The service has always been horrendously slow... tonight even worse than before (with the restaurant at about 30% capacity at best) it took 1hr to get a beer and summer rolls... the rest took almost as long. There was this disgusting dead/moldy flower on the table (see attached pic). If you can't keep the flowers fresh, don't put them out! We asked what they recommend for our 8 year old and the first thing they mentioned was the $40 lobster pad Thai... give me a break! Needless to say we didn't order that. And the drink menu is horrendous. In this area people know wine, and the wine options were so bad we went for beer. They have a reasonable beer selection but were out of most of the beers. Since you have to pay for a seat for the music, this dinner for 3 was over $300 and an 18% gratuity was automatically included... we would have gone much lower if we had a choice because the service was so bad. Such a bad experience that we won't be back. I don't expect this place to be around much longer. read more
