I placed my order at the front of the restaurant and was prepared for a wait, since I had come in at a "shoulder" time - way after lunch but before dinner. Dao Thai is a small, unassuming, cozy restaurant that is almost hidden along Ohio street. I've walked by it countless times and I finally decided today to stop by and try out their food since I was craving thai food. As a vegetarian, thai restaurants tend to be hit or miss. I've had too many experiences where I've found out that every single item on the menu contains meat or a fish product, effectively barring me from ever going to the restaurant. Dao Thai was a refreshing change of pace - there were quite a few options available that could be made vegetarian friendly. I ultimately ended up ordering the Mussaman curry without pineapples and it hit the spot. The food was brought out without much wait and was at the perfect temperature. The curry was incredibly flavorful and filling. For those that enjoy spicier foods, I would recommend requesting a little extra spice for this dish because it was on the milder end of the heat spectrum. I have ordered from here many times but in my latest order, I ordered the following items: chicken Pad Ped (Red Hot Curry chicken)- The chicken curry had a good balance of coconut milk to curry flavor. The chicken was well cooked. The spice mix used in the curry could use improvement in flavor. A sense of "thainess" was missing from the flavor. It was a good dish nonetheless. Pad Khee Mao (Spicy Crazy Noodles)- These were flat noodles with a mix of veggies, chicken and Shrimp. What made them spicy was jalapenos. In thai cooking, I expect the use of thai peppers. Although the environment was a bit awkward (lack of customers and everything echo'd), the service was decent. I ordered the Massaman curry and it was good. However, I tried my friend's Singaporean noodles and it was absolute garbage. Then again, who orders Singaporean noodles at a Thai place? So I cannot give the restaurant too much flack for having bad Singaporean noodles. However, I ordered a Thai tea and I know you're supposed to mix it, but I prefer to not mix it. I was really craving some Thai iced tea so I ended up ordering a little Thai dinner from here and everything was alright! Not bad, not great. I ended up ordering a Thai iced tea bubble tea and the Pad See Eiw with tofu for delivery. It arrived quickly and correctly which was great. The bubble tea really hit the spot and it wasn't too sweet or too full of ice (the ice was blended into the drink like a slush which was pleasant). The boba pearls seemed a bit soggy but nothing too bad. You kind of get what you pay for - it's on the cheaper end of bubble teas in the area so it wasn't anything special. The Pad See Eiw was kind of disappointing- it was just totally lackluster. I found the Chinese broccoli to be quite bitter so I ended up picking most of it out so I wished there were more veggies included overall. The tofu also wasn't my favorite as it seems to have been marinated in something sour so it added a slightly strange flavor to the entire meal, but it didn't taste bad. The sauce was a mix between sweet and savory with a forward garlicky taste, but a bit too sweet for me. All in all, it was a filling, fairly cheap Thai dinner so don't expect much more than that if you order from here but it still might be worth it if you aren't in the mood to cook or you're craving Thai. read more

Despite the fact they serve the BEST tom kha gai soup in town, I think we're going to jump ship after four years and look for another place to eat. Sadly, the quality of their food, like their customer service, is spiraling downhill. If the place looks busy -say, more than half full- the small wait staff completely melts down. We were surrounded by several groups of four and six tops last night, all anxiously waiting to place their drink and food orders - several simply got up and left after the unacceptably long waits. Customers started wandering up to the "bar" to order drinks because they couldn't flag down their waitresses. On two occasions, with half eaten plates of food still sitting in front of us, the servers tried to bring us other customer's orders. A huge tray of appetizers sat on an empty table next to us for more than ten minutes - eventually, the folks who ordered the now-cold food stumbled onto their orders as they searched the restaurant for their server. We were never offered refills of water or a second round of cocktails, and we had to go to the hostess stand to finally secure our check - which had an extra appetizer, a full entrée and large order of rice mistakenly added to the total. I should start this review by stating that I have been dinning at Dao Thai for a while now and it's a great friendly neighborhood place to eat. Perhaps this review is long overdue! They always accommodate; However tonight would be the FIRST time I decided to order home delivery versus dine in. I ordered one of my favorite "go-to" items on the menu - Pad See Eew Rice Noodles with Beef, extra egg & a side of dry chili seasoning (usually one of the condiments offered available on the table). My order came in about 35 minutes right to my door and it was predictably tasty and kept warm. My order had a nice amount of meat and veggies proportionally. Unfortunately the portion size overall seemed much smaller than when I dine in, they didn't add in the additional egg requested, and there was no side of dry chili seasoning. I know it might seem like a no biggie, but these little things add to my meal enjoyment. Besides, I was secretly hoping the delivery experience would measure up to be every bite as wonderful as when I eat at the restaurant, especially when I'm home enjoying my lazy Sunday. I decided to call to let them know just in case there was a misunderstanding and felt they would want to know of the portion being less than expected; but the person who answered the phone rudely informed me that things asked for as extra only come free for dine in, not an option on delivery. Don't get it twisted, the food is seriously really good and so reasonably priced. I'm still a fan and I would highly recommend you go have the full dine in experience. It's a charming place. In general their waitstaff is very attentive and quite knowledgeable about the menu. I simply wish they communicated this "extras policy" to me on the front end because I would have gladly paid for those "extras" (even though they've never charged extra for these when I dine in) fees as part of my order. To be clear, rudeness is the #1 reason why this review got docked one star for what would have been an easy five-star restaurant review. For the record, all meals previously for dine in were worthy of all five-stars! Soapbox: Restaurants need to remember that rudeness might cause loyal customers to rethink giving future business. My fiance and I occasionally order take-out from here whenever we are craving Thai food, and since there aren't many Thai places in this area of the city, Dao is our default. We usually call ahead, but even if we order take-out there, the wait has been around 15 minutes no matter what we order. That being said, the food is pretty good, the servings are large, and the prices (while a little high) are reasonable for the Streeterville area. The servers are generally pretty friendly and offer us waters while we wait for our take-out orders. Pad See Eiw ($10.50 with tofu): It's a pretty simple dish and is not the best I've ever had but is decent and flavorful. Kang Kheaw Wan/Green Curry ($10.25 with beef): I can't eat spicy foods but tried some and thought the flavor was pretty good. My fiance (the spicy food eater) liked it too. The entree does not come with rice so we'll usually make it at home since we are ordering to-go. Pad Khee Mao ($10.50 with beef): You can choose the spice level and my fiance orders medium. It's too spicy for me but I like to pick out the vegetables since there are more in this than my Pad See Eiw. Singapore Noodle ($10.75): I'm used to having this in Chinese restaurants so I'm not actually sure which is more "authentic" but the noodles are not as dry as I like.
