    Danny's fries with whiz
    Jamie B.

Wanted to try this place after hearing about it in the news. I imagine it was going to be busy so I called around an hour before picking up. Even though it was very busy the counter staff answered the phone politely and didn't rush. Upon arrival 1 hour later food was not ready yet but the place was packed. Staff remained very pleasant and polite. Ended up being about an hour and a half wait total. Did not eat at the restaurant but there are several tables and high top counter at one window. Some tables have outlets so you can charge your phone. This is an order at the counter place and not a full service restaurant. As far as the food. I order two whiz wit and two orders of Danny's fries with whiz. Once I got home only one fry had the cheese dip but that was ok I know they are just starting out and getting the hang of things. Now for the steaks: I wouldn't say it's the best cheese steak I have ever had but they weren't bad. The cheese is a little different was almost like a butter quality, I liked it but my husband wasn't a fan. Steak tasted good and was cooked well. They have other food choices as well if you are looking for something else besides a steak sandwich. There is street parking and several parking lots located near by. During my visit there was an event downtown and there was no parking anywhere so be mindful of that to prepare for your visit. Bottom line, good place to get steak sandwich in Syracuse NY. Be prepared, call ahead for your orders.

Cheesesteak with homemade cheese wiz and seasoned curly fries

Had to try this new restaurant in armory square. Went with friends on this Wednesday for lunch. It was busy with many people standing around. Ordered the standard cheesesteak and fries. The wait was 35 minutes but so worth it!! It was the best cheesesteak I've ever had!!! It was juicy and the homemade cheese wiz was amazing- I loved it!! The fries were seasoned and fried crisp. I will be back!!!

Whiz Wit Cheesesteak~ Shaved ribeye, caramelized onions, house-made Cheese Whiz sandwiched between in-house baked sesame roll

Danny's Steaks is located in historic Armory Square, downtown Syracuse. It is next door to the restaurant Kasai . Both are owned by Chef Kyle Mastropietro I ordered the Whiz Wit Cheesesteak ~Shaved ribeye, caramelized onions and house made Cheese Whiz. I am not normally a cheese wiz guy on my Philly steaks. I'm normally a provolone guy on my cheesesteaks but with my first order at Danny's Steaks and knowing that Chef Kyle is from Philly, I felt I needed to test out the popular Philly 'whiz wit' version! When ordering you have the option of your roll having sesame seeds. I enjoy the slight nuttiness that they add so I said yes. Danny's Steaks bake their cheesesteak rolls fresh on premise daily. I also ordered a side of Danny's Fries and beer battered onion rings. After placing my order I sat down and looked around. The restaurant has a handful of tables and is kept very clean. When I received my cheesesteak my first thought was "wholly cow this is huge!!!" I knew there was no way I was going to finish the whole thing and would be taking what was left home to enjoy at a later time (which I did!). When I deconstruct the pros and cons of a cheesesteak I normally think about the bread to meat ratio. Can the bread hold up to the moist meat all the way through to the last few bites? Well, the bread was perfectly baked. The roll had a chewy inside with a slight crisp (but not with messy flakes everywhere) outside and held up perfectly. The meat was not over cooked, had great flavor and just the right amount for the roll size. Like I said above, not a huge wiz guy because I feel like it sometimes overpowers the cheese steak, but I wanted to try give it a try. I'm glad I did. Was not overpowering at all and complimented the whole sandwich well. The curly fries were crisp and had house made spices sprinkled on top of them. The beer battered onion rings were just that - very tasty pub style onion rings. I left feeling very full and I took home around a quarter of what was left of the cheesesteak. This restaurant is a great addition to the downtown area and I see it being very popular with delivery services and to go orders. You can call in your order or order online. Is it truly an authentic Philly Cheesesteak? I don't have that much experience but I really enjoyed this meal. I'll take Danny's Steaks word for it and will definitely be back!

I called to order my food they said 25 minutes when I got there I had to wait another 10 to 15 minutes I mean the cashier was pretty busy taking other phone orders so they did seem busy but my order was not a difficult one I feel my food could have been done in a more timely fashion given there was not many people in the actually dining room waiting overall the food was pretty good but I wish my sandwich had more cheese added too it and wasn't on such a soft bread maybe like a Italian bread the meat was well seasoned with a nice pepperoni touch a delicious sandwich I'd buy again

We seek out places like this who hold them to a higher standard. (Usually the places that have "Cheesesteak" or "Philadelphia" in their names.) The litmus test is whether or not they offer whiz as an option. These were miles above the stuff you'd get from a non-Philly branded place in Syracuse, but on the lower end of the good tier. We would definitely ask for extra dressing/whiz on our next order, because they were disappointingly dry. It seemed like an oxymoron to order Whiz Wit and have it come out dry. With that said though, all the ingredients were amazing. The bread is light, pretty much a full on sub roll. The meat was tender and tasted legit. Nothing weird, stringy or clearly frozen. The Smokey Horseradish Dijon kind of got lost in the shuffle. Same meat as the philly, but the mild kick from the mustard didn't really match what a focus on cheese would have done. The chicken cordon bleu was solid. The minced chicken was actually pretty moist. We added cherry peppers, which took it to another level and I would now never go without. Minced chicken is hit or miss for me, but I rolled the dice for chicken cordon bleu and hit the jackpot. These guys aren't my favorite "authentic" Philly in Syracuse, but they hold down the north side just fine. I'd be happy to eat here any time, and the prices are pretty good as well.

My oldest son wanted to take me there for lunch one last time, since it was a favorite place of his. We showed up a few minutes after they opened and it was already busy. But, since it was their last day, I figured they would have a lot of customers who wanted one last sandwich. We ordered two of my son's favorites: Steak cheese and onion and fries. Let me say that both were excellent. I would easily order these again. The decor was eclectic, the music was Grateful Dead type stuff, and the beer selection was pretty amazing. It is a shame that they are closing. And sadly, it had to do with the owner of the property not renewing the lease. Why does everything have to be about money?

They even use Amoroso rolls straight from Philadelphia. Definitely worth a side quest if you're in the area or enroute to nearby Green Lakes State Park.

The first time I went was during the lunch rush, and honestly, it was amazing. Before I was even fully inside, the staff greeted me, asked if it was my first time, offered me samples, walked me through the menu, and gave recommendations based on what they personally liked and what they thought I'd enjoy. They even explained which sauces paired best with different items. The energy in the restaurant was so upbeat and welcoming, even though they were incredibly busy. They treated every customer that way, and it really made me feel like they value both their employees and their customers. That positive atmosphere definitely stood out. On top of that, the food was fresh, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. I left thinking, "I'm definitely coming back." My second visit was around the start of the dinner rush, around 6:00-6:30 p.m., and it was a completely different experience. The staff was still kind and polite, but the energy just wasn't the same. It felt much quieter and less engaging than my first visit. I also paid for extra sauce because I remembered wanting more the first time and having to pay for it, but my meal came without any sauce on the food--it was only on the side. When I asked about it, they had no problem fixing it and were very friendly about it, which I appreciated but it just seemed odd that the first time my food was made with sauce included. Unfortunately, the food itself also didn't taste quite as good as it did during my first visit. I haven't tried any of the desserts yet, but they looked incredible. The cake slices are HUGE--I honestly think one slice could easily be shared between two or even three people. At around $7.99, I think they're reasonably priced considering the portion size. Overall, I also found the menu prices to be fair, and there's a great variety of options to choose from. Because my experiences were so different, I'm giving this place 4 stars instead of 5. If my second visit had matched my first, this easily would have been a five-star review. I'll definitely be back, and next time I'll probably stick to going during lunch since that first experience was so memorable. For anyone wondering what I ordered, I got the chicken and lamb halal over rice. It came with onions, tomatoes, and a few other toppings (I don't eat onions, so I can't remember everything that was included), along with a piece of naan bread. During my first visit, I couldn't decide between breakfast and lunch, and the staff recommended I try the rice platter--and I'm so glad they did because it was delicious. I still couldn't resist ordering a side of French toast, though, and that was a great choice too! Everything was generously portioned, and I left full both times with left overs. I do believe they told me they serve breakfast all day as well.

I finally made the drive out to Marcellus and got my hands on one (maybe 2, lol). The shop is so delightful. Upon entering, you are welcome with amazing wall art that represents Syracuse and our local sports teams. If you could combine a sports bar & sandwich shop in one that's the vibe Holy Cow gave. I ordered 2 subs. A traditional classic philly with just steak, cheese & mayo. As well as their Holy Smoke steak sub, which came with an array of hot peppers and onions. The bread rolls Holy Cow uses are the exact same rolls that are used in most sandwich shops in Philadelphia, so right off the back, we were off to an amazing start. My lunch date devoured their Holy Smoke steak sub, stated that it was perfect, and needed no additional items. I kept and simple with my order, and while it was good, I do wish I would have added some veggies to give it a little more flavor. The steak is tender, the subs are very filling, and they definitely are not stingy with the meat. Service was super friendly and kind. We chose to dine in, and this place stayed consistent with customers coming in for the entire 45 min that were there. Everyone was greeted, attended to, and received their food quickly. I will definitely return, I am interested in trying out their chicken philly very soon.

Our server, Karen was great at explaining the menu and providing nice service. She informed me that several of their burger have been rated the best in the state at various times over the past several years, which was impressive. She also said their chicken wings were pretty highly rated locally, so we started with an order of 6 of the wings with their Dr Pepper BBQ sauce. These wings came out over fried, looking pathetic, and they were dry. The Dr Pepper BBQ sauce had no positive effect or flavor, so I asked for some of their hot wings sauce, which she properly brought. The sauce was great, I wish we would have ordered that instead. It definitely helped the flavor part of the wings, but the texture (plus they were so small) really was a deal breaker for us and we each had one and that was it. Next up was their burger - I got their Beef on Weck Burger. I was worried about the saltiness of the bun, as I find Kimmelweck buns to be way too salty, but she assured me that they get these from a local bakery and they're perfect. So, I ordered it and was VERY HAPPY with it! The bun was insanely good... soft and so flavorful, while hardly salty at all, which was my preference. The roast beef on it was really good and tender. The burger meat was so very tasty and tender - WOW! The entire burger came together perfectly! I got it with a side of poutine fries and those fries were amazing! The Guiness gravy on them was very flavorful! Overall, while we didn't enjoy the wings, the rest of our food and the service definitely made this place a worthwhile visit! I feel like the service and mains far exceeded our expectations, so we can overlook those terrible wings and still give a 5 star review. I'd definitely return!!
