    Cheesesteak with longhots
    Nicola B.

I moved from Philadelphia to Syracuse recently. And I LOVE a good cheesesteak. Today, the craving for a chicken cheesesteak was more than I could handle. I found Gino's and was happy to see a place that touted Amoroso Rolls and real Philly Cheesesteaks! I was crossing my fingers SO HARD that it could be real. The verdict: This hit the spot. My only critique is that I wish it were a bit greasier and a bit more cheese. Mine was a bit dry and the chicken could've done with a bit finer of a chop. BUT that is an easy fix when ordering (I'm guessing). My partner enjoyed his as well - he got a regular cheesesteak (with long hots). He had the exact same critique as I did - just a bit dry. Still, this place hits the spot for anyone looking for a good cheesesteak in an area that is pretty "steak desolate." My partner and I will definitely be ordering from Gino's again! So glad to have a good place nearby.

Owner Gino Epifani opened Gino's Cheesesteaks at 458 S. Main St. in North Syracuse in June 2012. Gino's serves a variety of sandwiches, including the classic cheesesteak, using bread "imported" from Philadelphia with beef sliced by hand at the shop and Cheese Whiz (or American or Provolone if you prefer). But they also offer several variations: There's a Steak and Egg for breakfast, or a "Utica' Philly topped with Utica Greens, for example. The "Valley" is filled with onions and mushrooms. Cheesesteaks should be pretty easy and delicious, right? Steak with some cheese on bread. But for some reason, I've never been able to find one I really enjoyed. Every one I've had I've found to be bland and underseasoned and just lacking in the flavor department. I decided to try Gino's after a friend recommended them. I went on a lunch break and went for the Fireman's Special, a cheese steak with Whiz and hot peppers. Sandwich was made fresh and quickly while I waited. Grabbed a side of fries to go with it as well. The inside of the restaurant is decently kept. You can watch the cooks make your food as you wait, and there's a bar that wraps around the cooking area, with a bunch if chairs around it to eat at. I found the chairs to be too high compared to the wrap around table to comfortably eat ear, so I decided to take my food out front to the picnic tables since it was a nice day. I got a whole sandwich, and they are a definitely a decent size. I was not able to eat it all, especially cause they completely pack the bread with meat and toppings. But, I wasn't too impressed, for a couple reasons. First off, it was EXTREMELY messy to eat. Yeah, I know it's a cheesesteak and they're not exactly the cleanest meal to eat, but this was even worse than normal. On top of it being pretty greasy, the bread was far too soft to hold the amount of filling they pack into the sandwiches. It's great that they don't skimp you on filling, but it makes it almost impossible to even pick up the sandwich without it completely falling apart and making a mess when the bread just isn't sturdy enough. Secondly, the hot peppers were very hot. Which was partly my fault, as I asked for hot peppers, but they were almost unedible for me. Now, that's on me, but aside from the heat from the peppers, I had the same problem I always have with Cheesesteaks...there just wasn't any flavor. It was just bland, underseasoned steak meat, and even the cheese whiz itself didn't lend much in the flavor department. Employees were alright. Weren't rude, but weren't exactly extremely welcoming either. Prices were decent. A whole sandwich, side of fries, and can of soda came to around $12. Overall, I WOULD try them again. The bread was decent, though it wasn't strong enough, and they had great fries. I think I may enjoy another option more, something with some sauce to maybe give the meat itself some flavor, like their pizza steak option. But a plain old cheesesteak from here simply isn't giving me what I want.

We ordered 2 cheesesteaks to go from Gino's Cheesesteaks in North Syracuse THANK GOODNESS I decided to use a fork and knife on my sandwich. When I cut into the center of it, there was a huge glob of hair in there, like it had been pulled out of the drain and stuck in my sandwich, I almost lost my cookies!! I called them immediately, there were two young guys there that told me I could bring it back and they would make me another one (no thanks!) and told me I could call back the next day and talk to the manager. Well, I called the next day and they wanted me to bring it back to them. The sight of it made me sick and I just threw it in the garbage (after I took a photo). Well, they pretty much called me a liar and a scammer just trying to get a refund, etc. Makes me sick every time I drive by that place. Needless to say, never again.

You'll smell like the greasy food after 20 seconds inside...

Cheesesteaks ! Philly cheesesteaks ! Who doesn't love them !!?? It's great to have Philly cheesesteaks in Syracuse..except you won't find them here. The short story is that I visited Gino's, that appears to try to capitalize on the name of Philly's famous Genos but, falls miserably short of any Philadelphia authentic famous standards. They claim to "import" their rolls from Philadelphia...well imports aren't always better. Long story short is I ordered a cheesesteak wiz, wit, fries and a soda which came to 11 bucks. I waited almost 10 minutes until my order was ready ( no problem with the wait). The cheesesteak and fries were delivered on a plastic tray with the sandwich very tightly wrapped in wax paper. Why wrap it in paper when I ordered in?? I eagerly tried to unwrap my sandwich and encountered wax paper saturated in grease and cheese wiz. Please, place the meat and cheese inside the roll ! I could not even take a picture of the sandwich because my hands were so greasy. I could not find the expected peppers and onions so, I suspect my order was not properly made. Eventually, a cheesesteak was revealed after much unwrapping. The meat was packed in the center and with no meat at the ends. Also, by wrapping the sandwich so tightly, the bread was soggy with grease, the cheese wiz coated the outside of the roll and it was impossible to eat without grabbing a soggy, greasy piece of roll. I have never had a real Philly cheesesteak served on soggy bread like this. The cheese wiz was not of the gendre found in Philly. This cheese wiz was overpowering with its artificial cheddar cheese flavor. To add insult to injury, the meat itself was overcooked and included the unpleasant surprise of burnt, acrid scrapings from the grill. The expected onions, peppers and mushrooms were no where to be found on this sandwich. The fries were golden and delicious looking. While slightly crispy on the outside, they were awfully mushy and entirely flavorless inside. They cost $2.50 for a small portion size. By the way, the can of soda was great !

I stopped in on wing Wednesday, and boy, oh boy, was I in for a treat. On Wednesdays, their wings are .75 cents per wing, a minimum of 10 per order. So, in true foodie fashion, I decided to order some for "now and later." I chose their Val wings, Salt & Pepper, and Korean BBQ. We also ordered a Cheesesteak, I had been told by 2 people that this was the best cheesesteak in town, and I just had to try it for myself. Let's start with their wings. Are they a great value ? Yes! Were they amazing? Also, yes! These wings were simply great. Great size, great flavor profile, just great across the board! I can't imagine coming here and not ordering their wings. So good! You're probably thinking, well, what about the cheesesteak... well, I can assure you that the 2 people who suggested I try it did not steer me wrong. This cheesesteak was delicious!!! Full of tender steak, toppings, and loaded with cheese just how I love it. To make matters even better on Tuesdays, you can order a loaded cheesesteak & fries for only $8. The Old Ledge is truly a hidden gem. Great atmosphere, amazing bar staff, and a phenomenal cook!

It was like walking into a slightly updated time capsule which was what we were kind of looking for. We got the appetizer sampler platter (not sure what the official name is now) & it was good. The dessert was actually very, very good! We got the Sizzlin' Butter Pecan Blondie. The blondie was nice & hot while the ice cream was still nice & cold on top when it came out. Then when it came time to order, I ordered the broccoli chicken linguine and I was informed by our server that Applebees had no broccoli and didn't know when broccoli would be available. So I ordered something different but I really wondered why Applebees couldn't have been more upfront about their menu shortcomings. Cross those menu items off if you don't have them....I'm sure I'm not the first person to ask for them. When my FIL's salad was brought there was no dressing on the salad to be found anywhere. And neither was our server. My SIL's order can only be described as a massive rock covered in sauce on a bed of linguine that looked as though it had sat under the heat lamp a while. After we were finished eating we couldn't get our server to come back to clear the some of the dishes away. (We needed room on the table because we were presenting my FIL with a bday gift.) My SIL paid the check but hadn't gotten her receipt or her card back from our absentee server. When our server did come back she apologized by saying how busy it was. It wasn't the least bit busy. The restaurant wasn't even at half capacity. Most of the customers were at the bar. If these huge restaurant chains want to know why people are flocking to locally owned family restaurants with better food and service this is why. Because they suck.

I didn't let that deter me and was led to a table by the hostess who greeted me immediately upon my entrance. (I actually got to pick my table). She told me my server would be with me shortly which gave me time to look at the screen and pick a beer. There were happy hour specials and a full range of cocktails from the bar but I wanted a beer. When my waitress arrived soon after, I chose the Talking Cursive Rhubarb Raspberry Pie as I like the sours. It was a wonderful choice. It was tasty and had a sharp taste that I really like. While she went to get that I decided on the Lemon Garlic Shrimp dinner. I ordered that and it came with a salad that was out quickly, on a cold plate and crisp and fresh. I had time to enjoy that prior to the arrival of my entree. All the while the restaurant/bar area continued to fill up with people for the private party. This didn't take anything away from the diners though as the pace of the food was excellent as was the service. When my dinner did arrive, it was the perfect portion, and served with garlic bread. The shrimp were large and the lemon garlic was flavorful but didn't overwhelm the linguine. It wasn't a pasta dish drowning in sauce or juices. It had just the right combination to be tasty but not "sloppy". My waitress continued to check on me and as busy as it was for a Monday I never felt rushed, hurried or forgotten.
