We seek out places like this who hold them to a higher standard. (Usually the places that have "Cheesesteak" or "Philadelphia" in their names.) The litmus test is whether or not they offer whiz as an option. These were miles above the stuff you'd get from a non-Philly branded place in Syracuse, but on the lower end of the good tier. We would definitely ask for extra dressing/whiz on our next order, because they were disappointingly dry. It seemed like an oxymoron to order Whiz Wit and have it come out dry. With that said though, all the ingredients were amazing. The bread is light, pretty much a full on sub roll. The meat was tender and tasted legit. Nothing weird, stringy or clearly frozen. The Smokey Horseradish Dijon kind of got lost in the shuffle. Same meat as the philly, but the mild kick from the mustard didn't really match what a focus on cheese would have done. The chicken cordon bleu was solid. The minced chicken was actually pretty moist. We added cherry peppers, which took it to another level and I would now never go without. Minced chicken is hit or miss for me, but I rolled the dice for chicken cordon bleu and hit the jackpot. These guys aren't my favorite "authentic" Philly in Syracuse, but they hold down the north side just fine. I'd be happy to eat here any time, and the prices are pretty good as well.

Kyle Mastropietro, who also owns Kasai restaurant next door and will be opening a craft beer tap…read morehouse in the former Blue Tusk down the street, has now opened Danny's Steaks in Armory Square, a restaurant he says is what he came to CNY for: bring cheesesteaks created by a born-and-raised Philadelphia chef. This Philly boy cooked his first cheesesteak in Lee's Hoagie House when he was 12. When Charlee's Pizzeria next door to Kasai went out of business after just a few months, Kyle struck a deal with his landlord to take over that storefront. Before Charlee's, it had housed Provisions Bakery for 32 years. This place has been getting a ton of attention since it opened a couple days ago on all the local food groups and news, so I added it to my list figuring I'd check it out when the hype died down in a couple weeks. But today I was out early running errands and figured I'd try to call right when they opened and place a pick up order for a couple hours later, hoping I'd give them enough time notice that I could luck out without the long waits while I ran my errands. I called in right at 11, got through after a couple tries, and placed my order for 1. I got down there a little early, but they're on Walton St, so it gave me enough time to stalk the street a little bit and wait for a parking spot to open. This is a notoriously difficult street to usually find parking on, especially on a weekend, but I lucked out in grabbing a spot right in the tiny parking lot next to the building. I walked in at 1 and food was ready when I got to the counter. Good amount of people inside waiting, but I was able to go right to the counter. Woman at the counter was very friendly. Got home and the wife and I tore in. I got a pizza steak, while my wife just got a cheesesteak wit whiz and we both got a side of curly fries. The wife thought it was decent but wasn't as impressed as I was. I thought they were great, a little sloppy, but the meat was good quality, tasted great, sauce was great, and the homemade roll was great. Could've used a little more pepperoni though. I love me some curly fries, and theirs are great also, and the homemade cheese sauce was tasty. $33 for two cheesesteaks and two fries, so not too bad price wise. A sub and fries was more than enough for a meal, they do not skimp you on meat at all. Now, I won't say they blow every other place in CNY outta the water, as I feel Gino's Steak in Fayetteville is a VERY close second, but I'd definitely go back if in the mood for a cheesesteak again.

When we went back for the cheesesteaks they were gone, and we thought we really missed out. Turns out they were just practicing for a new spot next door, so we got our chance after all. A weird number of restaurants around here claim to make the "real deal" philly cheesesteaks, and I have yet to find a real comparison. It's the same owner as Kasai, which I love and respect. I don't doubt his ability to make great and original food. So I'm genuinely stumped about Danny's, like are they taking creative liberties that make it a different experience, or do you just have to Be in Philly? We tried a bunch of cheesesteaks when we went to Philadelphia, stopping at even some of the lesser known spots. Everything we tried there was an entire level over anything we've had elsewhere. The concept doesn't seem that complicated, but even at home we haven't been able to emulate it 100%. Just finding a place around here that uses wiz will get my attention. I'm not sure why, but you won't typically find it unless the place is taking strides to be authentic. We went all out on our first order, spending over $60 for two of us. Wiz Wit, South Philly Hoagie, Diablo Wings, fries and onion rings. The philly passes all the initial checks. Compact, lightly toasted hoagie roll. Looks like an absolute mess you won't be able to eat without needing a shower. First bite, the bread is just a little crispy, the meat is super tender, only when the taste set in did I realize I wasn't home free. There's something off about the wiz. My girlfriend and I sat down and tried to place it but couldn't sort it out. It tastes the way my food starts to taste once I realize I didn't get it right and start panic-adding spices to try to fix it. The beef itself was tender, but subtle. I liked the south side hoagie a lot more. I love a pile of cured meat with provolone on a dry Italian style sandwich. The meat tasted amazing and the sandwich was as good as any Italian style deli I've been to around here. My girlfriend wasn't into it because the meat was very touch and stretchy. It was, but I didn't even notice because of the taste. They sell full wings, not cut into drumsticks and flats. We ordered diablo sauce, and to my surprise it was actually pretty spicy. The wings were good, but the price was steep. The idea of an authentic cheesesteak place is a huge deal to us, so we didn't want to just dismiss them after our first trip. We came back and got two more - one with wiz, one with American Cheese. The wiz was the same as the first time. I try to write it off as a style choice we simply don't agree with, but it's hard to envision it. When we tried the philly with American, it was much better. About as good as Gino's, or the old Taste of Philadelphia place, or any of the places that take a genuine shot at the real thing. I never tried their other menu items, including the smash burgers. I did order from their ghost kitchen Decir Algo, because I love me some Birria Tacos. As expected, it was a beautiful application for all that tender beef they're already sitting on. We didn't try the queso because we were afraid it would be the same as the wiz. Birria tacos are always amazing, the only feedback I could give is that they didn't come with cilantro or limes. This is a good place, and if I'm coming off harsh, it's all in response to the claims of authenticity. They are not philly good, but what are you gonna do, drive to Philadelphia for lunch? Give them a try and see for yourself. Definitely order in advance, especially during lunch time. The wait time can get pretty long here.

My oldest son wanted to take me there for lunch one last time, since it was a favorite place of his. We showed up a few minutes after they opened and it was already busy. But, since it was their last day, I figured they would have a lot of customers who wanted one last sandwich. We ordered two of my son's favorites: Steak cheese and onion and fries. Let me say that both were excellent. I would easily order these again. The decor was eclectic, the music was Grateful Dead type stuff, and the beer selection was pretty amazing. It is a shame that they are closing. And sadly, it had to do with the owner of the property not renewing the lease. Why does everything have to be about money?

They even use Amoroso rolls straight from Philadelphia. Definitely worth a side quest if you're in the area or enroute to nearby Green Lakes State Park.

The first time I went was during the lunch rush, and honestly, it was amazing. Before I was even fully inside, the staff greeted me, asked if it was my first time, offered me samples, walked me through the menu, and gave recommendations based on what they personally liked and what they thought I'd enjoy. They even explained which sauces paired best with different items. The energy in the restaurant was so upbeat and welcoming, even though they were incredibly busy. They treated every customer that way, and it really made me feel like they value both their employees and their customers. That positive atmosphere definitely stood out. On top of that, the food was fresh, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. I left thinking, "I'm definitely coming back." My second visit was around the start of the dinner rush, around 6:00-6:30 p.m., and it was a completely different experience. The staff was still kind and polite, but the energy just wasn't the same. It felt much quieter and less engaging than my first visit. I also paid for extra sauce because I remembered wanting more the first time and having to pay for it, but my meal came without any sauce on the food--it was only on the side. When I asked about it, they had no problem fixing it and were very friendly about it, which I appreciated but it just seemed odd that the first time my food was made with sauce included. Unfortunately, the food itself also didn't taste quite as good as it did during my first visit. I haven't tried any of the desserts yet, but they looked incredible. The cake slices are HUGE--I honestly think one slice could easily be shared between two or even three people. At around $7.99, I think they're reasonably priced considering the portion size. Overall, I also found the menu prices to be fair, and there's a great variety of options to choose from. Because my experiences were so different, I'm giving this place 4 stars instead of 5. If my second visit had matched my first, this easily would have been a five-star review. I'll definitely be back, and next time I'll probably stick to going during lunch since that first experience was so memorable. For anyone wondering what I ordered, I got the chicken and lamb halal over rice. It came with onions, tomatoes, and a few other toppings (I don't eat onions, so I can't remember everything that was included), along with a piece of naan bread. During my first visit, I couldn't decide between breakfast and lunch, and the staff recommended I try the rice platter--and I'm so glad they did because it was delicious. I still couldn't resist ordering a side of French toast, though, and that was a great choice too! Everything was generously portioned, and I left full both times with left overs. I do believe they told me they serve breakfast all day as well.

I finally made the drive out to Marcellus and got my hands on one (maybe 2, lol). The shop is so delightful. Upon entering, you are welcome with amazing wall art that represents Syracuse and our local sports teams. If you could combine a sports bar & sandwich shop in one that's the vibe Holy Cow gave. I ordered 2 subs. A traditional classic philly with just steak, cheese & mayo. As well as their Holy Smoke steak sub, which came with an array of hot peppers and onions. The bread rolls Holy Cow uses are the exact same rolls that are used in most sandwich shops in Philadelphia, so right off the back, we were off to an amazing start. My lunch date devoured their Holy Smoke steak sub, stated that it was perfect, and needed no additional items. I kept and simple with my order, and while it was good, I do wish I would have added some veggies to give it a little more flavor. The steak is tender, the subs are very filling, and they definitely are not stingy with the meat. Service was super friendly and kind. We chose to dine in, and this place stayed consistent with customers coming in for the entire 45 min that were there. Everyone was greeted, attended to, and received their food quickly. I will definitely return, I am interested in trying out their chicken philly very soon.

Our server, Karen was great at explaining the menu and providing nice service. She informed me that several of their burger have been rated the best in the state at various times over the past several years, which was impressive. She also said their chicken wings were pretty highly rated locally, so we started with an order of 6 of the wings with their Dr Pepper BBQ sauce. These wings came out over fried, looking pathetic, and they were dry. The Dr Pepper BBQ sauce had no positive effect or flavor, so I asked for some of their hot wings sauce, which she properly brought. The sauce was great, I wish we would have ordered that instead. It definitely helped the flavor part of the wings, but the texture (plus they were so small) really was a deal breaker for us and we each had one and that was it. Next up was their burger - I got their Beef on Weck Burger. I was worried about the saltiness of the bun, as I find Kimmelweck buns to be way too salty, but she assured me that they get these from a local bakery and they're perfect. So, I ordered it and was VERY HAPPY with it! The bun was insanely good... soft and so flavorful, while hardly salty at all, which was my preference. The roast beef on it was really good and tender. The burger meat was so very tasty and tender - WOW! The entire burger came together perfectly! I got it with a side of poutine fries and those fries were amazing! The Guiness gravy on them was very flavorful! Overall, while we didn't enjoy the wings, the rest of our food and the service definitely made this place a worthwhile visit! I feel like the service and mains far exceeded our expectations, so we can overlook those terrible wings and still give a 5 star review. I'd definitely return!!
