After nearly five years of taking classes at Dance 101, I am planning never to go back.
Recently, about 20 seconds after our yoga class ended, I was in the middle of a deep stretch. A male teacher, from whom I have taken many classes, walked up to me and said pointedly, "Time to go. We need to stretch." I looked at him. He said, "That means you have to go. NOW." Before I fully realized how rude this was to say to a paying customer, I tried to keep things light, and was also hoping to remind him that I had taken his class for years. I was also thinking about how our yoga class was cut from 75 to 60 minutes so that his two-hour class could start earlier (and both classes cost the same amount)--without any compensation or apology. I was thinking about the fact that I knew he would futz around with his iPod and make self-aggrandizing jokes for the next 30 seconds or 2 minutes at the least, which was all the time I planned to take to finish my stretch. I was thinking about how he did not have a very full class and it was a large studio. Above these, I was thinking that I was entitled to take his class and occupy the same space I was now in. So I said, "Or, I could just take your class." His response added insult to injury, "Ya think?" clearly implying that I was not skilled or advanced enough to take his class. I informed him that I had taken many classes from him, and said "So yeah, I think." I even took his class when I was noticeably pregnant--I guess I am capable of it. (And he still doesn't remember me??) I even followed him to Gotta Dance which incidentally, is extremely nice all of the time, and deigns to offer us water and even coffee--free of charge!
Over the years I have gotten into arguments with the owner, who has never treated me like the one who's doing the paying. (One time she told me, "Look, nobody's getting rich here." Subsequently I have seen fewer classes offered, Friday classes eliminated, professional framed photography, flat screen televisions, and various other improvements that do not suggest poverty.) I have endured numerous cancelled classes without notice or compensation. I have accepted more expensive class cards that expire, allowing the studio to keep the money without providing the service--which is a lot like theft. I have been ignored by nearly every other faculty member whose class I have taken. They staged a student performance, and only invited their favorite students to participate--providing them with hours of free instruction time plus the opportunity to perform. When I asked about it, I was told, essentially, tough.
I have watched the studio take away the suggestion box--a metaphor for their whole attitude toward their student-customers. But the teacher's recent obnoxiousness in both impatiently preventing me from finishing my stretch and insulting my ability to take his class was absolutely the last straw. I had just spent an hour in yoga and meditation and it was all for naught after his infuriating remarks.
Gotta Dance and other studios in the area are much nicer (and cheaper!) and the faculty are as good or better than those at Dance 101. read more
