When one of my friends asked what whiskeys were available, the bartender slammed the menu down on the bar and told him to pick from that. She was consistently rude and abrupt, not only with us but with other members of our group as well. We also noticed other customers reacting to and commenting on her behavior. I understand that people can have difficult nights, but the level of rudeness we experienced was disappointing, especially when the bar was not particularly busy. The band was great, but unfortunately, the service made the evening much less enjoyable than it should have been.

It pains me to write this, but as a long-time patron, Damien's needs major help (John Taffer-Bar Rescue?) ASAP! I have been coming here for 10+ years, and it's the worst it's ever been. First and foremost, Damien is a great guy, a very generous and caring person. But he seems to have given up on this place. Some of the passion in this one great dive was lost when Rick tragically passed away way too soon several years ago. The food is just not that good, and even the pizza is now suffering. I won't eat there anymore after some recent bad experiences. It's a sin, since there are still great people and staff that work there (Jen, Alice, Sheri, Kristy, Sully, etc.). There is one bartender that needs to go, the large breasted blond. Unless you are die hard regular who kisses her ass every time you order a beer, you will not get served. I have seen people come to the bar, and wait there for 15 minutes, she completely ignores them, and then the people leave. If you want terrible service, she's your gal. I get it, you were once hot and partied like a rock star, but your time is done. You need to get rid of her - she sucks. Damien's is great now for people watching - if you like the walking dead. The standard regular back in the day was mid-20's-30's, either a fit male or a large breasted woman. The standard regular now is much older person, missing an eye, or a limb, or walking with a major limp. It's like going to the registry or social security office with a dive bar attached. Back to the bar, it needs a major makeover. Eating your pizza while watching some guy take a piss is not very appetizing. You may want to start by renovating the bathrooms, and change the doors so you don't see some dudes junk while eating. The entertainment has been on a downslide. I would do an open mike night to get people to go there who may have some actual talent. You see what the place is like when gunpowder and lead play, that's what they need every Friday and Saturday. Also, try to do something with the upstairs of the place. Turn that into "premium" seating. Leather couches, large flat screen for sporting events, keno, maybe a pool table or video game with dedicated wait service. Tell folks you have to spend at least $200 to reserve it. That would be a great place to round up 20 of your friends to watch a game. When it's not being used for that, make it overflow seating when the place is crowded. The food is one of the more pressing matters. It used to be good and cheap. It's still cheap, but not good. I understand kitchen help is hard to find, but this is what's killing the place now. Use fresh ingredients for the pizza, salads and wraps. You can still limit the menu, but make people like the food again. On the bar, regular maintenance and cleaning to the beer & soda gun lines is key. Some drinks have a funky odor in them - like mold, which is from not cleaning the gun lines, which is very easy to do, but if you trying to cut costs, its an easy thing to overlook. With JJ's pub closing, you would have thought Damien's would have more business. But at the Old Hitching Post, the food is much better, and the bar atmosphere at Venus is more lively (what Damien's used to be like). My fear is it will continue as business as usual here, and one day Big D will announce he is closing - and that will be a sad day. read more

But I digress. Service appeared to be provided by a mere two women working both sides. Getting their attention did take a few minutes, but we cut them slack. Once we had it, our server was very friendly and answered my questions as a Venus first-timer. I had a Down East hard cider (can, not on draught). We ordered the Greek salad and it was explained as a non-lettuce traditional. It was loaded with cukes, tomatoes,banana peppers,bell peppers, two kinds of onions, roasted red peppers, feta and olives. Table condiments consist of salt, pepper, packets of Parmesan & red pepper flakes. There are no real silverware or plates--all disposable with napkin dispensers on the table. I got a bacon with pineapple (tidbits not crushed) with burnt edges. My friend got an onion pizza cooked as per their usual. We very much enjoyed the pies. I think the bacon made mine a tad salty, and the sauce may be slightly on the sweet side. Pineapple didn't help my tastebuds in terms of discerning flavors. My crust and edges were perfection. Crispy and no flop. My friend's onion was actually the star--an assemblage of non-uniform onions sprinkled on top allowed me to taste the sauce more readily. I'm not ready to say for certain how other SSBPs compare, but I very much enjoyed my dinner. Had I the room, I would have ordered their plain cheese and pepperoni. Next time!

I called to express my disappointment and requested a refund for the pizza, making it clear I was happy to pay for the garlic bread, which was excellent. Instead, I was told I needed to drive all the way back for a replacement pizza. When I questioned that response, the owner became incredibly rude and proceeded to yell at me. His attitude was completely unprofessional, disrespectful, and frankly shocking coming from someone who owns a business that depends on loyal customers. Mistakes happen, and I can certainly overlook a bad pizza. What I can't overlook is an owner who treats a paying customer with such hostility simply for raising a legitimate concern. The pizza was disappointing, but the owner's behavior was far worse. After years of being a loyal customer, I won't be going back. Truly awful customer service.
