I saw the Daizu Tei stand at the KCC farmers market and instantly wanted mochi. The purchase minimum was 2 mochis. The mochis are filled with fruit. I tried the persimmon and mango mochis. The mochi itself was so soft on the outside and you can taste how fresh and sweet the fruit were!

My girlfriend bought these mochi delights and the mochi was so soft and yummy. The fruit inside was so over right slightly but still very good. It was the mango one. The strawberry was perfectly sweetened and deliciousness.

Coming to the KCC farmer's market in early February, I saw this stand, stopping to read the menu. Figuring that I'd better see what else was at the market before deciding what to try. My mental bookmark brought me here especially after seeing that word "pineapple". On my return, I tried to order a pineapple mochi... sold out. So I decide to the try the peach one... sold out. After a shallow sigh, I decided to get a pack of six mochi pieces, two of three different flavors to share with my travel companion. After getting my box, I found a spot in a patch of grass and tried the strawberry chocolate mochi (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=4qb-romFri8as8FdRCZA3Q&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q); the 1st thing that struck me was how it had a subtle sweetness which matched well with the good-sized strawberry in the center. The chocolate was not that sweet either. Later that day, I tried the mango w/white beans mochi (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=x_aQQ-aej3ter0Phd1Ggcw&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q)j, the special for that day, which was my favorite; the mango texture and flavor made this interesting and paired well with the white bean paste. I saved the least interesting flavor, the strawberry mochi (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=81Xx0j51kPM7-mjj56fc5A&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) for last. Despite eating it a couple days later, the mochi outer shell was only slightly hard while most of it remained soft and pillowy. I probably should have ordered with this one of the bean paste to make it more interesting. I am glad to have tried this as it is certainly more subtle and likely healthier than the mochi shop that I tried off of King Street last year. Since it likely won't be until next year till I'll get a chance to try this again, I'll just hope, if they are at KCC, that they have the pineapple or peach ones available.

Delicious mochi! I loved the texture and freshness of the mochi. Lots of variety to choose from. I got the Strawberry with Azuki beans, Strawberry with Green tea, Mango, strawberry chocolate. It was approximately $5.50 each. They are cash only!!! My favorite flavor was definitely the mango one.

Mmm!  Daizu Tei Hawai'i is here at the Kaka'ako Farmers Market on Saturday mornings

If I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure the word "Daizu" means soybean in Japanese so when I noticed the announcement for this vendor at the Saturday Kaka'ako Farmers Market I excitedly envisioned getting fresh silky tofu or even soybean milk. However, when we got to the Farmers Market, I looked for a food stall featuring soybean products but didn't readily see Daizu Tei UNTIL I saw a crowd of people in line at a stall advertising Premium Strawberry Mochi. I walked around the line to get a better view and that's when I realized that this food stall was indeed the vendor that I was looking for! I recently saw some posts from fellow Yelpers Terry K, Jo Y and Therese H from their Kaiser PTSA Farmers Market adventures where their purchases of fresh fruit-filled (strawberry, peach or mango) mochi were simply delectable and mouthwatering but I didn't know the name of the vendor where they got those treats from. Turns out, Daizu Tei Hawai'i appears at various Farmers Markets on the island really does feature various soybean products such as silky tofu, black sesame or edamame tofu, black nattō and Japanese and Korean miso. However, they have the distinction of making fresh fruit-filled mochi which, if my taste buds have some memory, would give the Big Island's Two Ladies Kitchen a run for their money. Well, at least I won't have to travel to the Big Island during this pandemic to get these treats. By the time our turn in line came up, a lot of their mochi products were sold out but we still came away with 2 pieces each of fresh peach wedges and whole strawberries with chocolate mochi. The woman who took our order was friendly and charmingly guided us through their menu. She proclaimed "Everything is made from scratch" and though I was looking at trying their black sesame seed tofu, the sweet rice mochi dessert snacks pulled harder on my taste buds. As there was a line of people behind us, I just bought the fruit-filled mochi and as her young helper (I'm assuming daughter) helped to pack our goodies, the woman reminded us that her mochi is freshly made, doesn't contain preservatives and should be eaten or refrigerated as soon as possible. We rushed home and cut into our mochi to savor the sweet Summer ripe fruit and the soft chewy mochi while toasting with flutes filled with 2006 Dom Perignon Rosé Lenny Kravitz because I've been saving this bottle of bubbly to celebrate this milestone birth month. We're looking forward to returning to Daizu Tei soon!

Fruit-filled mochi at the Kaka'ako Farmer's Market! I got a great tip from Lora C. She said that there would be a new vendor this Saturday morning! She didn't give me the name of the company, but I found them because this booth (Daizu-Tei) had the longest line! We all waited patiently in the sunshine. It was about 8:30am and most of the flavors were sold out. I got one of each of what was left: Strawberry mochi Strawberry mochi with beans Strawberry mochi with chocolate The strawberries were fresh, firm, and tart. I liked the chocolate one the best because it had the most combinations of flavor! I was told upon purchase that no preservatives are used, so eat it right away - that's perfect because I had brought some chopsticks! I stood in the shade of the parking structure and gobbled the three strawberry mochis down! Maybe I will go to the Mililani Farmer's Market tomorrow morning (Sunday) and aim for the peach and pineapple mochi!!! Yum!!!

This was the first stall that we stopped at at the KCC Farmers Market. The line was pretty long but it was fast moving. We got a box of 4 mochis which to my surprise was ~$20. But I get why... They are pretty big and they are filled with fruits (ours has strawberry, peach, mango). The juicy fruit was enchased in this delicate soft and chewy mochi.

I got to visit them at the kaka'ako farmers market. This stall immediately caught my eyes with the long line! the shop - Daizu Tei, sells these mochi with fresh fruits inside, some even filled with azuki. My favorite was the matcha powder on!

3 Strawberry Azuki Mochi & 1 Chocolate Strawberry Mochi
    Amanda I.

We stopped by Daizu Tei, setup out of a van in the parking lot across from Costco Hawaii Kai, on Girl's Day. They had strawberry mochi, strawberry azuki mochi, and strawberry chocolate mochi. They were priced by the piece (about $4 each) and we were given the option of a box of 4, 6, or 8 pieces. We were informed that the mochi was fresh, made without preservatives, and completely organic! The lady helping us was also incredibly friendly and nice. Trying to branch out, I tried the strawberry chocolate mochi. There was a firm dark chocolate dollop on top (the mochi was not chocolate flavored). The texture was similar to chocolate covered strawberry chocolate, in that it was firm and crunchy. But it was thicker and therefore more indulgent. I would highly recommend it! The mochi was soft and super fresh. The strawberry could have been sweeter but yummy nonetheless. I highly recommend Daizu Tei. The mochi uses high quality ingredients and tastes delicious.

In addition, they offer local favorites like li-hing gummy bears and assorted flavored sembei, giving you plenty of sweet and savory options to choose from. The employee at the register was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, happily sharing information about the different mochi flavors and offerings. Most importantly, the mochi here is absolutely delicious. During this visit, we ordered a Girls' Day pack and tried the chocolate ganache Oreo flavor which was amazing. There is a whole tangerine in the mochi and it was sweet, juicy and sweet. Never had anything like this. The strawberry mochi was also a must buy. It took off so well that in 2000, he founded Hawaiian Chip Company in Kalihi. This assures only the freshest and highest quality chips that they can produce. They also use canola oil (trans-fat free) and minimal amounts of sodium, and are preservative-free. The Hawaiian Chip Co.'s has expanded its product line over the years and offers the following: * Taro and sweet potato chips mix. Combine earthly richness of taro with the subtle sweetness of Okinawan and golden sweet potatoes of five flavors of hand-peeled, thinly sliced chips that are lightly seasoned: original (lightly salted), zesty garlic, Kiawe BBQ, Kiawe Fire, and sugar coated. * BBQ and hot sauces. The Kilauea Fire BBQ sauce was introduced in 2008, which has a spicy kick and great as a marinade for beef, chicken, pork; can be used as a dipping sauce. The Kilauea Fire Hot Sauce is spicier and less sweet than the Kilauea Fire BBQ Sauce. This led to the Raging Volcano Hot Sauce, which is a vinegar-based hot sauce and the spiciest hot sauce that they make. They also offer a Papaya Seed Salad Dressing. * Collaboration with Eden in Love in offering colorful logo tote bags. * Menehune Mac Hawaiian chocolates. You can get this exact item at a lower price in their showroom, plus it may be fresher. For home snacking, I love their Bits of Chips, a mixture of whole chips and broken pieces that are sold at a discounted price. They are not always available, as it depends on when the chips are available and made. It is suggested to call the store to inquire if there are any available. Once we were taking our Pastor friend and his wife from Japan around the island, and they wanted to stop there to purchase a bag of Bits of Chips and hand-carried it back to Japan! Staff is very friendly and welcoming. Samples are freely given out as you enter the showroom, and you can take it out back and try the different toppings. Service is efficient and quick. The building houses its small showroom retail store and is their factory where the chips are cut and fried. Hours of operation are Mon to Fri 9a to 5p, Sat 9a to 3p, Sun closed. His answer: the ultimate deliciousness is achieved when you bring out the natural flavor of an ingredient, and sushi does the bare minimum to alter what's already at peak freshness. Hawaiian Chip Company operates by that exact same creed, and they've been doing it quietly since 1999. Their Okinawan sweet potatoes come from the Big Island and Oahu's North Shore, and the golden sweet potatoes are grown on Molokai. These aren't commodity ingredients -- they're sourced with intention. Each variety is sliced paper-thin and fried to order, and the result is a chip so delicate it almost dissolves, while still delivering a clean, distinct flavor that tells you exactly which potato you're eating. The taro tastes like taro. The Okinawan sweet potato has that gorgeous purple-fleshed earthiness. The golden sweet potato is subtly sweet and buttery. Nature does the heavy lifting here. There's a whole lineup of powdered seasonings to explore -- Zesty Garlic, Cajun, Maui Onion, Furikake, barbecue -- and they're genuinely fun. But try a plain chip first. You'll understand immediately why they don't need the seasoning. Pro tip: Come on Saturday. The Saturday experience unlocks kalua pig sliders, Island Brew beverages, and gelato/sorbet made with local fruits. Pair a warm bag of taro chips with a kalua pork slider and a tropical tea, and you have one of the most underrated snack experiences in all of Honolulu. This is a place that respects its ingredients. In a world of artificial flavors and over-seasoned everything, that's quietly radical.
