So my gf LOVES Dairy Queen. LOVES IT. When we get a blizzard, she likes to get the chocolate extreme blizzard, but instead of brownie bits, she asks for them to use pieces of M&Ms. No biggie. We've been to lots of DQs across a few states, and they always go "Sure, no prob, whatevs." Without fail. Then we roll on up to this one and ask for the same. The guy behind the counter looks real exasperated for a moment, then says he can do it. After ringing us up, the guy continues to say that "He's doing us a favor" by letting this slide because she should charge us for a second blizzard in order to make this work and that "a chocolate extreme blizzard is a chocolate extreme blizzard. Nothing else." and that "This won't happen again." Really? Okay guy, sorry, I mean Lord of All Blizzards. Calm down. I've worked at a DQ before. Nobody gives a shit about the extras in a blizzard. What's not to love about DQ? As the creepy mouth says on all their commercials, they have the best of both worlds: hot eats and cool treats. The real reason I love DQ is because it reminds me of my childhood. No matter how old I get, every time I take a spoonful of a blizzard I feel like I'm whisked away to being 7 years old wearing a tie-dyed sundress just coming from running through the sprinkler in my backyard. When this first opened, it was the only DQ in the northside of the city and all the yuppies said a large and communal "Hooray!!" Now we have another place to go after our dinner dates or when we just want some comfort-food dessert. If you live anywhere near here, it's the perfect place to walk to in the summertime, plus you feel a little less guilty if you are walking to and fro. This DQ makes blizzard dreams come true. I love the $1 ice cream sundae on Mc D's, but sometimes, the urge hits you and you need that blizzard and you will do anything for it. Everything at this DQ is pretty great. Lots of seating, good staff, and usually clean. Hours change for winter which is frustrating. This is Chicago ..I can handle the winter! GIVE ME MY DQ! I've never had a bad experience at DQ...except for this one, in which I always have a bad experience. If only it was the manager that was rude and nasty, I'd be OK (white guy, balding super rude, customer is always wrong, hates his life probably, etc...) (African american manager with dreadlocks is possibly the nicest person I've ever met at a DQ try and go when she's there!) I order the same thing, every single time, I'm very predictable that way. I'd say 1/2 the time the order is wrong (I order a blizzard with twist ice cream and I watch them either soft serve vanilla OR chocolate, very rarely twist). When I do ask them to correct it, I not only get told that I ordered it wrong and that its my fault, but that they check their system to 'Make sure' I deserve a remake, my order is correct in their system...makes me scratch my head a bit.... If there is a DQ that is barely further away than this one -- go there, unfortunately this one is walkable for me so I'm stuck with it...but when I go with a group we ALWAYS go out of our way to go to a different one, we don't like the rude staff. read more

I am a huge fan of ice cream and I have had every gourmet scoop from here to San Francisco and back but sometimes you just need some soft serve and there is a decided void on the north side of Chicago for this ole' time favorite but this DQ fits the bill every time I need an ice cream blast from the past! Yesterday I went with a couple friends to this fine purveyor of semi-liquid frozen treats... This being my first DQ stop in the 2009 calender year I was super excited! This was our first day that we broke 80 degrees so I expected a line and maybe some service hiccups, there was a line indeed but it moved fast and the happy and iced-treat savy staff moved with a quickness! I kicked off the occasion with a medium twist cone dipped in butterscotch, It was divine I was immediately thrust back 20 plus years ago to the DQ just steps form my home that my mother and I would frequent during the summers long before the explosion of gourmet ice-cream-at least in little Royal Oak Michigan... The butter scotch dipped creamy goodness was so good I had to jump back into line for another old favorite... I ordered a freeze (not even on the menu anymore, but the stellar staff knew exactly what I was craving and made it sooooo perfect) It was a grape freeze which is the grape slush infused with vanilla ice cream... Neither of my friends had indulged in such a treat before, they were so shocked by its creamy goodness I had to visit the line a third time and bring a cherry freeze back to the frozen treat troff we had formed in the corner of the dining room... The service here is fantastic. The people were so friendly and sweet, and the poor girl said it was her first day on a day that the line was still out the door 10 minutes away from close. I understand that the weather has been unseasonably warm in Chicago this year, and I know that March is the month of buy one get one for $0.99 blizzards, and we came at the end of the day...but how can you be out of your featured blizzards ingredients?? ALL my roommate and I were looking forward to that entire day was a mint Oreo blizzard and a Reeses blizzard, both of which we were unable to order. I settled with a turtle blizzard, which turned out to not at all be like what I wanted it to be. Very disappointing. I can't be too mad though, because the workers kept their heads up, worked HARD to get treats to guests ASAP, and did it all with a smile and a fantastic attitude. read more

Dude, it's Dairy Queen. Obviously the ice cream is rad, and the cones as well as the toppings always make for a good treat. So a review on a Dairy Queen really comes down to the experience of coming in, as well as how you're treated during your visit. So the exterior is super cool, it looks like a Classic-American diner, with pinstripe neon and a big "DQ" sign look'n straight from the 20's. Kinda makes you feel better about going to a Dairy Queen in the first place... There is small, but still appreciated, parking lot, and available temporary street parking. The interior is pretty neat too, it's full of old Chicago pictures, James Dean photos, and old news paper clippings on the wall. It makes for something to look at while you wait in line or for your ice cream to be made. Staff was generally nice. A good little visit! Look at you DQ. read more

I don't have much to say about the food because it's just standard Dairy Queen but service really makes a difference when there are multiple places in walking distance to get a sweet treat. After placing an order for the new item "blizzard waffle cone," I was told there were no cones (really? No cones at the start of summer during a Cubs game?) so I asked the cashier to use a waffle bowl instead. Shortly after that the manager began to berate the cashier in front of many customers for "making something not on the menu." When we confronted him about his behavior he snarkily told us to "call corporate then!" We did :) People who go to Dairy Queen want you to shut up, smile and give them ice cream. What's not to love? Great ice cream, and quick service make this an awesome stop on any warm day; especially great to walk to after a Cub win! The only reason they lose a star from me, is that I honestly don't believe I've ever seen anyone over the age of 18 working there... Ever... And I've been here a lot, just ask my waistline. So, that occasionally leads to some confusion due to an occasional lack of leadership behind the counter, but hey, this has rarely presented itself as a real problem. Go, eat, love... This is your standard run-of-the-mill Dairy Queen. They serve ice cream and frozen treats and a very limited food menu--you won't be able to get any food that requires a grill or deep fryer so no burgers or fries, just a few types of hot sandwiches. I've never been when it's crazy busy, but they are able to mix up some blizzards very quickly. There's actually a fair amount of seating for such a small restaurant and they have a parking lot that'll fit 3-4 cars. Most of the time, I'm in and our pretty quickly with my go-to treat--an M&M blizzard. One time, though, the guy behind the counter made me one without chocolate syrup in it (which should be standard) and he seemed perturbed when I asked him to add the syrup and remix it for me. I really wish this DQ had the full food menu--it would be awesome to have more low-price options on Southport! read more

I don't think this is much different from any other Dairy Queen in the country, but we appreciate it for its mere existence on Southport. I come from a much smaller non-suburban town, and Dairy Queen was something we took for granted, an easy five-minute drive. Dairy Queen is on the short list of chain food establishments in the city I will visit. When I'm in the 'burbs, it's an entirely different story, but in the city there is just usually not a reason. But I can't deny it. I love me some DQ. And I love it even more when it is 50 yards from my home. This DQ can get pretty busy in the summer, but don't let that line out the door scare you off bcs it will move quickly. I've never waited more than 10-15 minutes on the hottest of days. Most recently I tried the peanut butter sundae - fudge and peanut butter. Hot damn (or should it be cold damn?) it was spectacular. I know DQ isn't real ice cream, and frankly I'm not sure I want to know exactly what it is. All I know is that it hits the spot and that soft serve stuff is lower fat. 'nuff said. read more

I have been to this location several times. It is always clean and service is fast and Friendly. I mean who can complain about ice cream. Anything I order is always just wonderful. I love the little parking lot in the back and the picnic tables outside for the summer. I do have a suggestion, I think that you should make individual ice cream cakes. I have been to other locations in other states and they do this. They are in a sundae container and it is called a cup cake. I love the ice cream cake and don't want to buy a whole one just for me. Someone told me that this menu does not include all of the usual food options which I can't even imagine... No chicken strip basket with the fries, gravy, and the perfect piece of white toast? A Parking lot...yes it is really on Southport! Great Customer Service. Large seating area, even a few tables outside when it is warm out. Immaculately clean. Totally supportive of the neighborhood school. AND Ice Cream! All equal a great place to me! Although I've never ordered food here (their lack of a grill plays a part in it), the ice cream is GREAT! Blizzards taste exactly like the ones you've had at any other Dairy Queen. They have been flexible with my interesting mix-in combinations (peanut butter oreo) and have always gotten it right. The seating is nice, and they have a back patio and sidewalk seating. I subtracted one star for the wait that I often find. They seem understaffed at times, and the workers making the ice cream sometimes look as though they're not quite sure what they should be doing. Definitely not great multi-taskers. One thing I appreciate about this DQ is that I know they do some charity work with the neighborhood, particularly Blaine School. read more

Seriously, I could DQ something different every damn day. This location is great, though on warm nights and game days, the line can snake around the block. Even then, the people in line are all ice cream maniacs and you can chat longingly about the blizzard you're about to annihilate when you finally get your hands on it.
