Come early because the lines are wrapped around the the front of the building most nights. Most of those from Elkhorn know about Dairy Chef because it's been a staple in the community for years. However, Something I have never tried until this week is their hot food. I decided to give their burger and onion rings a try since I have loved their ice cream for years. I ordered their Extreme Cheddar burger which as you can imagine has a ton of melted cheddar on it. What I didn't expect was the fried cheese that had spilled off the side included with the burger. It truly was the cheesiest burger I've ever had. But the burger itself also was very flavorful and not very greasy at all. Their onion rings were crispy deliciousness. If you like extra crispy, these are worth a try! Both were such a nice surprise for what I always thought to be just an ice cream shop. I'm actually incapable of passing an ice cream shop without stopping for a cone, so naturally, I had to stop and try out Dairy Chef. It's like a local version of a Dairy Queen! They had soft serve ice cream and various savory snacks and hot food items. I got a vanilla cone with crunch coat and it was honestly identical to Dairy Queen's soft serve, which doesn't really impress me too much. It was good but not the BEST ice cream I've ever had. The atmosphere was nice and I can see why it's a hot spot for locals. The prices were fair and there are plenty of options. I might try it out again, but overall, it was pretty average. read more

My only feedback is I just wish someone would make vegan vanilla and chocolate soft serve. My lactose intolerance has made that a difficult transition. That being said, their flavor of the week is great and they have gluten free options too. Quick service, inexpensive, and large portions. A family favorite. My sister saw this place on Facebook being advertised and was dying for some of the ice cream for her birthday - she called to ask and they even had a lactose free flavor every week. So we ventured out there and while we were initially overwhelmed by the crowd - it's funny because the line really wasn't that bad. It seems like this is kind of a local family hang out for the area. The line got long but they opened another window and it went quickly. Our biggest disappointment, was that they were out of the lactose free ice cream. However, the ice cream treats we got were great - if I had one suggestion to make it would be that they figure out the way to mark something when you ask for extra - I had purchased extra hot fudge for one of the hot fudge sundae's and we did not know which had the extra and it did not end up in mine as I hoped, but I learned that the next time we go (and I'm sure we will) I make sure and ask that question if it's not marked. read more

Dairy Chef has been around for a long time, a true Elkhorn fixture, but they are only open from the spring to the fall, so make sure you check to make sure it's open before you venture out to get that sweet treat. read more

Great little neighborhood ice cream shack. Like Dairy Queen but better. Their soft serve is creamy and not too sweet. They have about a million toppings and several types of shell that gets poured on the ice cream then hardens. Malts, shakes, "storms" (their version of blizzard), sundaes, it's all good. In the summer there's always a line, which should tell you it's pretty darn good. I've never had any of their savory food but it looks to be pretty standard fare: chicken strips, fries, onion rings, etc. The main issue is the lack of parking. There are only a handful of stalls, and you kind of just have to finagle your way off the road and onto some pavement between the shack and the gas station next door. There is a small inside area to sit, but I don't suggest it. It's is serious disrepair. Old, worn, dirty, just needs an overhaul. read more

First soft serve in awhile and super impressed with this place! Very neighborhood, old school feels coming here. One of the big things they're known for here is the Tower. Imagine a 1 ft high amount of soft serve ice cream. By far the largest single ice cream cone I've ever had. They have a little holder you can keep the ice cream in but if you truly want the real experience you gotta hold it by the small sugar cone bottom portion. My husband and I absolutely love this place. The price is right and the Ice cream is ever better! It's a simple shack with a lot of flavors. My husband snd I always get a milkshake. I usually get raspberry and pineapple and be strawberry. The line is usually pretty long but don't worry it will go fast. They have food too that we haven't tried but they have a variety. Plus, the price you pay here is nothing compared to other places. They have vanilla, chocolate and a special flavor each day, plus mix-ins if you want a sundae or blizzard type treat. I've had the garbage burger, which is really just a regular burger but with an egg on it. Honestly, not my favorite burger. They overcooked it and it needed more seasoning. Plus, there was way too much bun compared to the meat and veggies. Despite the burger not being so good, the ice cream is great and service is quick. How about a Philly sandwich? Pork tenderloin, fish or roast beef? Dairy Chef has that and more. The ice cream selection is just as varied featuring their famous "storms" (a riff off of DQ's Blizzards). Just like everything else, they one-up DQ as the storms may be a bit pricer, but you get loads more ice cream and toppings for your dollar and the taste is far more natural. They also feature flavors of the week and ice cream sandwiches made fresh. Between the sandwiches, pizza (yes, pizza), ice cream and everything else on the menu, DC embarrasses every DQ, especially the one all of 3-5 minutes away. They even feature their own root beer! Every town in America needs an ice cream joint just like this one. Awesome ice cream, plenty of toppings to choose from, AND get this--they actually have gluten free buns for their really good hamburgers. I was figuring the burger would be like most fast food places, flat, kinda bland, but cheap fare. But wow, the burgers at Dairy Chef don't fit that description at all. First off, they're not cheap. They're not expensive exactly, but they're not cheap. However, they are big and juicy, and only one burger will get you amply full. The gluten free bun wasn't great, but that's par for the course; gluten free bread is never great and is almost always dry. But that's okay. We're just glad so many places have begun to carry gluten free options. After our burger, we had a small ice cream, of course. The ice cream is what we had come here for years to have. I had mine topped with Andes mints and chocolate sauce, and Hubby had some sort of peanut butter whatever on his. And there's just something kind of wonderful about this little local ice cream stand. Nothing fancy, but the long lines attest to how popular Elkhorn's Dairy Chef is. From tiny babies all the way up to those quite elderly, this is one of those hometown favorites that people will be looking back fondly on long after everything else in the world has changed. Went to try the ice cream, not a big fan of ice cream usually by my adult daughter wanted it before it closed for the season. We were hungry so we decided to get a burger and fries as well. Huge fresh real burger patty, the bun was to die for and on top of all that the fries were hand cut and delicious. My daughter had one with bbq and bacon, real thick bacon. Wow! This place is super cute! But if you don't want to stand in those crazy lines outside, just step inside and there's literally no line. I thought it was a fluke the first time I decided to just order inside instead of standing in the outside line. But NO. For some reason I can't explain, everyone will stand in a huge line outside waiting to order their food when you can just step inside and almost immediately complete your transaction and sit until you're food is ready. It has been like that the last 4 times I've been there. I don't know if people just don't realize you can order from inside or what.
