Four years ago, I moved from my beloved Arizona to Florida. Turns out nobody there knew how to make a apple fritter to save their life. Rolled up on my birthday this year and a move to New Orleans. Hands down my favorite place for Donuts in the city. The staff has ALWAYS been friendly and helpful. There are times when they don't have the donuts I'm looking for (we keep it simple glazed, twist or donut holes) but they are always willing to drop a batch. It's a smaller shop so going close to when they close may mean they don't have as much because the amount they'd waste would be insulting! If you want something on the more creative side this isn't the spot for you ‍. But they excel at really good simple donuts. I've been living in Gentilly for almost two years and Daddy's is a short five minute drive from my home. Being from BTR I grew up on Mary Lee's donuts, which are the die for, btw; coming to NOLA everyone loves Krispy Kreme - I'm not a huge fan. Daddy's Donuts have the same style as Mary Lee's, they melt in your mouth. But, every time I go in to Daddy's I'm greeted by nothing but RUDENESS. After giving them my business (AKA my money) several times over the past two years I've come to realize why I'm greeted by nothing but discourteous, uncivilized, ill-mannered attitudes. You can watch it unfold in front of you, which I have three times. How can you be nice, pleasant, and talkative to some customers but then be short, disrespectful, and hateful to the next? Sometimes it doesn't matter how nice you are to employees if they are stuck in years past then you won't get far. read more

Don't bother. They have slipped big time. Whomever was making the donuts in the past is gone. The dough is now overworked. The donuts are kind of greasy & they are now using some premix with a heavy fake vanilla flavor that permeates all of their donuts. My six year old even commented upon it. The Apple fritters have gone from sublime to yuck. There is just a general lackadaisical quality to their output. If you are looking for a quality donut, go somewhere else. read more

I'm really disappointed with this place and will not be going back. Today was my second attempt at getting donuts with my kids. The first time was pretty much exactly the same experience I had today. So both times I've gone we came between 11am-12pm. I know they close at 1pm, but they barely had any donuts at all both times we went. By that I mean they maybe had a dozen donuts at most of random donuts which were ones most people don't like. I understand trying not to make a bunch more towards the end of the day, but there's always a good amount of people when we come and if I owned a donut shop my mentality would be to keep making donuts as long as people are coming through the doors, just maybe make less than you would in the morning. Each time we were shouted at by an older woman (with awesome nails, props for that!) when entered saying "What you see is what you get". No "Hey y'all!! Thanks for coming in! We're a little short since it's getting close to closing, but let me tell you what we have left". She had this interaction with most folks who walked in, and if someone questioned her about it, she would just throw her hands up and say "This is it. We're aren't making anymore at all". A decent amount of people just turned around and walked back out, but I had my kids and knew leaving would be pretty hard with them and I just wanted to get some and leave at this point. So we're looking and discussing what we might want out of the very few options we have, and this woman is just staring at us with a look of anger and suspicion for some reason? My 4 yr old is obviously very excited to be there and is asking me lots of questions because ya know, learning words and all. The woman is seeming to get more and more agitated as I ask her a few questions that I couldn't answer myself for my son. Each time I ask her a question, she stared at me like I had horns growing out of my head and that I had just asked the dumbest question she had ever heard. She would respond in a very patronizing tone and would return to staring at me again like I'm the biggest idiot in the world (with horns!). I honestly just wanted to say screw this awful place and walk out cause I had zero desire to spend any money there again, but alas I had a crying 3 month old and my son who had already picked out a donut he was really jazzed about. At this point I was really more so buying these donuts to keep him from having a meltdown because if I didn't my gut told me pretty quickly that this woman and the business in general would not be empathetic to me having to deal with a tantrum, especially if we didn't buy anything. We bought our donuts and that was it. I guess they were glad to have us leave? Maybe they just hate having customers past a certain time for which I would think they would maybe change their hours if they don't wanna make and sell donuts past whatever time is to late for them? It really sucks because this place is so close to us, and we get donuts as a family every Sunday and sometimes during the week, and I really was hoping this would be our new spot. I was wrong. We're gonna go back to driving the extra couple miles to Tastee in Lakeview where they at least attempt to make it a fun, sweet, and engaging experience for my son, and have much, much, and did I mention much more of a selection of donuts regardless of what time it is. My gut and common sense tells me Daddy's Donuts wont be around forever like some other donut shops around here, because a business can't sustain itself when they're goal is to leave as soon as possible instead of make money and have an ounce of positive customer service. read more

After acquiring some rough directions (head up Elysian Fields until you hit Gentilly Blvd, then take a left) I was on my way. These donuts are top notch and native Orleanians were asking me where Daddy's was. Daddy's Donuts has absolutely amazing donuts, but they also have a large selection of sweet treats. It's not JUST donuts. They also sell fritters, cinnamon rolls, honey buns, and personal favorite Bacon Maple Bars. Unlike other places, Daddy's Donuts does not short you on the Bacon topping; they really pile it on. The price for their Donuts are some of the best I've ever experienced for pastries and the line is never too long. My only qualm is the operation hours (6a-1p) but it's to be expected with a breakfast pastry joint. read more

Great glazed donuts! They are yeast donuts in the same vein as Krispy Kreme, but bigger, fresher, and made by hand in small batches and you can definitely taste the difference. However, the coffee is standard coffee you would find brewing at a gas station. Get your donuts early and go home and make your own coffee. read more

I am originally from New Orleans now live in PA. Everytime we go to New Orleans, I have to stop and get these donuts!!! Their buttermilk donuts are like the ones that McKenzies was famous for except Daddy's buttermilk donuts are better!!! I have had others but these are the best!! They are so fresh and yes they do run out so get there early!!! And the coffee it is the best!!! To Nut G's review on 1/22/14. We actually were in New Orleans that week and again in March, and the donuts were just as fresh and great as they alway are nothing is every fake!! We have even toured the back, as far as mixes go his top grade flours etc. are stacked in plain view!!! We would so love it if our local donut shop was as good as this!!! Its fine if you don't care for their flavor but you really shouldn't comment on things you know nothing about ! And if you know anything about the donut biz. To say this is a donut shop is to say Michael Angelo was a painter. This place is a studio that produces donut art. I recommend sampling all they have to offer but highly recommend the apple fritter. Warm, soft, perfect balance of fruit to bread to sugar glaze ratio that gives the impression this might just be healthy... Ok, maybe not but it is delicious.
