The food was really good and hot! The cabbage was the best I've had! Jerk wings, peas & rice. Plantains were cooked like I love them, on the soft mushy side! Ummm! A great place with even better food! We don't get much Jamaican food where we currently live in North Dakota so it was important that we found a place while we were in town visiting. I am so glad I found this place! We ordered the jerk wings to start and they were so delicious and then I ordered the oxtail with rice and peas and my husband ordered the jerk pork. Both dishes were so good that we decided to return two days later and order again! Da Reggae Cafe is a popular establishment in the GSO. You can expect a wait time of about 30 minutes to an hour. It would be great if you could order ahead with that wait time in mind. You may not have a lot of luck with calling since they are usually super busy and tend to not answer often. The food is pretty consistent in taste though some days the food is better than others. I usually order brown stew chicken but stew chicken is considered a side meat instead of a chicken plate choice However, when I order inside I am able to get brown stew chicken in a plate which I appreciate. Something I've observed is the cultural differences between the cashier and customers usually intimidates customers who take the cashier as "rude" before they've even given them a chance. The cashiers are sweet and remember their regular customers by name. The waiting room is quite small so you may want to wait outside in your car. Very good cuts of meat. Delicious sauces. Omg and the plantains were sweet but they had the right crisp! Only thing I didn't like was the cabbage I already don't like vegetables but the cabbage was way to crunchy for me. I like softer cabbage. Ohh!!! And the roti is NOT roti. Its called Dhal Puri which has ground up chick peas in it and it is MESSY!!! I also do not like stuff like that in my roti. I like it plain. Buss up shot style. The texture looked good but I didn't eat it. It tastes too much like Dhal which to me is far from the taste of Roti. It completely changes the flavor. read more

Very nicely decorated and spacious. I've never had Jamaican food but I'm well acquainted with food from DR and PR. I enjoyed my curry , rice and beans, cabbage and plantains. Pepper shrimp appetizer was excellent...I can't handle habenero but it was seasoned just right so you tasted it but it didn't burn you up. I have been coming for years but the last 4 times I've ordered my favorite dish from them (rockaway ox tails) they have been unimaginably tough!!! This dish is supposed to be fall off the bone tender. And for the $18 I pay for it? Other locals restaurants almost charge half the price and taste better. Unless you are looking for it, Da Reggae Café is easy to miss. Tucked amid a block of shops on Lee Street, the location is nondescript. The food, however, is another story. Da Reggae Café offers everything one would expect to find at a Jamaican restaurant and then some: jerk and curry dishes, stews, escovitched fish, and, of course, the ubiquitous beef patties. The food is appropriately spicy, but the dishes offer more than just heat. The jerk pork and jerk chicken are tender and not dried out while a side of cabbage adds a nice complementary crunch. There are no fountain drinks here, but the bottled soda selection (including ting and ginger beer) makes up for it. Da Reggae Café also delivers plenty of bang for the buck. Entrees come on a plate packed with rice (or rice and peas if you prefer), cabbage, and plantains. They can be had for as little as $9 (most of the meat and chicken dishes) and no more than $12.50 (fish and shrimp dishes). Lunch offerings are even more economical. Aesthetically, Da Reggae Café is a small but brightly appointed place. The tables are few and plain, but the wall posters (of Sean Paul, Bad Brains, and other musicians) are many, and the music (take a guess what kind) is perpetual. The establishment does not have a lot of staff, but servers are polite and attentive. We ordered take-out last night and it was fantastic! We had Jamaican Fish Bisque, Jerk Chicken, Steamed cabbage, Rice and Peas, and Plantains. The bisque had red fish in it. The flavor made me think of a slightly spicy she-crab soup. Excellent. The Jerk chicken was perfect: tender and flavorful. Their hot sauce was on the side, which is good because it's pretty spicy. I love hot stuff but my wife does not so this worked for both of us. The Steamed Cabbage was pretty good, it made me think of a light cole slaw. I really enjoyed the rice and peas, especially after putting some of the jerk sauce on it. And the plantains were lightly fried and tasted great. The dinner was perfect when washed down with a Red Stripe and Bob Marley playing in the background. I waited outside for 40 minutes in a doordash pickup order then another 25 minutes to figure out they didnt have all the food so they canceled the order. They had an enormous number of takeout orders when I arrived. I stood in line with those just to be seated. The dine-in area is clean and prepped with glasses and utensils. The workers were busy with the takeout orders and they weren't as attentive. However the waitress did come a few times to fill my water so it wasn't too bad. I started with the Jamaican beef patty and it came out fast. It must've been in a heated place because the outside was warm but the beef inside was burning hot. I suggest cutting it open and let cool and when you do, you taste the very tasty beef paste instead of your tongue losing its feeling. For the main dish I had to try the curry goat and it delivered. The curry mix was so balanced that it paired very well with the goat. The goat cut were a mix of slices as well as it wasn't all bony. Half were whole meat and tendons and the other half was the chewy tendons on bone. It also came with 2 slices of moist inside and crispy sugary outside plantain which was a great dessert. Their cabbage mix was delicious. The rice and beans was okay but mix that with the curry and I scrapped the plate clean down to the last drop of sauce. read more

This place is nice and simple. I had the oxtails with rice and peas, cabbage, plantains. I was there early so I think this is why my oxtails were not as tender as I would expect. I think the portion size could be a little bigger too. The gravy was delicious and the right amount to mix a little with the rice. The plantains were perfectly charred and sweet. The cabbage is simple and crisp and a good compliment to the plate. Add the ginger beer and it's a good meal. I will be back to get on the jerk chicken, snapper, and stew beef. Well done! read more

What you need to know: This review would really be around a 3.5. Great Caribbean or all around ethnic food in general is hard to come by in the triad area (at least in my experience), but Da Reggae Cafe isn't all that bad, I'd say it's average for Caribbean food. Food: To be honest, it wasnt the greatest, but at the same time the food wasnt at all bad. I had the Curry Chicken with Rice and Peas, Cabbage, and Plantains. My friend had the Curry Goat with White Rice. My Curry Chicken was not bad at all, the curry itself was tasty, if not as spicy or flavorful as I'm used to, the chicken might've been a tad undercooked as I saw some pinkness in one piece, but overall was fine. The rice and peas were super dry and had 0 flavor for me, so I had to dock them a star because that should be easy to make. The cabbage had a lot of flavor, but got kind of bitter the more I ate it. The plantains were A-1. My friend LOVED their white rice though, and liked the goat at first when she was hungry but later on said it was just ok and couldve been seasoned better. Be advised though: they do NOT allow you to substitute, which was a bummer for my friend who doesn't like cabbage, so she just told them to leave it out, and they gave her extra rice without asking which was at least nice of them. Ambience: Very unassuming, but what you would expect from a casual dining place. They do make you wait to be seated and the waitress does take your order so that's nice since I'm used to counter service from most Caribbean spots. I will have to say this spot was empty when we walked in at around 7:30pm on a Thuraday. Would've expected more people to be in there. Service: In general, our waitress (who seemed to be the only one working on a Thursday night), was very nice and courteous, and checked in on us periodically. Parking: We got lucky as someone was pulling out as soon as we pulled up, but the lot was full even though no one was inside. Not sure why. All in all, if I'm in the area again and craving Caribbean food, I'd probably hit up this spot, but only because there's not that many better options around. read more

I would call ahead if you know you want to do take out because they can move pretty slow sometimes and the wait time can get ridiculous. For some reason on 11/13/20 the cabbage was raw , barely any meat , I normally get 7-8 pieces @ 15.00$ plate which that day only got 5 pieces. The rice seem like it was day old and warmed up. I loved the plantains and the rice with peas! The cabbage tasted really good, but it was a little too spicy for me (which is rare, so watch out). On top of that, I had the curried shrimp, and it was absolutely delicious. The shrimp were so good! I've had the oxtails a few times and as many other restaurants that serve oxtail the portion is not generous. Today I decided on just jerk chicken for lunch and the flavor was mouth watering! I've been here several times and each time I leave to eat at home I'm never disappointed! I especially enjoy their curried goat. The meat's so tender and they season it just right every time. Not to mention that it comes with rice and steamed cabbage spiced so perfectly and cooked so that it's both tender and crispy at the same time. To top it all off, they add two good slices of sweet plantain with everything. They also have small entrees and snacks that you could order as well while waiting for your food to cook, which, surprisingly, doesn't take much time for them so you could be off on your merry way. I'm particularity a fan of their beef patties. I can't exactly explain it with words, but if you ever visit this establishment you should definitely get yourself at least one for the road.
