A truffle experience that won't break the bank! Da Francesco is a really popular tourist restaurant that has a very broad menu for reasonable prices. Our small burrata was 10 Euros, plate of Jamon was 10 Euros, my truffle carbonara was 18 Euros, and my friend's clam pasta was 16 Euros. You won't be able to find an equivalent deal in the US. They are quite busy but we were able to get a seat in the very back which was both a boon and a bane. A lot of crying babies came to our section away from the main dining room and service was really slow (she also gave us still rather than the sparkling water that we ordered.) We had a wonderful meal here. After some site seeing nearby, we decided to drop by for a late lunch. Came in around 2 pm and were immediately seated. The restaurant wasn't packed at that time. Employees are super friendly and attentive. I love the laid back ambiance of this place. Restrooms are in the back and clean. We ordered the Black Truffle Pizza and Carbonara. Both dishes were executed perfectly. The Black Truffle Pizza had an amazing aroma. The pizza crust was thin and fresh. Perfect light char on the bottom. Crisp around the edges but perfectly chewy in the middle. Just the right amounts of cheese with black truffles and truffle oil drizzled on top. Delicious! The Carbonara had al dente pasta tossed in with just the right amount of sauce. The pancetta added so much flavor and depth to the sauce. Topped off with pecorino cheese. Creamy goodness. Ended our meal with Pistachio Tiramisu. So creamy, light, made with quality ingredients, and not too sweet. A pistachio lovers dream come true! This isn't a quick bite kinda place. First day in Rome, hankering for a good plate of pasta and was at old stomping grounds, the Piazza Navona. It was about to rain so I thought , hey Da Francesco was calling. I've had a few dishes here: the carbonara, all'amatriciana, truffles on pasta, cacio e pepe, pizze all very good. It was packed and luckily they had a table. Today though was craving a lush seafood dish and bam I saw squid ink in pasta. Hadda order it. Then I went Hmmmm, maybe a meat dish 'cuz I was powerful hungry. So I ordered the roast lamb. First let me say that the service is on point, polite, attentive if not restrained. That's the Da Francesco that I've always known. The squid ink pasta was so delicious, slightly briny (unlike squid ink in Asia which run on the sweet side) and yummy. Had to take half home which kinda makes people wonder here. Romans rarely take leftovers home. Well the dish was awesome just too much. Then the lamb came, it was delicious, perfectly roasted but it was again a huggggeee potion , too big, enough to feed 2 starving people. I love a good roast lamb and Da Francesco delivered. I wanted dessert but too full :) Visits: Many during summer breaks in college. Yelp = 1 Tip: This is a small place, the food is very good but tables may be shared or you may feel cramped. I could eat here three times a week and I have a couple of friends who do. The ultimate neighbourhood spot, do not miss Da Francesco's excellent Roman pastas: carbonara, amatriciana, cacio e pepe. One thing I was sceptical about, that you should not be, was the cheeseless marinara pizza. In actual fact, it's fantastic and something I think of, and crave, often. The Service: A little bit slow because on the weekend, the business is super busy. All the staffs are very friendly and polite. The Food: Caprese - They don't slice the mozzarella cheese because they are all made fresh daily. It is so fresh and soft. OMG!! Totally different texture than the store bought. Lasagna - They put lots of cheese, very cheesy~ Small portion but since they put lots of cheese, the taste is heavy so the portion is perfect. Tiramisu - Not the cake type of tiramisu, it is more like a soft mousse type. Flan - The caramel sauce is not super sweet, the custard is so soft. They are so good!!! Dammit, Yelp. I came here with the highest expectations because of your raves. And you know what? The food knocked me out. However... We waited nearly an hour for our pizzas. Seriously. I checked the time stamp on my camera. Our pasta dish came out 25 minutes after my first picture inside the restaurant. My first picture of pizza was 44 minutes after the first picture. We arrived when the place was packed, but I noticed people who ordered far after us who got their pizzas way before us. Uncool. I was on the verge of walking out. Thank God my girlfriend ordered that pasta dish. We had to split it to tide us over during the long, long, long wait for pizza. Our waiter totally ignored us. Seriously, some of the worst service I've ever had. We only got our pizzas after the entire restaurant emptied out except for us. Now MAYBE we showed up during the busy time. And MAYBE our waiter thought we wanted to wait until we were done with pasta before shoving the pizzas in. Or MAYBE we didn't get good service because we weren't locals. Or MAYBE our waiter was having an off day. But there wasn't a hint of apology for the long delay. And dammit, I loved the food. The pizza crust was the thickness of 3 sheets of notebook paper. Absolutely melt-in-your-mouth amazing. But is any food worth waiting this long for? And is any waiter that inattentive worth putting up with? I'm torn. Possibly the best meal I ate in Rome. Easily some of the best pizza I've had in my lifetime. I've always enjoyed thin crust pizza and Italy makes them to perfection, with the right crust to cheese/sauce ratio. I tried a few different pizzas in Naples over a decade ago, and these were right up there with some incredible flavor profiles. My husband and I are in Rome traveling from Los Angeles. We are both huge foodies and we were extremely excited to try this place. We were seated after 10 mins of wait. However, we were NEVER serviced. Our presence was literally never acknowledged. Not one server greeted us or offered us a drink while we wait. I was torn as to what to rate Da Francesco. Let me explain why... So we arrived around 6:30pm, not realizing that the restaurant opens at 7pm for dinner. We were the 1st one there. As 7pm started rolling around, a huge crowd of people waiting to get in started to gather. They opened the door, and sat a bunch of people who already had reservations. They still had some tables left. After taking everyone who had reservation, they turned to me and told me that since I don't have reservations, I have to eat at their outdoor seating. It was raining pretty hard by this point, and they told us they had big umbrellas and heater for the outdoor tables. I was pretty mad because they had open tables inside, but having already waited, we decided to just sit outside. I ordered spaghetti with tomato sauce and eggplant parmesan. I can truly say that this was the best eggplant parmesan that I ever had in my life. It was amazing! And the spaghetti was perfect with it. This was the best meal that I had in Italy. After ordering our meal, we realized that they didn't turn on the heater. I asked them if they could turn it on and they said that they can't because it's raining. Also by the end of my meal, my back was soaking wet since the big umbrellas are shared between multiple tables. The waiters were non-existent outside since it was cold and rainy. So the point of my review is this - If you want to eat here, make sure you make reservations, unless you want to be treated like a second class citizen. Awesome food. Awful service. read more

This little place is located very close to piazza navona. After people watching for an hour or so, we walked over and got a table without waiting around 7:10PM. The staff was decently friendly-- the man who greeted us was great, our server was ok. We ordered the lobster pasta (so good!) which had cut up pieces of shell-on lobster. It has a little bit of a spicy kick but definitely very subtle. A reddish sauce with halved cherry tomatoes. It was tasty. We also had the truffle mushroom and bacon fettuccine which was great also. Kind of oily but still good. Very filling meal. Food came out within 15 minutes of ordering. There is no bread service-- I think you have to order it separately if you want it. I would rate Da Francesco four and a half stars. Luckily, they were opened when we visited in August. It seemed like many of the most popular restaurants were closed when we visited. They were very busy. We were lucky to get on the waitlist early. Many groups showed up after us and the waitlist extended to over an hour. We started with a couple pasta dishes. I opted for the fettuccine bolognese. It was great. Meaty and savory. It was exactly what I was looking for flavor wise. For our second course, we ordered one of their signature white pizzas with truffles. I highly recommend it. It was more expensive than the other pizzas on the menu, yet it was certainly worthwhile. There are many staff members coming and going to serve other patrons so there is always somebody nearby to help. read more

Went back again! Yup, this is my fourth visit to Da Francesco - and, it does not disappoint. So good. One thing I've failed to realize in my previous visits is the extensive nature of their wine menu. Really impressive. They also have some of the best servers in Rome - smart, culinarily astute and multilingual. First night in Rome and this restaurant made me want to straight up move here! Starting from when we walked in- they were packed but they were still able to accommodate our party of 4 outside with a heat lamp. We ordered a couple of different dishes to share family style. We started with the caprese salad, which is just mozzarella cheese with tomatoes but it was the best I'd ever had. The cheese was so wonderfully seasoned that we really didn't even need any extra balsamic vinegar or anything. We ordered the octopus carpaccio as our next appetizer, which turned out to be the most amazing THINLY sliced pieces of octupus that tasted like heaven with each slice. The next and all time fav amongst the whole group were the meatballs, they were ginormous and were absolutely cooked to perfection- not too overly cooked/dry but not too raw. It was literally the most amazingly fall off the bone meat (except there was no bone) and was smothered in this sauce that had a hint of mushrooms. For entrees, we ordered the lobster linguine and the spaghetti with clams. Both dishes were savory without too much of the unhealthy sauces that would make you think the dish was fattening. They were very light and came in the perfect sized portions. All of our favs was the spaghetti with clams, it was just so mouth wateringly delicious and we even thought about getting more. To finish, we ordered the tiramisu, it came in a small portion and was pretty good but in my honest opinion was just ok. Maybe I'm not the biggest fan of tiramisu because of the soft consistency, but my friends all loved it! Overall I would recommend this place to anyone that's visiting Rome! We had a wonderful dinner here. They have an upstairs which we enjoyed all to ourselves almost. Which made for a quiet and intimate experience. Downstairs was packed and loud. We tried to do the proper Italian dinner this time by ordering the first course pasta, followed by the "secondi" meat plate. We chose the meatballs again. It was a delicious dinner with nice plating. With the interior decor It made for a classy meal. It was a little pricey for what we had compared to our last dinner complied of the same dishes from Da Tonino just up the street. We love this little local spot in Rome, even though we always make several wrong turns when we try to find it. I love to make it there when they are serving pasta tartufata. I wish they would use a little less butter, as it has a tendency to fill you up too much and even over power some of the tartufo. But the pasta is always absolutely perfect here. They have a good selection of affordable wines, and they have a good atmosphere. They are frequented both by locals and by tourists (sometimes in groups so it can get fairly noisy). The wait staff here is extra, in a good way. Everyone is considerate, pleasant, helpful, and interesting. One of the most important things to know is that it is definitely a place where you will want to reserve enough internal space to order dessert. They always have several that are so mouthwatering it makes it hard to choose. I'm not going to tell you my favorite because I want to increase the chances they have it for me the next time I go back! Having just stayed in Sorrento the past five days, we were really hoping for some good pasta vs. touristy stuff, and we were not let down. First off, the service was a little quirky but great. The lady that welcomed us was a bit stiff, but our server was an older gentleman that was very helpful. For example, when ordering a glass of wine, he gave me the 'you sure you want that one...' and brought out both the bottle that I ordered and another that he recommended and offered tasters. His recommendation was much better, and this was the first time I've been offered samples at a decent cafe in Rome (or many other major city for that matter). The pasta was generally good. My oldest loved his porcini mushroom fettuccine, I enjoyed pasta with an oxtail sauce, and my wife/daughter liked their Spaghetti alla Amatriciana but found it not spicy enough and a little oily. Oh, Da Francesco. You are recommended by everyone in the area. You are recommended by hundreds of people on Yelp. Yet, I cannot understand why. I came here with my family after hearing maybe four different people recommend this place. It was only a couple of blocks from our Airbnb, so I figured - why not? The wait wasn't bad, maybe 10 minutes even though the place was packed late in the afternoon. If a place is so full so late in the day, it must be doing something right, right?! Once we were seated, I ordered a truffle pizza and a spaghetti carbonara with truffles. While the truffle pizza was on the menu, the carbonara was not even though Yelp is filled with pictures of it. They said not to worry, they will make it. My parents got a couple of small chickens. The truffle pizza and the carbonara came out with absolutely no truffles. Nothing like the pictures online. I asked them why I didn't get any truffles in the middle of white truffle season in Italy? They said that they don't use truffles anymore and that they just use truffle oil. Anyone that knows anything about truffle oil knows that it is the same thing as snake oil and complete garbage in comparison to truffles. The rest of the pizza was fine even though it was drowned and soaked through in truffle oil. The pasta was atrocious. It was so Al-Dente that when I would bite into it, pieces would get stuck to my teeth. It was like eating playdough. I literally had pasta stuck between and on my teeth and they wouldn't give me enough water to choke it down with. I'm not going to comment on the amount of salt in the dish. What I will comment is how an Italian can get a carbonara wrong. I make better carbonara. My local diner makes better carbonara. My cat makes better carbonara. The chicken was a whole other level of horrible. It tasted aged. Very, very aged. It had a bit of funk to it but that was ok because they cooked it beyond all possible recognition of chicken. This little piece of meat came out looking like one of those heads from the Pirates of the Caribbean. You know the ones. I tried a piece and almost broke a tooth. Da Francesco's is so horrifically misleading online and in the community that I almost went back to the people that recommended it to us and slapped them. I am not a bit fan of Italian food in the United States in general. I think it is overpriced. Italian food in the US, at least that of which is pasta based, is better in the US, much better than any of the pasta I tried in Italy. A popular place for tourists located in the historical walk area near Piazza Navona, there was a wait list when we arrived in the afternoon. We were seated in approximately 5 minutes. Instead, we tried the black truffle bruschetta, roasted porcini mushrooms (without cheese) and a spaghetti amatriciana. The bruschetta and porcini mushrooms were just divine. The porcini mushrooms were heavenly - plump, and some bits were caramelized so it was sweet, salty, and sometimes crunchy. The spaghetti was fresh, cooked al dente and had a very flavorful sauce, not overpowered by cheese. The atmosphere was casual and larger groups may have to wait a bit during busy times.
