My mom and I accidentally discovered Trattoria Da Emilia while roaming the charming streets of Sorrento back in June and what a find it was! Not only was it a wonderful surprise to end up dining right by the water, but even with a line out front, we somehow got incredibly lucky and were seated on the patio completely by chance. I noticed what looked like the owner (or perhaps the general manager) walking around, checking on guests, and helping with service, which added such a warm, authentic touch. Like many restaurants by the water in Italy, the seafood here is incredibly fresh ~ and this place is no exception. We ordered the seafood platter, grilled vegetables, and ravioli with marinara sauce. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and absolutely delicious, right down to the bread. We also enjoyed some Prosecco, which paired perfectly with the meal. The view was stunning, and the whole restaurant buzzed with lively, happy energy. I would definitely return ~ not only because it was surprisingly affordable, but also because restaurants like this, with their true authenticity and old-world charm, are my favorite. One small note: the bathroom is on the second floor, so if you're older or have mobility issues, just keep in mind there's a set of stairs to climb. But that's very common across Western Europe. Fun fact: This beautiful little spot in Marina Grande has some real cinematic history. Sofia Loren and Vittorio De Sica, while in Sorrento filming Dino Risi's famous 1954 movie "Pane, amore e..." There are tables inside if you don't care about sitting on the water. Fast pace service. Can tell workers are working hard and moving fast to get people in and out. Food was good! Loved my gnocchi. After Rome and Naples (with lodgings and food of varying quality) the fam landed in Sorrento (which I knew nothing about). For us Yanks I might describe the coastal town as a mix of Cape May with a dash of the Hamptons (with maybe a splash of... Cuba?!). Da Emilia's was the Mrs.' "must try" pick... eating outside, with a stunning view of the bay, perfect springtime weather and... your lungs filled second-hand smoke (damn you, Europe, still thinking cigarettes are cool). Seafood-heavy (of course!) menu - we got a bit of everything... Calamari (not the breaded/fried kind, that's for sure) Mixed seafood risotto Spaghetti with clams Gnocchi with clams ...you name it. Easily the best dinner (so far) while in Italy. Portions weren't that big (wish they were!), the craft of (white) wine was excellent, the cost was more than decent. The staff (who were super cool) then recommended the perfect place for a dessert nightcap (Raki) - which was another 5-star place, too. Our dinner here was our first dinner in Sorrento and it definitely set the time for a relaxing few days on the coast. We started with a seafood variety appetizer that was fresh and delicious. Based on the reviews, I think we're in the minority, but our meal here was our least favorite all trip. My husband and I both left feeling pretty disappointed in the meal. The location is great - right on the main pathway of Marina Grande. We were able to get a table for 2 without a wait, which was great. Service wasn't great, but they were packed and you could tell the servers were hustling, so you can't knock them there. We ordered the spaghetti with clams and the fresh fish and found them both to be pretty bland and un/under seasoned. You could tell the fish was fresh, but it didn't really taste like anything. You pay a bit more because of the location. It ended up being the priciest meal we had, while also being our least favorite. I think there are much better options in Sorrento for a great, memorable meal. read more

Beautiful little gem right on the water in Sorrento. Started the meal off with calamari and a plate of mozzarella with prosciutto. They also gave complimentary bread. That was the freshest and juiciest mozzarella I have ever eaten. The prosciutto was so delicious. And the calamari was also out of this world! Massive pieces served to be shared amongst the four of us. I ordered the gnocchi and I can say I have never been served just a ginormous plate of gnocchi in my life. It was delicious. The clams and gnocchi was also very yummy! My friend ordered the ravioli and WOW. Five massive pieces to the point she couldn't finish the last piece. So good! We finished off with tiramisu. Sooo good! The whole meal was an experience and did not disappoint. And it was so affordable! I'm writing this review from the perspective of dining at Trattoria da Emila during our pre-COVID visit to Sorrento. We had an apartment in Sorrento (about 5 minutes from the train station), and our landlord recommended da Emila to us. We decided to walk there for Sunday pranzo (lunch or early dinner), which was about 30 minutes away down in Marina Grande. There was no wait to be seated in the pavilion over the water for four of us plus a toddler. The environment was very casual, and seating was like eating at picnic benches. Our server was friendly and patient, and she parked the stroller out of the way. We ordered vino locale (a litre of local red wine), and perused the menu. For antipasto, we had antipasto di mare. This was a generous selection of calamari, seppia and other seafood. We then enjoyed spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams), melanzana alla griglia (grilled eggplant), pesce del golfo "paranza" (mixed fried local fish with squid and shrimp), and cozze al pomodoro (mussels in tomato sauce with linguine). Everything was quite good, and worth the walk. I hope that they survive the current pandemic and we can dine here again in the future. read more

You can see kid playing, people chatting and relaxing, fishermen work on the net. Our restaurant just off the water. Overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. This place is famous on their seafood. The waitress did bring the menu, but I notice some of my neighbors table order something that is not on the menu. So, I suggest you ask what is not on the menu and how they cook the seafood. We started with Antipasto di Mare. This dish has local catch anchovies, clam, mussels, squid, octopus, local fish, and more. Got to get this dish. Our second dish grilled eggplant. Lightly grilled with extra virgin olive oil. Or last dish is the fried seafood. The shrimp in this dish is the best. Basically the whole head of the shrimp can be eat because they fried to crunchy. Homemade pasta frutta de mare with octopus, shrimp, and squid was delicious. The pasta was fresh and perfectly cooked. If you're looking for fantastic seafood in a local spot of sorrento this is the place! Not only is the food fresh and flavorful but the view is just spectacular and the wait is next to none. Let's talk food: I got the spaghetti with clams and my husband got the gnocchi. The spaghetti with clams was the best spaghetti I had my entire time in Italy as the butter sauce was so rich and flavorful and the clams the freshest I've ever eaten. The gnocchi was also super flavorful and had a large portion which made my American man pretty happy. Dinner was served with bread and we got a bottle of wine as well. two years in a row, this place has only gotten better. Located at the bottom of the mountain, directly on the water, expect to dine with wonderful views of the mountain side, and ocean coast. My recommendation, is to go during the sunset time, the views from the shoreline are breath taking. The restaurant is family owned, and if my memory serves me right, Emilia still works in the kitchen :) Menu is simple, you will find many seafood inspired dishes - 2 pages are your good. I personally recommend the Gnocchi with Clams, or the spaghetti with clams. Towns located on the southern end of Italy are known for the FRESH seafood, you won't go wrong here. This year, i had the Gnocchi with clams, last year, i had the spaghetti with clams. My preference is the gnocchi, why? the soft pasta with the creamy tomato sauce compliments the clams extremely well. Fair warning, 2 can eat from this dish (if you plan on having appetizers). The Spaghetti, when i first had it (2 years ago) had a similar sauce to the gnocchi, however this year, when my dad had it, it was more of a white wine/buttery sauce. There was no lack in flavor but more of a personal preference. My sister had the gnocchi with tomato sauce, and my mother had the grilled sea bass. Fair warning, the spines were not removed from the fish, this makes eating a little more tedious, cause you have to make sure you don't choke on a spine. Nonetheless, the plate was simple, delicious and well cooked. For drinks, i recommend the white house wine. Emilia bottles their own wines. The white, when cold is fresh and not overwhelming dry, perfectly pairs with the fresh seafood dishes. I look forward to my next visit :) read more

This place is overhyped because of tiktok or something and is not worth the hours wait in line. Wow!!! If you make it to Sorrento, it would be a sin not to come here for lunch or dinner. We stopped in for lunch after a walk through the quaint fishing village. There are many other options which I am sure are also wonderful. We started with a bottle of the house rosè, bread and insalata mista. The salad was wonderful. Bread was rustic and chewy. Wine was a perfect lunch beverage - crisp, tart and slightly sweet. Our waitress was probably the granddaughter of the original owner but we did not confirm. Many choices on the Sorrento marina to choose from, but none that have been family owned since 1947 like the Trattoria Da Emilia. Another recommendation from our hotel concierge at Boutique Helios, and another home run for quality and service. It's jam packed at the lunch hour, but they bus table quick and efficient to get the next guests in ASAP. We asked for the popular dish, and the waiter recommended the Pasta Fresca (mixed seafood pasta), which was clearly a great option. We also had a side of caprese which is one of our favorites, and the mozzarella was so thick and delicious you had to cut it with a knife. The meal came with bread and I also got a half liter of the house wine to go with my meal. The service was friendly and accommodating to English speakers like me. The fish was really tasty, the calamari steak was good and the shrimp was also good, but I wish I got shrimp that was less of a show piece and more shrimp instead. What a lovely ambiance right on the water. We got there early and were able to snag a table little on the edge of the water. I could see the fish swimming in the water from my seat. We got the caprese salad, clam gnocchi and fried fish basket. The tomatoes in the caprese salad were so giant and very fresh. The clam gnocchi was a big dish that we shared. The gnocchi was so soft and lighted tossed in a red sauce. It melts in my mouth. The fried fish basket was something I read about on yelp so we decided to try it. The calamari was a little chewy compared to other places we ate in Italy but the small fish were very good. The red mallet and cod were my favorite. The fish comes wholly fried so you can to de-bone it which made for some nice fun. We had our last lunch in Sorrento at this wonderful waterside restaurant, located in Marina Grande, a picturesque port village with rustic charm. This restaurant doesn't take reservations and it gets pretty busy, so if you want a table closest to the water you may want to get there earlier for lunch time (~noon rather 1 or 2pm). As with most other restaurants in this area, we wanted our meals to be all about the seafood. We had marinated anchovies since these small fish are a must have in this region. The anchovies were delightful, simple, salty and fresh. For our main entrées we wanted to have our last spaghetti alle vongole while in the Costiera Amalfitana since we loved this dish so much. We didn't know however that they can cook this dish with two different sauces, tomato sauce or "bianca" which is without tomato sauce and instead it's cooked with olive oil (this was not written on their menu and the server didn't mention it to us). Since we didn't specifically request "bianca" upon ordering we were served the one with tomato sauce (I'm guessing this is the default way of cooking the dish?). However, after looking at another patron's tables we realized that there was another option and that was the one we were actually interested in having. So of course we had to order another spaghetti alle vongole, this time though we specified we wanted the white sauce. I must say I definitely prefer this dish without tomato sauce. The dish with the "bianca" sauce was delicious, a bit spicy and it highlights the clams as opposed to the other one which overshadows the seafood and highlights the tomatoes. We also ordered the grilled fish to share which was served already deboned, an unusual thing for this area since most of the time the fish is served whole. I much prefer the fish served whole, since it remains more moist and juicy when grilled, and I don't mind deboning myself but I'm pretty sure some less cultured foreigner must have complained in the past and now the restaurant wants to avoid issues so they serve it filet to all. I wish they would change this though and give us the option to choose between filet and whole fish. We had Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio, a local white wine, which paired perfectly with our food. Unfortunately we didn't leave room for dessert but just from looking at the pictures of their homemade tarts and tiramisu it looks like any option would have been a delicious one. They don't serve coffee but not to worry, their sister coffee shop is just next door and you can get your espresso fix before heading out to stroll down the village. read more

Located in the Marina Grande, Trattoria da Emilia is a no frills dining experience in this small fishing village of Sorrento. Italian gastronomy at its best is an understatement. This family run trattoria serves seafood fresh off the boat. Wash it down with their local vino bianco and you're in paradise. Stayed here for a week and had lunch and dinner here everyday. My favorites are the anchovies and salmone marinato as well as the mixed seafood plate. The deck's terrace skims the water edge and it completes the dining experience by the water.
