Pretty cool space with a huge well-lit back room. The front area gets a little crowded, especially with the (espresso) bar and tight seating. They make a damn fine espresso. And their prosciutto di parma sandwich is great. Only issue is with the service. The only person working was who I assume was the owner, and he was on the phone yelling at vendors the whole time, while people were waiting for service. Hidden gem on the UES. I've walked past this little coffee shop so many times thinking it would be too pricey, but finally went in one day and peeked around. I had the best latte and the best prosciutto brioche in my life. Then I came back again and again. I've been there 3 times in the past week. I couldn't stop. I have been so sad since the Zibetto downtown closed. Although Da Capo is in a different neighborhood, I will be making the trip up here for sure! The cappuccino is perfection, the pastries - fresh, the atmosphere - European. There is a nice espresso bar to cozy up to true Italian music playing softly In The background. As opposed to Zibetto, this place actually has stools to sit on up front and there will be some seating out back in the solarium. Based on the fact that they have applied for their liquor license, I would categorize this place as a bit more of a future wine bar and light fare than pure espresso bar. As a vegetarian I can't comment on the sandwiches other than to say the patrons consuming them seemed to be enjoying. Would it sound terribly cliche to say that while sipping my cappuccino I felt transported back to my last trip to Italy? Probably. But true nonetheless. It doesn't hurt that the staff is cute as well ;) I would say that if you are looking for a break from the new wave of pretentious hipster cafés with the requisite knit hatted, inked baristas and want a more authentic Italian experience, stop in here! read more

We walked in and the guy behind the bar was busy talking to someone so we slowly walked to the back and sat at a table...a few minutes later, no one approached us so I went up to ask if we order at counter or table. That's when he told me "counter". Well would've been nice to get a greeting at the door. The dining area was drafty and smalll. If you look up, you can see how dirty the see-through ceiling is. Anyway we ordered and the food was pretty good. It was strange that the food was brought up from the back or the kitchen downstairs, walked all the way through the dining room, walking by all the tables, given to the guy behind the counter to then bring it back out to the tables. Ate here with my colleagues for a holiday lunch and loved every second of it! Our waiter Henry was so friendly, accommodating, and patient with our large group. I used to come here every time I was in the neighborhood (I come once or twice a month for a medical procedure). I would buy drinks, dessert and lunch. In short, I loved it. But the past few months, the service has gone beyond rude and is honestly MEAN. One guy yelled at me to "focus" when I asked him a question about a sandwich in the case (he wanted me to order from the menu, not from what I was looking at). Today, a different guy refused to make me a lukewarm cappuccino with a straw (I had lidocaine in my face and couldn't drink normally). When we walked back to the car, I noticed this little place and it attracted me with a simple space and menu inside. The tiramisu was excellent, one of the best tiramisus I've ever had. We got different paninis and all of them were delicious, very good mixture of cheese, baby arugula and deli meat. The first time I was there, I had a latte and a panini, and both the coffee and the sandwich were solid choices. The panini was maybe a little on the expensive side (~$10 for a couple tomato slices, cheese, and basil) but it was still good. I was able to get some work done there as well. I've always walked by this place and thought it was so narrow and small. Little did I know, there's a whole new world as you walk further back. This gives you plenty of space and lots of seating options. There were 2 guys working, one was not very friendly, didn't crack a smile or make eye contact. The other guy was overtly friendly, so personable and talking to everyone coming in, so I guess they're a good balance. I got an iced mocha ($5) that tasted like it was made from really fresh coffee beans. It wasn't very sweet, but there was a lot of flavor. I also got a glazed donut ($3), that was very dough-ey. I enjoy donuts like that so it was a home run. I was able to stay for a couple of hours and get studying done. I got here at 8am and around 10am it was pretty busy. It's a small espresso bar with good espresso, sandwiches, and good biscotti's. The owner (Anastacio) is very nice and so as the other barista there. I recently found out the owner is the same owner of Zibetto Espresso, no wonder the vibe and atmosphere is the same. I'm no stranger in this place. I always get my shot of espresso and biscotti here. This cute little place on Madison is a cosy little place to hang out. I went one time to the open mic evening and I have been just for a quiet drink. It's a great place but it's just a little bit on the pricey side and perhaps their coffees could be a little warmer! The setting is pleasant and they have made the most of the available room they have but if a private conversation is wanted then this probably isn't a good place to visit!
