I've been coming to D/Vision for the past several years because they have some of the most exclusive, fashionable frames around. They are also very astute at helping you find the right frame for your face. I am continually impressed by the professionalism of their doctors, especially Dr. Patrick Kwong who is exceptionally personable. Even with all these accolades I am seriously considering looking elsewhere for my eye care needs due to the cold, short and cooler-than-thou attitude by the sales/administrative staff. I've been a member of Yelp for over 3 years and a resident of Wicker Park/Ukie for over half a decade. I've patronized more businesses in the area than I can count or remember. This is my first review and the first time I felt so outraged that the first thing I did when I got home was sit down and write this review. I made a phone call at 3 PM to their location asking if they had an available slot for an eye exam the same day, the nice gentleman on the phone told me they had a 4 PM and a 5 PM appointment available. I inquired as to the cost of the eye exam and mentioned that my sole purpose for the visit was to obtain a prescription to order contact lenses online. I mentioned that I was not interested in purchasing glasses, nor contacts from them. All I needed was the prescription. The gentleman acknowledged what I was saying and booked me for 4 PM, quoting me a price of $75. I arrived at 3:55 PM, filled out the medical history form and sat down to wait my turn. The lady at the counter offered me something to drink which was nice, however I declined. I was taken to the back at around 4:10 PM or so and the exam began. It was a quick and perfunctory exam. Being of poor eyesight since birth and having crossed into my 30s by now, I got to enjoy the wide variety of assorted eye exams from various optometrists over the last 3 decades. This exam was very quick and wasn't as thorough as some of the ones I've had before. The optometrist ascertained my vision and I was done in about 20 minutes. I was taken back to the front to pay my bill where I was told that I owe $140. Astounded at the fact that my bill seemed to almost double in a span of 20 minutes I inquired as to why. Well, as it turns out there is a separate fitting charge if you are planning to use the prescription to order contacts! I offered to provide the name of my contact brand, my base curve radius for the lenses as well as the diameter, but my words fell on deaf ears. $140. Normally, I would just walk out and laugh but essentially the service had been provided partially by then. Either I could suck it up and pay the $75 and obtain an exam result which was utterly worthless by itself without a prescription, or pay the extra $65 on top of that so that they could order 1 set of contacts for me and bring me in again for a fitting. First and foremost, I don't need a fitting. I have worn contacts for over 15 years now and am well aware of what fits me well. Secondly, for those who might think that this is an issue of money - it isn't. It's the principle of the matter of being upcharged by almost double with having virtually no recourse except to roll over and accept the indignity that has been thrust upon you. I grudgingly accepted the racket that developed many years ago of requiring a prescription to order contacts online. If the issue is patient welfare then why should contacts require a $50-100 exam, yet you can go into a Walgreens and buy a pair of glasses off the rack without any checks? But like I said before, i grudgingly accepted it. This seems be to be the new evolution of upcharging customers for things they do not require and passing it off as being in the interests of the patient. I can't wait when 5 years from now there will be a 3rd charge where they will actually put the contacts in for you. I paid the $140 since I already had the exam which was useless by itself, just to get a prescription. I have to go back for a fitting now. Maybe I can talk them into tossing me a freebie and putting them in for me too. And then I can finally go online and order a year's worth of contacts for less than $100 P.S. Since I'm on the hook for $140 already, I might as well make it a round $150 and just register http://www.divisionopticalsucks.com for $10 at GoDaddy, post my review and leave it up for a year. read more

Horrible service! I lost my glasses during a recent vacation, so I came into the shop with the intention to buy a pair today. There were three employees working and two other customers in the shop. All the frames are under glass so to try anything on you have to have an employee pull them out. After a few minutes looking at the frames someone came over and said "Can I pull any of these out for you while I'm over here?" I pointed at one pair and the employee said "Are these for you? They are too small" I expected her to suggest another pair but she just turned around and left me standing there. This was the ONLY service I received. No one else came over to pull glasses out for me to try on. I waited around for 15 minutes but finally gave up and left. At that point I didn't want to give my business to the store. I definitely won't be back again. read more

While walking, I noticed a cute pair of sunglasses in the window. I went in and someone helped me right away. She went through all the options with me and even gave me her honest opinion and what did and didn't look good on me and I had a wonderful experience there. I recently bought a pair of glasses, so I didn't need to buy another, but I said I would always keep them in mind because of the great customer service. So a few months later, my grandfather was over our house and left the door open. Our dog ran away and while we were looking for him, the people at D Vision found him, took him in and called a couple of local vets to see if they could find us. They also drove around the neighborhood looking to see if they would see us. It was raining that day, so they took our dog and had him in a towel so he wouldn't get cold, gave him food and started to make signs. When we finally found our dog, we were so happy, but the way the people in the store treated our dog was amazing! They loved him and cared for him, while they had him, like they were the owners. We could not thank them enough and we will continue to support them by buying glasses and sunglasses and I wanted to share this story. If they go out of the way for a family and their dog, you know they will go the extra mile for you. I have then bought a pair of OP sunglasses for my mother and an OP prescription pair of sunglasses for her as well. I am hoping to go there sometime this summer for a new pair, for me. But every time I walk in, they welcome me as if I were family and always have amazing service. The people who work there REALLY know what they are doing and know their stuff. read more

The best in the business!!! I recently had to start wearing my glasses all the time and the guys at D/Vision helped me pick out fabulous new frames for regular glasses and for prescription sunglasses. These guys are amazing. They're totally patient and willing to help you look at a million pairs until you find the one that best suits your face. The service there is great and everyone is so nice and attitude free. On top of that they go the extra mile! My schedule is crazy and my requests even more so. These guys never blink an eye, they get me the glasses I need as quickly as possible (even when they have to order them from France!). read more

This is revised since I had to go in and get my Rx redone. I had my glasses for a bit and then needed changes made because my eyes are wonky and I have an unusual Rx. They were SO patient, nice, and accommodating. Nick is so experienced and knowledgeable. I actually learned a lot about glasses! Who knew :) And he bent and fit my new titanium frames to perfectly fit my face like a magician. They all have great taste and helped me choose my frames and now I look SEXY and even smarter than I already looked, which is near genius levels. Thanks d/vision!! read more

I wouldn't advise going with these guys for glasses. I've been a customer for a while so I was highly disappointed when I was overcharged. Not a huge amount, but hugely annoying. After inquiring about the discrepancy with my insurance the sales associate refused to acknowledge the mistake and didn't adjust my invoice. Along with an inflated charge for basic Ray Ban frames, I was given an inflated hipster attitude. Not a good look. At all. read more

My experience with D/Vision was over a year ago but I just made a Yelp account so I am writing a review now since I had such a bad experience with them. I have learned from them never to go to a doctor with a cute name. I went to D/Vision because I had an eye infection from wearing a pair of contacts too long because I put off finding a new eye doctor in Chicago. The male, I think Armenian, optometrist made me feel very uncomfortable with the questions he asked me. For example, he jokingly asked if I had slept with my contacts in because I was out late partying. That is not appropriate or professional. Since I did not have insurance at the time I asked for him to give me the cheapest eye drops, the generic. When I went to Walgreens to get the prescription filled the nice pharmacist asked if I knew that the eye drops I had been prescribed were $80. I was so mad I called D/Vision from Walgreens and had the pharmacist talk to him and change my prescription to the generic drops which were under $20. Why would he prescribe $80 eye drops to a college student for a 3 day use?? At my appointment he told me the contacts I had been wearing were an outdated brand and I should try something new. Since I have an astigmatism it is very hard to find comfortable contacts so I have kept using the same brand for years. I agreed to try a new brand and he gave free samples. They kept giving me different kinds of free samples when I requested to just order my old brand. Each pair didn't fit properly. Finally, one pair they gave me started to deteriorate in a few days and that was very inconvenient since I need to see all the time... So I called the office and the person who answered told me that sometimes happens with that particular brand of contacts. What? You gave me contacts that sometimes deteriorate?? So I firmly told the receptionist to please order the old brand of contacts that I had been trying to get for over a month by then from them. She finally agreed and that was the last time I dealt with D/Vision. read more

The selection is not that wide, particularly when it comes to variations in price, and the staff seemed too important to be helpful. The glasses I finally settled on took forever to come in. I received calls that they arrived, came to pick them up and they actually were not ready. This happened twice. This is the coolest, hippest place to buy glasses and there is absolutely no pretension. They have always been friendly and quite helpful. Chris, the owner, is super accomodating as is the rest of the staff. Nicholas knows my name without any kind of prompt! I will continue to go here for as long as they are there. I walked in and asked to see my old prescription. The clerk showed it to me but wouldn't give me a copy and didn't explain why he couldn't. For once in my life, I can't wait to wear my new glasses! After finding a few likely candidates in other shops, I stopped into D/Vision. At first I thought the clerk was a bit snotty, but no, she was actually really funny, just a little odd. Helpful and opinionated in a good way. I fell in love with a pair of frames, and then died when I heard the price. Looked for alternatives, but nothing could beat The Ones. When I admitted that I loved them but was balking on the price tag, she gave me zero attitude, and started suggesting options to lower the price (they have a coupon, etc). Then, the manager came over, and helped even more! In the end, the package ended up being just slightly less than what I'd considered at other stores, despite the frames initially being a lot pricier. How awesome is that? I spoke with a third person today, as I returned to pay for the frames and order contacts. He was also helpful and friendly (and had a collection of nerdy tattoos, yay). I won't have the glasses for another week, but so far I'm super-happy with the folks at D/Vision! Update: Received the glasses quickly, and they're perfect. Thanks, D/Vision! Update 2: Continue to like D/Vision, though there is one guy who is an arrogant dick. I stopped trying to convince him that YES, I really DID want the contacts I was asking for and just bought the ones he decided I wanted so I could get away from him faster. as soon as I walked in here I knew it wasn't going to be like any other eye doc i'd been to before. I was offered a drink (beer, wine, tea, etc.) and filled out some quick paperwork before being seen by the optometrist after only a short wait. the exam was great. she explained throughout the screening what she was doing, what purpose each test was serving, and what adjustments she was seeing in my prescription. it was great having someone walk you through the process rather than just treating you like a test subject. the process of selecting my frames was also wonderful. the staff is very helpful and attentive. they spent over 20 minutes with me looking over the various options in the store, and in the end i settled on a great pair. they also took the time to explain what things are good to look for in a pair of frames, what to notice about they fit your face, etc. all in all, this is my favorite experience at an optometrist by far. :) i would give them a sixth star if i could. read more

Sight is one of only five senses, so it's probably not a good idea to scrimp on your eyewear. Luckily you won't have that problem at D/Vision Optical, where one of the best selections of designer eyewear anywhere commands a hefty price. Pair after pair, the glasses the Brian and his colleagues have picked out for me never fail to elicit compliments in any setting. My prescription is really strong (-10.5), and the bridge of my nose is high and wide; together these make it very hard to find frames that fit and look good. I've visited every high-end optician in Chicago over the past month, and the only place that didn't try to talk me into inappropriate frames was D/Vision. Brian managed to find a couple frames that actually might work for me. But D/Vision doesn't take insurance, and VSP will barely reimburse me if I go out of network, so I probably won't be buying anything here. read more

So my regular eye doctor just informed me that D/Vision gave me different lenses than he prescribed. The last time I saw my eye doctor was four years ago. So I have been walking around for 4 years wondering why it was that I had to take my glasses off in order to see fine print. I thought it was just a natural deterioration as I got older. I've been a customer at D/Vision since 2009, and I travel from the SW burb of Oak Lawn to shop there. They have a very unique collection of frames from top designers, they're MASTER stylists and haven't let me down yet. The whole staff is great and they often consult with one another as to what looks best on me. Year after year, I get loads of compliments on my glasses. They accept my VSP Insurance, so I get new frames annually. Not inexpensive, but you definitely get what you pay for! YOU'RE PUTTING THESE THINGS ON YOUR FACE... they need to "WORK" for you! read more

Over 5 pairs of glasses, I've never bought a pair of glasses here that I didn't love, and my prescription has never been wrong. The sales people have never made feel rushed, and they definitely have better taste than me, and give good advice. Travis Park is the best optometrist I've had, and will take his time to answer any questions. It's not cheap, but worth it. By far the best I've been to in my 20 years of wearing frames. The staff is amazing, so welcoming, and the selection is unbeatable. I've been in several times for repairs and they're just as helpful knowing I'm not there to purchase. I can't tell who likes visiting more, me or my dog. This place is a little pricey, but they have a nice selection. I got my eye exam there and the doctor was excellent. I pointed out a few frames that seemed like my style and they pulled a few others that they thought I might like. Once they could tell which styles I was liking and which I styles I wasn't liking, they were helpful in narrowing down the selection. They were done in roughly the timeframe they said they would be (they were delayed a bit by some sort of problem at the plant, but they left a message telling me about the delay), and they were very good about making sure they fit well once I went to pick them up. read more

I love this place! The staff here is so amazingly helpful. When I'm trying to find new frames it can be a kinda awful experience. As far as frames are conserned, I 'm incredibly picky and I also have terrible vision, so my experience is usually me with my nose against a mirror hoping the glasses look okay. The staff here picks out frames based on your face shape and coloring etc.. and they are honest! I feel so much more comfortable and confident about my choice with their assistance. read more

Awesome shop with great selection and untouchable customer service. I've picked up a few pairs from them over the years and have always enjoyed a great experience. Recently though, I brought in a pair I'd purchased after they got mangled and were essentially ruined. Michelle was excellent in helping me out, going as far as calling the manufacturer to get extra parts so she could fix the discontinued model herself.
