Fast forward 6 months (I never used the fireplace during the 6 months) and I was converting to gas logs. The gas fireplace company said I needed a chimney inspection and cleaning. I told them I had it 6 months ago - but I needed a new one. Fine. I used a different company to inspect the chimney and do some brick work. I saw the photos of the debris on the shelf and inside the chimney!! The other company removed Half of a 5 gallon bucket of debris. And they showed me a nail or screw one damper that was not secured during the first cleaning. So I am very disappointed - did JCS even do anything? Oh, and I paid double to JCS rather than the second company for the same services. TLDR: I do not recommend JCS

I booked an appointment with Winston's chimney service for a sweep of my chimney. I had to wait over two weeks for an appointment, but when the day finally came the team came within the appointment window (towards the end, but with a few minutes to space). I asked for them to sweep the chimney and provide an estimate to have the wood stove insert removed and our fireplace converted to a standard fireplace. The sweep probably knows what he's talking about and what he sees, but after a few minutes he described in a disjointed manner all of the potential problems with a brick chimney. He was not able to convey exactly the state of my chimney nor able to show me photos of the current state. It felt like someone trying to dance around showing what is really going on with the plan to upsell loads of work, whether necessary or not. After an hour or so he said he would get me an estimate by the end of the day. The estimate arrived, it did not include the one thing I had asked for, the price to remove the insert and convert it to a standard fireplace. It did include $20k worth of major work that I have no idea is founded or excessive. In the end, I don't even know if they swept the chimney, I have a sneaking suspicion they did not. I did not receive an invoice nor receipt for a sweep, which was the primary visit for the service call. Maybe we need that work, I truly cannot say that I have any confidence in their assessment nor appetite for that scale of work without better communication and evidence.

After servicing it, they failed to put the logs back correctly and left the flue closed. Within hours, soot blew throughout our entire house. Black soot covered walls, ceilings, upholstery, linens, and furniture in nearly every room. The damage was catastrophic. We had to go through our homeowners insurance because the cleanup costs exceeded $60,000. The restoration required professional soot remediation, sealing and repainting walls, cleaning all upholstery and fabrics, and extensive cleaning throughout the entire home. What made this even worse was the company's response afterward. They would not provide the business owner's information or their business insurance information, and they took absolutely no responsibility for the damage caused by their work. We were left to handle the nightmare ourselves.
