They did not clean up after themselves, broke my George Foreman grill (did not replace or apologize), and did not properly install my tub/shower. I do not recommend him to anybody at all. Both of my shower faucets and the kitchen sink were not providing cold water. I thought it might have been the Navien tankless unit. Frederick started by telling me everything the installing plumber did wrong. I asked him to just fix what was wrong. He fixed the kitchen sink, semi-fixed one of the faucets - said he had to replace the aerator - and assessed the other shower faucet. He returned several days later to replace the aerator. I reminded him of the second shower faucet. I could tell he was tired and was just squeezing me into the end of his day. However, in doing so, he did not properly address the issue with the second shower and I still don't have adequate hot water. read more

Nice guy, but did not seem competent and was very overpriced. Troubleshooting took forever and he kept changing what was wrong. Tired to sell me a capacitor and overcharged the compressor. He wanted to charge $198. Next technician charged only $89 and identified the problem. He also offered his discounted price of $1500 to install the new compressor and coil, but I got both installed for $700. I can't recommend him based on my experience. read more

Frederick was a real pro - we'd definitely recommend. A few weeks ago our new water heater started showing an error code. After days of no hot water and trying to find someone who would service it in DC, we found Frederick. He was responsive and made time to fit the urgent call into his schedule. I appreciated that he took the time to understand the problem before showing up to make sure it was something he was actually qualified to resolve. We needed to install a new water heater due to improper venting. Frederick provided me with options on how to address the issue and did fantastic work installing a tankless system, removing the old tank system, and patching holes left by the old system. I have a Navien tankless hot water heater. You can only use plumbers who are certified by Navien. Non-certified plumbers do not really understand how a Navien tankless hot water heater works. I made the mistake of having a non-certifed plumber come fix my problem. After paying too much, the problem was not solved. I called Navien and got on their website to get a list of certified plumbers and I found Charles & Sons. Fredrick Charles was responsive, and he took the time to explain the problems to me. He also communicated clearly with me, in an easy way - by text. It was not cheap but I am now learning that tankless hot water heaters are like computers - complicated. Nevertheless, Charles & Sons knows what they are doing. They have my business. read more

My air conditioner stopped working in September. I got several estimates and went with Charles & Sons to replace it. The replacement required replacing the condenser unit on the roof of a 3-story row house in DC with NO easy access. Frederick figured a way to get the job done, even purchasing a new hoist to get the old unit off and the new one on the roof. The inside unit is in a very tight space in a laundry closet. He figured a way to replace the coils, which entailed removing and replacing pipes. He found an issue with the furnace exhaust that he fixed for no charge. He and his co-worker took many more hours than they had bargained for to the get the job done right. Frederick is very honest, a great communicator, and a determined and hard worker. During the process of getting the condenser installed on the roof, they damaged a couple slate tiles on an outside staircase. Before I was aware, they pointed it out to me, and fixed it within a couple days, installing new slate. The new thermostat he installed very late on a Friday after working for hours did not work so he came back on Saturday morning with a new unit and installed it and then worked with me later on facetime to set it up. While the job took longer than expected, much of that was beyond his control. Due to COVID, many parts are backordered. He kept me posted throughout the runup to the installation. I would use Charles & Sons without hesitation for any future job I have, and highly recommend them to anyone needing the service they offer. Their fees are highly competitive. read more
