I have been a property manager in DC for many years and have used Rooftop Chimney for over 15 years. Their service has always been excellent, which is why I've remained a loyal customer. However, my recent experience has been very disappointing. Back in July, I contacted their office to schedule inspections for 40+ chimneys. I was told someone would call me back. After waiting, I followed up again in August and received the same response--that I would get a call back. Only today, after months of waiting, did someone finally reach out, just to tell me that it's now too late in the season and they can only book me for the off-season in 2026. After more than a decade of great service, this lack of follow-through and responsiveness has been frustrating and surprising. I hope Rooftop Chimney can improve their communication and scheduling process moving forward. read more

Bad business practice or a scam? The technician who arrived to clean my chimney was fine, he arrived slightly outside the window but was courteous. However, our chimney was never cleaned. He shared that there were cracks and recommended purchasing an insert device or having the chimney lined. While he did not clean, we were still charged the full cleaning fee, which in theory would be credited toward future work. It has been 3 weeks and I have e mailed 3 times. The business is unresponsive. It seems like they just took the cleaning money and ran- scam or bad business practice? hard to tell. read more

** Review and rating updated after follow up from contractor: Rooftop Chimney Sweeps came to my house for a routine cleaning/inspection of my 14-year old masonry chimney. They did a poor job cleaning and presented pictures of my unswept chimney as evidence that it was too dangerous to use. They also said my chimney was in "violation of code", and had exterior water damage among other problems. They proposed a $9,000 steel liner project as remedy. I subsequently had another company clean my chimney. After a proper cleaning, visual inspection inside-out revealed no "code violations", no exterior concerns, and some patches of remaining creosote deposit. They said the chimney was fine to use and recommended creosote treatment logs between cleanings to loosen remaining patches. This contrasting opinion left the impression that Rooftop Chimney exaggerated to sell me on a pricey project that I don't need. After posting my original review, Rooftop Chimney followed up to re-explain their concerns. I now appreciate that they may have a more conservative view on when creosote is a hazard and how to remedy. While reasonable people can disagree, I still don't like how they exaggerated some of the things other than the creosote and that they did a poor job cleaning. In addition to following up, Rooftop offered to "make it right" which I appreciated but I am more comfortable moving forward with another provider. Our AC/furnace company recommended them when we had some water dripping from our gas furnace exhaust pipe. We don't have an actual "chimney", just a metal exhaust pipe with a small hole in the top that was letting water get in during heavy rains. They were able to come out and replace the top so no more leak. They were on time, friendly, did a great job, and followed all COVID protocols. The only slightly annoying thing was their need to rent scaffolding which doubled the cost of the job. You'd think they'd use it often enough to have that in house rather than renting it. Hopefully I don't have any issues for a long time but I'll definitely use them again. read more

I highly recommend Rooftop. We initially had them out to do an inspection of our fireplace/chimney at our newly purchased home. It turned out that the chimney was not installed correctly, and the entire chimney plus fireplace needed to be replaced! (I called another company for a second opinion which confirmed need for replacement.) The Rooftop staff answered all of my questions and were very responsive. Ultimately, they got the job done in about 4 days (could have been even faster but for a snowstorm). Even on a day when bad weather was expected, they came and worked the couple of hours before the snow started falling, and brought staff from far away to ensure the job got done. In fact, when I had a separate company come out to rebuild the fireplace mantel, Rooftop staff immediately responded to my phone call to ensure they weren't building too close to the fireplace. They looked at photos and went through the manual, and even reached out to the manufacturer. Not everything went perfectly smoothly; for example, a technician left one of the ceramic panels in the alley and a car ran over it, and so the panel had to be re-ordered (they gave me a temporary one until that came in). While there were some hiccups like this, they were committed to getting it done right and came out as soon as the parts came in. Andrew, our technician, called/texted to say he could come a little bit earlier or could keep to our scheduled appointment. He came masked and had covers for his shoes for COVID-19 safety protocol. He was very professional and efficient. At the end of our appointment, I already got the chimney inspection report in my inbox and he left everything clean and tidy. I called them to fix the damper on my chimney. They came out did an inspection and said I needed to make $15,000 in repairs. Which, of course is ridiculous especially since I just had the chimney inspected and serviced a few years ago. I asked them to show me what codes were being violated, and they just sent me a very generic code description that the the firebox needed to be properly sealed. Then I got several high-pressure sales calls asking when they should come out to make the repairs. Never got that damper fixed by them and I'm out $300-something just for the inspection. read more

We had an appointment set for Friday, August 12th @8am to have our cap repaired (under warranty) and to have our Chimney waterproofed due to excessive water hitting the bricks due to our roofline (which we also had fixed at Rooftop Chimney Sweeps' suggestion). At 9am, I called asking where the technician was. I was told that I would be contacted shortly by the technician with an arrival time. At 11am, I called again, asking where the technician was. I told RCS that I understand things happen, emergencies arise, and if we have to reschedule that's fine. But there should be some kind of communication with me, the waiting customer. I was assured I would be contacted shortly and was transferred to the scheduling manager's voicemail (Melissa I believe) where I left a similar message asking someone to contact me and tell me what's going on and whether we need to reschedule. At 1pm, I called again, asking why nobody has reached out to me yet, the technician hasn't showed up, and this is getting ridiculous. This time, the receptionist put me on hold to speak directly to Melissa and figure out what was going on so I wouldn't have to call back. The receptionist was fantastic. She informed me that something had happened with the technician this morning and two separate people were under the impression the other had already called me and I had unfortunately gotten lost in the confusion. I was then assured that Melissa (the scheduling manager) would call me back within the next few minutes. At 3pm I called again, after not hearing from anybody. The receptionist apologized profusely for the lack of communication and wasting my time. I gave up for the day and hoped someone would call me after the weekend. On Monday August 15th, either I called or RCS called, and we scheduled just the cap repair (not the waterproofing anymore) for Tuesday the 16th at 11am - 1pm. To be clear, I explicitly said we didn't want to do the waterproofing anymore during the phone call and the receptionist indicated that she had made a note in the system to remove this work. A little later, I got an email saying we were scheduled for Tuesday the 16th at 9am - 11am. I called back immediately and told them "no, we're scheduled for 11am - 1pm, why am I getting emails with the wrong time?!?" On Tuesday, August 16th, I believe RCS called around 11am to inform me that the technician would be arriving within 30 minutes to do the cap repair and the waterproofing. I then reminded the receptionist that we had already cancelled the waterproofing and that I refused to pay this company any money at the moment given this debacle but would reconsider in a couple of weeks since the waterproofing would be a good idea to get done in general. The receptionist indicated that she understood and would send a text message directly to the technician that was on his way to our house so that he would be aware that the waterproofing was to be skipped. When the technician arrived, he announced that he was here to do the cap repair and waterproofing. I had to tell him to skip the waterproofing. This is among the worst series of communications I have ever had with a home maintenance / repair / improvement company. To this day, almost 2 weeks later, I have not received any call from Melissa or any managers at RCS explaining or apologizing for the communication breakdown. The management has treated me, a customer for 6 years, like complete garbage. The receptionist staff was between helpful and extraordinary (different people). The technicians have been very knowledgeable and honest and fair. However, the salesman for the waterproofing was pushy (my personal opinion, others may have seen it differently). Additionally, management is completely unresponsive. If you treat all your customers like this, you won't have any customers left. I am done with this place. If they value me so little they can't even send a text, email, or return a phone call with something as succinct as "there's a problem with the technician, we'll have to reschedule", then they don't deserve my business or my money. Our technician, Will, came right on time and did a really thorough job of inspecting our chimney. We had it cleaned two winters ago, and had originally booked him to clean ours this year as well, but he said we didn't need it. I really appreciated his honesty since I have no technical knowledge of chimneys myself. He also told us all about our flue and dampener and walked us through things to watch for/know about our specific chimney. We obtained quotes from 4 other area chimney sweeps and every single one of them insisted that the chimney would have to be relined at a cost of about $5,000+ and that no way, no how could it just be cleaned and be safe to use. So this is an update from the situation from earlier. I contacted them through Yelp's application / project requester. Initially Michelle asked me for my address and if my system was oil, gas, or wood burning. Then I didn't hear from them until I posted the one star review. After I posted the review Michelle reached out to me to apologize and take ownership for the mistake and to offer me a quote for the chimney cap, and to set up a time for the technician to come out, as well as offering to waive the inspection fee (which included diagnosis and pictures of the exterior and interior of the chimney). Michelle was great about working with me through the messenger and text messaging and set up a date. Today the technician came out, and called as he was running a little early so he called to see if he could come by early. When he did, they went to our furnace / water heater area. Wilfredo was able to explain the answer and reasoning to some questions we had, and then went up to the chimney, did some inspection and then put the cap on as requested. They were quick and seemed to work carefully. After the cap installation was done Wilfredo was able to come down and explain to me in plain language what was going on with the inspection. He did a great job of explaining to me what he saw, and what he thought needed to happen, as well recommended order of repairs. The conversation with Wilfredo was great and he was able to make everything very understandable, event o someone who isn't familiar with chimneys and the equipment that goes with it. After Wilfredo left I deiced to send Michelle a message to praise how quick and easy Wilfredo was to work with. Looking back over the messages, I saw that I had forgotten to mention that Michelle offered to waive the inspection price. When I mentioned it to Michelle in the compliment I sent, there was an immediate offer to have the amount refunded. I really appreciate how responsive Michelle has been to me, even in offering to refund the amount of the inspection, after the fact. This is the 3rd time we've used Rooftop. Once was for a pre-purchase chimney inspection and once for a chase replacement. Both experiences were very good. Had another good experience with Grant. He called when he was about 15 minutes away, was prompt, efficient, and thorough. Be ready to spend some serious money if they recommend any repairs. Which I assume they will absolutely do. I had Rooftop Chimney over for a backdraft/smoking problem. Customer service and their employees are pleasant to deal with, so that's the three stars. After spending $2500.00 to see if their interior brick patching, ripping out the cast iron damper and adding a top damper cap might do the trick, it did not. Their experiment did not work so they wanted to proceed with over $4500.00 in additional repairs and a chimney lining. I was out of money and patience so I ultimately I bought a $20 electric heat fan that solved my problem. Still upset that I paid so much money. This was all pre-covid but I'll still say please get a second opinion if you have any doubts. read more

I heard from Dylan, one of the owners, and he provided a detailed explanation of the chain of events associated with the experience. It appears there was an internal discussion about the diagnosis that was not provided. Three technicians, that included first line management, that disagreed on the final diagnosis. It was decided to error on the side of replacement out of an abundance of caution. During the senior leadership review, it was determined the system should have been deemed functional as a result of the original inspection. Dylan provided an assurance the overall process workflow and how conflicting opinions on a diagnosis like this will be handled differently in the future. This company made a great deal of mistakes throughout the process of scheduling and performing work, but the senior leadership appears to want to build a great company. The example employees follow is the one provided from leadership, and this was likely a case where there needs to be more checks and balances in place. Dylan committed to doing the best he can to make those changes. Further, in an attempt to make the experience right he plans to refund his fees and that of the company that provided an alternate opinion--over $300. In closing, the consumer must be determined to gain the truth about a diagnosis. If a company asked you to spend $13,000 on a full system replacement, make sure there is a second opinion to keep everyone honest, spread-out technical knowledge and competing bias. This company didn't meet the mark but hopefully they will change their workflow and add checks/balances that will keep these circumstances from happening in the future. Just know, Dylan will make it right if you have a bad experience. Additionally, know his goal is to provide the best customer experience and technical skills possible to the community. I elevated the rating one star given the overall experience was terrible, required a great deal of effort to resolve but was impressed by the company's potential given their leadership. It doesn't feel good but rating the experience any higher is not a proper representation of the experience even when costs are refunded. The true cost exceeded the planned refunded amount. I got up on a three-story high roof to check the work of professionals--likely not too smart--and exceeded what I should have been required to do. read more

Jaliq and Grant came to figure out why our woodstove is backing up smoke when we try to use it. There was clear and frequent communication from the company leading up to the visit. They set an arrivel date with an arrival window of 3 hrs. I even got a text of a photo of Jaliq the day of the visit with the company contact number so I would know he was from there, even though they arrived in the company truck. Rooftop Chimney Sweeps thought of everything. They took great care and were very thorough. They figured out exactly what was needed and will send me a comprehensive report with photos from the inside and outside of the chimney. The visit was a reasonable cost which was set beforehand. No extra fees ( until and unless we need more services that may be suggested in the follow up report). I recommend Jaliq and Grant highly as extremely professional and thorough. read more

However right out of box wanted me to buy $6000 insert I told them all I wanted to do was replace old gas logs and repair gas line. So the quote came back as $3000 $750 to install at most 2' of copper, $500 for logs,$1300 for burner, WHAT WHAT!? Is everything plated in gold! Don't waste your money. Had an appointment for a Level 2 inspection. The technician came took 5 photos of the outside and charged $200. When I told him that it wasn't a Level 2 inspection he said the Level 1 was the same cost. I called about getting a second quote on having our chimney crown repaired, a very nice gentleman came out to take pictures and I received a quote for $500 to complete the repair I asked for, as well as another $1,000 of other recommended work. I called to schedule the chimney crown repair only and after playing phone tag for over a week with several people, someone called to tell me that to just get the work I asked for would now be closer to $700 because I wasn't getting the other work they recommended. Do not use this company. Total cons. I thought there was a block in my chimney because my hvac exhaust vent had water vapor building up, causing rust that ultimately went back into the hvac electronics box. Their technician came out and told me that my chimney liner collapsed and needed to be replaced for $8k. I asked him to put the camera scope up the chimney so I could see (which I paid for), but was told that he couldn't do that because it would tear my liner even worse. I know nothing about chimneys so I believed him. Fortunately I decided to get a second opinion just to make sure. Turns out there was nothing wrong with my chimney at all. The air wasn't venting properly because the first few feet of tubing (from my hvac not the chimney) wasn't made from the right material. I had the part replaced for a couple of hundred bucks and haven't had an issue since. If I had listened to their technician, I wOuld have spent $8k and the issue would still not have been resolved. I likely would have then gone down the path of having to replace my whole hvac. It's unbelievable to me that the technician would be that scummy. Not only would I have paid thousands of dollars for what was only a small issue, but my infant daughter (who he saw) would have been without heat for weeks. Do not use This company read more

Hired for a cleaning and inspection. Went to them based on Yelp reviews after first option (that charged approximately half for the same service) was not available to schedule at my location as soon. I was OK with that since their price seemed like it still may be reasonable for the area. Crew arrived very punctually, were professional, careful, and did a good job with the cleaning. Visual report given after the service and also watched the video feed as they stuck the gopro up the flue. Also provided some knowledge on how to work the specific damper on a new-to-us fireplace, which was nice. At least three stars is absolutely deserved. With that said, I also kind of felt like I signed up for a sales pitch rather than an inspection. Galvanized chimney cap showed some mild surface rust (no holes, still fully seals flue top, fully functional). Solution, brand new cap at 186$. New caps cost around $50 and installation is literally tightening 4 screws (the old cap had to be removed to do the inspection). One crack in crown bed, entire surface needs to be re-sealed (this repair seemed reasonable). Chimney Flue condition: smoke box fine, tiles not cracked, damper/firebox good, mortar partially missing from a few tiles is only issue. Solution: over 3 grand to completely replace tile lining with brand new stainless steel one. Could not determine from the conversation if this was a major cause for concern, or simply a maintenance item that can be deferred or monitored to see if it becomes a concern. I went in hoping to find out if a fireplace I had never used was (as best as can be predicted), reasonably safe to burn a fire in. I don't expect a guarantee, but a reasonable assessment from a professional. Went out hearing that it is "not up to standards" with no useful information. Kind of like going to a car repair shop and getting the "is my car safe to drive?" question answered with "well, your tires aren't brand new so it isn't up to standards." That may be perfectly fine for some people. However, I find a lot more value in a service that leaves me feeling like my interests are at heart rather than commission opportunities. For me, I definitely received a good value for the cleaning portion of my service with Rooftop. Will I hire them again vs trying another service next year? Unlikely. Edit: Owner called immediately in line with comment below. Gave a clear, detailed explanation on the impacts of mortar gaps like I described above, the context of why they matter, and the potential dangers. Offered to refund the service which was not at all expected. Also took some time to explain why alternative repair options (than replacing with stainless) would cost similar amounts (or more) and why the end result would not be as good, and ways to time/schedule it if it something that needs to be put off down the road. I scheduled with Rooftop Chimney Sweeps based on the reviews. I had an appointment at 8am with a window of arrival of 8-8:30am...8:50, no one, so I called. Was told there was a scheduling mix up and asked if I could do 9-11am, keep in mind it is 9am at this point. Was told to expect a call 30 minutes prior to arrival...10:51am a text saying the tech was on his way. At 11am, still no technician, so I called again. While on the phone the tech called and told me he was 30 minutes out. I have now been waiting since 8am...I will say there were some attempts to reschedule, however given the issue revolved completely around scheduling, I was unwilling to risk waiting another 5 hours for nothing read more
