Excellent food, especially for the price. The service, on the other hand has gotten so terrible in recent months that I can no longer support this business, at least on Sundays. Last time I ordered 30 minutes in advance, then when I walked in they told me five minutes. Another 30 minutes went by and I just walked out. At one point I was called up by mistake and when I pointed out that it wasn't my order, the guy walked off without giving me any information or an apology. This was the second week in a row that it happened. It's one thing to be busy on a weekend at dinnertime, I understand that. But at least offer the guests water if the food is going to take over an hour to prepare. I feel terribly to have to put down the service like this for an otherwise amazing restaurant but I really hope this review gets the attention of whomever is in charge of employing the serving staff. read more

D'Cuba Restaurant is located on Fullerton, and some people say this is one of the best Cuban restaurants in the city. I'd say it is pretty good, with a pleasantly cozy interior. My love and I recently dined here as part of a surprise birthday party gathering. Someone in our group knows the owner, so everything ran smoothly during our dining experience. We noshed on family-sized platters of food including Cuban favorites such as ropa vieja, arroz con gandules, tostones, yuca with garlic sauce, lechon, shrimp, black beans and more. The Cuban food here is amazing! I love that they are a small restaurant. They really know their customers. I come here every two weeks with my colleagues who are also teachers. The lady who is the hostess and waitress (I have to get her name). is ver cordial and sweet. They will usually have our food ready for lunch time if we call in the orders ahead of time. We come early for the "daily lunch special". I have never had a a bad dish here. The food is home made and incredibly flavorful. I'm a huge fan for many years to come. read more

I believe this is the best Cuban food in Chicago and I have eaten at every Cuban restaurant in Chicago and many in Miami and many private homes. This is authentic Cuban home cooking. The service is slow but I believe that it is understaffed. The biggest complaint is that they close much too early for people who work and want to go out to eat after working and even the Sunday hours at too early. I was there this week and now they are taking cash only which is not a problem for me because I do carry some cash but many people today do not and I am sure the business will suffer. I want my comments to be constructive because the food is great and the prices and portions are very fair. So if you can go early and want great Cuban food go to D'Cuba. read more

Omg where was this hidden gem all these years?? We came recommended by a Cuban friend. The food is amazing, on point, well seasoned and delicious! Get the appetizer for 2 it's so good and the ropa Vieja was rich, the fish had this amazing red sauce you can eat it by itself, it came With rice and beans and maduros. Did I say large portions? Decided to go here based on a friend's recommendation bc it's a BYOB w/o corkage fee .... it's a family owned and run place is small, service is slow bc of limited staff, most common plates are already made; you can tell because for example I ordered the rice congri and ropa vieja (Black rice and shredded beef) and I had to ask them to put it in the microwave.. they tasted good though... parking too is limited ... nothing spectacular but if you are looking for a BYOB and a home cook meal give it a try ... Came here with a travelzoo special. $29 for an appetizer, 2 entrees, 2 desserts, and 2 mojitos. Appetizer: shrimp ceviche w/ fried plaintains - a smart idea serving it with fried plaintains, but there wasn't enough for the big bowl of ceviche. The ceviche was extremely sour and that's all I tasted. Entree 1: me, pallomilla encebollada (steak and grilled onions) - love that it came with a lot of grilled onions, however, the steak was a bit rough, has decent flavor though. Entree 2: bf, carne asada (grilled skirt steak) - hmmmMmmmm this was cooked to perfection. Medium rare at its finest! Very flavorful, but it would be nice if the onions were also grilled instead of raw. (Definitely will ask for grill onions next time!) Dessert 1: tres leche cake - super sweet Dessert 2: coco flan - this is very good, more on the dense side Mojitos: they were wayyyy too minty. I understand that's what mojitos are made of, but when you are choking on the mint than there definitely is too much! We didn't want to throw it out so we chugged it. This is a 3.5 star review based on a 3 from the husband and a 4 from me. We came in on a Saturday night around 6:30 or so and were surprised that there weren't more people there. We ordered the sampler plate for two which came with 4 tostones, 1 empanada (beef) 2 croquettas (1 chicken and 1 ham) and a ground beef potato ball. All was delicious and we were excited for the main meals. One note - it does take a while to get served - indicating they are really cooking this stuff to order, which is good! Husband went with the baked pork chops - 2 huge pork chops about an inch thick arrived along with black beans and rice and plantains. I went with the breaded skirt steak and the cuban rice (which just seems like the black beans and white rice mixed up together and heated...) and plantains. I liked the white rice better, I am afraid, but the steak was good. Husband did not like that the pork chops were so thick and only made it through one before he was stuffed. The price point is slightly higher than other places in the area (Senor Pan, for one), so I guess I can see why the place isn't crowded since this area is not going to support a place that charges $12-$15 for a main dish. I would come back and try the shrimp or red snapper for sure, but I'm not sure the husband will be up for it when he knows he likes other places more. And, parking is horrible. There is nothing on Fullerton and the side streets are completely full with the residents who live there - we drove around for ten minutes to find something. read more

I came here because I bought a Travelzoo voucher. I will not be coming back. We drove up to the place and it looked like a hole in the wall and it had only 2 occupied tables on a Saturday night. We ordered 2 homemade sangrias, D' Cuba combination ( 2 personas incluye 2 croquetas de jamon o pollo. 1 empanada (no cangrejo) 1 papa rellena, 4 tostones y yuca frita ), El Típico (Grilled pork, Black Cuban rice and yuca w/mojo), Ropa vieja / Old Clothes (Shredded beef in tomato sauce with onion, green and red peppers, Flan de vanilla (vanilla custard) Sangrias: filled with fresh fruit and was actually very good D'Cuba combination appetizer: the sausage looking thing was okay, dry and eh. The tostones were pretty good, but still pretty darn dry. The potato ball thing was actually pretty good! The puff thing we didn't even try.. It just didn't look appetizing. El Tipico: the pork pieces were half fat and half meat... I had to cut off a loooot of my meat, it was soooo much fat! Wtf? The rice wasn't bad, the meat in it was a bit overdone. The yaca w/mojo was pretty disgusting..mooshy, flavorless, just ick. Ropa vieja: the translation of the name of the dish for sure describes the taste of this whole dish! Old clothes! The meat was not chewable, my bf felt like a cow endlessly chewing the first piece of meat he tried! He gave me a small piece to try and I was chewing for a long time! The rice was very very dry.. The whole dish was not edible so pretty much the whole dish was not touched.. Wait no. He ate the grilled peppers! Flan de vanilla: after a couple of tries neither the bf nor I wanted to touch it, sweet, but slimy (I know it usually is but it was not edible slimy) . Just not good. Had the best Cubano I have had in a long time. Such a sweet little restaurant, lovely wait staff, generous portions. $26 for two sandwiches( included rice, beans and fried plantain chips) 2 appraisers and a sprite. It was my second time at this restaurant and I will for sure be back. To the people saying service is too slow...you must not have grown up with or around Cuban cuisine. Take a chill pill and relax, embrase the Cuban lifestyle and be on island time while you enjoy a taste of someone else's culture, even if only for a minute. I found this place thru restaurant.com I wasn't expecting too much since the neighborhood doesn't have very nice restaurants. Surprisingly they have amazing food I've been here about 7 times since. The ropa vieja is delicious and great portions. It comes with sweet plantains. My BF ordered the jibarito and he loved how tender the steak is. This Cuban spot was okay for me, nothing out of the ordinary. Simply because I was born in Chicago, but most of my life I've been in Miami so I know authentic Cuban food when I see it, and this didn't really cut it. I don't take away from the obvious fact that Cubans aren't really seen in Chicago, so I can understand why it didn't taste authentic to me. A lot was missing from the menu that I would see at traditional Cuban spots but I made due with what was on the menu. We had the little toasted bread slices with butter (tostadas) as an entry before ordering which was perfect because that's probably my favorite thing at any Cuban restaurant . I ordered the ropa vieja with white rice and beans, my brother ordered a pollo empalizado also with white rice and black beans. My aunt ordered a shrimp fajita (not sure how this collaborates with a Cuban style restaurant) with morro rice. We also had yuca and papa rellena passed around as appetizers. The food tasted great! The service given by our sneaky sly waitress knocked off a star. It's sad when your employees give your establishment a bad rep. We were over charged (charged 2X for appetizers) and had to deal with smirky remarks from the waitress. Either she truly doesn't know how to add or she is robbing this place of clients. We found this place thru http://Restaurant.com, so we changed our plans and came here instead of La Parrilla on Irving Park. We dined on a Friday night. Place was empty except for the waitress and her friend. No one rushed over, apparently a great conversation was taking place. When the staff finally came over, I was greeted, and asked if this was my first time here. "Yep" I replied. My wife and I ordered Mojitos. Not bad, but made with sprite, so we didn't order a second. I love tostones, and my wife loves empanadas. They had both on the menu, but for the price, we could get the platter, which included both, plus a fried potato/meat ball, yuca fries, and ham and cheese Croquettes. All fried, but all was tasty with the 2 dipping sauces. We ordered the apps, since we needed to meet our purchase price minimum to take advantage of the http://restaurant.com deal. We then ordered two of the 'Chef's Favorites' El Habanero & the El Tipico. The Habenero was just M'eh, having the same meat that was in the fried potato ball, so we were over it pretty quickly. The Tipioco was just that, Typical...nothing out of this world, but it did the trick and we were stuffed. Price was good, plenty of food. Ambiance - none. There was no one in there on a Friday nite. 2 other couples showed up to dine while we were there, and someone came in to set up a keyboard near the door. It's so nice to finally have a nice latin restaurant in the area that isn't necessarily a dive. Don't get me wrong... some of those other "dives" have decent food, but sometimes you just want to enjoy your meal at a nice place with table service. While D'Cuba isn't a huge restaurant, it is rather classy. You don't have to be all dressed up for it but, if you are, you won't feel uncomfortable. The food is quite good. I've gone several times with my entire family. Everyone has ordered something different and has always been satisfied with their Cuban dish. Actually, we've ordered so many items that I can't really narrow it down... it's all been good. I haven't heard any complaints. In fact, my mom came home one day with the strangest compliment for them... she loved their water!! She kept raving about how good it was. She even asked the server and I guess they serve some type of filtered water. It was just funny to hear my mom rave about a restaurant's water... goes to show that even the little things count. My boyfriend and I came here on a Travelzoo coupon and two things happened: 1) We stuffed our faces to the point where, after proverbially unbottoning my top pants button, I wished I had another one to unbutton 2) Knew we had to tell our friends all about it Of all the Cuban food I've ever had, the food here had the best flavor for the best value (even if we'd paid full price). I've eaten at fancy Cuban places and holes-in the wall, and this was somewhere in between. The decor feels very dated and very rather unmatched to the tasty morsels you're about to eat, but that's not really the reason you make the trek out west to this place. It really is about the food, of which we had zero gripes. The chicken empanadas and chicken croquetas (chicken seemed to be the only option available that night, but did not disappoint) were perfectly cooked, the marinated meat in the empanada being especially flavorful. I ordered the whole red snapper ("Are you sure? It still has eyes," warned the waitress. I loved it.) was remarkable, entirely moist, crispy, and expertly prepared. My boyfriend's ropa vieja was the ropa vieja I had always hoped to find: not dry, not overpowered by the olive flavor, and well-balanced with its spices. His side of yuca with garlic sauce was phenomenal and my side of black beans and rice was solid, but barely touched on account of my mouth practically shutting things down for the evening. Also remarkable, the sangria: among the only properly-made sangrias I've had in this city, where the white wine actually complimented the fruit. And the flan. Holy crap, the flan. Every bite a gooey, delicate burst of vanilla with the creaminess you rarely find in such custards these days. This was no afterthought dessert. This felt like someone's secret recipe. I made room for it and I was hooked. I love this place! In my opinion and that of all the Cubans I know, this is the best Cuban restaurant in the area. The food is very good and always fresh; I've never gotten dry rice from them like some other people said they did. They do take a little longer to get things to you, but they give you this delicious garlicky bread that definitely makes up for your wait! The owner/chef is really nice too. My family goes there all the time and a lot of times he'll recommend something or send out complimentary appetizers for us to try. That rarely happens unless someone is trying to smooth over a situation, but this is just hospitality. They really know how to create loyalty in customers. I've had the Cuban sandwich, the ham croquetas, the empanadas, the papa rellena, the mariquitas, all 3 types of yuca, the maduros, the jibarito sandwich, the palomilla encebollada (steak grilled with onions), and the lechon. All of it has been really good! The only downside is that the food seems to be cooked heavy on the oil sometimes, but that's only with certain dishes and is a hit-or-miss kind of thing. The portions are huge. I went with my parents and fiancé one night and we ordered the Fiesta Cubana meant for three people, but it was so huge that we all ate and still had leftovers. It's cheap too! I wish this place was closer to my house! I went there to have a lunch with a friend of mine, and oh my! I love those banana chips, they are very yumi and the mojito was amazing. The meat was well cooked, and of course as a true Brazilian I have high expectations for rice and beans and this place met them perfectly!
