Cycleworks went Far beyond the call of duty in servicing my bottom bracket. Once Iggy started getting in there he noticed that my hubs were loose he went to work on those and then noticed my pivots were in need of attention, which he dove into as well. Sadly, a spacer went missing in the process and the whole shop got on their knees looking for it. When they couldn't find it they proceeded to grind down a spacer they had to make it work. read more

I also took in a finicky bike that has never worked right - now it does. Staff is friendly knowledgeable and down-to-earth . They really listen and offer good advice. There is no snobbism either. Honestly a terrible and sad experience here. I purchased a bike from the demo fleet believing that it would have been maintained and in good enough shape to ride. I was mistaken and was actually delivered a bike that was so far in disrepair that as soon as you stepped on the peddles the chain fell off the wheel. The chainring was so worn and missing teeth it would not grab the chain and continuously fell off. Derailleur also bent and spring broken. After all this I asked that the cost to fix the bike be covered so that I could ride and I was flat out denied and told I should have known because it was a "used" bike. SAD read more

Amazing customer service- they always find a way to take care of your needs as a customer and do it with a smile. 2. Highly recommend cycleworks as your bike shop of choice in Santa Cruz. I have rented bikes from other shops in SC and this place stands above the others in service and selection. Stifling is the owner and can answer any questions for you. Hannah was working the front today-she will make sure you get the right bike. Call ahead to see if they have the Giant ATX bikes to rent. Best option in SC. Riding a cruiser isn't worth the hassle. Best place to ride to if you are from out of town: take Bay Ave and bike along the coast to Natural Bridges State Park. I waited for Sprockets to open Friday morning with a broken rear spoke. I needed it fixed so I could keep riding and get home. They wouldn't fix it unless I could leave the bike with them overnight. I left and went to ABS down the street, which took care of me right away. They get 2 stars instead of 1 because of the employee (not the boss man) who told me to try Another BIke Shop, and thereby played a small but essential role in getting me back on the road. read more

Disclaimer - I didn't end up buying a bike there. But that's not the point. Sprockets does not seem to cater to the boy racer wanna be Lance roadie types. They are real people that love to ride and want to share that with the people that come into their shop. I tried 3 different bikes while I was there - all were darn near perfectly set up by just eyeballing me and the bike (that is skill). The differences in characteristics between the bikes were exactly as described before I rode them. I never felt pressured to buy anything from them and chatted about the differences between the bikes like we were long time friends. There was one particular bike I wanted to try that they didn't have in stock in my size, but they invited me back into the shop to check out one that they were building. While I'd never purchase a bike that isn't exactly what I want - I would be more than happy to buy from Phil and Kathy - as they are the epitome of the awesome local bike shop that need our support. read more

Rolled in here on a weekday late afternoon, and found a few models I was looking to test ride and buy. Was greeted when I entered, as Taylor (told me later he is owner) finished up with a customer. He noticed I was eyeing some rides so he asked if I wanted to take a spin. Yup. Came back and told him what I liked and he said he would have to order the size/model so he checked his computer and said he could order. Said it would take 2 days (no worries) and no shipping or assembly charges (bonus!). And he told me there is a 10% discount on all bikes (double bonus!) I can't wait for my new ride. He said I would have it time for the weekend! Sweet! We chatted a bit about bikes and his 3 years as owner so I was stoked to get to know a local shopkeeper. Just a note for fellow yelpers - this place is now under new ownership, and the guys who took over are rad. My buddy recommended I head over there, and though of course I've driven by it and stopped in once when I was in the market for a hard tail a while back, it's definitely a different store now and much improved. I had them build up and tune a nomad I bought used elsewhere and Taylor (one of the owners) took care of me and gave me a great deal. Really friendly and helpful customer service, no sales pressure, and not pretentious at all (unlike the ego's found at other local shops). You can tell these guys love to ride and are passionate about what they do. Best part is they really know their stuff - from the roadies to the cruisers to the DH'ers. I've had to deal with shops that have limited knowledge in certain areas (i.e. specialize in road biking / XC but don't really know what's what when it comes to freeride/downhill riding and maintaining a bike for that purpose), so this whole experience was very refreshing. It seems like a great place to rent from as well (based on what I observed from happy rental customers). Their selection of merchandise is improving from past years - they've replaced subpar lines with quality stuff like Norco and Raleigh and are still building up and expanding as they get settled in. I went in expecting to just get the bike built and a tune, and ended up walking out with a new Norco XC hardtail 29'er in addition as a secondary ride... whoops! I couldn't resist, and it was an excellent price. This will definitely be my go-to shop from now on, and I look forward to seeing how this place evolves over the coming years. read more

Awesome. Simply awesome. I called three other Santa Cruz shops first. One didn't open until noon, another had only a day rate, not hourly, and the third had no nearby parking (triathlon in town today). As they say, the fourth one is a charm. When Zora answers the phone, it might sound like "Laura." Either way she is marvelous. Friendly, knowledgable and genuine. It's not the name on the door, but the person who services you that makes the company what it is - a great place to get bikes! Sprockets itself is clean, well organized and amazingly stocked. Plenty of employees to help everyone on a busy, summer Sunday, without waiting more than a moment. And it seemed each one nicer than the next. They have a beautiful selection, not only bikes to rent, but purchase, of course. Accessories, goodies, all sorts of useful stuff too. Zora offered us several kinds of bikes, and when we made our selection she checked the equipment and adjusted the seats for us in a flash. The price was better than the other two shops I spoke with, and their location close enough to everything popular in Santa Cruz. The bicycles we had were wonderful. Perfectly clean, we asked if the bikes were new. Not the ones we got today, but they clean and service them after every ride. On the road in moments, I was amazed how silky smooth the Shimano shifters are. No matter what hill we took it was simply a breeze. And the handgrips thick & comfy, after several mile ride, I was not at all fatigued. We had a great ride, a fun day and look forward to coming back for more rentals. I finally found a bike shop in SC County that I can totally get behind. The owners are knowledgeable and friendly. They pay good attention to you from the minute you walk in the store. Prices seem reasonable, and they're all about getting you to do your own repairs (to the extent that they kept saying "well, you can pay us $15 to do your chain for you, or you can come watch me do one and then buy the tool to do it for $17...). Really happy with my experience there. They also love biking, and it shows. While waiting for the register to open up, the owner kept talking to me about possible trails to ride in Wilder and UCSC. He gave me lots of great ideas for my next ride! read more

Yeah, after being here a few years to try the other bike shops around town... and growing up a little. I've changed my mind about these guys. They're super helpful and help me fix some stuff and answered some questions without charging me (some other folks would have taken advantage of my lack of knowledge). Reliable guys and really nice. I wouldn't say they're cheap, but riding bikes isn't always cheap. Prices are comparable to other bike shops, but the service I get make me want to bring my bike her every time. If you want to pay less, you'd have to learn to fix your own bike :) read more

My little teenage brother has an expensive habit... mountain biking/ doing tricks on a mountain bike you should really be doing with a bmx.... there are over 234 bike shops within the Santa Cruz county and its surrounding areas... brother and I have a lot to cover. This was bike shop #40??? we have checked out... it is a nice bonding experience.....Anyways-- he is book marking this as a place to come back. when he wants to look for "sigh" another bike... at least he isn't doing drugs...... He thought this place was "cool" and the employees were "aight" teenage speak that means "they had what I needed to stock up on and the customer service was excellent." Works for me. read more

A poor shop. Beware of the repair crew in particular, they are unqualified and will not fix your bike properly. Avoid at all costs.

I went in they checked out my bike and didn't charge me, if I would have gotten the work I thought I had needed done, it would have been done next day. These guys know their stuff, don;t overcharge and they let you into the mechanics area to show you what's up, I like that, they are the type of guys you want to give a 6 pack to when you pick up your bike. If you have ever had to take your bike to a bike shop in Santa Cruz, you would know that they only hire the cantankerous. It's practically a guideline for opening up your own bike shop in the area: rule #1, only hire condescending, rude bike snobs for customer service. Sprockets is the only place in Santa Cruz where the employees are always extremely helpful, fast and efficient. This is why I always came here when I was attending UCSC, even though they are a bit more expensive than all the other bike shops. If you have ever had to deal with the local alternatives, you'll take that slightly higher price tag for the sake of better customer service at Sprockets. My reason for finally posting a rave for this establishment is because I had a triathlon last weekend in Santa Cruz. I had all my gear and drove down from the Bay Area. By the time I arrived, I realized I had forgotten my bike shoes! I wasn't about to drive all the way back up to San Francisco. Remembering Sprockets, I drove immediately there. Bike, swim and running equipment still stuffed in my trunk. I was in a small panic. Wyatt, the customer service/repairman on duty that day informed me that they didn't do bike shoe rentals. However, he came to my rescue for letting me borrow his shoes. I didn't have the right pedals for them. So he let me borrow his pedals too! He replaced the ones already on my bike and loaned me his shoes for just 15 bucks! I couldn't believe someone would go out of their way like that for a complete stranger! In summation, Sprockets will not only take care of you, they will apparently come to your rescue. Extra credit for having a small parking lot for paying customers. read more

I have lived in Santa Cruz a long time & have traded with a few of the bike shops. One of them has been this one, Sprockets. It is under a new management, with a fresh approach. They are centrally located, near Bay St. & on Mission St. Sort of off of the main travel through to UCSC. I have a few bicycles I ride constantly; from tricycle recumbents to mountain bikes. They help me keep those bikes maintained at reasonable rates, prompt courteous service. My wife, for my B-day, took a 20 year Bidgestone road bike I have & had them rejuvenate it. They did it at a fair, reasonable price & it works great; looks good too! read more

Sprockets is an awesome shop. I will not go anywhere else for parts or service. Taylor is a great guy that is always willing to help and go the extra mile. Recently I needed a set of somewhat rare Atomlab hub adapters that nobody had in stock including internet retailers. I searched everywhere for these things and could not find them which led me to believe they were discontinued. So I called sprockets and what do you know, they assured me they could get them, which they did very quickly! Today I was in a hurry to get my bike tuned up for a ride so I stopped by the shop. Taylor told me that he would need the bike for about a day to get it fixed up. I said " but I am supposed to be meeting my buddy in 30 minutes to ride!" so he replied " Then we will have the bike ready in 20 minutes!" I can not urge people enough to go to sprockets. All the employees are great guys with no bad attitudes. They have bikes and parts in stock for almost any rider and are a pleasure to do business with. Plus there prices are awesome! Too often have I seen reviews that focus on a once off exposure to a place that tells you a great deal about the immediate exposure, but don't answer a pertinent question: are they consistent? I've been going to sprockets for everything under the sun (buying bikes, selling them, maintenance, tool purchase, equipment) for the past three years. I figured at this point a review would be appropriate. From the minute I walked into Sprockets I was greeted with warmth and courtesy and no question was ever too simplistic or complex (almost always the former). Too often bike shops become the locus of pretentiousness but this is far from the case at Sprockets. A combination of high quality bikes at affordable prices is laid out without any hint of ego or pomposity. Maintenance work is always affordable and effective. I'm always surprised with the low cost when I leave. A special mention must go out to Taylor. Such a gentleman and a great face of the business. Has always been wonderful and will repeatedly seek out the best deal for me. Never about profit. As long as I'm in Santa Cruz, I will continue to drop by to Sprockets. I love the guys that work here. I've only had to come in here once or twice, but both times the employees have been incredibly helpful and kind. The first time I was in here I had gotten my first flat tire with my road bike in santa cruz and wasn't really sure how to fix it on my own (this normally falls into the category of boyfriend's responsibilities) So after taking off early from work one day, I brought my bike tire in and asked if they could show me how to fix it. I figured it would be better to learn how to fish than be fed for the day. I assume it was the owner how I asked, who was pretty busy at the time, but he got one of the boys in the back to show me how it was done and was super friendly. The best part was, even though I was asking for something so simple (and stupidly easy) they were not condescending at all. I guess everyone has to learn sometime. We were on our way for a family bike ride and realized that we had a flat tire. Stirling took care of us right away. We were in and out quickly with a new tire. I also purchased a helmet. I'm from Portland, land of bike shops, and have high expectations for work on my bikes. Sprockets nailed it. We rented bikes for the in-laws over the holidays and the cheery, helpful customer service was spot on. (No condescending digs or eye rolling.) When we extended the rental, no worries. I snapped a few spokes on my mountain bike rim and the rebuild was fast and affordable...and when that rim didn't work out (it was shot), they sold me a used one that is working great. I my only experience is with their return policy. 7 days for a refund, 30 days for store credit, beyond that nothing. So it's short, and they don't have much stock, so store credit isn't worth much. I'll go to REI where it's a year, and they stock a ton. read more

I really like Sprockets. They're a total mom and pop operation with about 4 or 5 employees total. The woman there knows me by name and is incredibly nice. They always try to find you the bargain and they always do a great job on the bike... they usuallly ride it out back a little bit to be sure. The only beef I can think of with Sprockets is that it's located at the most heinous part of the most heinous street in Santa Cruz... so every time I go there, there's that mess to deal with. But that's not nearly enough to lose a star. I think I should mention they have a lot of Treks but also a lot of Bianchi bikes too. read more

Kathy and Phil are the two owners of this bike store. Back in the late 1990s when they first opened on Mission St., I bought my most expensive bicycle from them--a road touring bike, Trek 520 fitted with STI shifters and Shimano cleat pedals. This bicycle cost me over a thousand dollars and it was all worth it. Phil is the head mechanic and Kathy primarily works in the storefront. They are both very congenial and definitely cater to bicyclists of all kinds including "non-hipster" types like me who view bicycles as a primary form of transportation. I don't own a car. They maintained my bike over the years and were able to fix it up even after two major crashes--both involving cars. I do have one little complaint. They sold me two brand new but outdated Continental Top Touring tyres. These two tyres have been sitting in their shop for so long that after riding less than 100 miles on them, they began developing cracks and fissures. This is indicative of the rubber past its prime. They shouldn't have sold me these tyres. They cost me about $40 each! :-( Anyway, although not the biggest bikeshop in town, it's worth it to come to this shop because of the friendly and usually reliable service, and also because Phil, the head mechanic, is extremely knowledgeable. read more

I credit Sprockets for teaching me how to ride and taking me through my first cruiser, road bike, and mountain bike experiences. I didn't start biking until I was an adult, and a nervous one at that. All the customer service and care you've read about in previous reviews is true, but I think the real ingredient here is integrity-- and a real understanding of all the different kinds of people who come to biking. My husband is a hardcore biker lunatic-- and it's his favorite shop. My children learned to ride coming here. I brought their friends. It's their favorite now too. I brought my bike in for a tuneup on a Saturday and had a mixed experience. On the plus side, they worked very quickly (6-hour turnaround) and they correctly degreased my new chain and put on dry lube as I had requested (something other bike shops have "forgotten" to do). On the minus side, the brakes were adjusted too loose, so that I bottomed-out the brake levers when braking, and they had the rear derailleur adjusted an entire index step off, in addition to setting the stops wrong, so that the first time I shifted into my lowest gear the chain came off into the spokes. The mistakes made were ones I would expect of an amateur or a new trainee, not a professional bike mechanic I was paying an $80 labor fee for. I spent about half an hour readjusting my brakes and rear derailleur, and they now work fine, so the problem was just one of sloppy work, not of any inherent problem with the equipment. read more

Good people here! You always get a greeting when you walk in the door and they do good work. My first interaction was buying a set of lights and lube here before Bike Pary (!!!!!) and they were chill. Came back again for new tires and a bike rack a couple months later. They didn't have my size in the tires I wanted, but they gave me a discount on the more expensive conti touring tires and installed 'em too. They put the rack on as well. I wanted to buy them a 6 pack, but didn't have my ID when I went to the store :/ I recently took my bike for a tuneup here where they also replaced my chain and brake pads. It would have been 24 hour turnaround, but they didn't have the chain in stock. A good neighborhood bike shop that has friendly people :) read more
