If you want comfort caribbean food, you must go here! The service was excellent. They are in the middle of a bar renovation so the interior was lacking appeal but they did have a disclaimer. However, the food made up for the lack of decor. I ordered the coconut shrimp. It was great. The shrimp were jumbo size and the coconut coating was crunchy. It would have been perfect if the coconut flavor was a little more pronounce. The shrimp was well done and not too chewy and it still tasted good. I ordered the brown stew chicken with collard greens and Caribbean rice. It was fall-off the bone chicken and very flavorful. It was the perfect peppery flavor. The top item here though in my opinion is the plantain. This is the best plantain I've ever had. Crunchy sweet coating and soft, smooth, moist center, not the hard chewy kind. It's perfect. You must get this side. The topping of service was the banana-nut muffin complimentary dessert. They were perfectly moist and not too sweet. It was a natural sweetness of the banana. Great way to end the experience. This is not a high end restaurant, expect a homestyle restaurant. You must try this restaurant out when you're around town. I left the place satisfied and full but not too bloated. read more

Everything about Cutlass was on point last night. We had a group of 7 (4 adults, 3 kids) and we only had about a 30 minute wait (which i think is good for a Saturday evening, and that size party). So, i'm going to start off with out waitress (& im sooooo sorry i don't remember her name), but she was excellent . I like when you ask an employee their opinion about something you want to order and they're completely honest. And she was also on point the entire night. I ordered the fried shrimp with mac & cheese and green beans. Let's start off with, you get 6 shrimp, but they were HUGE. so i believe i only ate two lol. and im honestly not a fan of everybody's mac & cheese, but theirs was on point. My guy ordered the jerk chicken with cabbage and rice & beans, and he literally crushed. lol. I also ordered the honey mule, and it was very tasty and delicious . I would definitely go back to Cutlass, and recommend anybody to try it out. It was well worth it . read more

You can tell that the owners/managers care about this place and it shows in the quality, quantity and affordability of the food. The waitresses could be better. On my first visit here I ordered and got items to go. The owner/manager...someone who looked like they were in charge seemed to be teaching the person behind the bar the art of customer service. Smiling, asking if you need anything ,etc. Ive also visited and seen 2-3 waitresses standing around and its very hard to get there attention to get a seat. I wish that was already instilled in the person before they got hired but hey...you gotta give people a chance right? I typically get the curry chicken with cabbage, rice and peas and/or macaroni and cheese. The kind of cheese they use is different, not completely terrible but more of a velveeta texture and not finished off in the oven. I will always return but hope they have improved on their wait staff. read more

Pricey but the food is very good! I go there often! I love the lamb chops and cabbage! But not enough oxtails for the money! And I need more than six shrimp in a full meal! I feel like I've been had after spending $50 for a meal! read more

OK, so I'm an American who grew up in the Caribbean, right? I thought that I would have to go back to the islands to get that taste again. Was I ever wrong! I found Cutlass Grille about 18 months ago and my taste buds have been happy ever since! The food is authentically prepared and the service quick and friendly. Moreover, they have Ting! No Caribbean meal is complete without this tantalizing grapefruit drink that comes straight from the islands. Get yourself over here. You'll be glad you did. read more

My husband and I were finally able to check this place out. I had friends that have been raving about this restaurant. I ordered a curry goat with rice and peas, and plantains, and my husband got curry goat with Mac and cheese, and plantains. No drinks were ordered. The order came up to $45! I was shocked and surprised of the over-pricing. I'm Jamaican and raised in Brooklyn and normally when you order food the rice is included in the meal. But the side are separate. I believe the items are over-priced. The food tasted too much of seasoning salt and lacked the curry taste. The plantains were really good, but how can you mess up fried banana. First and last time coming to this place. I'd rather go to MP's in Norfolk or this other spot in Virginia Beach by Independence and Holland. Never again. A waste of money. read more

There are more than a few handful of good things to say about this place and only minor nitpicks that I have that give this 4 stars. If I could give 4.5 I would because it truly is a remarkable place. In short, Cutlass Grille brings a delicious, authentic Jamaican cuisine in an area that hardly has many of this type of fare. Foods are simple, but full of flavor. Atmosphere is that of a relaxed cafe and the price is moderate. Overall this is the perfect place if you are in the mood for some fantastic Jamaican food mixed with a bit of home cooking and a dash of comfort cuisine. Me and my wife came here on a Thursday evening around 7pm for dinner. Upon walking in I immediately noticed that there was a good amount of people. Not just in the dining room but also waiting for to go orders. This place seems to be a regular spot for some locals when it comes to picking up some dinner for the family. I will say that the place isn't that big. Probably ideal for groups of 4-6, and I'm not sure how equipped they are to handle kids since I only spotted 2 high chairs in the entire restaurant. We were greeted promptly. Our hostess and waitress (the same person) was very friendly and knowledgeable when it came to their food. She gave me great recommendations and I wasn't disappointed. For appetizers I ordered the mini Jamaican beef patties since it was one of my favorite snacks when my wife and I honeymooned in Jamaica. I have to say, that these were absolutely fantastic. Even better than the ones I had in Jamaica. The crust was perfect. The filling was warm and tasty. Not overly spicy where you can't even taste it anymore. And the highlight of the dish was the sauce that came with it. Almost like a tangy barbecue honey mustard type sauce. I closely associate it with the Chick Fil A sauce but it was definitely a step above and paired perfectly with the beef patties. Out of 5 I definitely give this dish the full 5 stars. My wife had the coconut shrimp and our first impression was how GIGANTIC the shrimp were. What we loved about it was that it wasn't overly breaded and greasy. But just enough to give it a nice crunch and had just a hint of coconut flavor. It wasn't overpowering and it wasn't heavy. A nice light appetizer with an amazing sweet chili sauce to go with it. You can definitely tell they make their own sauces. It wasn't like any other sweet chili sauce I've had before and it was definitely a hit with the shrimp. For the main course, I had the smoked ribs with mac and cheese and collard greens. The rib meat falls off the bone and my first bite was exploding with flavor. The smokiness on this thing is off the charts. It was so full of flavor my taste buds tingled. My only little nitpick was that it might have had too MUCH smokiness. After a few bites I had to dip it in barbecue sauce to kind of tone it down. I was burping and could smell the smoke come up. But it was still a fantastic set of ribs. The mac and cheese was fabulous. I love mac and cheese and always order it if a restaurant has it so I've had a lot to taste in the past. This one is definitely up there as one of the top. It's not fancy but just done right. It's just that good old kind where it reminds you of home and comforts you right to the soul. I definitely cleaned my bowl and may have even licked it after. The collards were nice. Only thing is that I thought it was a tad salty, especially paired with the ribs, but I probably should've put some vinegar on it anyways since that's how it should be eaten in the first place! My wife had the red snapper with fried tostones and the Jamaican rice. She was pleasantly surprised that she was served an entire fish...bone and all. She's a stickler for seafood so she was happy that this was fresh and not fried and filleted. She said the fish was flaky (a good thing) and had loads of flavor. She also really enjoyed the Jamaican rice, but said the fried tostones were a little bland. Apparently tostones are friend plantains that aren't sweet. That's probably why they tasted bland to her. Overall though, she gave her dish a 4 out of 5. For dessert we got the plantain foster since we read alot of good things on yelp about it. The yelpers got it right! This dessert was the bomb! Plantains were caramelized oh so good and the pairing with the ice cream, cinnamon, caramel and chocolate syrup just made a wonderful bite every time. My only gripe is that I wish there were more plantains. The ice cream to plantain ratio was off and we were left with a bunch of ice cream after we finished those delicious pieces of fruit. All in all, I am so excited to come back to this place and continue to explore the menu. Jamaica has a special place in my wife and I's heart since it's where we had our honeymoon so we are glad this place got it right! read more

Went here for Mother's Day brunch. Food was good (I didn't care for the oxtails at all) but it was slightly expensive and to charge a mandatory 20% gratuity for a party of 3 is absurd. Furthermore, $50 for a Caribbean buffet is ridiculous. I can pay for a meal at Aberdeen Barn for $50 and not be charged a mandatory 20% gratuity for subpar service. No thank you. read more

This has been a long time coming. (Okay, I've only been three times...more to come!). This place is my savior for carribean food. It hits every spot for me. I've done take out and dine in, I will say take out was better for me. While the drums and such they have people play are awesome, that isn't really my thing (if it's your thing than for sure you'll love it!). It also is a very upbeat atmosphere which I applaud! Let's get to the good stuff. I am madly in love with their jerk chicken and Mac n cheese. I wasn't a believer at first when my friend told me that this was it...yeah, she hit it on the money lol. The jerk chicken is delicious and juicy. I order a side of bbq sauce and gravy for it (indulge, guys!). I also recommend the plaintains. They're so sweet, and have the right amount of crispyness on the ends, but soft and sweet in the middle. The Mac and cheese is absolutely creamy, and for sure one of the best I've had in VA. I am truly a fan of this place. read more

Again, another great meal. Love the collard greens. Love the food, great every time. Live steal drummer was very good addition. The only problem I have is the acoustics are too hard causing hard echoing in the room, which makes it difficult for me to carry a conversation with my wife. I felt like I had to yell at her, and I wasn't even mad! Collards and Ginger Beer are the best addition to a great meal! Must try when in the neighborhood. read more

I was so excited to see this when searching for Jamaican cuisine. This location is clean, the vibe was nice, the staff were attentive and the business were preparing for live music. I ordered brown stew chicken and jerk chicken meals. The food was terrible. This can pass for someone that doesn't know what it should taste like. The "Jamaican rice," or rice and peas..... had no coconut milk, thyme, green onion, and it was par-boiled. The brown stew chicken was salty with watery gravy and had no brown stew flavor. It tasted like the chicken we pre-baked and browning sauce was added. The jerk chicken was also salty, no jerk sauce or jerk seasoning. It was simply baked chicken. The greens and mac and cheese were also salty. Wow, super disappointed! With all of that said, I would come back for a drink or live music but not for the food. read more

Yum. I guess that's not a good enough review, but really - it kind of says it all. I have been here once and can already say it'll be a frequent favorite for us. We had curried chicken and curried goat. Mac n cheese, green beans, collards, and coco bread. The main entree - just delicious. The curried meats were perfect. Well cooked.. Nice and tender. The carrots and potatoes were perfectly cooked. The side dishes were absolutely perfect. I could do a whole review about the green beans alone. Fresh - grilled - perfectly seasoned - juicy. For a second when I tried my first bite, I thought they might be a little salty. But I was wrong. They were just a little - perfect :). The coco bread was also perfect, soft, and warm. Go here, now! :) I believe our servers name was Katie - and aside from being cute as a button - she was pretty perfect too :) Oh - and the prices were very reasonable as well. read more

I enjoyed my meal. The service and the location were amazing. The rich paint colors and wonderful decor is amazing. We sat in a booth near the bar. I really would have enjoyed a cushion in the wooden bench seat but.....that is my age showing. We started with Coconut shrimp. Wow! Great flavor. Big shrimp. Loved it. I ordered the Jerk chicken, white meat with collards and baked beans with brisket. My chicken was very flavorful but slightly dry. The collards were amazing and the baked beans were "off the chain." My husband ordered a half rack of ribs, collards and baked beans. Instead of a half rack, he received six singles. The single rib pieces he received were similar in color but not in flavor. We had good drinks and ordered banana pudding to go. It was 30 minutes to closing time on Saturday so we did takeout. Mistake. The waitress told us that it would have it layered in the cup. We received five vanilla wafers on top of pudding. Maybe our experience was different because we went at 830pm on Saturday night only 1.5 hours before they closed. We will try Cutglass Grille again because we loved the service and the collard and baked.beans with brisket. read more

You haven't truly lived if you have never ordered dessert before your meal. I have lived many times and did when I visited Cutlass Grille for the first time. I ordered the Fosters Plantain as my app. It is in my top 5 of desserts. It is that good. Imagine... smelled of cinnamon and nutmeg. Four pieces of plantain, cooked with butter and brown sugar until crispy on the edges and soft and warm inside, then seasoned with cinnamon, nutmeg, all spice and apricot rum, was accompanied by three large scoops of salted caramel ice cream and drizzled with the sauce from the plantains. This restaurant, which opened its new, bigger location in December, may not look like much from the outside but as soon as you step foot out of your car, you are hit with the wonderful aroma of smoked meats and BBQ sauce. My lil' guy and I visited on a weekday during lunch, ordered our food to go, and enjoyed the vibe, dessert and an appetizer at the bar while we waited. It was a slow lunch day, but phones were non-stop with takeout orders being placed, and the colorful walls and Reggae music playing from the speakers made it feel lively and lifted my hump day mood. Before experiencing one of the best desserts I was about to taste, one of the waitresses charmed my son in her friendly, girl-next-door way. I felt like I was home talking to family, and wished I could have stayed longer to enjoy her company (or hired her as our babysitter but thought that would be weird). The plantains remained warm, the ice cream cold and the rum was prominent enough that it made me feel like I was eating a dessert that should only be devoured by adults. But I reluctantly shared a few rum free spoonfuls with my son who was questioning why I was being so stingy. I blamed it on the rum. We also enjoyed the Coconut Shrimp - four jumbo, butterfly coconut shrimp were served with a mango sweet chili sauce. The shrimp were cooked to perfection, and the crunchy coating was full of fresh coconut. The sauce was so flavorful - sweet with a small hint of heat - that I triple dipped each piece. "Yes, I'm a triple dipper." On our way out, we met the owner Sean, who is also one of the Chefs. He was as warm and friendly as his staff, and showed such care and attention to us as customers that I know his business will be around for years to come. We left happy. It's amazing what great customer service can do to your mood. It's the little things... At home, our enjoyment of the food continued as we quickly cleaned our containers of Jerk Chicken, Mac n' Cheese and Collard Greens, and Smoked Ribs. The jerk chicken was tender and spicy and seasoned with jerk flavor through to the bone. I prefer my mac n' cheese creamier, however it was packed with cheese, and although it appeared on the dry side, it was not dry at all, and was a good choice of side with the jerk chicken, as it helped to calm the spiciness of the jerk. The collards greens were good 'ole southern collards with an added smoky flavor from the smoked turkey leg that was generously added. And not overcooked so you could still enjoy earthy flavor of the collards. A popular item on their menu is the ribs, and I see why. I regretted not ordering more. The tender meat fell off the bones, and had just the right amount of smoky flavor. But the BBQ sauce was a definite standout. Thick, dark, sweet, spicy, tangy. The same love that was put into the dessert must have been put into that sauce. I don't believe they bottle and sell it, but they should. Next time, I'll order the curry shrimp, brown stew chicken, one of the special Jamaican cocktails and of course, dessert. I have not been back since my first visit, but only because I don't get to Chesapeake much. But I think about the dessert more than one should. It's actually embarrassing how much I think about that dessert. So, take the trek to Chesapeake, and enjoy this Grille. It's worth it. Trust me. read more

Partner & I decided to try a new restaurant last night, (9/10/2021), and we've heard nothing but good things about Cutlass Grille! I'm so happy we don't have to go over the water to get good Jamaican food anymore. I'm not sure why we haven't tried this spot before considering we have been in the plaza several times before. We arrived around 8 pm, and was told it would be about a 20 minute wait for our food, which was no biggie since it was a Friday night and they had a full house. I got the curry goat with red beans & rice and it was so delicious. Perfect portion for me, and I have leftovers! My partner got the oxtail dinner and was very pleased with his choice. He was hoping for a little more meat, but since it was close to closing and oxtails is a Jamaican favorite he wasn't too bothered by it. So far, this restaurant has had the second best greens, and the best Jamaican mac & cheese in the 757 for me. For a restaurant working with limited staff, the food and service was still superb. I'm only giving a 4 because our beef patties were missing from our order, but other than that no complaints. We will be back soon! read more

This is the best Caribbean restaurant I've been to in Hampton Roads! The restaurant is clean and inviting with a great atmosphere for casual dinning. When I went on a Friday night, they had a live musician playing saxophone. The servers were friendly. I felt like their service was a bit slow but on a Friday night with a full house, I guess it can be expected. The jerk chicken was savory with a pleasant kick. The oxtail was tender with tasty gravy. I liked their rice with peas as well. Their portions are generous and the prices are fair. If you enjoy Caribbean food, I highly recommend this place! read more

A couple weeks ago. My wife and I had visited this place for our night out. The inside was very nice. It does at times feel it is doing a bit much to give the authentic feel. A warm feeling especially when they have live music playing. My wife had the jerk chicken with mac and cheese with rice. While I had the Oxtail with rice and plantanos. We also had drinks, sadly I do not remember the names but they were good. Good enough that my wife who is not much of a drinker is attempting to recreate the one drink she had. Now to the courses. The Oxtail I had was tender, savory and it paired really well with the rice. There was no excess grease or fat from the meat/sauce which was a big plus. You could actually taste good flavor in its pairing. No overpowering flavor points. The plantanos was fried well with no excess oil leaving it with a tasty set of plantanos to serve. The presentation as a whole not of a five star or some fancy gourmet presentation, but of display similar of a grandmother serving her family to ensure that they're fed well. Overall my meal was very enjoyable with little to dislike. The jerk chicken had a pleasant kick at the least for me. I can not say the same for my wife who's spice tolerance is lower then mine. The chicken had great flavor but was just a bit on the dry side. The Mac and Cheese was good in its flavor and not overly strong on its cheese flavor. The rice was the same as mine so it was just as good. The price for all that we ordered was a bit steep but it was reasonable. The quality, quantity and presentation carried the price well. There is one issue I did want to make clear and that is the term of authentic. Granted it is not the absolute best tasting Caribbean food I had for that I say go to the actual island during one of the festivities. It is however very good food that does shows its respect to its source as best as they could. For that I can truly respect them. I recommend this place to anybody who wants to have an idea of good island food. read more

OMG I'm sitting in the restaurant right now!! I could not wait until I left to let yall know about this place. Part of me wants to be selfish and keep it to myself because it's really THAT good. So today was our first of many trips and we ordered the Pepper Pot Oysters and Lamb Chops as Apps.... When I say it was phenomenal!! Omg the taste and quality had my husband and I excited about our main courses. Our picky LO got the fried shrimp and Mac and cheese and cleared her plate saying that the Mac and cheese may have been better than mine ( no offense taken bc whomever made that did their thing). I ordered the oxtails with cabbage and rice and peas and it was delicious no complaints at all everything was cooked perfectly. My husband ordered the Chef Special Jerk Turkey Burger which he enjoyed. Now there were only three cons but nothing that would keep us from visiting again. Hopefully this review is read by the mgmt and they can take care of these small items and they would have a 5/5 in my book. First, the strawberry puree/slush for the drinks was out. This is something that doesn't happen at larger Caribbean themed establishments so it shouldn't happen here if they are your direct competitors. Secondly, the pineapple on the specialty burger wasn't grilled or included due to them "running out" in the kitchen. Now my server did bring my husband out a slice of pineapple from the bar to make up for the slight but if it's listed as a special it should be readily available. Final thing, if you decide to dine in they add a 18% gratuity which is unheard of here even at top establishments however it is a common place and more popular in establishments located in ATL l. In addition you have a 90 minute window to eat. Again I'd never sit for 90 minutes at a restaurant however a rule such as this is more common in ATL restaurants I.e Keith Lee reviews. It's just is uncourteous and made me initially second guess my restaurant choice when entering, as both signs are in the front of the restraints in large letters. Outside of those small items it was an awesome experience and we WILL be back!! Thank you Cutlass Grille!!! I forgot to add we got two mixed drinks and the mango bread pudding.... Smh... delicious just needs some vanilla ice cream!! Soooooo good!!! read more

The only good thing about it for me was the sweet tea, the rice was dry and the Mac and cheese wasn't the best

It has been like 3 years since I've had their food, when they use to have a smaller food restaurant place and I thought they were closed, I had no idea that they had opened a bigger place. I had ordered the brown stew chicken with 2 sides:sweet fries (sweet potatoes) and fried plantains and shared it with my sister. On the platter they serve 3 types of chicken quarters that has a brown sauce that had carrots and red peppers mixed in. The sweet fries had a bit of cinnamon sprinkled on them, and the fried plantains are a must try, they compliment the dish and savor that sweet spot we tend to crave. After checking out of hotel this morning my wife and I wanted to find something good to eat before we got back on road to head home (NC) we searched and decided to try this spot. We walked and we were greeted right away. About 5 min later we're greeted by our waitress, we ordered the beef patties bites as a appetizer and they were amazing. Upon ordering our main course, the waitress didn't really seem to know how the food tasted and what she thought was good but that's not a big deal. I ordered the white meat jerk chicken, rice n beans and Mac n cheese, my wife ordered the ox tails, green beans and Mac n cheese. Our food came out in a timely fashion but my wife plate didn't have Mac n cheese instead they gave her rice n beans, we told the waitress n she immediately corrected it. My wife enjoyed her food and my only gripe was that the rice n beans were very dry and hard, basically inedible to me. The atmosphere was nice. I recommend goin...just don't order the rice and beans. SUPERB place to eat! To start we had the Coconut Shrimp and it was crunchy, tasty, and the dipping sauce was a unique sweet/hot dipping sauce. Drinks were very strong and very good! Bourbon mule and Pina-Colada x2 was had by my wife and I. We then had perfect brisket cooked and cut just right along with the pulled pork dish that was seasoned just right. Black beans and rice was hot and seasoned well. Desserts: carrot cake and mango bread pudding were both a 10/10. The bread pudding was my favorite. Tonight was my first visit to Cutlass Grille upon recommendation from my boyfriend, whom of course dined with me. Upon entrance to the restaurant, I knew this was one of those places I'd instantly feel comfortable, and as I was greeted by the hostess, my perception was right. The service is top notch in all regards. Stacey was incredible and genuine. Being a previous server for 9 years, you appreciate any server with a smile on their face as most of my interactions with food service workers/servers are average, if not sub par. Now to the food. Every.single.bite. was an experience. I was not eating here to simply fill my stomach. I actually had to slow down my usual eating pace to savor the incredible flavors of this food. Anyone with a foodie IQ MUST try. If not, that's ok too, you'll love it also. I had the pulled pork barbecue with mac and cheese and collards. I played it safe for my first time, but even that was the best barbecue I've had. I will be sure to be more adventurous next time if they can do the staples so well. I could not believe this happened during Black History month at a Black establishment! I am very hurt and disappointed. My cousin called me this evening to tell me about a (hardly) micro-aggression she experienced at Cutlass Grille this evening. First, I stopped patronizing this establishment post-COVID, as I feel the food quality has significantly declined and the price has significantly gone up, along with a mandatory tipping practice. Nonetheless, my cousin decided to take her hard-earned money there this evening and have drinks and dessert at the bar. An older White woman chose to sit one (empty) chair down from her at the countertop bar. After several unsuccessful attempts to strike up a conversation with my cousin, she reached over to my cousin's plate and proceeded to eat my cousin's dessert. My cousin, completely in shock, said nothing at the moment while bartenders and patrons watched the blatant disrespect. The manager and the owner were made aware by employees because it was clearly so appalling. Spectators were offended by my cousin because it was just so appalling. The owner did nothing other than replace my cousin's dessert. I am so disappointed that her experience didn't matter to anyone in charge at this establishment. Please, we have to do better than this. They should be ashamed of this level of tacit compliance. The White woman enjoyed my Black cousin's desert uninterrupted and without a word of reprimand by the establishment about the stealing of her food. No apology was even expressed for the embarrassment she endured. Consider whether your dollar is all that matters before dining here, because apparently, your dignity does not matter to Cutlass Grille. Very painful to write... read more
