I really hate to give bad reviews but I am totally in awe about how this got so many good reviews. Either they have never had real Jamaican food, or they must be family, friends or paid lol. It should be a crime to call this Jamaican food. Let's start with the appetizer..beef patties. They did not seem made fresh, they were average at best kinda grocery store ish. Jerk chicken?? Umm but with no jerk sauce and not made on a grill. My hubby came home and doctored it up. How do you have salty food with no flavor? I had oxtail that raised my BP but tasted terrible. This had been one of my favorite places since they first opened. Last Sunday we had family dinner planned with 7 people so called Saturday to see if they took reservations Sunday night. They said no but should not be a long wait. We got there about 5:30 pm Sunday and were told no one gets seated after 5 pm. We had six people in 2 cars so had to redirect on the fly. I told the reception person about our call and asked why the person on phone did not tell us this policy. Asked for manager, she just repeated policy. We won't be planning to go back. read more

First off, let me say we really enjoyed going to Cutlass when they were at the old location. At the new location, there's a sign advising you as you walk in that there's a 20% additional charge on all meals due to them being short-staffed. Maybe it's just me but that really rubbed me the wrong way. Why should the customers have to pay a 20% "staffing tax" ? The greeter at the door was very unenthusiastic. The waitress was very nice when she had availability to check on us. Drinks and food took a really long time to come. I'm not sure it makes sense for folks to have to wait longer to get their food and be charged 20% more on top of it. We probably won't be back. read more

Not gonna lie - this may have been the worst Caribbean food I've ever had. Now, I will say my standards are high, after living in Miami for 3 years. But still, this was not good, especially for the price I paid. The jerk chicken had no gravy on it. And honestly it tasted more like smoked chicken than jerk. My husband had the curry chicken - and again it came with no sauce on it ... the plantains were decent, and he described the rice & potatoes as "mediocre at best" Would not recommend. Lot's to say about this new place. Some good. Some bad. One great. We ate on Saturday at 1:00. The decor could be so much better. Had they left off the few touristy items from Jamaica it would look like a great modern restaurant. Instead it looks like a good looking modern restaurant that didn't make it and a Jamaican bought it and screwed up with a cheap reno. The front staff should be fired. No smile. No welcome. No energy. After observing her while dining I suspect she is a daughter or relative of the owner. And, for sure she did not want to be working. Seating was bad. Only high tops or the worst table in the restaurant next to the take out registers was available. We took the worst table. High tops were invented in hell. We were stunned by the quietness. It was like eerily quiet for a full restaurant. Sometime during our meal some music came on that encouraged some noise. The menu is way too complicated. It offers mains then prices for one side then a price for two sides. Why? Confusing. Just list the mains and list the sides. Simple. Easy. Most items were sort of typical of Jamaican food. Wasn't aware that there are a lot of lambs in Jamaica. My husband got fried plantains and jerk pork. I got goat curry, greens and rice. Ok, the plantains we're obviously from frozen as they were uniform in size and only about 6 pieces. Not fresh plantains cooked properly twice. ( I have been eating and cooking plantains for 60 years.) . The greatest disappointment was the main of jerk pork. The serving was minuscule and was absolutely dried out and tasteless! This is a Jamaican restaurant! The pork should have been a nice moist pile full of aromas and flavors. A complete dud. My goat curry was great! Nice serving. Good meaty bones. Flavors good. The rice serving was very good. Full of labor, beans and such. The greens was a nice size serving and were the best greens ever eaten in my life. Just perfection! Without the greens this would be a two star review instead of three. Our waitress was the best. Friendly and always there to refill ice tea. She talked us into sharing a coconut cake. The serving was plenty for two. Moist, simple and delicious. I think the owners were there as there was a tall attractive woman who seemed to be supervising. She never managed to wake up the hostess. And, there was a man who walked through asking how the food was. But, he never stopped to get an answer. Just asked and walked on almost as if he didn't actually want to hear the answers. $79 for lunch on Saturday isn't really how it should be. Especially for what is supposed to be a casual ethnic restaurant. They need to "fun" up the place a bit with friendly, lively greeters and less mechanical house service. All the wait staff acted as if they just graduated wait school and were on probation. The tea is way overpriced. One lunch was worthless, the other delicious and almost worth the price. A piece of cake means that they can sell a whole cake in pieces for about $75. A bit much. We probably will return. But will be more careful about the menu offerings and not return right away. Yes! Finally a decent Caribbean restaurant with delicious food and awesome service. It's unfortunate for me that it's quite a hike from VB but it was worth it!!! The place was pretty packed on a late rainy Saturday afternoon but we were seated right away and our server was on point. Very bubbly, knowledgeable, friendly, and prompt. She gave wonderful recommendations and pointed out the specials they had which was also written on the chalkboard. I cannot rave more about their Oxtail Stew -- goodness gracious that was perfect. Oh, and their coco bread is probably the best I've had in the area. It was big, fresh, and everything I look for in coco bread. Other places? Tiny ass piece or hard and pricey. So in other words.... get it! Yeah, they offer complimentary bread while waiting on your food but so what. YOLO is the term, yes?? I would love to go back and try other things but I'm gonna tell you, I'm probably going to be a repeat offender and get the Oxtail Stew again (and again). I am updating my review. First off, I have been going to the Cutlass Grille for 6 years. Before they moved to their new location, I went there at least once a month. Since they moved, I have not been there much. The food and service there is always very good. However, after my experience today, I will not be going back, as well as warning other people to stay away, until they change their policy. I went there today for lunch and everything was good, as always. I looked at my bill and immediately noticed it was much higher than I expected. I examined the check. The lunch special cost was correct. The soda nearly $4 (why any restaurant charges more than a 2 liter bottle for something that costs pennies, boggles my mind, but not the issue). Tax was correct, even the additional Chesapeake tax. Then I saw it: a 20% service charge. I flagged the waitress over and said there was a mistake. She said that they put that in 6 months ago because of the reduced number of people coming in because of the pandemic and the servers werent making enough. I said there was no notice of the charge. The waitress said there was a sign up front. I didnt see it when I walked in... I normally tip 15%, so I wasnt going to argue over 5%. So I paid the bill. I walked to the front and looked around thoroughly. There was NO sign notifying of the 20% service charge. I asked the hostess, she looked, no sign. I asked for the manager. He came out and he wasnt rude of combative at all. I said it was illegal to charge more without notice. He said it was legal and that there was a sign. So I asked where, he looked around. He pulled out a sign from behind the counter and said it should have been out. I didnt look at it to see if the notice was there. Even if it was, it was not visible by anyone, hidden away. He offered to remove the charge, but again, not going to argue over 5%. The restaurant was full and there was no lack of tipping customers. Tipping is the customer's choice, NOT the management's. If they feel their servers arent getting paid enough, then pay them more. You do not get to decide what I tip. They have lost me as a customer until they remove the ridiculous 20% service charge. read more

Oh wow what more can you ask for?! This place is so good and I mean that! If you are in the area or just stopping by please take the time to come here. Some of the BEST island BBQ I have ever had. There was no wait when we came which is always a plus but there were plenty of people there. Just a great venue size for the amount of people that love to eat haha. I ordered the Jamaican Jerk Chicken (white meat), with macaroni and cheese and rice and beans with Jerk gravy! All of it was exceptional! The servings are very generous and the food is so fresh. It was hot and we did not have to wait long at all for food. The jerk had a nice spicy kick but it was very flavorful. Loved the rice and beans! So hubby & I wanted something different for dinner and his work friend always talks about Cutlass Grille and how good the food is. Let me tell you... the food was amazingly good! My husband had the jerk ribeye with sweet plantains and I had the jerk lamp chops, cabbage and Mac n cheese. The service wasn't the best but that was because of the waitress just lacked being available to us for refills, bringing us our check and taking our check so we could leave. But I would go again definitely because the food was amazing! Oh and the drinks were weak but again that wouldn't stop me from going again that just prevented a five star. However, presentation aside, this food is delicious and packed with flavor. I had ordered curry goat with collards and plantains. The collards had a nice smoky taste and were cooked well, not soggy and overdone. The plaintains were nice and had good caramelization. And the goat...oh, the goat. My Dad had jerk chicken and it must have been good because he said the "jerk chicken is jerkin" while trying to stuff himself to the max. My Aunt had the rib tips which she said were tender and packed with flavor. All I know is that I'll be back plenty because now I have to try everything on the damn menu! I have always enjoyed dining here in the past and plan to continue dining here in the future. Cutlass Grille serves Jamaican cuisine as well as barbecue and simply put the food is amazing. In my last visit to Cutlass Grille I ordered the oxtails with macaroni n cheese along with rice and peas as my sides with oxtail gravy on the rice and peas of course! Side note the oxtail gravy is beyond delicious and in the future I'll be ordering a side of it regardless of what I order. My friends ordered the jerk chicken and the rum glazed pork chop, which tasted as amazing as it looked on the plate. We all left completely stuff and with huge smiles on our faces. This restaurant is located at the Old Surf Rider location at Greenbrier. The inside has been revamped with nice tropical colors and island vibe touches throughout. They serve delicious Jamaican food and a legit Rum Punch. We started with jerk shrimp tacos. I had the special: a blackened grouper with a crawfish cream sauce, fried plantains and peas and rice which is kidney beans and rice. I loved every single bite. My husband had fried whiting and added fried shrimp. Crispy, delicious, fresh. It was a bit over salted and my husband searched for a sauce because he's a dipper but you couldn't ask for fresher or tastier seafood. The mini beef patties are delish but WHAT IS THAT SAUCE?!? *chefs kiss* The fried fish was cooked to a perfectly crunchy and seasoned golden brown.
