Staying in the small town of Newtown, KS there is not many options for a cafe or breakfast food. This little diner has decent food options for breakfast. It is seat yourself style like most diners. They had a whole wall about Kansas/Kansas city memorabilia. They had a Joe Montana jersey , that brought back awesome self memories. Food was diner food which is expected. I got B&G half order with hash browns, I asked for extra crispy hashbrowns, they definitely weren't crispy and not extra for me. The biscuit was more on the dense side which some people like. The highlight was the sausage gravy. Smother everything. It's a cute diner and it's the option you got that is not fast food or buffet. read more

We go there often and the food is always good. I judge a diner by their omelets and chicken fried steak, and both are excellent.

The food costs are raising and understanding the food to the customers will raise also. But the portion size and quantity has gone down more and more over the past 6 years. The used menu options and lack luster cooking. Nothing there to draw customers. The staff is unbelievably rude, will ignore will with multiple attempts to get their attention. The restaurant in whole is a dank depressing hole in the wall with an uncomfortable setting. Sadly this is the only place in Newton that has a breakfast. read more

We like to try little diners when traveling and thought we'd give this one a try. It was almost 11:00 and was not too busy. Lots of sports memorabilia but nothing telling us if Curtis C was an athlete or how they tied together (if they did). I had French toast and bacon. I enjoyed my FT - it appeared to be deep fried and gave it a beignet type flavor (which I love). Bacon was cooked well. Hubby had egg plate and was disappointed in that it appeared he got the end of the day's batch - many small pieces of potato, many of them burnt. Toast was cold. Eggs and bacon were OK. Our food came out quickly but no one stopped by to see how things were. Seems like a spot for regulars as many customers were greeted by name. read more

Traveling through Newton on my way to Hays. Who doesn't like a good breakfast? It's an old local diner with some food looking food according to the web. It's 12:15ish. They are not too busy. I help myself to a table as the sign read. A lady (not the server) brings me water and a menu. I figure out what I want. I check out the place. I make eye contact with the 3 waitresses. I wait. Wait a little longer. And a little longer. The original lady stops by and asks if anyone has come to take my order. I tell her no. She said she will get someone for me. I get up and leave. Took my business somewhere else down the highway. These people didn't want to serve me. I wasn't local enough for them I guess. I'm gonna guess you will get good service if you are local or some who looks local. I don't recommend this place. read more

Out-of-towners looking for good mom & pop food. Found this place, loved it! We like these little hole-in-the-wall diners. This place is nothing fancy, nor are the menu items, BUT we were thrilled with our food and the service. The special was pot roast and it was great, despite the fairly big piece of fat! We would return on the flavor of that pot roast alone. If you're in the mood for pancakes, don't eat for 24 hours before you order them here...they're massive! And quite good! Our server was the cutest, sweetest little lady. Probably still in her teens but knows a thing or two about good service. We weren't smart enough to get her name, sadly. It was my first time there and they messed up my order twice. The waitress didn't bother coming up to check on us another waitress did. a single patty of chicken was 15.00$! with nothing else but the chicken. couldn't even bother to take off the messed up food they did. very disappointed and will never come here again. super greedy spent over 50 for two meals! read more

The service was terrible. They took almost an hour to make our food and it wasn't even a lot. They also served us wrong orders as well when we ordered blueberry pancakes, they gave us regular and when they took it back they just threw blueberries on top. Chefs are lazy my pancakes were doughy and tasted like onions probably because they didn't clean the grill. read more

This place might fool you. It looks rundown and needs some loving and deeper cleaning. The food was very good and the service was not only excellent but very attentive. A Newton Kansas staple. Grew up coming here for breakfast and guilty pleasure food. Worth a try.

The food is really good here. The portion are a good size and the servers are very nice. They asked the cook to turn the pancakes into a Mickey Mouse face and my daughter loved it. Great place to go as a family. Breakfast here is my favorite. read more

After reading the reviews of this place. I had to come. My son and I were driving through to a College visit to Kansas Wesleyan. My son has not experienced an old fashioned cafe like this. I grew With one where I grew up. Pancakes were on point. My son loved the eggs and the bacon. They were both cooked just right. I am not a big breakfast person...UNTIL NOW!! My sister in law and I got the French Toast and sausage....a very basic meal. The FT seemed to be double battered and amazing. The sausage...I WANT MORE!! My brother got the Spanish omelet. The omelet and potatoes covered the plate. I would have liked the coffee to be a little stronger. The service was wonderful. This place is good, a very solid average home town diner. The French toast everyone talks about is very interesting, it's kind of like they dip it into funnel cake batter and deep fry it. I have to say it is pretty tasty. I had it with a generous piece of country ham. My husband had chicken fried steak, French fries, mixed vegetables, banana bread, and jello with fruit on top, with a table side presentation of whipped cream. This was the worst service I've had at a restaurant, ever. I legitimately thought the waitress might have been on drugs. Each of us had to repeat our orders to her 2-3 times, she didn't know the menu at all (I had to tell her several times what sides my meal was supposed to come with), she delivered our food to the wrong table (to a group that was finished eating and about to leave, which she should have known since she had already waited on them), she forgot to bring me a takeout box....the list goes on. All of this, mind you, was at 5:00, when there were only 2 other tables seated besides ours. It's not like she was trying to manage 20 orders. The salad bar is an absolute joke. My mashed potatoes tasted rancid, like maybe they used soured milk in them. The mixed veggies were so soggy you could chew them if you had no teeth. The one star rating is for the hostess that saved the day by doing everything the waitress should have done and for the slightly better than average chicken fried steak. Standard mom & pop diner-type fare. Good breakfast; the Gravy Train and their Omelets (especially the Philly Cheesesteak omelet) are my go-to favourites.
