Delicious spot! Their karage and spicy katsu curry were on point and very spicy. Opted for the medium spice level, but they have mashed red chilies in between the katsu as well so be prepared if you can't handle spice. Tonkatsu was a great dish as well, not on the spicy side but perfect texture and crunch. Overall great spot to check out if you're craving katsu curry!

Menchi ishiyaki curry with fried egg and side of hot sauce

A friendly neighborhood eatery specializing in Japanese curry. The lunch specials are popular and good value at $13.50 for your choice of a small appetizer (gyoza, takoyaki, etc.) and entree (shrimp tempura curry, katsu curry, etc.). I got the menchi ishiyaki curry and added a fried egg. The original (mild) curry sauce is slightly sweet, and the side of hot sauce (available upon request) was a nice kick of flavor...a little bit goes a long way so don't add too much at once. Service is friendly, and environment is relaxed. Saw lots of people stopping by for takeouts so might try that next time for family dinner.

This is a great casual restaurant to get japanese curry. There's plenty of parking, the place is clean, and the staff is very attentive. We got the build your own and opted for tonkatsu with cheese with rice. Also ordered curry fries and chu hi lemon soda to drink. Tonkatsu with Cheese- The curry sauce is delicious and flavorful. We ordered it mild so there isn't too much heat. The tonkatsu is crisp with a juicy interior and paired well with rice. The add on cheese delivers a creamy contrast. The pickled radish adds a burst of freshness. Curry Fries- Fries have a nice crisp and served piping hot. The curry and cheese provides a delicious sauce that absorbs so well. Such a fun appetizer! Chu Hi Lemon Soda- This has 6% alcohol but it was so refreshing I could barely taste. A nice twist to lemon soda. Great experience overall!

My fav curry spot in OC and in my old hood Eastside Tustin. The first time I got my ass kicked was right around the corner. The first 10 on 10 gang fight was around the counter. So many memories! I took my 13 year old, it was his first time having Japanese curry and he loved it. The service was excellent, I'm pretty sure it was the owner. We ordered the shrimp tempura udon curry bowl. The bowl was topped with the hottest, crispiest, freshest just out of the fryer shrimp. UUUUUHHHHMMMM i still dream of this. And that thick curry with the baddest ass udon noddles made by the Japanese gods. So good! Also the beef belly which was like that beef belly you get in Korean bbq that has that flat top crispiness. Served over that incredible Japanese rice. Da best! Also those pickles cut right through the heaviness of the spicy curry. So darn good, loved every bite. We'll def be back.

A cozy little restaurant. Not good for large parties. We were a party of 5 and can only sit at the bar seats. We happened to be there during happy hour. Takoyaki and agedashi tofu for $5 each. -The takoyaki wasn't as crispy as we would have liked. -tofu was good. -Beef belly donburi and chicken katsu donburi was flavorful but the beef to rice ratio was off. Not enough protein to rice ratio for my 13 year old growing teen. Haha -spicy chicken katsu with spicy curry level. Boy! That was SPICY! I can take spice and I eat thai chilies all the time, but let me tell you this was Hella spicy. I was sweating and couldn't even finish. (Fire emoji) -curry udon with soft shell crab - this was very tasty! Overall, the service here was very attentive and food was great!

A great japanese curry spot that doesn't have lines! Best part is that you can create your own bowl, including which meat, base, spice level, and add-on sides you want. Decided on the pork belly curry udon w/ an added egg. Pretty standard - the curry was very flavorful but the pork belly was very dry. They also do give a lot of meat compared to the base though!

$15 SPICY CHICKEN KATSU CURRY: it was a building spice & I also added red pepper that they serve on the side.

AMBIANCE (4/5): Modern and sleek. It's usually pretty empty for the 2 times I've been here. I think I've been the only one both times. SERVICE (5/5): Service was prompt and extremely friendly. We stayed to talk a long time and they didn't mind. But again we were the only ones the whole time. FOOD (5/5): The protein portion is small for each dish, so unless you're a "light" eater I highly suggest to add more protein. The taste of the food is AMAZING! It's a simple menu and I love that! They execute what they have very well. $15 SPICY CHICKEN KATSU CURRY: it was a building spice & I also added red pepper that they serve on the side. They have a build your own bowl, also got a PORK BELLY UDON. The udon is such a great option, I'm definitely ordering that next time. Don't forget to add a fried egg for added flavor! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Beef belly curry lunch special, with potatoes and carrots. And fried gyoza.
    Nerina E.

Their lunch special is great! Choice of appetizer, pick your protein and spice level, for $15. I had the gyoza, which were fried and came with a nice dipping sauce, and I had the beef belly adding potatoes and carrots, at medium spicy. Overall it was really good, and the bowl had a good amount of pickled reddish to refresh the pallet, I only wish it had a bit more sauce or maybe less rice... just needs to balance out. The service was quick and friendly, and the place is very clean and bright. Definitely recommend, and I will be coming back for more.

    1. Kari Kari chicken appetizer: very crispy. Surprise hit. Would get again 2. Hot stone menchi katsu mild: not spicy. Had a slight kick. Like the crunchy rice 3. Chicken katsu spicy: a lot of sauce which is great. Most places there's too much rice. It is spicy but just good enough. Doesnt taste like curry just but a great alternative. Would come back again. Food tastes better there than taking home. Too bad it's not closer. Service was A++++. Overall 4.5

my first time trying curry udon! Every time I come to a curry spot I always get the plate because it's what's familiar but here you can order curry different ways so I decided to try the udon and it was really good! I definitely recommend it especially now that the weather is a little cooler. You can also do split protein, which was great because I couldn't decide. This location is pretty decent because it has its own parking lot and it's nearby other shops as well. The people here are really nice and the service is pretty fast! It's a great casual spot to get your curry fix.

Took the family to Curry Do in Tustin after a long day at work. We didn't order much since the kids spoiled their appetite. We probably arrived about an hour and a half before closing. We were immediately seated and got to ordering two items. Service was quick and friendly. Our drinks were topped off frequently so we never ran out. That was really good because I drink a ton of water. I mean a ton. FYI. We were very cold inside. The table we were assigned to, was right under powerful AC vents. If you get cold easily, you need to bring a sweater. What we ordered; 1) Kari Kari - it's a chicken appetizer that comes with cabbage and tomato, with a soy garlic and mayo sauce. It seemed to have a tempura style batter on it, but not sure. This was a small portion even as an app, it was good. I liked it, however, I got tired of it quickly despite the small serving. You definitely need to have some of the cabbage to break the monotony of the fried chicken. A palette cleanser. 2) Beef donburi - this dish reminds me of Yoshinoya just eyeballing it. It was so good. I would order this one again. The meal came with a side salad that was also pretty tasty. The beef donburi was a hit with my picky kids. They started eating my food but they weren't hungry enough to order their own. I left Curry Do wanting more. I'm just gonna need to go back and make sure to order them one. Overall, I was happy with our food choice and the service. The food was good and we were well taken care of.

My husband and I wanted to try the spicy chicken katsu curry with rice advertised on their window, so we ordered this through their Curry Do app. The app is super simple to use and uses your digital wallet. We ordered the entree with the spicy curry which was indeed above the level my husband can tolerate so we ended up swapping plates. We added the carrots and potatoes. Just a note, the small curry and regular curry dish is priced the same so order the bigger portion to save for later! This curry was so good and reminded me of the curry we had in Japan. The food came out fairly quickly and the servers are super nice. I'm so glad there are more of these spots in OC because curry is life! Curry Do is located on Newport near the THH where I go for Vietnamese banh mi when I don't feel like driving into Little Saigon. The parking lot can get busy at times but it's worth a visit if you're in the area. The restaurant has a few tables inside, along with a bar area that can sit single diners and you can always order your food to go.

We've always had great experiences at the Curry Do in Costa Mesa, so we came to the Tustin location excited and expecting the same quality. Unfortunately, this visit really missed the mark. Right off the bat, our order came out wrong -- I ordered the chicken katsu udon and received pork instead. My husband's "spicy" udon had zero heat, which was surprising since their spicy usually packs a punch. On top of that, my udon noodles were mushy and overcooked, losing that chewy texture that makes udon so good. The flavors just didn't land the way they usually do, and the overall execution felt sloppy compared to what we're used to. We really wanted to love this location, but it just didn't deliver the Curry Do experience we know and enjoy.

Ask the Community - Curry Do

Does the curry contain dairy ingredients?

    Normally, Japanese curry has butter.

Is the chicken white meat or dark?

    White - Chicken breast.

    Does the curry contain peanuts?

I asked the owner, no nuts of any kind in the curry.

    Is it good for kids?

If they are okay with spices, it is premade, can't adjust spicy and there is a slight kick to it

Do they have Spice Levels? Like other Curry reseturants?

No they have one level and give a side of powder if you want to make it spicier. The curry itself is pretty mild.

Are any of the curries gluten free?

I asked about this, and as of right now, no. The roux (needed to thicken the curry) has wheat flour.

I had to call in my order (they are on Doordash but the prices are lower if you call). It would be nice if you could order through their website, but it's not a big deal. We got shrimp tempura, chicken katsu with a side of curry, and an Alaskan roll. The food was all delicious! My daughter could not get enough of the Alaskan roll. It's simple and classic, especially if you love salmon. The chicken katsu was really good and I enjoyed dipping it in the curry. They don't offer potatoes or carrots in their curry sauce like some other Japanese restaurants do, which was a small disappointment, but I still really liked the curry. It had that "spicy" but not spicy flavor that comes from all the flavorful spices like ginger that are in the curry, but it wasn't hot (we ordered mild). The chicken katsu was a good portion side and it came with a side of rice and angel hair shredded cabbage. Cabbage isn't the most exciting vegetable, but I'll take it. The shrimp tempura was great too. The takeout bag was packaged really nicely and the katsu came in a fancy little box, so even though we were eating at home it felt a little more upscale. I had expected the business to be in a more high volume area, however a benefit of their corner spot was that the parking lot had plenty of spaces. There's no indoor seating, but outdoor tables were set up along the north and east perimeters of the building. I was by myself at this latest visit, and it was close to the end of the day so the inventory was quite depleted. There was no line at all which was not a surprise. The famous Strawberry Croissants and prepackaged items were on refrigerated display to the left when you walked in. As the service counter rounded a corner, there were more fresh baked goods on display before you reached a register. Across from the registers were shelves containing bags of fresh bread products. I bought a Strawberry Croissant, a Sticky Bun, a Ham and Cheese Croissant, and an Apple Croissant. The quality of the pastry dough was very good, and I could see why the Strawberry Croissant was a favorite with the customers. The croissants were light and flakey, and the powdered sugar added a delicate topping to the strawberry version. If I were to rate on just the Strawberry Croissant, then it would be five stars. My overall rating was downgraded because of the customer traffic flow. The lines can be optimized so that if you wanted to buy a six-pack of the Strawberry Croissants and/or anything prepackaged, then a separate queue should be arranged for those customers. The cafeteria trays were of limited use if you were not getting a large number of items. As you advanced in the queue, other products had to be requested from a worker behind the counter and then those were not placed on the tray. Ultimately, I think they can configure the operation to more efficiently handle the higher volume periods of the day.

And the curry sauce? Now that is curry. A lot of places claim to serve Japanese curry, but the flavor ends up mild or watered down. Not here. This is the rich, warm, savory curry flavor I've been craving. The sauce comes on the side so you pour it over yourself. There were two ladies taking orders so ordering was quick; the wait for the food to arrive was very long. I got the spicy seafood udon with standard spice, which took nearly 25 minutes. I would not recommend coming here during a work lunch because you will be rushing through your meal, as that was our experience. While the spicy seafood udon is delicious, the soup serving is small. A pro is that there is large shrimp in the soup and lots of baby clams. For a standard spice level, the soup was surprisingly very savory and spicy. Normally when I order something spicy at a Japanese restaurant, I expect the flavor to not actually be spicy. The udon comes with a fried rice ball with a cheese filling on the side. You should toss the rice ball in the broth to soak up all the flavor and eat it because the ball itself is very hard. In terms of price, the food is expensive for the portion. The restaurant itself is very small so I highly recommend arriving early wait or to put yourself on the Yelp waitlist. The parking lot is shared with other businesses in the plaza, so you might have to do a few loops if it's a busy time of day.
