We saw this place about a month ago when we were in the strip mall at another eatery. Today, hubby…read moresuggested we try it for lunch on the way home from a morning meeting in the area. On entering at about 12:20 p.m. the buffet that's supposed to begin at noon was just being set up. So we decided to wait and try it. At about 12: 40 p.m. it was ready. I would try to use the proper names of the dishes in the buffet but I am afraid I am going to get them wrong. So it's easier to name the main ingredients. The beef stew (nihari) was very pleasing to the eye but not the palate. It was very dry. The cowfoot stew is probably an acquired taste. But the bits of tendons fell easily off the bone and were tasty. The vegetarian options were the best with a potato dish made of squares of potato in a curry gravy, a chic peas stew, a scrambled egg and vegetable mixture (anda bhaji--that was my favorite), and a (sweet) potato casserole that served nicely as a dessert for the meal. You can get rice, naan, paratha, and pouri to accompany your meal. We got one of each and shared them. The restaurant seats about 25 or more. We were the first ones there but the place soon filled. At one point, of the 16 patrons having lunch, we were the only ones that didn't seem to be of Pakistani descent. A table of men all had burgers, but I am not sure what kind. The restaurant sells a few kinds and special ones. I only saw three people working at Khan Baba. Two who came out from the back once or twice (cooks?) and young man who did all the work up front (take orders, serve, etc.). I guess because he was alone, tables were not being cleared as he concentrated on fetching meals, breads, drinks, and ringing up those who wanted to leave. The lunch buffet was $16.95 each and worth it.

But that was almost two decades ago, and since then, a couple of others (Bombay Grill, Indian Chilies, to name a few) have come and gone. Hopefully, this eatery will be here for a awhile. Because the food and service are extremely good. The place is clean and decorated like a banquet hall ready to host a special occasion. My friend and I had a Saturday buffet lunch here. We were never offered a menu, so I don't know if one could order a separate dish. But we gladly sifted through the offerings, tasting all that appealed to us. There was soup, samosas, tandoori, biryani, lentil dishes, plain basmati rice, two kinds of potatoes, butter chicken, a chicken curry, and others, as well as sweet cheese balls for dessert. They even offered a milky masala tea. And your meal comes with dosas and naan. I loved the slightly spicy tamarind chutney, one of a few sauces, available. I especially liked the soup, samosa, tender tandoori chicken, the biryani, and the dalwa. I gobbled up my dosa and naan dousing them in tamarind chutney. The weekend lunch buffet (Saturday and Sunday only) is $22.95 and with tax and tip it costs close to $30. The restaurant does have a weekday lunch plate that is $13.99 that comes with a choice of an entree (selected from a list) and some sides. I am hoping to try that next.

When we first arrived, we were the only people inside. The restaurant was larger than it appeared from the street/outside. All the tables were covered in white table linens. There was a regular menu plus some lunch specials as well as a combo lunch special plate advertised on a table placard. The lunch specials were very well priced and appealing, but we decided to go with the special combo as it included both naan and rice and a drink/soda. The combo plate had 2 pieces of plain naan and fluffy basmati rice in the center, then sections with spicy lentil dahl, roasted tandoori chicken on the bone topped with raw onions, a fried samosa (stuffed with potatoes?) appetizer that was a bit spicy, creamy butter chicken (white meat chunks) in a savory sauce, and for dessert: sweet gulab jamun. Everything was quite good. We even took a bit of our lunch home for a later meal. My husband enjoyed a hot milk chai (tea) and I just had a soda for my included drink. While we were dining, we got to watch/hear some Bollywood style videos on the large screen TV. It was a good background to our meal. We had good service. We liked everything on the combo. And we'd love to come back to try their weekend buffet.

A restaurant can't always shine to the best of its ability with take out. But Maharaja has won me over in one night of take out! And ruined me for all other Indian restaurants I have had in the past. Not a single meal I've ever had in any Indian restaurant before tonight holds a candle to Maharaja, and I sincerely mean that. I can't wait to return and dine in. The inside is so lovely too. Tonight I had yellow lentil soup, the Maharaji Karahi chicken, and butter naan. I recommend all of it.

Since Maharaja seemed to be the only Indian place nearby, we figured they got their snacks there. The eatery offers indoor and outdoor dining. And the decor is eclectic and cool. We were the only ones in the restaurant for a while on a Sunday at lunchtime, but soon we were joined by other diners. And like the passengers in the car, they, too, were South Asian. To me, this was a great sign. Our server was extremely polite. And she asked several times if the food was good and if we needed anything. We also got complimentary Indian crackers before our meals. And were given free warm cheese balls for dessert. We ordered the goat korma and the lamb maharaja, both medium spicy, for our meals. The goat was tender but the korma sauce was creamier than expected and a bit sweet with actual bits of raisins. The lamb maharaja was spicier than a medium level. But oh so good with a great tomato sauce that offered a scintillating tingle to our tongues. It was definitely the standout entree. And everything came to the table piping hot, including the dessert cheese ball. We were disappointed with our order of naan. It was flat and tasteless. We've had better naan from a grocery store package. While the food definitely was very good, we thought the prices were a bit high. Our entrees were close to $30 each. And the portions were decent but not ample. Lunch for 2 with 2 entrees, an order of naan, tax, and tip, was $80.
