Heard the name of this restaurant a few times from a friend who raved about it's mixture of culinary cuisine. Well, today I finally had the opportunity to personally taste the hype. Two huge aluminum trays of chicken and vegetable fried rice were picked up from The Hibiscus and transported to a private pumpkin carving pool party in my subdivision for ten hungry guests. The chicken was tender with a lightly seasoned skin and packed a welcoming flavor. I dabbed the chicken with a red pepper sauce which unexpectedly sent shocking heat through my veins and quickly switched to a mild soy sauce for my second plate. As I scrolled through the extensive online menu, there were a few items that sounded appealing including the Jerk Wings, Lamb Chow Mein and Ox Tail. Truly a disappointment to carribean food. This was my second time and this place food served not even a dog would have enjoyed it! please get it together.. the emptiness of your restaurant surely can't be because people love the food you serve! It's clear that the roti you serve looks the color of paper bag fry rice. Where you get flour that is brown is my question other than it's frozen and old as hell. I don't have an issue with paying for anything my issue is when people take advantage, they know who the regulars are vs first timers and to pass on your old stale food was a wrong move. What I like about this restaurant is that they serve all the traditional Indian curry dishes(chicken, lamb, beef, seafood, fish) including "Doubles", "Poulaurie" , and other appetizers. Came to this spot with my friend who's Guyanese. I am always down to try food from different countries so this was the spot. From the moment you walk in they have music playing. You can tell this is a spot for people from Guyana because a lot of people knew each other. The food was great and so was the service. Not a bad place. Quite clean, nice service- bartender was very friendly and the waitresses were very pleasant. It's mainly a Guyanese menu (and I'm Trinidadian ) so I can't say how authentic it was Over all, the price point is excellent, not many veggie options but offer large enough portions. I ordered chicken in de ruff fried rice and fried bangamary for take out. The chicken had a nice flavor, but definitely not as good as before. The rice was a little dry. And the fish lacked any flavor whatsoever. Still it was all enjoyable since we don't get this food where we live. The lady who took the order was very nice and personable. The guy who took payment and gave me the food did not interact with me at all. The restaurant is more like a bar with loud music and several TVs. If I do return, it will be for takeout again. Gripe - unreasonable surcharge for credit cards. This is unacceptable especially with payments processors charging way less than that. Plus the global trend is going cashless. Small businesses can do better than adding this unreasonable charge which just serves to minimize the experience. read more

When I lived in NYC, I always frequented Hibiscus in Queens. Not sure if there's any relationship to the restaurant in NYC, but I decided to try and it did not disappoint. I ordered the Peking Duck, Lo Mein, Chow Mein, Veggie Fried Rice, Steamed wontons and the Fried Chicken Wings. All items were incredibly delicious. If you go here you MUST try the fried rice and the duck. This gave me a little taste of Guyanese/Trini-Chinese food that I'm accustomed to. My only feedback is to add a little more seasoning to the steamed wontons. Other than that, Hibiscus is an incredibly authentic Caribbean Chinese food spot. It is representative of our very diverse cuisine that we have in the Caribbean. Next visit, I'll check them out for happy hour and some cutters! read more

This is the first time I walked into this place upon the recommendation from somebody I know. When I arrived. I was immediately greeted with a friendly smile, usual pleasantries. The location is a combination bar/restaurant situated in a small strip center just to the west of Lowe's. I had one mission today, and that was to order a roti, and since I haven't had one in a while, I was salivating for it took about 20 minutes, which is typical when they make it fresh, and I took it to go. I had about a 20-mile trip ahead of me when I arrived at my destination. I was pleasantly surprised the food was still warm. As I unwrapped it, the anticipation of biting into a roti was driving me crazy I would say it would be similar to a child eating into a piece a cake for the first time. As I took my first bite, I found a taste that I was yearning for, and that did not disappoint. Very small place offering both trini dishes and Guyanese dishes I would recommend order ahead because the place is very small inside they do carry a full bar of alcohol I would recommend the Trinidad blood pudding , the calamari style fried chicken which I don't think is on the menu and the shrimp fried wontons for food I would recommended chicken on the ruff which comes with fried rice really big portions. read more

This is my first time at this new location after they moved from sunrise. I had higher expectations for the quality of the food. I've been going to Hibiscus since I was a teenager. I'm not entirely sure what happened but food quality is down the drain. Of course you can still enjoy their full bar and music but that's about it. The directions are kinda sketchy. I head out one Saturday morning hungry looking for the place and doing donuts in the parking lot before I notice that a trail of cars keeps passing me and going deep within the plaza. I really have a love/hate with Florida's plazas. Walking in the place seems more like a sports bar than a Caribbean restaurant. Tv's on the walls play a variety of college football games, large pool tables to the right, and a full stock bar with people already seated with drinks before 1pm. I'm greeting almost immediately when entering. It was probably because they noticed me doing those donuts in the parking lot. I take a menu and review while checking out the scene. Big speakers near the bar blast soca music. I was still in recovery mood from Miami Carnival so it took every ounce of self control not to start whining up on the gentleman to my right. Gyal wine up pon me body gyal! The service is excellent. But the wait it long. I was think 30 minutes or less that I would be able to step out. Close to an hour later I'm digging into food that I had planned on taking to a friend's to share. I instead told them to meet me at the volunteering area. No shame! I was starving and they are prone to be late! The portion sizes are huge. I ate a meal before I left the restaurant. Another a few hours later. And still had a left over meal the following day. Now the quality of the food was just okay.Bhajee, Spinach, and Pumpkin with white rice. I know some wild vegan Guyanese. When they cook, it's the kind that makes you lose sensation of your tongue. This one had no heat at all. Very tasty but more British in flavoring than I wanted. But it got better with every try and this place is worthy of a visit, just make sure expectations are in check. Unfortunately South Florida is not the place for good west indian food. Hibiscus is no exception. The Pepper Shrimp (Fried) batter was rubbery and chewy, it looks like it was days old. The Chicken Fried Rice was not very good. The chicken was dry and over cooked, the rice was plain with frozen carrots and green peas, very little effort went into making this dish. Service was slow, food took forever to come out and it was cold. Decor was old and cheesy looking, too much pink. The blacked out windows makes you feel like you are in a bad part of town. read more

Very disappointed in the food. After diving 1-15 mins to get there i ordered the goat curry and Chinese style chicken along with some veggie dishes. I am not sure but i thin they must have changed their cook. I ordered the same dishes i had a few weeks ago but this time it lacked taste. Maybe the food was leftovers from the day before and they recooked but everything was off with these dishes. The goat curry, tasted like long water curry, no taste. The roti had black ring around it. This is a solid 3.8 stars for me rounded to 4, to say it's a dive is an understatement as it really has that divey quality to it. However, the service was friendly, and the portions plentiful! Trini-Chinese is new to me, and although I've had Indian-Chinese before, Trini-Chinese is definitely different. I had two vegetarian options and the fried fish appetizer. The dahl roti was excellent, the fish was great but if you're not fond of bones you'll be very unhappy. The aloo and channa and tomato poka were very good. I also drank fresh coconut juice and cream soda which was different from American style cream soda since it was clear. I'll definitely have to come back and try their other offerings, they have a big menu and the food seems promising. It's not gourmet by any means but it's cooked to order, and very flavorful. If you're not turned off by the divey quality and the slower service (slow because the food takes time to cook) then I suggest giving this a try. You'll find it's pretty good. read more

I used to frequent here a lot and the food is usually very good. Today I decided to stop in because I was close by. As others have mentioned this place is NOT a 5 star restaurant. Infact its a bar and a restaurant and sometimes a club Lol. I walked in today and had to wait about ten minutes. There was NO ONE in sight. One older guy walked out from the side 5 minutes in and looked around, tried to call someone, then looked and me and walked back into the hallway. As I was about to get up, the lone waitress comes out and takes my order. I got it pretty quickly due to luck of someone else ordering the same thing and hadn't come for it yet. The food wasn't that great anymore. I got the Chicken in the Ruff. It's not as tasty as i remember it being but you do get a lot of food that can be two meals for someone.
