I was really happy to find this spot. I've been familiar with Haitian cuisine for many years, so I'm always excited when I come across a place serving good, authentic Haitian food. The grill tasted very fresh and flavorful. They also serve a gravy on the side which was surprisingly good -- and that's saying a lot because I'm usually not much of a gravy person. The pikliz was tasty; my only complaint is that I would have liked a little more of it, although that may have just been something I should have checked before leaving. The rice was excellent. It had a really nice flavor with a slightly peppery finish and honestly stood out as some of the better rice I've had at a Haitian restaurant. They also offer a house tea that goes along with the name Choublak (which the owner Marcus mentioned means hibiscus). The tea contains sorrel and is definitely worth trying if you visit. Another thing I appreciated was seeing a hands-on owner. Marcus is both the owner and the chef, and it shows in the attention to the food and the way he interacts with customers. Overall, if you're looking to try Haitian food, this is a great spot to check out. I've been a longtime customer here and have even left rave reviews in the past. This used to be one of those places you could count on. The whole fried snapper was outstanding. Fresh, clean, bold. You could taste the love in every bite. It felt like a true family-run spot that took real pride in what they served. I'm sad to say it's fallen off. The fish now tastes old. Not fresh, not crisp, just off. The griot isn't fresh anymore either. It tastes like it's been sitting out, made in batches without any care. Even the pikliz tastes commercialized, like something out of a container instead of made in-house. The diri djon djon is bland and flavorless, and even the color is pale. The consistency is gone, and the attention to detail that made this place special just isn't there anymore. The people working the register come off rude and uninviting. There's no care for customers, no welcoming smile like there used to be. Something clearly changed. Whether it's ownership, the kitchen, or just standards slipping, it shows. I'm not writing this to tear the place down. I've seen what it can be when it's right, and it was genuinely great. I hope this isn't permanent and that things turn around. Walked in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The menu on the table did not have prices. Owner showed us to a standing kiosk where we could order. But the menu on the kiosk did not match the one on the table. Plus the kiosk had the menu for several restaurants. It was very confusing. It was just a mess. A diner should be able to see the meal, the prices, and what's included without running all over the place. The menus on the table were new. Why not include the prices and a description of the meal? UberEats Buy 1 Get 1 Free, issue that needs to be corrected. I go on the UberEats app and order the 'Kodenn Nan Sos (Stew Turkey)' Buy 1 Get 1 Free meal. In the description, it states the meal comes with THREE options which the patron will pick 1 from. The stewed turkey will either come with... Option 1: White Rice and Beans with Plantains. OR Option 2: Plantains Only; No Rice. OR Option 3: Mixed Rice (Diri Kole) and Beans with Plantains. (Which is written very simple and easy to understand.) As a patron, I decide I want the stewed turkey to come with White Rice, Beans and Plantains which is OPTION 1, per the description. However, there is NO OPTION 1 button/selection for me to choose. It's only Option 2: 'Green Plantains Only (No Rice)' and Option 3: 'Diri Kole (Mixed Rice and Beans)' which I find confusing and frustrating. But Thank God for the special instructions section, because I decide to write in Haitian Creole "Tanpri, eske mwen ka gen diri blan ak sos pwa? Mwen pa ka chwazi li sou aplikasyon an." TRANSLATION: "Please, may I have white rice and beans? I cant choose it on the app." I, then call the restaurant twice but it said the line was disconnected. The restaurant owner calls, (a man) and tells me that the Buy 1 Get Free deal doesn't come like that. Meaning, I would only get the Stew Turkey and Plantains Only. So If I wanted the White Rice Beans and Plantains, I would have to add White Rice and Beans which is an additional charge. (So why put in the description that there are 3 options to pick from??? with only 2 selections?) I told him, the description says its 3 options to pick from, I also tell him that its confusing as a patron, expecting all 3 options to be there but I have to manually add the option that isnt there. He states he can give me the rice and beans as a 1 time courtesy thing, but also tells me I'm the only one that has had this issue. So from there, I lose my appetite and unfortunately patronize, because to put in the description that there are 3 options that come with the food but yet, I as the patron, has to manually add what SHOULD have ALREADY be in the selection, doesn't make sense. If there are only 2 buttons which are for 'Plantains only No Rice' and 'Diri Kole with Beans and Plantains', than REMOVE White Rice with Beans and Plantains from the description OR OR OR inform that Option 1: White Rice Beans and Plantains has to be manually added by going back to the Menu. As an actual Haitian myself who will argue a person down about Haitian food, this experience left a bad taste in my mouth and was overall, disappointing. I was in the mood for Haitian spot and while driving I saw this spot and it peaked my interest. The space is a decent size. It's clean. It definitely gives island vibes. Parking is super easy. I ordered the following: kremas, macaroni o'gratin, and fritay with boulèt. The kremas was excellent - made to perfection. The fritay was good; however, the boulèt lacked the flavor I expected from a Haitian dish! I was disappointed with the macaroni o'gratin - I would not recommend this side because it was not made the traditional way. Grated cheese was added on top of it and let me tell you, it was not good. Although this food experience at Choublak is not on top of my list, the service and ambiance made up for it. The food portion is great but ever time I order from Choublak. I am having to remove at least 2-4 oz of oil that's just sitting on top of my food. Really impressed with this restaurant. We ordered Griot, Fried Snapper, Stewed Turkey, Legume, and Mac & Cheese. Everything was great, but I know I will be coming back for their fried snapper. They only had the large snapper in stock, so it was a little pricey, but it could easily feed 2-3 people. It was delicious and seasoned all the way to the bone. The griot was my next favorite item. Plus their pikliz was so good! They also served another spicy sauce, but I don't know what it's called. (It looked like hummus, but it was habanero flavored.) Again, really tasty. Ok so i found this place on google reviews. There were 26 reviews with an average of 4.9 stars.... So I wanted to find out for myself what the hype was about. I wanted to find a new Haitian restaurant that's not too too far from me & this is the place i ended up at. I'm not mad at this place at all they have a friendly staff, great options, big portion sizes and a perfect location, but the food needs a little bit more. I ordered a Legume (stewed mixed vegetables) and Ke Beof (oxtail) for dinner.. Listen as a Haitian American you never ever buy legume really from a restaurant unless you know the cook and they are consistent. This was the first time i ever bought legume from a restaurant. My mother always makes it home made or a family member... because this dish is very hard to do. The Legume needed more acid (lime, sour orange) something to give it life but it was pretty good. I mean it's not my top 6 but they did the dish some justice.. It comes with 2 sides which usually people get white rice and beans and they also threw in three banan peze (fried plantain) which was not crisp enough.I also got the Oxtails which I personally think needed to be simmered longer and needed some additional flavor it wasn't bland by far but it wasn't giving me what I needed it to give for oxtails, to be frank with you, It needed to be cooked longer. Everything comes as is when you order a meal you can't substitute/ customize your order according to the lady I spoke to on the phone. I think she was the owner and her approach was kind of one sided and stand off ish when telling me this but I'm only disregarding this because the actual lady at the counter was super nice... I'm only mentioning this because it is rare to not have some sort of customization at a Haitian restaurant, but it's their place of business so I get it.. The place was empty when I came in but then again it was around 3:30 pm ish on a Wednesday... I also think it's a fairly new restaurant. I always love to support small businesses and this business has a lot of potential. Would I recommend this place it wouldn't be in my top 5 choice of Haitian Restaurants in Broward County but with the array of dishes this place has potential to come up into the limelight. Moreover the decor is also really nice and inviting. The placement of the tables and chairs and also the vivid colors throughout this restaurant gives you a type of authentic feeling. Just visited this restaurant tonight, I had legumes and beef but the meat was goat mixed with beef which was a weird combination. I ate at this restaurant before everything was good, which is why I went back. One other thing that I did not like was the food is expensive and on top of it the restaurant charges a 15% gratuity for seating I had no problem with it, since I thought it would have benefited the patrons but I was told it was not, thus I may frequent this restaurant as often as I would like to. I could easily go to an American restaurant and have good food and tip a patron 15 to 20 %, since I can cook Haitian food myself. It is a nice atmosphere but it's not out of norm! Lovely restaurant. Convenient free parking in strip plaza. Very colorful decor, clean and neat dining area. After sitting at table of my choice, I reviewed printed menu that was in a stand on the table. After a few minutes, the server came over and quietly asked if I was ready to order. The English translation of each dish is in very small print, pretty much illegible for my aging eyes so I asked server for her recommendations and if there were any specials. She replied she was allergic to seafood so hadn't eaten some menu offerings. I put in my drink request and asked for a few more minutes to decide on my meal. The griot (fried pork) and rice and peas I eventually chose were delicious, generous portions, perfectly seasoned. Appetizingly presented on/in white plate and bowl with pops of color from artfully arranged, slivers of green and red peppers, red onions, etc.--signs of preparation by someone who cares for their craft and customer. I enjoyed the sauce but the pikliz is a bit too spicy for me so I let that be. There's a no rush, relaxed vibe, televisions playing but at low volume. Several takeout customers picked up orders while I dined in. Too late, I noticed the chalkboard wall listed all the lunch specials ($8.99) with chalk drawings explaining what the various menu items were. So unfortunately I paid full price for a meal that was available at much lower cost as a daily lunch special. Let's start with the good. The food was excellent. The grilled goat was a bit spicy but my son powered through (because he is so greedy...lol). The price was a bit high, but everything is going up so I'll give that a pass. The staff was very pleasant. The only negative was wait time. Almost 30 mins to get served our food. He gets up after a few seconds drops his phone on the floor, tries to pick it up, someone calls he decides to talk to the person while waking to the counter. So I figure ok this is the person taking my order. Didn't say hello when I came in since he's the one working there. Finally says hello when he gets off the phone. Visited for the first time on a Sunday early evening. The place was mostly empty which allowed us to take in the decor and cleanliness of the room. It was neat, orderly, no overwhelming smells, Haitian music quietly playing from the tv; decor was simple and bright. My party ordered griot (fried pork chunks), tasso (fried turkey) and fried snapper and waited about 25 minutes to be served. All meals came with pikliz, black rice and beans and fried green plantain. The fish came lightly battered And fried crisp. It was huge; enough for 3 people to taste plus leftovers. the Tasso was probably the best thing ordered. It was moist, tender, and fried so well it had lightly crispy bits all over. When I come back, this is what I'll order (although I want to try the legumes too). The griot was....ehh. I wouldn't come here for it again. A bit too dry, could have been more flavorful and the little bit of pikliz they serve was not enough to take it up a notch. All things said, this is a cute, clean spot across the street from Home Depot that has decent food, generous portions and reasonably competitive prices.
