Last week I came to Konakai after a car salesman from Peru recommended the place. He made the place sound so delicious and fun that we left the dealership in Sunrise and came here. Once we arrived I realized we have been here before... It's been about 10 years and my memory from back then was good food and nice atmosphere. And now we're back.... a Friday night and they have some outside tables available (if you wanted some quieter atmosphere) because inside was dinner drinking and karaoke... we had a table good for hubby and I to watch. There was a large group (a party of some sorts) and a lot of great singers; and so many people jumped up to dance along with many of the songs. We tried a couple of varieties of the peruvian classic drink, Pisco Sour... once traditional and one with a mango twist. They were very good (not my thing but very good for what they are). We shared one of their ceviches (amazing) I ordered Tacu Taco with chicken and my husband got some seafood dish; I can't remember what it was called but I know we could've shared one dish since the servings are huge. Konakai is located in a plaza right next to the movie theater, with plenty of parking, and every time I pass by it always looks lively and packed , so I finally decided to check it out on a weekday. The vibe did not disappoint. They play great music, the atmosphere is fun, and the service was friendly. The only thing that threw me off a bit was the timing of the food. I received my dish first, but it took about 10 more minutes for the person I was dining with to get theirs. I also noticed the same thing happening at a few tables around us, so it seems like the kitchen was running a little behind that day. Now, the food itself? Delicious. I ordered the shrimp ceviche, which was fresh and flavorful, and the filet mignon lomo saltado. The steak was a bit tough to chew, but the flavor of the sauce was spot on and really well seasoned. Overall, despite the slight delay with the dishes, I enjoyed the meal and would come back to try more. Their Peruvian-Asian fusion options sound especially interesting, and I'd love to explore more of the menu. read more

Came in for Father's Day with my family of 7. The food was super delicious. I had the Lomo saltado with beef, onions, tomatoes, fries, and white rice. For dessert we ate the caramel flan and the Peruvian dessert Chocolucuma (fruit pudding with chocolate cake as a base). Yum! On another note, it was really hot inside. DO NOT EAT HERE. I paid for my to-go order of food with Apple Pay, the money came out of my account but it showed on their end that the bill was not settled- probably a transaction glitch from what I've researched. BUT then the worker accused me of having the food already and said I could not leave without paying. I NEVER RECEIVED THE FOOD, IT WAS STILL IN THE KITCHEN. So they went from accusing me of taking the food and saying I can't leave to saying they can't give me the food unless I pay again. I refused. Then the so called owner comes over to tell me he doesn't want to deal with me, it's the end of the night. Please be careful eating here. They do not treat people like how normal family owned businesses treat Sunrise residents. Just awful. I didn't get my food and my 30 dollars was taken from account. Went here Sunday night. Shortly before closing. The staff was SUPER FRIENDLY. Even got to meet the manager. The server HIGHLY recommended the Passion Roll (Sushi), the was beyond delicious and a big roll. For dinner we had the Pago A Lo Macho (Snapper Fish with Seafood Sauce) and Churasco A Lo Macho (Steak with Seafood Sauce). The food was EXCELLENT. I SHALL RETURN. My girl and I dined there tonight after leaving the movies next door. Not sure what to expect we were blown away , the atmosphere is very cozy date night vibes and the food was fresh and delicious. Trying an app each we were almost full by the time our entrees came. Looking at the prices u wouldn't realize how large the portions are. I would say almost (Family Style). She loves Asian and I am fond of traditional Peruvian and we were both satisfied. Me met the owner in the mid point of our meal and he recommended 2 sauces that took the dishes to the next level. Friday night date night with my wife. Decided to try out Konakai, which is right down the street from our house. Checked the reviews, and they looked good. Except for that one complaint about the long wait for service and food. We decided to brush it aside and take a chance! Upon arrival we were immediately seated. There were two other tables seated when we arrived. In the middle of the restaurant was a large table with three people sitting at it. It appeared they were waiting for the rest of their party to arrive. We order our food. Wife gets a ceviche with a Peruvian beer. I ordered the Konakai platter. As we wait for our food, another table is seated, a couple of people join the large table in the middle of the restaurant. Three servers mill about, taking orders and attending to the growing table in the center. Dish after dish leaves the kitchen, dispatched for tables other than ours. After about 15 minutes, my wife's ceviche arrives. She digs in and comments that the dish is quite good. A couple of sips from her beer and I'm still waiting for my food. I watch as more people join the center table with what looks like a large family and their children. Possibly affiliated with the owner of the restaurant I'm guessing. More food leaves the kitchen. More food is placed at the center table. I wave down my server, who mind, you hasn't come over once to check on us. I asked politely when my order will be ready and she assures me it will be soon. More people. More food for people other than me. It's been about 30 minutes now and I've just watched my wife finish her food and drink. This is where I get up and tell our server to just box my order to go and give us our check. Our server tries to apologize and say that the large party placed orders ahead of time. I told her that was unacceptable and how can the restaurant send out one dish and not another for the same table? A little behind, I could understand. But it took about 40 minutes for my food to arrive. The ceviche is already cold. It could have waited to come out with my dish. The entire restaurant had food on their tables except for me. I looked around and was fuming at this point. Asked for the check, paid and promptly left. Got home and tried to eat something after losing my appetite from such a crappy experience. My Konakai platter was mediocre at best. Soupy mix of vegetables and triple meats. Nothing special. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place. I mean, if you want to wait forever to get served (at the same time) and eat an overpriced meal. Go for it. read more

When you walk into this restaurant it gives a classy feel yet warm and inviting. The staff is very kind and welcoming. I recommend getting the jug of chicha morada which was delicious. The portions were generous and prices fair. Overall a good experience and would like to come back. Some of the servers do speak Spanish which if you go to eat with Spanish speakers like my parents this becomes highly helpful. read more

Absolutely the worst service I have ever had. We ordered ceviche. It didn't come for awhile. I saw that a few minutes before the ceviche was placed at another table. About 10 minutes later the waitress goes to the other table and brings me that ceviche. I told her no way! I saw the dish sitting with someone talking over the dish for 10 minutes. If I wouldn't have seen it she would have gotten away with it. That was the beginning of the end. Downhill from there because they made the same mistake again and laughed about it. If this place doesn't change the wait staff completely, they will be closed in a year. read more

My family and I have been coming to this restaurant for many years. We live in Colorado, but every time we come to Florida, we come here to eat and have always loved the quality of the food. Recently, this place has gone through a renovation, and this place looks fantastic and modern now. They have also expended, so they have a lot more room than they used to, and it looks really elegant as well. The tables and chairs received a much needed update as well and looked beautiful. We have always received amazing service every time we have come to this place and have always appreciated that, and that has not changed to this day. This was our first time in this restaurant and this place was great! My husband ordered the ceviche and he loved it. For appetizers we ordered anticucho (cow's heart), it came with some potatoes and it was marinated well and wonton frito (fried wonton) was crunchy and had enough beef filling inside. For our main entrees we ordered the special house wonton soups, tallarín saltado Konakai special and special fried rice. The soup was filled with shrimp, pork, quail eggs and veggies. I really enjoyed the broth. Tallarín saltado (fried noodles) and arroz frito (fried rice) both were house special so it came with lots of protein and veggies. My mom liked the noodles better and I liked the rice better. But they were both delicious. The service was very friendly and they were mindful for us to order first since there was a huge family that came after us. The restaurant has a nice ambiance with mini lights at each table and they are still remodeling or expanding the restaurant so I can't wait to see the end product! After going to a movie at the AMC theater next door, we stopped into this restaurant for a late dinner. The place is small but we noticed signs stating that they're expanding which is pretty cool. As for the food, we had just returned from a trip to Peru and we're craving Peruvian food. It was getting cooler outside so we wanted a soup and saw a wonton soup which we ordered to share and this was pretty good. It had a combo of pork, chicken, shrimp and of course wontons. For my meal I ordered the arroz chaufa de pollo which is pretty much chicken fried rice. My hubby ordered Tallarin a la huancaina with lomo saltado which I tried some for the sake of reviewing it lol. My take on all dishes were they were good and tasty. There were slight differences that I missed but I think that's cause I was used to eating the food in Peru the last two weeks and it's hard to replicate that. One item I noticed a slight difference in was a side of salsa criolla I had ordered. This is red onion sliced julienne style seasoned with lemon juice salt pepper and tossed with tomatoes and in some places a hot red pepper. The trick to this salad is to wash the red onion really well so that the "bitterness" of the onion doesn't come through as much. While in Peru I enjoyed much of this salsa criolla and noticed that here the onion was sliced julienne but a little thicker that what I had been accustomed to and the there was a slight bitterness from the onion that came through the flavor and overpowered the "dressing". We'd like to return and try other dishes and check out their expansion. read more

A friend recommended so we grabbed a few plates from here. Mixed Cevice, Paella Dish and Aroz Con Mariscos. I was excited becauae i've never tried peruvian food and i'm visiting from LA. The ceviche was good although small portion but good, the paella was prob the best, the noodle dish ruined everything. As soon as I took a bite of the chicken I could tell it was spoiled. They remade the dish and once again bad chicken. I wouldn't have to give a bad review if they didnt give my friend a hard time but she asked for a refund or another dish and they refused. read more

Terrible Experience - Rotten Food and Awful Service I've been a regular customer at Konakai Restaurant in Sunrise, but after my recent experience, I will never go back. I ordered the Tallarij Setaldo Especial, and the chicken was rotten. When I asked them to remake it, they refused at first. After multiple attempts to explain the situation (and mentioning that I frequently order from them and refer others), they begrudgingly agreed to redo the dish. To my shock, the chicken in the remake was also rotten! I expressed my concern about potential salmonella, but they seemed completely indifferent. I asked for a manager, and they claimed there wasn't one present. When I asked for someone in charge, they said "no one" but reluctantly admitted it might be the server herself. The owner, I was told, only comes in on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Also I was told that the owner was in constant communication with the staff about my issue--yet she outright said she didn't care. This was beyond frustrating and unprofessional. I ended up paying $30 for a rotten dish that they took back from me--no refund, no store credit, they even took the meal back, absolutely nothing. To top it off, I tipped 18% despite this being a pickup order because I live next door and wanted to support them. This is how they treat loyal customers? The server even refused to taste the dish when I asked her to verify the issue. This was hands-down the worst experience I've ever had. I'd rather throw away $30 than eat their rotten chicken and risk food poisoning. Avoid this place at all costs! read more

Had lunch here and the price of $12- $13 for lunch menu was so affordable even tho they just recently raised the price. The service was a little slow both times I went. Food was fresh and delicious. Jalea, a mixed deep fried seafood was nice and crispy. It came with 2 creamy dipping sauces. I really liked the one that was a little spicy. Second time I went there, I tried Pescado a la Chorillana, a fried fish with some kind of red sauce. The fish was fresh and very soft. It came with plenty of red onion which was a plus for me. My friend ordered Lomo Saltado and he loved it. I really enjoyed the food here and I'll keep coming back to try everything. Pisco sour was strong and refreshing. Wanted to update my last review since their latest expansion. Konakai bought out the space next to them giving them more room for dining which is nice although at the moment I unfortunately don't believe they can handle the volume. They did get all new tables and chairs as well to give it a more elevated look & loved their new tikis outside the entrances! We were seated promptly but had to wait a while for pretty much everything else afterwards; waited to order drinks & had enough time that we knew what we wanted to order food wise too so gave it all at once. Food didn't take too long but waited a while until server came around to order dessert & that actually did take a while to come out. At one point a lady, not sure if another server or manager, came over to ask us if we'd been taken care of and if someone took our order (we had half empty drinks on the table at the time so I thought it was visibly obvious someone's at least taken our drink order) and just let her know yes and that we were just waiting on dessert. She had offered a free coffee which was nice but we didn't take it. The food is always amazing but if they expanded to be able to take more tables I hope they find ways to handle the new expected volume a little more efficiently. I'm from Texas vacationing in Florida and decided to try this magnificent restaurant. The owner was outstanding, very knowledgeable on the history of Peruvian dishes, and very attentive to his customers. The food is A++++ it was so good I decided to bring back to Texas one of their plates, Chaufa which is fried rice the Peruvian way! Delicious!!!! This is a wonderful hidden gem. A unique blend of Japanese & Peruvian flavors. Tonight my friend and I shared the tuna salad stuffed avocados and charbroiled octopus appetizers. The octopus was cooked perfectly. Additionally, we enjoyed Pisco sours, the special drink of Peru! Our waiter Paolo's service was top notch. My family and I have visited this establishment since its location on University Drive, I think more than 20 years ago. While the food is merely adequate, occasionally disappointing (steer clear of the Chaufa and the Seco), it's generally acceptable and priced competitively. Truthfully, for Peruvian cuisine, numerous other restaurants come to mind first. However, my concern lies elsewhere. My sister, a regular customer due to its proximity to her home, placed a takeout order for six dinners several weeks ago. The portions of a specific dish were shockingly small, upsetting us all. It's especially galling when you suspect such stinginess is reserved for takeout orders - portions they wouldn't dare present to dine-in customers for fear of immediate complaints. 0n a subsequent day, she approached the owner to inform him in a very polite way of this discrepancy, assuming he might be unaware and wishing to prevent similar issues for other patrons. Instead of gratitude, the owner responded by loudly accusing her of lying! Having learned of this incident just a few days ago, I have cautioned my sister against such solo interaction, given the potential for some men, such as this individual, to act cowardly and abusive towards women they perceive as alone, not matter how nice they approach them. I just know this man wouldn't have acted that way if I was there. Being the lady she is, my sister didn't respond to this bully and simply left the place. We are a large family - seven siblings and numerous extended relatives. I am now strongly recommending that each of them boycott this establishment. Despite my usual preference for other Peruvian restaurants, I wouldn't have hesitated to dine here if it were convenient. Not anymore. read more
