This was the worst experience I have had in a long time! I couldn't even get past the hostesses to get into the restaurant. Not a big party 4 and a high chair asked to sit inside. NOT COMPLICATED. After waiting for 40 min(on a 30-35 min wait). I went to them and asked about how much longer it would be. He clarified that we wanted to sit inside and said he was getting something ready maybe 5 min. When he called us back up after 3-4 min he said follow me outside!? I then referred to the conversation that we just had and said we asked to be inside the girl then said that somehow we were down for first available and started arguing with me. We then left. If this was my business and had seen this interaction both of the childish hostesses would be looking for a new job and I would have chased down the customers! This is also the second time that something like this has happened and will never even attempt to support this local business again. read more

Found this place on a road trip from Fort Worth to San Diego. It was listed on Bring Fido and we had our dog with us. Stopped for lunch on a Saturday. Seated immediately outside by very friendly people. They brought our dog water right away without asking. Keith was our server and was great. I had the SW Caesar Salad with grilled chicken, spicy dried mango, and polenta croutons. My husband had a steak salad with avocado, shaved Parmesan, and tomatoes topped with crispy onions. The iced tea was excellent too! The location is great, it's in an old hotel and looked like the nightlife was probably great too! read more

We just had brunch and I can say without a moment's hesitation it was one of the most enjoyable meals I've ever had the pleasure of eating. I had Baked Eggs with the addition of avocado and green chilis at the suggestion of our fantastic waiter Keith. Other dishes ordered were an omelet which was reported as very good, eggs and trout reported as both perfectly cooked and "out of this world", and huevos rancheros, also spectacular. The service was excellent. Our waiter was attentive with worthwhile suggestions, which we took, while being extremely busy in the packed restauant. The restaurant was full, a normal Sunday occurrence according to Keith, and noisy. There was a very good jazz band playing in the lobby. We'll happily go back often and will recommend it without reservation. read more

Wonderful atmosphere and food! Extremely tasty, great service and setting, and surprisingly affordable! I would say this was a near perfect experience, except my girlfriend and I weren't too impressed with her Bolognaise.. it was really cold for some reason. Highly recommend the special they had.. was Trout with a peach glaze dressing and a risotto side - absolutely to die for and only $20, I was amazed. Over the last year, every one and their mother (wait...let's leave the yo-mama jokes at the door), think they can run a restaurant downtown. Now we love downtown but are incessingly vexed and frustrated by the bad service and inconsistent food. In the culinary clutter the Cup stands out as a becon of simple, clean and reliable eats. So here is what we love: the depot salad. Downtowns tastiest and most filling entree salad, a lush bed of mixed greens, cheery tomatoes, sliced avocado topped with steak medallions.. The Queer Steer and Real Thing are go to favorite and perfectly accompdaed both the vegetarian and carnivore. The Ghost Orchid Cocktail is amazing as is late night picacho nachos. The revolving desert case always provides ample opportunity for well chosen calories. read more

Such a fun atmosphere and amazing food. The bread was exceptional and my boyfriend and I split an appetizer and the chicken and gnocchi and it was plenty and delicious. We went on a Wednesday and they were playing a movie on a projection screen on the patio and although we were seated close to it, it was not an interruption. The food here in The Cup Cafe is excellent whether you go for dinner or lunch. I was there two days ago for lunch and they served me some exquisite butternut squash bisque. Been there for dinner as well and have yet to have any disappointing food, this is one of the better places to have a meal in Tucson. read more

I don't have much to add here that hasn't already been said. This place, and the hotel that it resides in, is a Tucson institution. Excellent breakfasts, great brunches (if you can get a seat!), delicious weekday lunches and superb bistro dinners. Tremendous history and a cool copper penny floor. Hipsters, T-locs, sleepy UA students, snowbirds, and the well-heeled that work downtown...everyone eats here. Parking can be a pain because it's downtown, but with the streetcar, now you have no excuse. read more

My husband and I have been wanting to try this café for a long time, and finally we got a chance to stop in. We had our choice of lunch or breakfast menus and we both decided to go for breakfast. I ordered the well-known baked eggs and my husband ordered the creole breakfast. We really enjoyed the atmosphere of this unique setting, and the service was very good. Sorry to say neither of us were blown away by the food. My baked eggs had a good flavor because of the Gorgonzola cheese and leeks, but the ham cubes underneath were swimming in kind of a watery sauce. The potatoes and peppers seemed under cooked to me, and the bread I got along side was completely ordinary as were those little packages of jam and jelly. My husband's creole breakfast came with mediocre sausage, gravy that didn't taste like it had been made from sausage, and biscuits that should not even be called that because they were just little mounds of dough, nothing resembling a true biscuit. Really sorry to post a negative review, But we just didn't really enjoy it that much. read more

I have eaten at the The Cup many times over the years. We had a reservation at 5:45 so we would have time to eat and then walk to the Fox Theater. While we were waiting to order a woman tried to steal my friend's purse. It was very upsetting to all of us but especially to her 6 year old daughter who hid behind a wall and was crying and inconsolably. The Cup staff immediately came to table to see if we were OK and called the police. However, the service we had after the attempted purse snatching was very poor. We had made it very clear when we sat down that we needed to order as we had a show at 7. I had to ask someone to take our order. Our food did not come until 6:30. So we tried to eat very fast as we needed to leave at 6:45 to be on time to the event. I had to ask for our checks. Given the lateness of getting our food we did not have opportunity to say anything about the quality. My friend had the butternut squash gnocchi, the gnocchi was burnt, black on one side and the chicken was so dry. The chicken fingers for the 6 year old were fake chicken. My ribs were so fatty that I only had time to eat two because it took so long to cut the fat out. The staff made no offer to comp my friends dinner, they did offer to give the child a cookie which she refused as she was still very upset. All and all it was a very uncomfortable experience. I understand that it was not the The Cup's fault that there was a thief in the dinning room area, however, they could have made sure we got our food in a timely manner and that it was cooked properly. Not a choice for dinner on a weekday. The ambiance of the cafe was not what I expect from a restaurant in Tuscon, AZ. It's as if the restaurants from the downtown scene all leech off one another. I observed that all restaurants specialty was desserts. By the giant presentation of pies at the entrance of the cafe or (like the restaurant across the street, ice cream). The menu did not have any character at all and showed no fluidity in technique or style of food. I ordered a coke, it came out 5 minutes after, flat, and with a lemon. Yes, a lemon. (Scoff) hipster thing I assume. I order an appetizer, the pork belly and Brussels sprouts. I get a cast iron skillet, filled with over baked BACON and grilled Brussel sprouts mixed together. There was zero effort in preparing this dish, it was literally just thrown together with a price tag of $8. 300% profit for them. I did not order an beer, but my friends did, and they did not have an updated beer menu and empty taps. Service was mediocre. I believe it explains why the surrounding restaurants are almost all shut down there's also a huge influx of homeless people in the downtown streets. If you want real food, visit the the restaurants with deeper roots! read more

This is such a cute restaurant situated in the Hotel Congress. I ordered the Braveheart which was so delicious. We initially took a seat outside at the 2 top table over the grate but had encountered so many flies. We ended up sitting inside with the request of staying in our waiter's section. I'm glad we did. Two friends and I go to breakfast every Saturday morning and we've been pretty much every place in town. We all agree The Cup is our fave. The food is consistently good, they keep the coffee coming, and service is always timely and delivered with a smile. The wait staff seems to enjoy working here as much as we enjoy eating here. This was our first visit to the Cup Café but won't be our last! While the Hotel Congress had a deal going on that brought a large crowd the restaurant was calm. We were seated on time. Our waiter, Matt, was attentive and informative. We started by sharing the calamari starter which was excellent. It was large and we changed our dinner thoughts because we were already filled. Regardless my wife had a house steak salad and I had the fish and chips. We enjoyed both with no exceptions. I did feel that I should have tried something more specific and telling but the fish and chips were excellent. My wife added blackened shrimp to her salad but felt that the blackening didn't complement...she would have shrimp prepared differently on that salad next time. Many other menu items were of interest and based on the quality of the food we enjoyed we're anxious to return and check out some other options. 5 stars possible after another visit or 2! read more

One word! Wow! Walked in after having coffee and tea at another cafe that just didn't do it for us. I asked could I get dessert to go and I was taken to the revolving dessert case filled with homemade, gorgeous desserts! The host personally took my order and brought it out to me at the bar where I was waiting. The bartender was extremely pleasant as well! Super impressed with the customer service I received. Now let me tell you about the desserts, INCREDIBLE! The most fresh, moist and delectable German chocolate cake we have ever tasted and we have been around! I had the cast iron baked eggs this morning, and this was the best breakfast I've had in three years in Tucson. Possibly, this was the best breakfast I have ever had. Don't let the "baked" fool you-- this is high-calorie indulgence. Two eggs are baked in cream in a four-inch cast iron pan which is then set before you. The eggs are topped with melted Gruyere that is beautifully toasted to golden and dark brown perfection. Surrounding the eggs are cream and leeks and cubed ham. I chose to drip on some Tabasco and give it all a hearty dash of black pepper and then I dipped my baguette slices in the delicious sauce. I ate the eggs last and the yolks were just the way I like them, firm with some sauce to them, like those of a soft-boiled egg. Bravo, Cup Cafe. You know how to do it right. read more

My review of The Cup is unfortunately not as good as the stars indicate. The food was great and the service was good too. The people were very nice to us. However, we had a sad experience there last week. From what we saw, the folks at The Cup would not serve a plainly dressed Hispanic gentleman sitting next to us. They made him wait a very long time for any attention, and then told him that his table had been reserved. The reserved tables (just a few) already had signs on them... his table did not have a sign. The manager then told him to get on a waiting list (there were tables open) and that they might be able to seat him in an hour. We complained to the manager who gave us all types of excuses for this distasteful behavior. By this time, the man had left. He was clearly humiliated. Although the food and service was good (for us) the episode left a "bad taste in our mouths" and we will not return to this establishment upon our next trip to Tucson. read more

We live on the far east side of Tucson and don't make it downtown very much, but when we do, we always eat at the Cup. Entrees are consistently good, and easy to find good vegetarian fare there. Desserts are fantastic. Drinks are also good. Atmosphere is very pleasant and interesting. read more

Ok, so I have probably spent the better portion of my adult social life at Congress. There's really no better place to hang out than on the patio on one of those OMG I love Tucson Fall nights. I recently started going to Geeks who Drink on Tuesday nights on the patio at Congress, so much fun ... You need to try it. Wait this review is for The Cup ... Yes of course it is! So, the Cup serves snacks from a $5 menu and their full menu on the patio and you know what? They're damn tasty! The $5 menu includes vegan Nachos and they're more sophisticated than your average plate of cheez whiz bar food. There are two types of tacos: fish and pork belly - they come two to an order and are really pretty awesome. I'm not a french fry kinda girl but if that's your thing, they are done very well here ... crispy, salty and hot from the fryer. My friend ordered the burger and it looked really good and he enjoyed it. The deserts look beautiful but are sometimes hit and miss. I have also eaten inside the cafe and it really is quite charming. It feels a lot like a cafe in Buenos Aires or Paris. They have a full bar, nice wine list and a pretty descent selection of beer. read more
