They were hot, crunchy, and delicious. I was worried they might have too much cheese inside, but the ratio was actually perfect. And of course, the pickles themselves were fabulous. I got the peach salad that came with curried pumpkin seeds and shredded asiago and croutons. I added grilled chicken for $4. I wished there were some fresh peaches on it but the salad was tossed in a peach dressing instead. The croutons also tasted like fried pieces of sandwich bread. I will say, I was so pleasantly surprised by how delicious this salad was! Holy cow, after a few days of camping, having vegetables was one thing, having this salad changed my outlook on life. My fiancé was a little saddened by the fact that we will be no where near this place (from Connecticut) becuase he thoroughly enjoyed his brisket wrap. Maybe it's the Mid Western charm and hospitality, but our experience was so great. After getting the bill, our waiter (who had two colored socks on and my friend thought he only had one, but alas, one sock was just black while the other was a hot pink) offered us our drinks to go and brought us back a full cup of iced tea and Dr Pepper. Prices, I thought, were reasonable. Service was friendly and the food was tasty. My only complaint would be the uncomfortable wooden chairs. If I were dining by myself, it wouldn't be a big deal as I would be in and out in around 20 minutes. This time I had a partner with me, so of course we lingered longer. That's exactly why we decided to come back for breakfast on the Fourth of July. We arrived around 11:05 a.m. and were seated just after a table of 12. Our waitress, who was incredibly sweet and kind throughout the entire experience, told us she was able to get our order into the kitchen before the large party. Shortly afterward, a table of seven and then a table of six were seated outside after us. A while later, the owner personally came to our table to apologize and explained that our ticket had been lost and our breakfast had never been made. We really appreciated her honesty and the fact that she came out herself to explain what happened. At that point, we weren't upset because we understand mistakes happen, especially in a busy, family-owned restaurant on the Fourth of July. While we continued waiting, our waitress refilled our coffee, and we asked if we could have a cinnamon roll while waiting for our breakfast. It wasn't meant to replace our meal--just something to hold us over since we'd already been waiting quite a while. The owner later returned and very graciously told us our breakfast would be complimentary because we had been waiting nearly two hours. We appreciated that gesture. Unfortunately, the wait continued. During that time, the table of seven and the table of six--both seated after us--received and finished their meals while we still had nothing. With about 15 minutes left before closing, we finally went inside and asked if they could simply make our breakfast to go. That's when everyone realized there had been another misunderstanding. Our waitress had thought that when we asked for the cinnamon roll, we had decided that was all we wanted, so our breakfast order had been canceled--even though it had never actually been made in the first place. I truly believe this was an honest miscommunication, not a lack of caring. Our waitress remained kind and attentive the entire time, and the owner did everything she could once she realized the original mistake. Unfortunately, a series of communication breakdowns resulted in us sitting in the restaurant for over two hours, watching at least 30 people who arrived after us receive their meals, before ultimately leaving hungry and having to find another place to eat. This was incredibly disappointing because we know how good this restaurant can be. We will likely give Rainy Days Café another chance because our previous visit was so positive, and I genuinely believe this was an unfortunate chain of mistakes rather than a reflection of the people who work there. I hope they can use this experience to improve communication between the front of the businesss and the kitchen because the food is worth coming back for, and the staff clearly cares about their customers.

The real reason is partly because I was introduced to a real Chicago dog while on a food trip in the Windy City. So now was my opportunity to try a Chicago dog from somewhere NOT Chicago. Also, I saw they served Italian beefs. Or is it beeves? And we all know I'm an 18th century street walker for some Italian beeves. Its location is pretty spot on for a place like this. Lakeside, is what it's called. The area. Not the restaurant. Pay attention. Inside is spacious and clean. Plenty of booths (boofs? Booves?) for hotdog consumption. It's an order at the counter type of place. Classic restaurant. I ordered a Chi Dog with a side of chili cheese fries. Did you see the photos of that dog? It tastes exactly like it looked. Like magic. Dog, tomato slice, pickle spear, sports peppers, relish, mustard. I grew WAY up since just ketchup. But I still haven't grown out of eating cold hotdogs. Nothing beats a midnight snack of a cold dog. Anyways. This thing is a beast. Not for the faint of heart or tiny of mouth. This is one of those dogs that once you start eating, you can't put it down because it's just so messy. In a beautiful way. True story coming up, my first bite launched my pickle spear out the tail end of my dog. I might lie about a lot of things, but never the evacuation of a pickle from a hotdog. If you like Chicago or hotdogs or food or things in general, get this dog. My side order of chili cheese fries looked like something out of an art gallery. They used crinkle cut fries, which are god tier fries. They also loaded it up with chili, which I feel everybody else usually lacks what the "proper" amount of chili is. But I will sadly have to dock a point or two for Chili Flavor. It seemed to lack a little bit of...something. It tasted better than plain ground beef, but something a little under chili. It wasn't bad at all. It's meat and cheese on fries. They were more Chili Adjacent Cheese Fries.
