The prices were low and the quality of the food was superb!! We ordered: 4 double cheeseburgers The perch dinner Jalapeño poppers (only 3 in a pack so if you want more, order 2) Fried pickles And The root beer shake The cheesecake shake Everything was delicious and came out hot & fresh!! While vacationing in Spring Lake we ran across this local popular eatery. We try to indulge in local favorites and support small businesses whenever we can. We ordered: Cod Dinner with fries and coleslaw Double Cheeseburger with fries Amazing prices and great value. Nice staff. There was a little wait but worth it because everything was hot and fresh. I was really excited to try this place when I saw the nostalgic look of the hamburger joint. Unfortunately it was a little disappointed when it came out as a frozen patty instead of a fresh. It kind of reminds me of the old hamburger places that used to put cooked patties in a drawer with beef juice to keep them moist. Devotees have been noshing for years on beefburgers, fries, and milkshakes as a quick meal en route to the beach, on the way home from work, or just to get a bite. During the pandemic it's drive-in only. Park in a numbered stall and order by phone. A masked and gloved employee delivers your order to your car and collects your money. Easy. The food is drive-in fare, nothing fancy, and it's not trying to be fancy. I got a deluxe cheeseburger, crinkle cut fries, and a chocolate shake. Inexpensive and tasted fine enough for me. We also tried the onion petals, and these also were good (they even come with onion petal sauce, into which I dipped my fries). It's not gourmet, but it's also not priced to be gourmet. Nothing fancy, which I think is the draw. Apparently this place has quite the following around these parts. Established in 1960 they've maintained their aesthetic to meet the needs of all who yearn for yester-year. Pretty cool, if you ask me! All food is take away. I live about a block away from Ray's and I pass it almost every day. The sign saying they have perch caught my eye so I decided to stop in last night and grab dinner. Very small space and I've seen a line out the door before. When I was there, I was the only one there aside from the three high school-aged employees working. Walk up to the counter and they'll write your order on the paper bag as you give it to them. My order was a perch sandwich, crinkle cut fries and a large vanilla shake. Shake came out right away. I tried drinking part of it while I was there, but it was fairly thick and the paper straw they gave me didn't work too well. I swapped it out once I got home and had better success. The fish sandwich was two fillets on a bun with tarter sauce. Like the other reviews have said.. if you like tarter sauce, order extra. For me, the amount was just fine. Fries lined the bottom of the paper bag and were still hot by the time I got home. This is a cute local little business exclusively serving takeout. It's one of those places that I'm sure is packed during the summer as people walk over to grab dinner or a shake. Heck, I'll probably be one of those people. read more

It may be an institution but the burgers are just baddddd. You can tell it's not freshly made. Basically eating sawdust smoosh together. I think the higher rating as to be because they are cheap. I would not even eat if free or they paid me... that bad. We stop because have never tried... should have kept moving along. Been going to Rays for over 25 years. It's always been a destination we go back to when visiting family in GH. Sadly, NO MORE. Fries were lukewarm warm and chewy. Chicken sandwich tasted like the chicken was cooked awhile ago...greasy and lukewarm. Food in general just was low quality and meh tasting. We're over Rays...what a loss of an icon. :( read more

One of the best in simple.. Easy menu, the shakes have the most options.. They are not fast food, It will take longer than the burger chains for a good reason.. A cute little diner in a town that is reminiscent of Lake Geneva, minus the Illinois license plates. During this COVID-19 business, you pull into a parking place (they're numbered) and call in your order. After a short wait, someone brings it to your car. I ordered a perch sandwich, that had two breaded, fried, perch fillets on a hamburger bun. I like Ray's. It's an old-school, roadside, burger joint, and that's cool. But, don't go there on a chilly or windy day unless you want to eat in you car, all they have is a picnic table outside. I ate at Ray's about 10 or 11 years ago. Today I went back and had the fish sammich. Ray's is obviously a Grand Haven landmark/institution, so I had to try it again. The fish was a little pricy, about $4 just for the sammich, fries and Coke extra. I got my food and sat outside (there is no inside) on the picnic table because it's too clumsy and messy to eat in my car. It was a cool and WINDY day. My sammich wrapper and napkins flew in the breeze... The fish sammich was good, tasty, crispy and seemed to have a decent quality to it. The fries were good, the Coke was Coke. Good food at Ray's, but I won't stop there again unless it's warm and calm outside. read more

Unfortunately the past several times I have enjoyed Rays the lady taking orders is incredibly unfriendly and rude. She never makes eye contact, does not greet you, and is generally unpleasant. She never says thank you and her behavior ruins the experience of Rays. Food was good as usual but the service at the counter has really gone downhill. I love Rays so much. I've been going there for years. Unfortunately the last few times I've visited was an utter blow to my love. The dingy older woman taking our order was horrid. Absolutely putrid attitude, she fills that glorious place with the stench of disdain. She was clearly disappointed in my existence and had better things to do then find out what I'd like to order. I grew up loving Rays and frequented the joint as a teen. I haven't been there for a long time as I moved out of the area. I was passing through today and was excited to get an olive burger and fries. Unfortunately, the place was not up to the standards I grew used to as a kiddo. I went with a friend and we ordered shakes, fries, chicken tenders, and an olive burger. One order of fries had clearly been sitting for a long time as they were cold and gross. The other order was hot, but was way too salty. Additionally, the olive burger was received as an olive cheeseburger. The chicken tenders and shakes were good. Perhaps, the fact that they looked closed and we were the only customers at 6:15PM should have been enough warning of what we were in for. I'm not sure what the problem was, as they seemed well staffed to just serve two people. I really want to love Rays, but from what we saw today, I probably won't try it again until next time I'm in town. read more

For dinner the second night, we went to Ray's Drive-In. It was a short walk from the Airbnb, where the smell coming up from the floor vents reminded me of Happy's basement. Ray's Drive-In was another anachronism, harking back to the glory days of Augie's on the East Hartford / Manchester line back in Connecticut. Girlfriend and I each ordered a delux hamburger, an order of fries, and a drink and the total for dinner was under $10. We sat outside and ate at a picnic table, and watched the locals come to Ray's. It's been open for almost fifty years. They put a healthy amount of mayo on those burgers. My only regret is not having a vanilla shake to balance out those well-seasoned fries... I hadn't been to Rays in sometime so I thought I would stop in. I am sad to say I am very disappointed they decided to switch to paper straws. They ruin the taste of the shakes and fall apart while waiting for my food. I threw 3 of these "straws" because they couldn't hold up to the shake. This doesn't seem cost effective and a good alternative to plastic. I don't think I'll be returning to this establishment because they have ruined the classic experience I grew up on and remember. Ray's is exactly what a good burger shack should be! It's adorable, near unchanged, quick friendly service and the grub is great! This is the thin patty style fast food burger that defines Americana in its prime years. It's what you want Mickey D's to be. In fact, the comparison is impossible to ignore. A think beef patty is slathered in ketchup and mayo with diced onions and a couple pickles slices. The difference, the ingredients are actually good (and actually food) and they're wrapped up delightfully in a waxy steamy bun and folded in wax paper. Oh yeah. Add some krinkle kit fries and one of Ray's unique shake flavors (salted caramel, peanut butter, while chocolate, raspberry, root beer, etc) grab your bag and you're good to go! For the price ($2 bucks a burger) you can't beat it. I'd also recommend the perch sandwich, it's a surprisingly big portion, two crispy fried pieces of flaky perch served simply on a bun with tartar sauce. However, I'd definitely ask for extra tartar, it's a little skimpy. Rays is right on and I'm glad they've been doing their thing since 1960! read more

We've stopped here the last two times we've visited Grand Haven. Last year, I said I wouldn't go back because the lady behind the counter (Kelly?) was extremely rude and has absolutely no tact. How can you be so miserable at your job and act so annoyed at customers?! She's the first person you see, and let me tell you, she will make your entire experience miserable. It's almost like you're bothering her and she seems annoyed. She has a snarky attitude, and they also screwed up our order. I think the food is terrible, the teenagers making the food should pay more attention to what they're doing. It's a crowded, hot, and miserable environment. Save yourself time and money and go somewhere where the employee taking your order doesn't act like a robot. I can't figure out why if you're that miserable, you wouldn't find a desk job where you don't have interactions with any people. That seems more like it. Perhaps time to reconsider your place of employment. It would make the Restaurant and experience a much more pleasant one for the customers. Not impressed at all. read more

I would like to give my business to a local family run establishment BUT the woman taking our order was rude and crabby. The owner should understand that they are losing patrons because some people don't like to be treated like dirt. I hope they read this and other reviews so they understand they need to improve their customer service. We did not eat there last night because of this issue. I do like the food. The perch dinner is good and so are the chicken strips. Burgers and fries are also very good. Wise up and treat your customers respectfully. They are the reason you are in business. In all of my travels to Grand Haven I've never once stopped to check out the "world famous Ray's Drive-In", so I finally took it upon myself to find out what this little burger joint was all about. Ray's is definitely a "hole-in-the-wall" establishment, so for some that may be a turn off, but for this guy it's a huge plus, as I've always found the "hole-in-the wall" and "mom 'n pop" joints are where it's at...Ray's definitely delivers. The burgers which are kind of akin to the "slider" were tasty and cheap, I mean a triple cheeseburger for $2.50 is practically unheard of, and fries for a $1.35!? You literally could eat there with the change in your pocket. But don't let the small price tag fool you, the food delivers a nice punch of flavor. The burger was pretty damn good and the fries were some of the most perfect crinkle cut fries out there, I probably could have ate a pound of them on my own. My only complaint of Ray's is that the parking lot is pretty small, and there's no where to sit with the exception of two picnic tables by the side of the building, which you can sit at when you fight with the other patrons for a spot. My recommendation is that you get some Ray's to-go and find somewhere nice to enjoy your food 'cus odds are you won't be doing it at Ray's. Aside from the parking and seating situation, I'll most likely hit Ray's again in the future; however, I'll definitely be taking my next order "to go". read more
