We were greeted by the owner and his daughter and talk about some sweet people! The owner told my husband and me that it's a family-owned business and that they also live in the neighborhood. We told him we had just moved into the neighborhood and wanted to check them out. Right away, it felt like we were being welcomed into the community. He let us sample a few of the pot pie flavors, and every single one was so good! We ended up ordering the combo meal for $24.99, which comes with your choice of a 5" pot pie or bowl of chili, a side salad, AND a 5" pie. You really can't beat that! We got the curry chicken pot pie and pecan sweet potato pie. The sweet and savory combination was chef's kiss! Every. Single. Bite. The pot pie had this flaky, buttery crust with a chicken filling that was packed with flavor. And let me tell you about this side salad because it deserves its own moment! It's a zucchini salad made with zucchini, yellow squash, Honeycrisp apple, red onions, bell peppers, and a house-made vinaigrette. So fresh and SO good! Now, because we were being greedy AND wanted to support, we also got the banana pudding and a slice of pound cake. Man listen...the desserts will make you wanna slap yo momma!!! What I really appreciated is that the desserts weren't overly sweet. Just right! I could seriously go on and on about how good the food and service were. The ambiance is really cool and laid-back, with a few tables available for dining inside. There's street parking. We lucked up and found a spot right in front, but it was a Wednesday. I can imagine parking being a little more difficult on the weekends since there are several restaurants along Slauson on both sides of the street. So happy we stumbled upon this neighborhood gem. Why haven't I stopped by Crustees sooner?! I tried their peach cobbler once at a farmer's market years ago and added it to my list. I thought it was a dessert place, but they have lots of savory items that look good, too. I got a Northridge Nutter Butter, which is classic banana pudding with nutter butter cookies and a peanut butter drizzle. Peanut butter and banana is such a good combo, I'm surprised I've never seen this type of banana pudding before. It is SO good. I saw another review that said it's only 4 bites and zero bananas in sight. I believe it's 16oz, so it's a larger portion. Two could share even so the 4 bites thing was comical. As for the bananas, it was light on bananas but I prefer it that way so it comes down to your personal preference. The pudding was light, maybe mixed with whipped cream. I really enjoyed it. If you go on a weekday from 4-6p, you can't park on the street in front of the entrance. I went to grab some apple pies and ended up trying their chili and chili pot pie. Both tasted amazing!! I visited Crustees on a Tuesday evening, and it was fairly busy with takeout and DoorDash orders. Initially, I was told that the seafood gumbo pot pie wasn't available, but I appreciated that they were able to make one for me in about 15 minutes. The pot pie itself was good, though I was expecting more seafood. The gumbo seemed to contain mostly chicken and sausage, and I didn't notice much seafood. Because of that, I think I'll give the veggie pot pie a try on my next visit. For dessert, I had the peach cobbler with ice cream, and that was definitely a highlight of the meal, warm, flavorful, and a great way to end the evening. The chicken pot pie was perfect, the crust made it a full circle moment and it is a perfect serving for just one. I inhaled it before I could get a decent photo of its presentation, vegetables were cooked to perfection and the actual inside of the pie was so warm and seemed like it was hugging my stomach from the inside. I also enjoyed their corn bread which was a little dry but it was still plenty flavorful. I did go back recently for a birthday desert for myself, I'm not a cake person but I LOVE pumpkin pie and I was so excited to go back for a mini one as my birthday desert! It was delicious! Cherry on top for sure. The two times I've visited the staff has been very welcoming and also helped me set up a rewards account that I absolutely will be adding points to. There's a nice sit down section outside but I prefer dining inside if anything, seemed very clean and organized but not too much decor which is fine because the food makes up for it. The turkey chili is delicious and I know turkey chili cause I've been making it by request for my family and for special occasions for a couple of decades. I went down there and didn't get one I got a Curry Chicken Pot Pie and Key Lime pie. As a self proclaimed Key lime connoisseur it was great. The pies have very fresh ingredients seasoned perfectly also the crust is amazing I see how they get the name Crustees. The menu was very hi-brow and when she told me we were having tiramisu, I offered to bring this Crustee's cobbler. Well I did not know that one of the other guests had made the tiramisu and that she was very proud of her dish. Honestly I did not mean to steal her glory. But trust me, when the cobbler was presented, that little Italian cake just didn't have a chance. People licked their spoons and found ways to sneak into the kitchen with plastic cups to take some home. I saw an ad on FB, and we came today - and they are celebrating their 5 year anniversary today!!! We got a chicken pot pie and a beef pot pie! The chicken pot pie, the classic, was so fulfilling I felt loved! But the beef pot pie!! It had a tantalizing flavor I could not place, and I couldnt stop eating it! We then got the banana pudding and the nutter butter peanut butter pudding!! Light, rich, silky and satisfying! We couldn't stop!! Then we got several desserts to take home: peach cobbler, apple crisp cobbler and the pecan pumpkin pie! God help us!! $85 dollars later, with pies to take home - and we already are planning on coming back! I rated it 4 stars primarily because of the Curry Chicken Pot Pie which was my favorite! Rich, flavorful, and incredibly comforting. The gumbo had a great texture and portion size, but it was slightly lacking in flavor. The same goes for the sweet potato pie, it could use a bit more depth. I was able to find parking on the street in front of the eatery. I left my dog child in the car with it running and my air on full blast because it was a sweltering day. I wasn't sure what to get. I was persuaded by the owner to try some items so I got the Curry chicken pot pie, the Mixed berry cookie crumble pie, the peach cobbler, the banana pudding and a cup of chili. My total was 50. Service was quick and I left to go home and devour my food. THEY WERE AMAZING. Chili was thick and heart my curry chicken was moist and full and amaze balls. Both if my dishes were ready to eat and fresh! They filled me up rather quickly. I have not tried my peach cobbler or my banana as I ran out of tummy space!!!! And the Apple Pie I tried is fantastic, but their real claim to fame is their sugar-bomb Banana Pudding and the Seafood Gumbo which is truly exceptional. The shrimp and crab infuse the seafood savor, and chicken and sausage make a meaty mix. I'm not going to lie, nine dollars is pretty steep for a 5-inch pie, but the quality is excellent. If I'm going to spend my money somewhere, I'd happily spend it to support this family business. read more
