This is going to be a different kind of review, BE-cause... I didn't actually eat here. Oh, I tried. I should have read more of the reviews that commented on the wait. I saw all the stars and that was enough for me. And, on that particular day, I wanted to eat vegetarian and apparently Crow's Nest does a lovely job with plant-based food. When I arrived at the restaurant, the eight chairs at the top of the stairs were occupied, and there was only one couple standing on the stairs themselves. After waiting 30 minutes following being told by the polite hostess that the wait was 15, I threw in the proverbial (dish)towel and headed down the long single flight of stairs for the exit. I was willing to stick it out, but lost heart when I learned that there was a whole coffee shop full of others who were also waiting. By the time I decided to cut my time losses and leave, the line was the the way down the stairs to the coffee shop (referenced above), where it's apparently legit to wait for your table while having a cup 'o' joe. I wasn't told this by the hostess, but deduced it after seeing her scurry down the stairs to fetch people who never responded when their party was called. This happened five times while I was there. I'd bet the over that she climbs 10,000 stairs a day, at the rate I saw. The atmosphere is hip and casual, and the patrons all looked to be enjoying themselves. During my half-hour wait, I was able to see them being served some delicious-looking food, and having nice, long chats without being rushed. Two ladies continued their conversation at a four-top after finishing and paying, and next to them, a young mother seated at a six-top, checked her smartphone while her two youngsters played with their food. So the whole vibe is SUPER-relaxing. On my way back down the stairs, I passed a group of young dudes who evidently had just come from the dreadlock parlor and, based on the smell of the atmosphere surrounding them, had enjoyed some tasty buds on their way. As I was passing--I promise I'm not making this up--one of them told his buddies that he really needed food *right then* and couldn't wait. Once gone, I used the Yelp app to locate another highly-rated local joint, which I tried and loved. I'll go back there next time I'm in town. I'll also make another try for a meal at Crow's Nest because the food looked dynamite. Two of their vegan dishes in particular caught my eye. I'm giving four stars because the hostess was really pleasant, the wait staff were working at a feverish pace, and the food looked so good. They can't help it that people line up and wait for their yummy chow, or that some of their patrons are oblivious to others around them. Punch line (I kid you not): The dudes with the munchies (mentioned above) showed up after me at the place I ultimately went for lunch. The food was the highlight. They had good options on the menu, and the portion sizes were large. We had a party of 5 on a Sunday morning, and we waited 40 minutes for our table, which was reasonable. They had a café where we could wait, which was separate from the dining area, so that the dining experience was still private and quiet. There is a parking lot, but there aren't many spaces. He was a little snob about long wait times but, in the end he was impressed with the food. All the food was great and tasted fresh and right amount of seasonings. The staff was very friendly and courtious. They were of great help with their recommendations. I would have given this place 5 stars but, there were few moments I felt they don't. 1. Visited the Crow's Nest this past weekend for the first time and ordered the Master at Arms gotta say that the dish was fantastic!!! Don't tell my mom but the buttermilk gravy was the best this southern girl has ever had it was served on top of very flavorful fried potatoes and fluffy scrambled eggs. I love the Crow's Nest. The food is great and the service is top notch. My husband is a vegetarian so it's great that they have options for him. Most restaurants have one or two options so the menu pretty much decides what he can eat. Whereas, Crows Nest offers many options that are vegetarian/vegan/or can be made vegetarian. The only thing would be the the restaurant is too small and there is often a wait. On the plus side you can wait in the cafe downstairs. read more

I have always wanted to eat at the Crow's Nest, but I heard the wait was long. I'm sorry but no food is worth waiting more than 30 minutes for. Life is too short to wait in line in my humble opinion. However, I had the day off and met my longtime high school friend there for lunch. I arrived around 11:45am and lucky for me there was only a 10-15 minute wait. By the time my friend arrived, they were calling my name to be seated. So far so good. Everything on the menu looked delicious. I kept waffling between breakfast or lunch. I finally decided on the Benny Special, which was written on the board above the staircase, especially since they prepare their eggs medium. It was loaded with broccoli, bacon, chicken, and other tasty items. Oh man, I was not disappointed. It was delicious and I had at least half to take home to enjoy the following day. My friend had the Espresso French Toast and she even shared a bite with me. It was very good. I'm happy to report that I am a fan of the Crow's Nest. It is a great restaurant that has a huge following, yet it felt like a small town diner. We never felt rushed even though the place was lined up with people waiting. Not only has the food declined since I was last here and the prices are a bit high when it comes to what you get and how much, but I ordered an item clearly marked under "vegan" -- meaning patrons are going to trust it's vegan, perhaps with allergies or personal/spiritual beliefs or any number of things (plus people who haven't had meat and/or dairy for a long time and eat it can get sick) -- and my fries were strewn with several bacon strips. The fries also mostly had black rot spots and weren't even edible. Made my stomach turn. Didn't want to give them a hard time, just left a little ill feeling like I wasted my money. A group of friends and I stopped in from out of town on strong recommendation. There were seven of us, and it was that odd in-between lunch and dinner hour, but the host made it seem like they'd by unable to accommodate a group of our size despite a regular flow of in and out traffic. We waited for about an hour outside, but the staff were good at communicating with us about our wait time. Once we were seated, we were served with drinks pretty quickly but then left alone for an awkward amount of time. When our waitress finally came to take our orders, she mentioned the kitchen was backed up, so apparently they'd been trying to buy a little time. Happily, our food came out quickly despite the anticipated delay. I ordered The Nest Scramble with a side of sourdough toast and jam. Delicious! Hot scrambled eggs with flavorful summer veggies and tangy feta. The toast was perfectly crisp and nicely buttered, and the seasoned potatoes that came standard were well peppered and the perfect addition to the plate. Everyone else at my table was likewise pleased and it was good to see such uniformly awesome taste across dishes ranging from breakfast scrambles to lemon poppyseed French toast (also pictured) to cheeseburgers. Today was a good weather. I went to crow's nest for late lunch. There are beautiful seats beside the windows.. I requested to be seated at one of them.. I took time going through all varieties on the menu.. I finally chose artisan Grilled burger with sweet potato fries and strawberry lemonade. After 10 minutes later my order landed on my table. I started with the chicken burger.. I was surprised with how delicious the feta cheese and diced green olive mixture in the bottom of the bun.. The chicken breast itself was good but in my opinion it would tastes better with more seasoning and butter flavor. The other hald bun covered with delicious cream cheese and Spanish. You can literally divide the burger and eat each layer separately and still tastes good. Nice! I probably rate it 4/5 good job. Yah i know!! You still want to hear about the sweet potato fries! It was awesome!! The ideas of going back and ordering ONLY sweet potatoes fries, kept running inside my mind till this moment!! YES perfect cut and tasty.. Would be better if accompanied with Miss. Had a nice lunch w/ a long time friend and spent my whole visit at Crow's Nest to catch up. In the end this place didn't overwhelm me as much as I though it would, although it was still a pretty solid experience. A lunch in Kzoo while during my road trip to the West Side of The Hand, I Yelped the Kzoo area for high quality reviews and Crow's Nest was on the list. Some of the highlights sounded appealing so I convinced my friend Mel to meet there for lunch. You walk upstairs (it's above a coffee shop) and it's like a wide open attic (for seating) with a kitchen in the back. We took a seat next to an outlet because there was wi-fi in the general area (sweet!). Based on reviews I got the creamy tomato soup - - which was okay, but nothing spectacular, and luke warm. I also got the Scooner Scramble (prosciutto, sauteed onions, tomatoes and red peppers topped with crumbled goat cheese and fresh spinach) which looked good, but they went really light on the proscuitto which was disappointing because that's the good stuff. It was tasty, and not greasy, which is what I was looking for. I liked how flexible the options were w/ the plates - - he gave me banana bread as a side instead of toast which was good, but nothing beats my mom's banana bread. Sorry, it is what it is, I was looking for someone to beat mom's and it wasn't close. Service was good but then faltered after we paid the bill. We were there for about 2hrs chatting, and customer service should not end after paying the bill, it should continue on until you've left the establishment. We had to flag him down for refills on water and coffee. The walk to the bathroom was an exciting one - - the floors were slippery like they were layered in grease, reminded me of my HS days working at Wendy's (I was the Top Employee, ya know) and you could have easily fell flat on your face. A bit hazardous if you ask me, and no visual signs indicating the floor was slippery. Overall it was an okay experience, but I was definitely expecting better. It would have been a solid 4-stars but the drop in service and oily floors mitigates the experience. For me, if I'm passing through Kzoo again in the future on a limited schedule, I'd probably check out other places on that Yelp list. However, if I was a regular Bronco residing in the area I would go back to Crow's Nest and see if we could have a more improved, exciting, delectable, eye-opening, and nostalgic experience. I have a hard time saying no to a big stack of pancakes, eggs benedict slathered in creamy hollandaise, and some crispy hashbrowns. But, as I attempt to make better choices these days those things went sadly ignored by me at Crow's Nest. And it was hard! (I mean, banana bread french toast? COME ON!) I was good though, and opted for the yogurt plate with granola, raspberry coulis, Greek yogurt, a fruit cup and my choice of bread. What. A. Meal! Now, if I'm being honest this probably didn't shake out to be all that healthy since I opted for the banana bread (I'm so weak) as my carb-y side and the yogurt was so rich and thick that it had to have been full fat but I FELT healthy as I wolfed down this amazing bowl of crunchy house made granola topped with the tart coulis and my wedges of pineapple and orange. I ended up plenty full and plenty satisfied. A very impressive dish indeed. The space is pretty neat. Kind of boho and situated on the top floor of Fourth Coast Cafe/Bakery (where you can buy loaves of the awesome banana bread or sea salt foccacia, or challah, or any number of awesome yeasty type things). The space is smallish and it was totally hopping around noon on a Thursday afternoon so I'm willing to guess the weekends are pretty wild so I'd come ready for a wait. It's totally worth it though. Hands down my favorite place in Kalamazoo. Definitely grab a Latte downstairs before you ask for a spot (or while you're waiting for a table when it's busy) because they only have drip upstairs. I've never waited long and there's plenty of art decorating the walls by local artists that kept me distracted. I've never had anything here that disappointed. By far my favorite brunch place & one of the best in Kzoo. I think I've submitted the most photos here on yelp. The food is delectable, service is great, and the atmosphere is lively. The portions are large and could feed two mouths for a filling snack between two meals. The prices are fair for the quality and quantity of the dishes. There's a great selection of vegan and vegetarian options too! The most popular options are the homemade French toast and David's freight sandwich. My personal fav is the Sleeping bear omelette with potatoes (!! also amazing) paired with their banana bread. Soo much delicious food packed into one order.
