Popped in for lunch recently while in town. This little BBQ shack is busy. Walk up counter service, place your order, pay and give them your name, they will call you in a few minutes when your foods ready. We arrived right before noon, and by the time we had paid there was a line behind us to the doorway. A small interior seating area to eat, a lot of folks take it to go. I ordered the Combo plate, smoked turkey and chopped pork with collards and baked beans as my two sides. A generous serving of both meats, with good greens and beans, along with some pickles and a couple slices of wrapped white bread. The Q had nice flavor and was cooked well, the turkey was moist and smoky good. The chopped was good too, got more of it than the turkey. I am from Calif but we also have a home in Athens, Ga. I am always looking for BBQ places to try out. Tried most of them in the Athens area and did not find anything worth going back for. We went to Madison today for a day trip and I looked for BBQ places. Saw the reviews for Crowe's BBQ and decided to try. Glad we did. I got the brisket plate. My #1 brisket I have ever had was Kreuz BBQ in Lockhart, TX. The next on my list is JW Hayes n Newport Beach, CA.- very similar to Kreuz and told me he fashioned his after Kreuz. Now I have a #3- which ranks right up there with Kreuz and the JW Hayes. The brisket was so tender and fell apart when you pick it up. Just the right amount of smoke flavor. So good. My wife ordered the pulled chicken sandwich and said it was the best she ever had. And she is VERY picky, so I was surprised. I tried hers and it was very tender as well. Now I am tempted to go back to try out their bbq ribs. Now I have my list of top 3. On to find the next one for my list. read more

Have you ever walked into an environment and thought "wow, these people hate the canadians". Well I walked in here and man was it rough. I personally have watched every single season of gossip girl, and nothing could compare to the drama in this place. Service was awful, some guy gave me the stank eye, and my food was bad. The food for our 15 member family was right on the money. The ribs were meaty, tender and delicious. My son in law said they were the best he has ever eaten. My grand kids loved the mac and cheese. I loved the baked beans and potato salad (although I did add more relish and onions(personal preference)) to the P.S. I have to say the collards could have been chopped up more, cooked longer and seasoned a little more. Again, a personal preference because the collards were gone by the time we got the birthday cake served. Amanda who handled our take out was wonderful, even added some extra ribs to make it just right. A great experience. The staff is amazing, very friendly and helpful. Now let's get the food. The wife and I purchase a pound of brisket and two sides mac n cheese, and potato salad. The brisket was so darn tender it just melted in your mouth, Mac n cheese was delicious creamy, the potato salad was good but it needed a little more sweet relish it was still good I must say. The BBQ is amazingly good! Cole slaw and Brunswick stew are also! The service was very friendly and fast. We enjoyed the casual setting on the screen porch. This is like eating with friends. Finding the bathroom is an adventure so get clear directions. These folks are so nice and great food! read more

Good food. We tried the pork, the chicken and the ribs. Pork and ribs were excellent. The chicken was a bit dry but still not bad. The house bbq was excellent and the sweet bbq sauce good also. Walk up service and an enclosed patio for eat in. We'll go back. Next time we hope to try the turkey. read more

What BBQ should be. It's a phenomenon old fashioned BBQ restaurant. The smell, taste... everything is excellent. The chopped pork is second to none, the vinegar based sauce is perfect. I hired Crowe's BBQ for a private event over Memorial Day, and it was the BEST DECISION of the bash. The food is outstanding. I ordered the Ribs, Chicken and pulled pork, with the Brunswick stew, Mac/Cheese and Slaw as the sides. Everyone bragged on the quality, and I was really impressed with the portions. Ordered for 50, easily could have fed 70! Amanda was PLEASURE to deal with. Great communicator, helpful with suggestions, she showed up for a 'site survey", and on day of party,went above and beyond. I have to watch my portions due to weight and health issues, and they refused to let me order off the kids menu for God knows what reason. Who cares who eats it? They're still getting the same money for the same amount of food. So I sat and watched my girlfriend eat. It sucks cause we like this place, but this will be the last time we come here. Going down that long lonesome highway. Bound for a mountain of "Q" and Stew. Sure, ain't nothing here going to tie me. And I got some memories I'd like to taste again. Unfortunately, Crowe's Open Air BBQ isn't one of them. Experience has taught me that pre-sauced Pork Sandwiches aren't generally a good sign. Plus, I suspect the Baked Beans weren't. And while the Potato Salad was fair, the Brunswick Stew was a little on the watery side. read more

Nice little hometown barbecue--with big flavor!! We recommend the Texas toast pork sandwich with pimento cheese topping --Avery unique flavor! And the Brunswick stew, and collards are extra special--we even got a tour of the smoking pits from Mason--Avery friendly. (And capable proprietor. We travel through the area each year on our way to NC for family vacation. Order at the window and pick up your food inside. Very friendly reception. The aroma had already hinted at the deliciousness that awaited. We had the ribs and pulled pork plates. Food came out quick. Ribs were delicious with well defined smoke ring and fall off the bone tenderness. Pork was excellent as well with good amount of barky bits on the plate, which I appreciate. The Sheriffs Deputy in line behind me recommended the strawberry cake and it was fantastic. But, crowning dish had be the smoked pimento cheese sandwich....do not miss it!! Hole in the wall look, hall of fame taste. Went here based on yelp reviews and was not disappointed. The ribs were fall of the bone with good skin and the pork was tender. The sauce was just enough to let you taste the meat while giving it a nice balance. Slaw and stew were good as well - and the people seem to be golden. Definitely give it a try. read more

I was driving the backroads from FL to NC with family and friends and stopped for some peaches. I asked the local vendor where to find a great bbq place and this is where he sent me...what an excellent discovery!!! Although I couldn't understand exactly what he was saying with his thick southern accent, this man gave top notch typical country directions. It was so easy to find. Unfortunately, when we got there, it was closed. To our surprise, we met the owner as he was walking around outside taking a business call and he invited us in for a quick pulled pork sandwhich, slaw and potato salad. Wow...AMAZING! Southern hospitality at its finest mixed with excellent bbq. What a true gem! I want to spread the word about this place because good food and good people are a rare combination. read more

Just another meh or worse bbq that has no competition, hence great local reviews. Ribs were ROOM TEMPERATURE, par boiled or steam tabled before or after a very short affair with smoke. Way over salted, no smoke ring, lacking flavor. Not cooked enough to render the fat- extremely fatty. Sauce was weak, lacking flavor too. Slaw was made in a blender- odd taste. Hoping for Texas toast, got cold white bread. Brunswick was a blender chicken base with white shoepeg added. Let's call it a nasty meat shake. Could drink the Brunswick with a large straw. Pickles were falling apart cheap dyed green misfits. Mac n cheese was meh, and sadly the shining star. Strawberry cake was miniature, and days old out of a refrigerator. Again, nasty. Hard pass. We recently hired Crowe's for a wedding. I worked closely with Amanda and can say she was very professional, friendly and most important helpful. Leading up to the wedding we communicated via phone, email and text, she responded back to my messages almost instantly regardless of the time. Excellent customer service. The food was well received and the responses I got back from other guests were very positive. We did not want the "traditional" wedding food that comes out tasteless and dry. Along with the buffet staff we also hired two bartenders from Crowes and was very pleased with their service as well. Overall I would like to say Amanda and her crew went above and beyond, I would not hesitate to use their services for future events. Thank you for making my mother of the bride job so much easier and not having to worry about the cocktail hour or the food and drinks for the reception. read more

I was headed to my favorite bbq joint when I saw this little business out of the corner of my eye. I pulled over and went into Crowe's. It looks to be a very simple and family operated business. They serve ribs, chicken and pork. As is my usual custom for a first time visit, I tried the pork plate which consists of pulled pork, plus 2 sides. I got Brunswick Stew and cole slaw. The stew was very familiar, much like the stew you find in many places in this part of Georgia, though this one seemed to have a little extra kick to it. It was tasty if maybe just a tad too watery. Next time I'll order a bigger serving. The cole slaw seemed no better than what you'd find at a fast food joint like KFC. The serving of pulled pork was substantial, almost too much for me. It was lightly spiced with some sauce and I didn't feel a need to drown it in more sauce. The pork was a little tougher than I prefer. I really like my pulled pork to be tender. Almost melt-in-your-mouth tender. This was not even close, but it did have a nice taste and I found room to eat it all. Crowe's is another one of those bbq joints that is all about the Georgia Bulldogs (anyone ever seen a similar joint for Tech?). In one corner was a ceramic bulldog, while another corner featured a huge, life-size (maybe even real?) stuffed head of a pig. The walls had pictures of UGA events. I never let the Bulldog stuff get in the way of enjoying a meal. Crowes is good. Not great and not as good as my original destination (a review about it will come later), but if you find yourself in these parts give 'em a try. read more

These are the ONLY ribs my wife will eat from a restaurant. That says pretty much everything. But the slaw is amazing. The sauce for the BBQ is excellent. And these are about the nicest folks you'll ever meet. It's definitely worth the trip. read more

This place is great! I work down the street and pick up lunch here about once a week. We usually get the pulled pork, slaw, and stew. Sometimes the chicken. The taste is consistent and smooth. Not overly smoky or loaded with liquid smoke. The sauce is thin and vinegary which is how I like it. The slaw is like KFC's which is just plain good. If you've had KFC's, you know what I mean. We'll continue to enjoy Crowe's regularly. read more

Small family owned business in Madison. About $10 for 4 ribs, 2 sides and 2 slices of toasts and some pickles. Not a bad deal at all. The ribs were pretty tasty except for the fact that they were extremely salty. I saved the leftover and tried to wash them off with some water but still very salty (even though the flavor was good). Didn't get to try other BBQ. It was my first time seeing a place with BBQ turkey so that was interesting but unfortunately they do not have any beef selection. read more
