Customer service is amazing there in Greensboro Georgia. I like Holcombs Barbecue and their sandwiches are amazing. The cakes are homemade. Very nice people that own Greensboro and White Plains. We went because one of our party drove past it every day and it was always busy so.. It's an old gas station that has been converted. The "office " is the kitchen and the service bays are the dining room. It has no atmosphere at all. Concrete floors and formica tables. You have your choice of a BBQ plate. A BBQ sandwich or ribs. Served with coleslaw and/or brunswick stew. We tried all 3. The place was doing a great to go business but I'm not sure why. It just wasn't very good. The bbq is beef. Sometimes, reading how bad Yelp reviews are about a place makes me want to review them more. First, you should know that I KNOW Southern BBQ. That is really all you need to know. Yep, I am sure of myself that way. Normally, I wouldn't review a BBQ place without trying out some sides, but I always base my overall reviews on pulled pork and hash. I got both of those here, they call it stew, that is a normal thing. To me, stew and hash are very similar and, since everyone has their own recipe for it, it doesn't matter what it is called. I drove by here on a Thursday, noted that it was open and went around the block to go back and get some. For the person who complained that they aren't open enough, I would simply say that I have never been to a Southern BBQ restaurant that was remotely good unless it was open only three or four days a week. People who complain about such things know nothing about Southern BBQ. Six or seven days a week BBQ virtually always sucks (with the one exception being Maurice's based out of Columbia, SC. And, with Maurice's, it is because all their meat is cooked over 100% wood 100% of the time in an incredible industrial BBQ setting (I have been in their "factory))" and they ship the food from there to their restaurants. There is nothing like it anywhere else. So, you see a BBQ place only open three days a week and you already know they probably have good food. This ain't Applebees's with their seven day a week shitty food. Applebees's being open fewer days would not make their food good, however. In any case, I went there and got some pulled pork and stew to take home. Pulled pork is what I judge BBQ restaurants by, with hash or stew a close second. I could care less if they cook chicken or brisket (Unless they are in Texas, then it is a different thing entirely). I have had BBQ chicken sandwiches at a great BBQ restaurant in SC, but I am never trying fried chicken at such a place. That is just me. In the South, I also could care less about brisket. Note quickly, Texas is not in the South. in Texas, BBQ is about brisket. To make it brief, the pulled pork and stew was outstanding. The pulled pork didn't need extra sauce added (which is always the key to good pulled pork) and the stew was simply some of the best I ever had. Part of that, I think, was it was heavy on the corn, to the point they had to have cooked it with corn cobs to extract the flavor more. The pulled pork was outstanding. What more can I really say? I went to the location in the "city" of Greensboro, a very small town. This was in an old gas station and the food was brought in from their rural restaurant where it is cooked. It was a pick up and go type of setting. That close to Atlanta and I suspect that Covid hysteria may may have gotten to them. The woman at the counter was nice and we had a chat (no masks). There was no rudeness or anything like that, I ordered, we chatted, I paid, and I got my food. My dog was in my running car (it was hot) and I was happy with the turnaround time. I have no clue why these folks have a 3-star rating. With places like this, I simply have to assume reviewers giving them these ratings are idiots. And, I looked at the "hidden" reviews and all looked totally legit and were all good. Makes me wonder about Yelp, maybe Holcomb's didn't pay their pay-to-play game. If you like actual BBQ, you won't be disappointed in this one. read more

Open 3 nights a week. When they run out they close. Very very informal. Walking in you see everything.....the mismatched tables and chairs. The menu is on the wall with the white letters that as a child I loved playing with!!! Pork is the only meat served. Well flavored and juicy, chopped or sliced. Sandwich for 3.95... soft bun and around 1/4 pound of chopped meat. 2 slices pickles... Combo plate has same chopped pork as sandwich, Cold slaw, that is not too runny, crunchy and not loaded with mayo!!! A slight vinegar and black pepper flavored. It comes with "stew". A liquid purée of something..... not visually appealing. It has some meat, tomatoes onions in it. Definitely not something that I will order again. The staff at the register were friendly and definitely quick at putting our to go order together. Will return but only for the slaw and sandwich! read more

Typically closed. Limited house. When I went there in June 2022, they were leaving and the confusing sign not readable from the road read to walk to the outside window to place your seat rider. There was no inside seating. The front doors were locked. There were a few pick-nick tables outside. In the past the BBQ was good. But finding it open is the problem. Hardly anywhere to really eat in Greensboro. The entire town seems to drying up, although decorating looks great downtown. Used to love going to this place but sadly the owners have let it decline terribly. They are supposed to be a BBQ place but yet they don't serve ribs, don't serve baked Beans and don't even serve chicken. They literally have 3 menu items. My last trip there was in June and the owner was incredibly rude to me. Told me that her bathroom was for customers only. When I said "well I was going to be a customer but I'd like to wash my hands!" She gave me the key, or rather she THREW the key my way. I do not know how they stay in business. My Mother corrected me this week about Holcomb's. I always believed it was the barbeque I grew up enjoying, but she reminded me we patronized Stewart's which has long since closed. The reason for my confusion from my childhood memories is obvious: both Stewarts and Holcomb's had locations that served their wonderful barbeque in rural areas with sawdust as the carpeting for your feet. This review of Holcomb's is for their urban location (urban being used somewhat jokingly), but if you can make it to their rural spot in nearby White Plains, make the effort. You'll find it very memorable, sitting in their long cinder-block shed, sawdust under your feet, cows in the fields nearby. Be sure to bring your Yankee visitors to the rural location. They'll thank you for it. Regardless of where you consume Holcomb's, you're in for a treat. I consider their Brunswick Stew to be the measure by which I judge other stews. I may someday find better, but in my 50 years I have yet to beat their stew. I once thought the same of their pulled pork until I discovered a couple other joints in middle Georgia. The Greensboro location is in an old service station. The folks behind the counter are family and they've been keeping up the Holcomb tradition for decades. I once asked the owner if they'd ever consider opening an Atlanta place and she just looked at me, all bewildered, like I had suggested possibly opening a store on Mars. The stew is fantastic. Perfectly spiced. You'll see shredded meat and some vegetables floating around in the stew. Some think it is too watery and it definitely isn't thick, but I happen to believe they've got the perfect thickness in their stew as it is. Get a plate and you get some stew plus a serving of their pulled pork. Again, I find it perfectly spiced and rarely do I add more sauce. It can sometimes be less tender, but it is always fresh and a joy to eat. Be sure to help yourself to the sweet pickles in the little plastic containers on every table. read more

Been coming to Holcomb's since the early 80s. The negative reviews on here are from uninformed Yankees who don't know bbq. This is the real deal. They cook all week and when they are out, that's it. They offer two meats, sliced pork or chopped pork. They have one vinegar based sauce that is to die for and the best Brunswick stew on the planet. If you want fancy bbq out of a freezer with 10 flavors of sauce packaged in a factory then don't come here. If you want real southern bbq then this is a bucket list place. read more

This is the regular old time Bar- B- Que joint we are so fond of in the South. This restaurant as stated in the other revue is located in an old service station. The decor and ambiance is cinder block and cafeteria type table with odd and ends chairs. As we all know it not about the ambiance, its about the food. OK then, here we go. I ordered a pork plate as I always do at BBQ restaurants because it gives you a general idea of how the restaurant prepares its food. The plate came with stew, slaw, chopped pork and a couple of pieces of loaf a-bread. For all our friends from north of the Mason-Dixon, loaf a-bread is regular old white bread that you buy in a sliced loaf from the store. The slaw was decent, I am not sure, but suspect, it may be store bought and not made on premises. The stew, which was served in the largest divided area of my plastic divided lunch room plate was authentic southern Brunswick stew. It was thankfully not the vegetable soup concoction that some BBQ joints pass off as stew. This stew had the consistency of a very thin soup with tiny bits of corn and meat. You could almost drink the stew through a straw which is how it should be. It had a nice smokey flavor to it and was not too sweet. It was a tremendous portion on the plate. The pork however was what I would consider a smaller than usual portion. I did not weigh the portion, but I would be surprised if it was more than 4-5 ounces. Other than being a small amount, it was fair. It was already sauced with a vinegar / ketchup sauce. It had a small amount of heat added. The meat was fairly moist and was twangy in taste. The meat was chopped fine and had a decent texture when chewed. I would say that overall, this restaurant serves a mid range product that is worth trying when you are in this part of the country. I can't say it would win any awards but it is a good BBQ joint. Oh yeah, The prices are fair also. read more

Just a little place in the side of the road. Not your typical open hours. I stopped in on a Friday lunch time. The pork is shredded and probably cooked offsite. The coleslaw is fresh and good The stew is delicious and the staff is friendly. I've been offered extra bread and anything else I might need. Not a bad quick stop in the road. My nephew and nieces were visiting and everyone wanted bar-b-que. So they went to Holcomb's and ordered pork sandwiches for everyone. We were all disappointed. Overall- ok barbeque. Driven by many times but never tried it since they only open certain days. So today when we passed & they were open, we had to pull in to try. We ordered from a walk up window which was fine since we had our little one with us. We ordered to go pulled pork sandwich & hubby ordered sliced pork. The pork was tender although we didn't feel the smoke or rub were there. They were just ok. It was lightly sauced with an Eastern Carolinar vinegar barbeque sauce. I ordered extra sauce on the hot side and it was delicious. The stew needed a lot of work. It was very watery & lacking in flavor. Coleslaw was creamy and good. The tea sweet like it should be. It's a 2 star rating for the food, but I would bump it to 2.5 because of the hot vinegar sauce. However, a good barbeque joint shouldn't rely on any sauce. Maybe I should have tried the stew. We got four sandwiches. The meat came out of a big container and already had some vinegar sauce on it.
